Brilliant. Just what newbie thru hikers like me need. Thank you Arielle. You are only the second person I’ve found who reviewed their gear post trail. I love my Injini’s too but have the same issue as you with the blown toes. I also am really pleased and relieved to hear someone else who is more focussed on comfort that ultralight as I have a frame pack & a 2P tent and agree that event when loaded my pack carries really well. PCT for me will be 2025 ❤
First of all great job on vlogging your journey through the PCT. I found myself looking forward to it each Sunday when it dropped. I'm from Northern Cal and being raised in the shadow of Mt. Shasta I enjoyed seeing all the country you went through. It brought back great memories for me. Second, great gear review it's nice to get your perspective on equipment that was really tested. By the way I totally agree with you on the Sawyer squeeze vs the mini and the Jet Boil stash. Have used both the Squeeze and the Stash and they are great for long trips.
GOOD JOB. This video is worth recommending to new hikers seeking ideas. I might even try out a few items you covered, like that shell you never wore haha It comes in a full zip version and also a hoodie version and is the same weight as my OLD Patagonia velocity shell from 2004 that I still use. * Very smart, I also bought some of those lip gloss tubes last year :o) * Just to be safe I use large turkey/goose *oven roasting bags* because they are odor proof and I double bag some things that are strong smelling like vanilla protein powder. I also line the bear canister with one. They are cheep and weigh almost nothing. A friend had a bear get his canister and kicked it into a river and ruined his food and the bag makes it waterproof. * The trick with the sawyer is to bang it with a stick or against a rock while you are back flushing it. I carry a coupler so I can back flush it on a garden hose faucet. It will pretty much last for ever but if it dries out you have to use the hose faucet to back flush it or get a new one if you don't want to deal with that. * haha, I love my little sit pad for sitting on rocks and logs for short breaks so I don't wear holes in the seat of my pants. I do have a torso length one as well and that reminds me that I need a new one.
Great video! So refreshing to hear your approach and see that being super UL isn't mandatory. Looking forward to your other videos and yes please include your skin care!🌻💛
Great video, thank you so much! I plan to hike PCT next year and you are first hiker i found that talk about skincare. I couldn't imagine being there for 6 months without taking care of my skin. Also love that you have had more underwear that just two :))) As a woman that is also something that i care about to feel comfortable.
Yeah I had the same issue with the full sized Sawyer. We attempted to filter one questionable stagnant source of water and it was rendered useless afterwards. Back flushed it vigorously but still it stayed slowed to a trickle. Since dehydration is the number one killer of hikers I don't take any chances and we upped our game to the Guardian. It's not really something you think about in the realm of luxury items but the ability to leave it out in the cold and the lightening fast speed of filtering definitely blends that area of necessity and luxury.
I just love the 1/8th" pad. Had mine for a couple years now. Great to lay out so I can crawl out of my tent. Keeps the blow up pad from sliding around as well.
Sounds like I sleep the same way you do, and I recently switched from a short Paria Recharge to an Exped (Ultra 3R) and loooooooooove it! It's 25" wide and the edges are a little thicker than the center so it helps keep you on the mat, instead of feeling like you're sleeping on a balloon.
Great gear recap showing what worked and what didn't. Sounds like you made prudent choices overall. Not sure if you had your watch ; if not , was that something you missed ? If you did , what features did you wish it had. After an epic through hike , did you go thru post trail depression ? How much were you micro-managing your caloric intake to ensure you stay healthy? What vitamin supplements did you bring ? How did stay on course - with a compass ? What were your top 5 fears on the PCT and how did you prepare or overcome them ?
Great video, thank you Arielle! I appreciate that you're nót an Ultralight girl. Shows that it can be done. 🎊 Congratulations on completing the PCT! 🎊 It's my dream hike.
Very interesting. What's particularly interesting is what didn't work out and why it didn't work out because followers can think about whether that applies to them or not.
I agree about the zero Sandals, changed mine out months ago. Great info! I use a lot of the gear you mentioned. Comfort is so important, especially when it comes to your sleeping system. I’ll carry an extra lb. For that.
