As a Black Brit who was born in a British Overseas Territory that most Brits don't even know about, I appreciate you talking about how proud Brits are of their history despite it being a racist and colonial one. I do like things about being British but the UK seems to only recently be realising that racism is a huge issue (the Sainsbury's Christmas ad, the BLM tribute during the New Year's fireworks, Meghan Markle...and that's just ONE race.) Thank you for acknowledging it; I'm glad you've had the chance to meet many people to help you come to that realisation 🙏🏾

I'm from Australia and moved to Hong Kong in 2012 and it has been an absolutely amazing experience for the most part. I completely fell in love with the place and the people. I was lucky to move here for my girlfriend and now wife so I've been fortunate enough to have a family here Hong Kong which allowed me to experience a much more local life than regular expats. Sadly, Hong Kong has declined an insurmountable amount in the past 7 years which has been very saddening. My wife and I will be moving to Australia this year to start a better and free life. We're both very excited to move to Australia which is by no means perfect but can offer us a much better life than Hong Kong ever could. Hong Kong will always be in my heart and as long as I'm allowed I'll always come back to this beautiful place.
P.S We've both been to Taiwan many times and absolutely love the place and your videos too Alan! Keep it up! Always support Taiwan! 🇹🇼

Generally speaking, people in Taiwan are more family oriented, bounded, warm and caring. To a degree I appreciate and enjoy that every time I go back. But on the other hand, they worry too much how others think of them. And carry way too much “weight “on their shoulders.
Live in Vancouver Canada since 1995 definitely gave me a new perspective in life. I’ve learned to never take things for granted and be always stay true to myself.
Allan, I got how you’re feeling at the moment. You’ve done an excellent job so far. Please not be too hard on yourself. Just keep on believing and the best is yet to come.👍👍👍

Obviously America also has the big problem of being too patriotic, dare I say nationalistic and living abroad has really helped us to open our minds and think about things from different perspectives.

Allan, I will try to make my point of view clearly to you, hope you can understand.
First of all, I think we Taiwanese are 100% with you, we love you unconditionally because you are such a sincere young man, here Taiwan is your second home country, but your mother country always is the most respectable nation in the world!
Allan,God bless you.

Born and raised in Taiwan and have been working/living in London for the last 10 years - it certainly makes me appreciate time with family much more. Living in London has also helped broaden my horizon and just the ways I view things, some of which cannot be achieved had I not left Taiwan, it is after all a pretty single-ethnicity small island.
But having said that, I've also become acutely aware of the shortcomings of life in the UK as well - I guess in the end of the day there's no such thing as 'the perfect place' but how you feel about the place you're stayin in.

I am really touched by your genuineness. After leaving Taiwan, I lived in two countries, Japan and USA, Each for more than 10 years. I learned that Asian counties like to emphasize how 歷史悠久 their country is. No new human race came out in the last five thousand years, so it’s ridiculous and funny to think having a long history is something to be proud of. And they don’t know western civilization has been ahead of eastern most of the time in history, with exception of probably 3 or 400 years of Tang Dynasty. And especially Chinese people brainwashed by CCP’s propaganda of nationalism, think China had been the most civilized country until end of Qing dynasty. If you compare the relics left by China to other civilizations, you can see Agamemnon of Troy had much more advanced weapons than those tera cota warriors of Qin empire which appeared five hundreds later!

Many foreigners in tw filming videos talking about how they look tw society from their perspective (also v important n v much appreciate that) but merely like u talking about ur NEW perspective to ur home country as a foreigner in another country. Astronauts took lots of pics of earth tho their mission was the moon, cos they wanna know how the outer world look at their hometown, I only started understanding this after I studied in the uk.
Tho a small point I disagree was ur first point. I think Taiwanese people r the ones that giving ourselves too much pressure, n ngl, learning how to b more chill is something I wanna learn more in the uk.

I really enjoy every time I watch your video, Allen. I personally feel Taiwanese education should teach students to think in the way you guide the audience to think, and this brainstorming training part is missing in the education system.
I am now working in Australia and want to apply for citizen here, but I feel more connected with my hometown Taiwan particularly from the Covid-19 started. I used to feel aggressive and stress when I was a kid in Taiwan, thinking why we needed to be told by the elder that we need be nice to people, patient, and all kinds of saint stuff that "mission impossible characteristic" as our gold. And it did work for me, even in the 10 hours away from home while working with people all around the world. Elders always said Taiwanese work like an ox- hardworking and quiet in the farm, and people do exactly the same way in Taiwan- I am very proud of it.
After living a few years in Australia, I realized many things in Taiwan are actually unorganized like the chaotic traffic and the random parking. However, surprisingly, if something big happens like an earthquake or this pandemic, people will automatically stand together and follow the rules. I guess this is some kind of weird but great in the same time.
I wish your families in UK and South Africa stay well and government can organize better for people so you guys will meet soon. I think we all learned something only after they aren't beside us right? Wish you having many masterpieces TW pineapple, cause here in OZ not bad but you know...not good as Taiwan.

