      I don't agree. Melville didn't understand the genre yet, and Delon's presentation as conceived by Melville was laughably absurd.
      Later, Melville had a fine collaborator for his stories and they improved treendously.
      Other than problems with Delon's farcical "assassin", the rest of the movie demonstrated Melville's great movie-making talent.

      @randywhite3947 Probably because of the overdramatic death. It's a common thing in these old films. Like the first and second Godfather movies, they somehow just can't make the death scenes feel right despite it's an excellent film series overall.

      Completely unrelated but I had a similar experience, I'd pirated this movie and watched it on a dvd a few years ago. Right after finishing the movie I hop onto youtube, click on a random video, scroll down to the comment section and the top commenter's profile picture is Jef Costello. It was an "oh wow" kind of moment.

    One of greatest French movie ever made everything was perfect specially the acting is my alain delon favorite movie of all time the only of that generation of great actors that is still alive just turn 88 years happy birthday to a great French actor

    Nur wenige Filme haben so gut Delons Allein-Sein und sein Charisma eingefangen wie dieses Meisterwerk von Melville - Delon war der perfekte Darsteller für diese Rolle. Few films have captured Delon's aloneness and charisma as well as this Melville masterpiece - Delon was the perfect actor/man for the role.

    Love the way he grasps his chests when shot, especially with those white gloves. His revolver laid across, almost like a sword. Very theatric, in a good way.

    Este era el tipo de películas que mis padres tanto apreciaron cuando la que escribe apenas tenía un año de vida.Mas tarde pude hacerlo por mí misma.El cine europeo y sus actores legendarios como Alain Delon pusieron "en peligro"a Hollywood.El público mundial se inclinaba por el europeo.Grandes películas Grandes actores.Delon entre ellos.Por eso su paso por el cine americano fue efímero.Sus colegas yanquis se abrumaron con su llegada por allá.Delon como tantos otros no necesitó de Hollywood (por caso Brigitte Bardot,Cathey Deneuve,Jean Paul Belnondo,entre otros)para eternizarse en la pantalla grande.

    I saw this movie in a theater a couple weeks ago. Found this ending scene quite stunning. First, because it seemed he was about to kill the lady musician. Then when he is himself shot I was stunned by the fact that this samorai had no bullets in his gun. Why would he confront her with an unloaded gun?

    But why Jeff Costello went inside that club and threatened that girl with an empty gun and then said he was paid to kill her and then got shot dead by police so what was the meaning of that last scene of the film.

    cette dernière scène avec la pianiste...l échange des regards des 2 acteurs.... je trouve que c est une vraie scène d acteur... Pas besoin de parler tout est dans le regard surtout dans celui de la.pianiste... C est ici que Alain Delon est le.meilleur acteur !!!

      It’s Cathy Rosier. She had a hard story... her husband a rich CEO of the Pernod Brand (Havana, Ricard, 51, ...) died 2 weeks after their mariage. Then she did more or less nothing. Sad because she was amazing.

      It's him or the girl. He doesn't leave a job unfinished, yet he doesn't want to kill the girl. So he held an empty gun and let the gang kill him.

      اسم فیلم سامورایی‌ئه بر حسب عقیده بوشیدو سامورایی‌ها، در حرفه آدم‌کشی هیچ شاهدی نباید وجود داشته باشه و اگه شاهدی وجود داشت باید کشته بشه، شخصیت آلن دلون برای نجات دختر اول که شاهد بود و این دختر پیانیست که دوست پسرش آلن دلون رو استخدام کرده بود تا بکشتش ، مجبور شد که دو کار انجام بده یکی اینکه دستور سازمانش که میخواستن دختر اولی که شاهده‌رو بکشن اجرا نکرد و دختر پیانیست که دوست پسرش آلن دلون رو اجیر کرده بود بکشه، برای اینکه زندگی دوتا دختر براش‌ ارزشمند بود و نمیخواست با خودخواهی خودش باعث مرگ اونا بشه، از طرفیم به عقیده و باور خودش خیانت کرده بود چون کسی که استخدامش کرده بود رو کشته بود و از دستورات سازمانش سرپیچی کرد، و توی عقیده بوشیدو اگر مرتکب خطا میشی و قوانین رو میشکنی به هر علتی، برای نگه داشتن شرافتت مرتکب سکوپو یا کشتن خودت برای حفظ شرافتت میشی، آلن دلون هم برای حفظ شرافتش و زنده موندن دخترها با تفنگ خالی وارد بار شد تا پلیس بهش شلیک کنه و به نوعی خودکشی شرافتمندانه انجام بده

    *This final scene is completely absurd and inconceivable ... What is the meaning of raising an empty Colt PPositive in the middle of the Club against the singer .... Asking for suicide ??? if so how did he know that it will be delivered at the end where as there was no reason for him to die ??? I watched this movie over 10 times still couldn't find any sense unless deployed as a novel ending from Melville which this kind of cul de sac movies usually have* Good movie but ending doesnt make any sense ~ @ny ideas pls ??????????????????????????????????*

      Yes, the ending doe not make any sense. He can sacrifice himself but turning up with an empty revolver and pointing it to the pianist does not make much sense. Maybe turning up at the police station with the empty revolver and pointing it at the captain makes more sense.

      Although a better translation would be 'fantastique' meaning stunning, incredible, weird etc

      Well the entire movie made sense, so would have been better if the last sequence also made some. That last sequence is confusing for many people.

    probably the best scene for such an egregiously dull and overrated film, if only the entire film were like it's conclusion, this actually has some depth and mythos, everything else was so dry and boring.

      @@rivaxbcz9227 On est très loin de Citizen Kane, de la Grande Illusion, de Potemkine (celui d'Eisenstein pas celui de Ferrat), des 7 Samouraïs, de Rio Bravo etc. Ce n'est pas de la m****, mais c'en n'est pas loin.
