I like your use of the term "travel bike". This is far more meaningful than 'adventure bike' if we are honest with ourselves. The big 'adventure' bikes are the two-wheeled equivalent of luxury SUVs pimped up with snorkels and sand tracks. Especially in tarmac Britain.

    • @davidmatthews3093
      @davidmatthews3093 2 месяца назад +3

I like the term real world bike. So many people who own bikes for travel make a big deal about their bikes ability in that final 2% off-road situation that most of them are never going to attempt on their big, expensive, powerful machines. I feel that Nathan sometimes makes too much about the off-road ability of his fleet, that might be fine for north Devon but is rarely necessary for those who plan on touring Europe. Those people seeking adventure heading for the more difficult sections of the TET or even certain parts of the Portuguese ACT simply can’t afford the luxury of compromise, they have to go for a lightweight bike with a good ground clearance and the correct tyres. Most of us don’t do that. I have the luxury of having bikes that suit the two extremes, a comfortable Euro tourer which is comfortable, economical and capable both on road and on the sort of gravel tracks and trails that I would consider taking any heavily laden bike on. The other one is off-road focussed but can do road miles if needed. The only compromise I have ever found. I just spent the weekend with friends and our next meet up is in December in the mountains. I was asked which bike I will be taking and my answer was it will depend on the weather forecast. If snow is forecast it will be the light weight bike with knobbly tyres. It will be a pain on the easy road sections but there are times that only it will do. Fighting a middleweight bike with no grip is something that I would rather do without. It’s also worth pointing out that 47 BHP and a 500cc engine is more than enough for a lot of touring. As Nathan has shown that configuration allows you to enjoy the great rides riding fast enough and up to the legal limit.

@@timbiggs I wouldn’t call it that😜 - it’s still one of the best multipurpose adventure bikes in the world, no matter what anybody says. Yes it carries a bit more weight than ideal but everything else including the magnificent motor will keep it appealing for years to come.

You're absolutely right,@@davidmatthews3093I do use my 501 on some sections of the TET, and parts of the Spanish and Portuguese TET have me clenching hard. Portugal ACT is doable on a bigger bike, likewise Pyrenees ACT, which this Rieju would be perfect for. I did both ACTs on a 701 with an adv fairing and it was great on that. I could have wished for a smoother bike than my 2016 701 but I never wanted anything heavier. I'd have been happy enough on my Tiger 900 Rally on Anakee Wilds, but the lighter dual sport was perfect.

The roads in southern Spain are dry and salt free and a delight in winter. Spanish riders are very lucky. They are out in numbers every weekend throughout the winter. The Tabernas desert (where Fort Bravo is) is the only true desert in mainland Europe. October/November and April/May are great months down south as in the summer it can be too hot. Also there is not the risk of snow on the return to the north of Spain for ferries as there might be between Dec and March. I liked your video and commentary. A2 bikes are so much easier on the tight bends. A lot of my codger friends are down-sizing as we get older and your videos about your “fleet” are very useful, Nathan👍

Considering this as a replacement for my R1150R here on Fuerteventura. There's only so much you can ride on the island and as there are more unmade roads than tarmac here this is the best option. I'll see if I can join the groups of off roaders I've come across in the past but I won't hold out much hope as the last group I did a ride-out with on the BMW just went from cafe to cafe at a slow pace. I was however a hero for several minutes when I explained how I used to ride in the snow and ice back in the UK. Voge is the other option but that seems too much of a a road bike and the RIeju is better equipped for the billion rocks we have here. BTW, you should have gone over and said hello at the end.

The bike Honda should’ve built. If the NX500 had everything the Reiju has except the rear fuel tank, priced at £7k, they’d sell bucket loads. Do you need the extra power of the TransAlp?, on real roads, not really unless you’re two up. Or even more power and capability of the Africa Twin?, possibly, if you’re doing lots of motorways as part of a RTW trip; damn heavy to pick up though. The 500-650cc size just strikes the perfect balance of everything you would really need.

I can't help but think this is the "Perfect" motorcycle for a "Motorcycle Travel/Tour Business". ......Economic to buy. The bikes are Well equipped, they have a L o n g range between fuel stops and A2 so open to a huge number of riders. The BMW GS bikes often used by the big tour companies, are really just too heavy physically and work out too costly for normal people with real world budgets to spend. This little 500, is the same experience at half the cost. They look well built and as a tour business you'd be servicing them yourselves. What's not to like? They would most likely be a popular hire as the marque is a bit exotic... to British eyes at least. Oh and the depreciation wouldn't matter as they'd be worn out long before "the bean counters," worked out that they had only modest resale values. I like them. 👍👍.

seems like the bike is pretty happy in the twisties, looks a great bit of kit for touring, don't need all the power of the monster tourers, and certainly on a road like that a lot of power is likely to get someone into trouble anyway, besides it is more fun to get a slower bike to travel quickly than riding a quick bike at half it's capabilities anyway which are usually way beyond the average rider anyway

Is the rear tank plastic or steel? I would be concerned with a less full tank creating condensation. How does modern injection cope with water droplets? Nice road.

I think £5500s too low for what it is when you see it in the flesh and ride it but agree £7k is too steep. If it competed with voge 525 at £6k I reckon it'd hit the spot. Although CF Moto is hard to beat at £5700.

The centre stand has a massive foot bar to help you get it on the stand. That is what is touching down. It's not on the right of the bike.

No it's the foot of the stand not the lever. But will double check

The rear filler cap and surrounding plastics look like they are borrowed from the old F800 BMW.

    Better travel bike than CB500X?

For me yes. It has the 500x engine but twice the range, bigger wheel size, longer travel suspension etc. honda has better proven reliability and parts supply

REE-EH-HOO is the Spanish pronunciation, REE-EH-JEW the Catalan way. I found that out from this Spanish bloke:

Long range travel bike and no fuel anxiety; lots to like.
I appreciate your reviews and impartiality based on frequent experience of riding a large stable of bikes.
Enjoy the remainder of your trip.

'Ree-a-who' more or less. Similar to the Spanish pronunciation.
