In this video you will learn how to cook the perfect Thavala Adai or Thavala idly, also called as savoury pancake in English. It is an age old recipe from Thanjavur. A heavy yet tasty and delicious snack or dinner recipe prepared in TamilNadu.
I have shared the meaning behind this name (Thavala Adai) in this video. Its quite a rare information which you can never find anywhere else. Thavala adai's name meaining is shared on net for the very first time in this video. It is a long lost recipe loaded with lentils and rice.This is my grandma's favorite recipe, it can had without a side dish but cocunut chutney would be an awesome combo.
We are going to prepare a dosa/Adai batter with boiled rice and lentils and make three different adai out of it. First one is a small, thin and crispy Adai. Next, the traditional large thavala Adai with "flip over method". At last, the same large thavala Adai with simple tricks and tips.
Most importantly we have covered how to get a perfect crust (Thavala Adai yedu/Edu) on outermost portion of the thavala Adai and ways to achieve it.
Ingredients: (To serve 5)
To make Adai batter:
1) Boiled rice - 1 cup
2) Toor Dal - 1/4 cup
3) Channa Dal - 1/4 cup
4) Water - As required
5) Ginger - 1 inch
6) Green chilli - 3
7) Salt - As required
To Temper :
1) Oil - 3 tbsp
2) Mustard seeds - 1 to 2 tsp
3) Urad dal - 2 to 3 tsp
4) Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
5) Pepper - 1/2 tsp
6) Red chilli - 3 to 4
7) Curry leaves - Few
8) Grated cocunut - 1/2 to 1 cup
