  • TEAM TALK: AFFORDABLE PERFORMANCE FOR 30K? (REALLY???)
Affordable performance for 30K, does it exist? Can those two words be put in the same sentence? Well we've scoured the internet and tried to gather up all of the 17 foot fiberglass boats and well, it was a short search. Basscat, Charger and Nitro are the only ones left in the 17ft market. Who's gonna be #1 and who are these rigs made for? Let us know in the comments below.

I had a 17' 1979 Charger, bought it when I was 23 to get on the Mississippi. It was a great boat in 92' but I just grabbed a tin Alumacraft Bay 20 with a Yamaha 150 SHO, threw a Bob's hyd jack and some electronics, going to be splitting time up north and in the flats in florida. I have 50k in it and if I hit a log or an oyster bed so be it. Love the channel, spent a lot of nights in Lacrosse as a younger man, Good Times

I agree to a certain extent but I also tournament fish out of a 17 foot boat. My boat has never kept me from cashing a check. If your a good fisherman boat really doesn't matter as long as it's reliable. Now with that being said there are great advantages to a bigger boat that we all know. But when it's a shallow water bite I can get my boat where others can't just one point.

Unless your a 50-60 yr old with deteriorating back issues. Gonna stay in big glass for the bettor ride; tournament fishing or not.
There is a reason you get behind those massive grand marquis’s, caddies going 5-10 mph’s under the speed limit. Their all older people. More likely than not they have their military service ball caps in the back window, vet plates, or a handicap place card.
Thank you for your service you have all the rights to go slow as you like.
Bunch of these men in our bass club who anyone can join. However, We have a tournament series that’s for 50+ boater only. Ox can be any 16+. Lots of vets. Love this group. Seen and lived it all; stories are endless.

Man, you sure know how to beat off a dead horse.
We get it. You're too good for a 17 foot boat. Especially if it's a Nitro.
    Cool.👌
But for the people that they are intended for, they are decent option.
And almost every high school fishing team in the country will agree with me on that.
These boats get people on the water, in a new boat, with a warranty, for alot less money than a pro series boat costs. And if not for this class of boat, these people might not be able to do what they love, so I for one, am glad that they exist.

17ft glass is going away for the same reasons more top trim trucks are available than base ones. Profit! I’m willing and to bet margins are way higher on the 19+ boats with big Mercs just like Platinum F150s and High Country Silverados over XL’s and SL’s. And all the features are an easy sell to most guys as they gotta outshine the next guy!

I will never get rid of my 16 foot Jon boat. I got my 60 hp jet motor I fish to California Delta only and there’s places that only kayaks go that I’m fishing and I can literally fish all day for about $30 in fuel especially with today’s gas prices and it cost me almost nothing different to pull it behind my truck almost the same gas mileage and that really adds up nowadays so who cares if I’m getting blown by it’s only on my way back to the dock because they’re not fishing where I can fish!

I love my 16' procraft 165 with a 90 horse opti. I've knocked gel off the hull, hit rocks, powered over beaverdams. I fished the big bass tour on sml 4 years in a row out of it and going back this october. I've had it in saltwater, run my trolling motor into boulders in the UP. I just love it because I can beat the crap out of it with minimal worries. It's totally fine in 3-4 footers. I can run it all weekend on 10-15 gallons of fuel. I can't remember the last time I put ethanol free in it though I overdose it with star every fill up. I know it's limitations and I want a bigger boat eventually to fish the opens. That said, I want to keep this boat till it breaks in half. It has provided me years of worry free fishing.

You should have come looking in South Africa. Still quite a few 17ft bass boats built here and we are not scared to hang up to a 225HP on them ;-). From the top of my head. Ruffnek Maverick S, Brilliant Boats Terminator, Crackleback 500 and 530, Rebel 531 and 532 and probably a few I have missed. 17ft boats were the stable in bass fishing in South Africa until quite recently where the shift is now to 19ft although lots of 16 footers still around. Even my 16 ft has a 200 Carb Yamaha and gets 60mph at least (and then i get scared...) Speed (yes), Money (not so much), No brakes (you bet yah!!!)

