You can really tell these musicains really are enjoying themselves. They aren't just playing to be playing or going through the motions. Nice job by them and thanks for posting it!
Composer George Gershwin and Arranger Robert Russell Bennett...what a magical combination! No matter how many times I hear Porgy and Bess it never fails to thrill me to the bone! Most of the musicians look so young, but their phrasing and tone is fantastic! Wonderful entertainment! Thanks so much for posting this timeless work!
Yup, that's a full-size bass drum, those things get HUGE! Ones that big are occasionally seen standing in for the artillery fire in the finale of the 1812 Overture.
There is transition to about 4:40, where the song, "I'm On My Way (to a heavenly land)", that is sung by Porgy. Great song sung as well as orchestrated.
This is.. oh fuck my heartbeat god i pray to you in this comment while high (sorry bout that) but i beg you to start making people listen to this piece and this kind of stuff. i dont know why but i know it would make a better planet..
Bravissimi tutti...fiati superlativi!!!

I start choking up during the last 60 seconds of this. such amazing music. Gershwin kills me every time I hear him.

merci monsieur Maazel pour ce superbe concert porgy & bess de Georges Gershwin
absolutely awesome - the best performance I've ever heard!
Thank you, signore Lucchi. Italians understand that passion of Gershwin's music!
That maestro is...WOW!
I am so proud to be an American when I hear music like this.
He was a Russian immigrant's child, by the way. "Gershowitz" later became "Gershwin".
Music Mom that’s the beauty of being American. We all have come from somewhere else
@@musicmom2136Indeed !
May maestro L. Maazel rest in peace.

@billjhyt
Thanks! This is exactly what I wanted to know.
Siamo in rapido declino... nel 2002 Maazel, neanche dieci anni dopo l'Allevi... A voi ogni altro commento
You don't want to announce that! Someone might see.
The only thing that's changed is that there's no banjo on "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin".

Obviously Porgy and Bess is a musical/opera but what is this orchestral arrangement called?
@bigbandsrock1
Gershwin's Catfish Row Suite is better because it features all the stuff Bennett's abbreviated version omits.
@timbennett5121 Haha, wouldnt have recognized it :D
3:06 is that a huge drum?
Does anybody know which tune it is at 4:24?
It's the beginning of the official Overture to the Opera. Sorry to respond to you so late, and I hope you see this and that it answers your question.
2:33 Look how bored the percussionist is :)