7:45 HK has already transformed out of manufacturing small goods since the 90's, partly due to scarce resources, partly because the labour market has moved out of industrial fields.

Interesting view! I am a Taiwanese currently living in Australia. I always think Taiwanese take life way too seriously, like what you think about British people as well. The spectators see the chess game better than the players! It's kind of like all the things like this effect! Maybe the feeling that local people take life way too seriously is the evidence that you fully immerse in that country! Anyone who lives in a foreign country escapes all original mother country's hierarchy, so that's the feeling you become open-minded, that's not the things where you are from or where you live. You inspire me - only local people know how to tire of their country! Like Taiwanese tire of the chaos between blue and green, and British tire of the things between the Conservative and the Labour!

Fundamentally Taiwan is towards working together to create competitiveness in the world but as for the UK most important is to remember the great achievements in the past and continues that tradition. nevertheless, Education is one thing that the UK should proud of, and as for Taiwan, the education system still has a lot to improve.

I agree with your points on how your perspective changes when you've experienced living away from your home country. I've now lived in 7 different countries and before I was 18 I had already lived in 6 countries. As an American it made me way more aware of how much each country impacts each other and the ways they are becoming more connected.

I think in the business world, everything revolves around costs. It's just too expensive to manufacture certain things in certain countries, Taiwan included, that's why many first-world countries need to outsource abroad. It may not be because they "don't want to" make it in the UK, it's just too expensive!

Study the Brompton cycles, made in London (and another factory I think in England). They refused to export their manufacturing to Asia and have a wall of "rejection letters" from UK banks that insist they optimize cost. Now days they are cult cycle and I my wife and I explore on the weekends with ours.

Definitely agree on the UK's general ego... Probably the reason why the vote to leave the EU just tipped over the edge to a marginal leave win. I definitely feel it has gotten worse in the last 5 years, before then I thought we were getting better and becoming more humble, but, that thought has since been shattered.

I am living at the moment with my husband in SA,where I guess your son is living now with his mom. But my very first trip to EU is the UK in 1989! ( alone in UK I have been there 6 times ,especially China Town in London more than 100 times!) Since then I had been to more than 30 countries in the world for business and pleasure, before I moved to Germany after I married to my Mr Right in 2004. Although I got a chance to visit my family in Taiwan almost once a year before Covid-19 hit the whole world, I have been missing the way of living in a "free" country where I could travel free even at night. By the way, Taichung is where I was born, and thank you for sharing all the amazing and interesting stories with us. When are you coming to SA? I might be home in Taichung for Mother‘s Day this year. Hope to chat with you about UK and SA. Take care.

@@lifeintaiwan Hi,Allan. Great to hear from you so soon. As far as I knew,Turkish Airlines is open for TW passport holders who want to fly via IST to TPE. A friend of mine just flew back to TPE last week. But she had to stopover in IST for 22 hours!!!! Therefore I am waiting Emirates that will open again to fly in and out between JNB and TPE. after end of March. As to the rules in SA,I guess you just need to show a PCR test for COVD-19 before u leave TW.That can cost you at least NT6000.Plus,Once you return to TW,you will be sent to a free charge HOTEL room for 15 nights that is totally controled by TW government because SA,UK...are still considering as a RED zone ...haha.
But last Oct. when I flew back to Germany, things are easier there. But in Germany, since last Nov. till now people are not allowed to eat in at a restaurant. Well,Hope my information will help you somehow.
      Wendy in JNB

My favorite was when I was taking a ferry from Dover to France with my car and there was an older couple sitting on the ferry, watching France coast come to view. The older woman turned to her husband and with a gentle, calm voice said, "It doesn't look that much different from the UK."
The man just grunted and they didn't say anything else.

I am a Taiwanese born British and these are my views.
    1. Too many 'little Britain/England' view, lacking broad-minded mentality.
    2. Too many people taking advantages on social benefits.
    3. Lacking long trem planning for the country.
    3. Infrastructures are very much behind other countries.
    4. Too much of 'me' culture, Brexit is a good example. Or in another word, the danger of far right wing
    5. Pubic transports are way too expensive that many of the Brits cannae afford.
    6. Higher educaiton in England is an absolute rip-off
    7. Lacking key industries to be 'unique' in the international trading market.
Of course, there are many things which are good here, for example, the best town planning int the world and in general, people are pretty polite.
