Խոր վիրապի վանքը , Խոր Վիրապ վանքի անվանումը բառացիորեն նշանակում է «խորը զնդան»: Ամենայն հայոց առաջին կաթողիկոս Սուրբ Գրիգոր Լուսավորիչը այստեղ 13 տարի բանտարկվեց քրիստոնեության քարոզչության համար` հայ հեթանոս թագավոր Տրդատ III- ի հրամանով: Երբ թագավորը հիվանդացավ, նրա քույրը երազում տեսավ մի հրեշտակ, ով ասաց, որ Տրդատը կփրկվի միայն Գրիգոր Լուսավորչի ազատագրումից հետո: Այսպիսով արքան ազատ արձակեց Գրիգոր Լուսավորչին, իսկ վերջինս բժշկեց թագավորին: Լուսավորիչը Խոր վիրապից դուրս գալուց հետո, ստանալով արքայի աջակցությունը, քրիստոնեությունը դարձնում է պետական կրոն։ Խոր Վիրապը կարևոր պատմական նշանակություն ունի Հայաստանի համար: Այսօր զբոսաշրջիկները հնարավորություն ունեն իջնել ստորգետնյա զնդան, որը գտնվում է Սուրբ Գրիգոր Լուսավորչի մատուռի ներսում: Վանքի տարածքից բացվում է Արարատ լեռան շքեղ տեսարան:
The name of Khor Virap monastery is translated as “deep dungeon”. The first Catholicos of All Armenians Saint Gregory the Illuminator, was imprisoned here for 13 years by the order of the Armenian pagan king Tiridates III for the preaching Christianity. When the king was stricken with a disease his sister saw a dream: an angel told her that Tiridates would be saved only after the liberation of Gregory the Illuminator. Thus the king released Gregory the Illuminator, and the latter healed the king. After the cure the king proclaimed Christianity as the state religion. Khor Virap has an important historical significance for Armenia. Today tourists have the opportunity to descend into the underground dungeon which is located inside St. Gregory the Illuminator chapel. The best view of the holy mountain Ararat opens from the territory of the monastery.

Khor Virap was initially built in the year 642 A.D. And then, about 1,000 years later in the year 1662, another larger church building was added to the complex, which still stands as the centrifuge of the site today. Located almost exactly on the Turkish border (just a few kilometers away) and within spitting distance from the base of Mount Ararat, it’s undeniably beautiful. But that’s not why it’s famous. Khor Virap is most notable as being the place where Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned for 14-ish years.
Gregory the Illuminator is the dude credited with converting Armenia from paganism to Christianity in 301 A.D. He would go on to be the patron saint and first head of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
