    I drive a 2018 Prius Prime from full charge until the battery runs out, then turn around and drive it back on gasoline to see what kind of efficiency numbers the car produces. I also do the same with my 2011 Chevrolet Volt to see how the two stack up!

    Well Done. Thank you for the comparison. Don't be too hard on your Volt. I am sure it has served you well. Looking to take possession of my Prime in Winnipeg early in 2019. The EV range and fuel number in cold weather should be interesting!

    In terms of efficiency, the Prius Prime is king - not even the efficiency queen Hyundai Ioniq can touch the Prius Prime. The 8.8 kWh battery is small by plug-in EV standards, but the 1.8L gas engine in the Prius is stupidly fuel efficient. This is in contrast to the Volt, even the Gen.2 which has a 1.5L DI engine onboard and a revised Voltec drivetrain which can do more EV mode driving but when running on fuel the efficiency while great compared to regular compact cars is nowhere near the Prius level good.
    You can see what Toyota and Chevrolet had different but conflicting goals in mind when designing the Prime & Volt. One targeted overall efficiency, the other targeted maximizing EV only operation. In that regard, if you look at "cost to run" as a linear graph, the Volt is better if you can generally stay within that EV operation window ahead of the Prime, but the Prius rapidly overtakes it in gas only operation on longer journeys when you can't stop and charge up.

      it's just not because of the 1.8L gas engine in the Prius , it's also the planetary gear system that is so awesome. The Hyundai Ioniq is a good car but has some flaws .. like using a HSG Belt ...yes a freaking belt.

    Great video. I’m in Saskatchewan and have 2 Teslas. It’s tough, I’m seriously considering the Prime, but we are supposed to have working Superchargers soon so we’ll see.

    great video, we need more EVs! Sick of burning gas :/ My wife and I are almost to the point of no return (still have gas van and diesel motorhome)

    Great video, good info. How do the cars feel when running on gas mode. I noticed you saying the prime motor was jolting when it first changed

      With the Volt the car drives basically the same when the gas generator is on, but the Prius Prime actually gets much more lively. This really comes down to the Volt having a much larger electric motor compared to the Prime and how they all work together.

    Minute 13:05 you sound indignant but was really funny LOL, by the way i drove a 2012 Volt for 3 years until my lease expired and unfortunately a that time the generation 2 wasn't unveiled, what a nice car to driving i still missing, but now my current lease is expiring and i am between the Audi A3 e tron, the gen 2 Volt or the Prius Prime (all of them 2017)

    When you're driving at around 60 mph (50-60mph) it's best to be on gas mode. That's the sweet spot for maximum efficiency for gas mode.

    Prime has way more space for driver n passenger compare to volt. I am 6’3 and I way comfortable as I test drove volt too. I didn’t like the older version Prius. But all gen 4 can give 26 miles of EV range which brings my mpg 95mpg and I drive 125 miles per day all highway cruising 75-80mph.

    It is worth mentioning that the Volt has a fossil fuel generator that is not subject to as stringent of air pollution requirements. So if the goal is cleaner air the Prius Prime charged by solar panels like mine is hands down the winner.

      John Puccetti that's not entirely correct. Both of these cars have fossil fuel generators and can plug in to charge. The newer Volt gets more than twice the all battery distance though, so many people may dip into burning gas on the Prime and not the Volt. Like my 2011 Volt is also charged by solar, and even it gets further EV range than the prime.

      Generators are not subject to the same air pollution requirements that a gas engine in a car is subject to. A gasoline leaf blower pollutes far more than a Prius. RV generators is the same thing little or no pollution controls.

      John Puccetti also, the term generator is incorrect. It's actually a full vehicle motor that will couple with the wheels in some circumstances. People freaked out shortly after it was released as they were under the impression the motor only made electricity. In the second generation Volt when the battery runs out the gas motor couples even more :)

      Dell Green thanks for the question/comment! I have a Honda Clarity lined up on June 15th to borrow for the full day, so I'll be doing the same route I took the Prius Prime on!

    I lied here is info says the Volt is slightly cleaner.To get terms clear: “tailpipe” emissions are self-explanatory, that’s a measure of CO2 from vehicle exhaust, and “upstream” emissions have to do with getting the energy to the vehicle. Since the Volt is a plug-in hybrid with 53 miles EV range, its 51 grams/mile tailpipe emissions are paltry as the engine is not running much of the time. However, its electricity, when coming from powerplant-fed grid energy - which varies by region - must be factored to arrive at a carbon footprint. Nationally, it’s estimated at 151 grams/mile with most of this being from electricity generation, and a tiny bit from the emissions generated to supply for the Volt’s gasoline. The EPA also figures 171 grams tailpipe emissions per mile for the Prius Liftback, and 34 grams/mile “upstream” emission figure for the gasoline used by the hybrid, based on nationally averaged numbers.
    That said, going just by the simple online tool the government provides, the Volt averages 200 grams/mile and the Prius averages 205 grams/mile in total tailpipe plus upstream emissions

    Why don't you compare a 2018 Volt to the 2018 Prius Prime? Your comparison is not fair.

      6EQUJ5 sorry but I'm just a dude who happens to own a 2011 Volt. At the end of the video I talk about how it compared to the 2017 Volt for which I did the same test last year