Glass boats under 18ft don’t exist for the fresh water market. Plenty of small salt water glass boats. My buddy had a Ranger 330, 16ft 10”. We fished the Hudson River that’s a big nasty. Very Sea worthy boat. I’ve been in plenty big water and the 20 ft boats aren’t any better in the kind of waves that you can’t see over the next one. The price of boats is out of control and I’ve ran a 18ft 150hp for the last 40 years and never felt I didn’t win a tournament because my boat was to slow/small. I have won several that I wouldn’t have in a 20ft. I team fish with a friend with the full 80K rig. We took my 18ft old boat to an event to access an area we couldn’t get in with his boat and won a boat so there’s that.

reason i prefer aluminum...rendlake in southern illinois is about 10 minutes from where
i live ....the north end is nothing but stumps and old fence rows ....the flathead fisherman love to leave their gutter nails in the top of stumps where they fastened there rubber bungee cords for there flathead lines .....on a fiberglass boat , when you run up on top them stumps and have to gas it hard to get off.....it leaves some major ice pick looking gouges on your hull from the front to the back ..!!!!!....

I comment often about my 2000 171 Champion for good reason.... I fish and cruise lake Ontario and the finger lakes of NY 99 percent of the time and that boat fishes no different than the biggin boats. It takes rough water sometimes better because it rides across the tops of the waves, costs wayyyyy less for fuel and upkeep, trailers easier and I can drop it in the Erie canal or smaller lakes because it doesn't even need a launch to get it wet. I rigged out my boat with all the goodies and I'm not even at 15k
I get why everyone wants big and fast but for us smart folk we prefer to be smart over fast 🤪

The 17 foot glass boat is definitely dying especially when you can go buy 17’ 8 Express 115-150hp Yamaha and those are super heavy duty that actually do good and rougher water fully decked out for 26 grand. How can a glass Boat compete with that

I run a tin rig, not an Express. I really don't think you can buy one fully rigged for that amount. Their website shows cheapest boat with 115 goes for 29K. And then you start adding the goodies. Love to have one of them though.

Funny with 17 foot boat is there is no ride if you want speed. Can remember a 17 foot hydro sport back in the day with a 150 evinrude. It would blow the doors right off of you. I was running a 19 foot skeeter and it would walk it all day but once it came to some rough water and talking little it couldn't handle it and the larger boats would walk all over it. The crazy part is that's how we had to fish tournaments to make any money. Now if you don't look cool you suck at fishing tournament even tho they spent 80k plus. Andy you should do a video on how to get an affordable used boat that you can get into and show up the 80k boats when it comes to tournaments and it should be less then 15k. Like aways kick ass catch bass and burn gas.

When I can just grab a tin boat for waay cheaper and have less maintenance on it. I fish brackish water exclusively and some salt. I cannot for the life of me understand why these boat mfg's have priced their chit so high the product is no better than 3 years ago. I am looking at buying a boat that 3 yeats ago sold for 26k and now the same exact boat sells for 47k and up???? I might just wait for the boat market to crash and pick one up super cheap, it will crash......

Not sure but I think the Margay is being killed for a new boat called a Bobcat. I just checked one at local dealer. 17 foot, single trailer, 150 Merc, 80 ultrex, 2 8 inch birds. Price quoted was , wait for it? $49.999.00! Payments as low as 388 per month for 180 months with 10 percent down. I love Bass Cats boats. But I can't afford that! Maybe with less equipment and smaller motor it could approach 30K ish. Locally for me, it would be hard to find a tin rig with 115 or 150 for 30 K! Boats have gone entirely berserk! And no, I don't see the 17 ft glass market coming back with these prices. Andy, any idea how many boats say, Ranger or Bass Cat make and sell in a year?
