This is just my opinion. Growing up with both at the peak of popularity, I would say The Offspring are the winners.

The Offspring provided a larger and more mature musicality to their songs (metal riffs, Hispanic drums, even Arabic sonorities) and they started with two guitarists. On the other hand Green Day is simple, efficient and goes straight to the point : 3 instruments and a tormented atmosphere. I vote for Green Day ! Anyways, all these guys are legends. What can I say…They are missed. 👑

With The Offspring, I can listen to their albums all the way through over and over. I find their style to be a little more dynamic and diverse than most punk bands. One of my favorite songs of all time is "Gone Away". Another great song is "Pay The Man". I can understand Green Day as a very cultural impact on the 90s generation. Their simple catchy songs had more appeal to young teenagers which also boosted popularity. And most of their albums didn't need an Explicit warning label.
I agree 💯… but Billie Joe is the real deal. I watched a performance of him in 1992 before he became famous and blew up and he has great stage presence and also proved he could write good songs and managed to stay relevant for so long. But… the Offspring while also a punk band, had much more depth in their sound and general cadence as a band. They are both some of my favorite 90’s bands (along with Sound Garden, Sublime, STP etc) especially in that genre with blink 182 but the Offspring’s music was much more refined. Learning to play guitar for about 6/months and finding two co workers that play bass and the other a kick a** drummer was to good to pass up… we jam playing this genre and it’s so fun. Also, writing a good song isn’t as easy when you’re behind the guitar so respect to all of those bands that made it look easy 🤘

Green day are great at making really catchy riffs out of very simple playing.
The Offspring are more technical, and make use of more techniques, chord shapes and single lines.
Both are different skill sets and both bands are great at what they do.
I'll always be The Offspring, though. I just prefer what they do.
Yeah, I always thought the offspring was like more metal influence with their guitar riffs especially on smash and ixnay. I like Green Day and Offspring but personally offspring is my favorite and more of an influence on me personally as a musician. Especially when it comes to the drums. I taught myself how to play drumming along to smash every day when id get home from elementary school.
Greenday relies heavily on the Bass for all their iconic beats. The offspring are more surf rock and guitar heavy

Billie joe is a good guitar player, he can shred well if he wants to but his songs don’t need a very difficult playing and just sound great.

Green Day makes up for their chord loss in some pretty interesting bass lines, as well as a fairly unique drummer. But offspring has better riffs hand down

Agreed, Ken! The Offspring also does have a heavy metal sound in a good number of their earlier albums such as "Smash" and "Ixnay On The Hombre." Green Day's songs are much lighter and simpler to play than The Offspring's songs.
Green Day's "Dookie" album will always remain as their top classic album. Just like The Offspring's "Smash" album will always remain as their top classic album.
The difference is that Green Day is a much better band, but here when comparing riffs from each bands most popular songs it seems Offspring’s riffs are better because Offspring’s best riffs are in their most popular songs, but I would argue Green Day’s best riffs are in their deeper cuts. The Grouch, Prosthetic Head, Walking Contradiction, Castaway, Waiting, Too Dumb To Die, and parts of Jesus of Suburbia are just a few great examples. Don’t get me wrong though I love The Offspring, but Green Day is just simply a greater band.

What I love about Green Day is that they are the only punk band that doesn't have exclusively teenage subject matter so you can enjoy their songs in your post teen decades of life just as much as you did as a teenager because their songs aren't about high school.

Green Day’s best riffs come from insomniac if you ask me. Every riff in geek stink breath is awesome. Jaded is simple but just so fast paced and catchy. Brat has just a really good melody. And a side note that’s not related, but mikes bass work is criminally underrated.