Cnoc is an old Gaelic word for Hill or knoll. It almost invariably in Gaelic has an "R" sound when an N follows a consonant so it's pronounced Croc according to the Irish.
Great video and yes to a video on your skincare routine on trail! I know it’s small but can you link your ear plugs? Struggling to find a comfortable pair.
Here's the ones I used: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001J4HB1C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 And the skincare tips are live in my newest video
Excellent video. People learn so much from brave souls like you who break the trail. One thing out of all the gear you kept or sent home for me that would be a priority and an always keep is your 2 water bladder bags. One is none applies here as your bag split reflects and because water is so crucial. I come from the prepareness mentality and there could be just so many situations especially in that part of the country where you just may have to be more self sufficient meaning not relying on resuppy or towns always handy or even other people. Natural disasters especially big ones is what comes to mind. Since you can actually boil water to make it safe not having a back up filter is maybe understandable. But i would still have one. Having a back up lighter would be key on my list too. And one more thing a SWAT T and mainly because it can be used as a compression wrap as well as a tourniquet. The thing is so small and lite i have one in every med kit. I have seen people use these to self rescue where it would not have been possible really without it. So with the CNock for 1L at 2.8 ounces, the back up Bic at 1.6 ounces and the SWAT T at 4 ounces= 7.14 ounces and probably lighter then a phone holder or selfie stick which will not save your life. Neither will ____ whatever luxury item, face cream, amera gear in general or whatever.
yesss- such a good topic! Peep the newest video :) I took some time to answer this in my first q & A video. There are timestamps if you want to jump to your question specifically
Hi. Thank you for all of this information! Planning my PCT adventure next year! Two questions: when you buy a shower along the route, is soap/ shampoo part of it or were you just rinsing off? Also, were you mostly paying for stuff in town with debit card or were you also trying to carry cash? Thanks!
Great gear recap. I've enjoyed watching your hike this year and also your previous hikes. As someone who lives with food restrictions could you go over your trail menus? How was eating in town? And were you able to restock in towns or did you always ship yourself food?
I mostly sent myself boxes but I there were better options than I expected in most towns! Personally, I think GF is a bit harder than veg to find options everywhere but I definitely think I could have done more in-person resupplies than I did. I'll try to make some food videos in the future to chat more about what I ate and options out there. I feel like that would be super useful!!
@@ArielleShipe Thanks for the information, and I will definitely be looking forward to that video. As a GF person who also has multiple food allergies this would be my biggest concern on the trail. With proper food boxes I feel more comfortable knowing I wouldn't starve. lol
Hi! I noticed that in the 2020 gear packing video you planned to bring the nemo hornet 2p tent. Why did u switch to the mountain hardwear nimbus? Curious because i was thinking of buying the nemo hornet :)
I have a garmin fenix 5s which I love! If I’m tracking regular hikes it will last 5-7 days but if I’m tracking all day (like for thru hiking) it would only last a few days. Because I had access to mileage and stats on Farout (the navigation app we used for the trail) I decided not to bring any watch for my PCT hike. That being said, some of my friends bring newer model garmin watches and loved having them ☺️
I did the Rota Vicentina - Fisherman's thru hike in Portugal last winter... highly rec.. but I just brought little flip flops for my camp shoes. Hated it because I was wearing socks when at camp. Thoughts on wearing crocs? Did you see many with crocs when doing your thru hike?
Yes! Lots of crocs on trail but they are just so bulky that most people either ditched them or switched to the sandals that I had at some point. If you don't mind the bulk though then they are a great option- so comfy and light!!
A small thing, do you remember the brand name of your ear plugs? Thanks Tim, really enjoyed watching every week, miss it now that it’s over. Say hey to the tramily,
Nice review. Not sure what you mean by a base tan. Any tan means you have sun damage. Also it’s great to use moisturizers with spf, but you need to use enough product to get the spf coverage listed. Otherwise you will just have more sun damage.
Very curious … what was your typical pack weight range? Or…What percent of body weight do you use as a max for you packing guidelines? It seems like you are able to carry a great deal with you.
Next time take a small bouncy bubble gum machine ball .. chi.. i had 7 stitches have a paralysed toe and flat feet.. releasing chi is greater than most people know😅😐😯
