    I start choking up during the last 60 seconds of this. such amazing music. Gershwin kills me every time I hear him.

    Composer George Gershwin and Arranger Robert Russell Bennett...what a magical combination! No matter how many times I hear Porgy and Bess it never fails to thrill me to the bone! Most of the musicians look so young, but their phrasing and tone is fantastic! Wonderful entertainment! Thanks so much for posting this timeless work!

      He was a Russian immigrant's child, by the way. "Gershowitz" later became "Gershwin".

    Yup, that's a full-size bass drum, those things get HUGE! Ones that big are occasionally seen standing in for the artillery fire in the finale of the 1812 Overture.

    There is transition to about 4:40, where the song, "I'm On My Way (to a heavenly land)", that is sung by Porgy. Great song sung as well as orchestrated.

    The only thing that's changed is that there's no banjo on "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin".

    Obviously Porgy and Bess is a musical/opera but what is this orchestral arrangement called?

    @bigbandsrock1
    Gershwin's Catfish Row Suite is better because it features all the stuff Bennett's abbreviated version omits.

      It's the beginning of the official Overture to the Opera. Sorry to respond to you so late, and I hope you see this and that it answers your question.
