  • This video shows how to build and use the 2 pieces needed to hold water bottles on backpack shoulder straps.
I have been asked this question a number of times and I have always had to point to a video from the fall of 2014, half-way in the middle of it. I finally got around to making it a separate video. I hope the makes it easier to find.
    Thanks for watching,
    Rob

Rob, another great video! I have to agree with Dane, those two hanging bottles are your signature look. Now we all know exactly how you do it. Thanks for the sharing how you do it.

Thanks Rob, I've been carrying water on my shoulder straps on and off, but thanks to this vid I'll try smaller bottles AND will be more mindful about my water intake!

Great, informative video, Rob! Those two water bottles attached to your shoulder straps are part of your trademark look. Looks like a great idea.

Clever idea but for years I have simply sewed on two water bottle holders onto the front of my hipbelt and just slid my water bottles into the holders! I can carry up to 32 oz bottles this way! No annoying swaying or swinging of the bottles, and no struggling to reach up and back to the pack water bottle pockets to get my water. But the best reason I prefer to carry them is that I now have all that water weight off of my back and directly onto my hips!! Works great for me...

Thanks for this. Being a runner, I've used small running packs where the water bottles sit on the front. I never understood why backpacks don't have this. I figured someone must have a simple way of doing it. I'm tired of taking my pack off or reaching back really far with sore muscles to reach my water bottle. I definitely don't drink as much as I should because of that issue. I'll have to try this out or something similar.

I share your confusion. Some of the Six Moon Designs are the only ones that like anything like a standard trail running vest.

Simple yet very effective. I might employ a small carabiner for the hook cause i have a few spare.

Very nice. I've set up the same way. I find it much easier to use that way and you can see when you are running low on water....Take care, Bluefin.

Your two bottles look to be able ~40 oz total, and based on your intake. Does that mean you're refilling and filtering 3 times a day or do you carry a larger bottle in your pack to refill the bottles when empty? Otherwise, it would seem that you hike where there is plenty of water to be able to do so many filterings and fillings.

Carry 2 empty and rolled up (with cap!) bottles - no weight. When you have extra water, fill them up and strap carry. Can always flatten back out and put back in ruck when not needed.

+John Lord Good idea. I alway have an empty platty bag with me for instances when I need to carry water, but I like your idea as well.

+BackpackingAdventures Plastic bottles always good. Two 12 ounce bottles, and a1 big 2L soda water bottle. Filled with water ... or air. Flotation bottle might save your life, or used as your trot line float. Can always chop up the bottles and make spiral plastic line out of the bottle. If you pre-filter the water, then put bottle into a solar oven/mylar sheet, and UV radiate-neutralize the bugs (like steripen protocols), and you have sterilized water (African SODIS protocols, fill up nasty water in bottle, throw up on galvanized roof sheeting in daytime sun, heat and UV (and back UV) radiation kills bugs. Have clean or unclean water - but safe to use for cooking, drinking, washing, laundry, .... Same water bottles (unclean or clean water) and put near campfire before bed, and you have some good hot water bottles in a cold sleeping bag. Keep changing through night near the fire, for continued heat. Same bottles pushed into boots keeps bugs out. Hot water bottle in morning, pushed into cold boot/sole makes for comfortable wearing at the start. Filled water bottle on rope, use as a throw-weight for bear hang ropings (or pulley). Can use as a fire kit for storing dry tinder, tinder dust, cordage, bird's nests, firestarters, fatwood, matchsticks, dry ferro rod, .... Many many uses.

I just stole your homework and made two holders with Lash-it. My first attempt was a failure because I started with the mitten-hook end splice first. Wrong choice. In order to make the locked brummels on both ends, you need to do the mitten-hook end last so you can pass the first eye through the hole for the second. Make sense?

Rob, this video exceeded my technical limits -- is it "flippin & floppin" or "floppin & flippin" ?!? Haha
Good stuff as always my friend! One thing I always do is peel the label off my bottles. Easier to see the water level, but mostly because I can't stand the crinkly sound it makes under the shock loop when I'm moving. Guess that means you're lazy and I'm anal. ;-) -Klaussinator

+Klaussinator Klauss, great to hear from you man! You expect me to walk fast enough to cause my label to make noise?!?! You have to be kidding me! I hope all has been well for you and your family. Best wishes - Rob (and everyone knows there is no flop if there is no flip)
