      The worst part of Tokio Ghoul was Season 3+ where it did in a extreme speed up and follow the Manga. But even if they made it properly the Story itself (that came from the Manga) was trash. 90% of ppl dying coming back as Ghouls is so beyond bad :,D Not following the Manga was the right way, and deciding to go back to Manga at Season 3 was the beginning of the end. Season 1 and 2 were beautiful and close to art, everything after that belonged in the trash.

    The difference between edge and dark is direction. Adding darkness without impact is only the edge of things. So your characters and world should not only feel the impact of these events, but do so in ways that fit their specific situation. The darkness is the tone, empathy is the hue, and sympathy is the contrast. If you're a writer struggling to break from edgy cliches, hope this helps.

    • @ihatefridays2715
      @ihatefridays2715 Год назад +51

      Personally, I think "edgy" is too vague to be criticism.
      And while some works considered "edgy" lack direction as you say, others don't have that problem and are still considered "edgy" nonetheless. For example, works that are mean-spirited and are made to rip on something else are considered "edgy" as well.
      Like Gigguk said, it's more of a feeling, not a genuine criticism.

    • @JLRB__
      @JLRB__ Год назад +26

      So I have a question for you. What shows do you think are edgy with your definition? I have seen multiple people say shows like: Re-Zero, Devil man Crybaby, Akame ga kill, Tokyo Ghoul, Deadman Wonderland etc... are edgy shows. But in that same thread that was asking for: "What are the edgiest shows you've seen?" No one/or very little ppl ever mentions shows like: Berserk, Attack on Titan, Cyberpunk Edge Runners etc... All have dark tones to them.
      Just to expound and potentially start a discourse - Ultimately, I think part of the problem here is that people have different definitions of the word "edgy". Some think it's a good thing while others think it's a bad thing. Those who think it is a good/ok thing are quite honestly mistaken. They are defining edgy as: " dark & cool/mysterious" That's not what edgy is. Dark, cool & mysterious is dark cool & mysterious; We have words for those already.
      Edgy is something or someone, being or trying to be, intense/dark and or errant/deviant, for the sake of being so, cause its cool.
      1. Characters can be edgy, but that's not synonymous with bad/edgy writing since that can be WHO the character is - people like that exist.
      2. Writing can be edgy. Per the definition of edgy, this is basically when the writing is dark but is just plain and simple, badly written/executed to the point where the meaning, impact and experience are lost/overshadowed by merely the darkness itself. So, for all intents and purposes, it becomes writing/a story that is dark, intense etc... to be just that - cause its cool. Which should not be the case since the dark writing/stuff should be there to SUPPORT and CREATE, meaning impact and experience.
      [ Also, last side note (For Gigguk & others): Just bc something looks edgy, doesn't mean it is. Looks alone is not what makes edgy. This can be said for multiple other things. Ex.) Just bc it looks bad doesn't mean it is, looks don't determine what is of actual, meaningful quality. ]

    • @krayzoman
      @krayzoman Год назад +5

      I think the Edge line has more to do with emotional investment, which is admittedly tied to direction, but still more subjective. This is why Edge is associated with immaturity; younger audiences get invested more easily, and older audiences are more jaded to stories in general as well as their younger selves.

    • @checker297
      @checker297 Год назад +19

      imo edgy is just another term for "teen angst" used by people being lazy when critiquing a work. I think its more a problem of people failing to critique work for actual failings. Its very similar to political statements meant to dehumanise the opposition so you can just point out failings because they hold the opposite view to you, rather than having meaningful discourse.

    • @SuperSupper2
      @SuperSupper2 Год назад +3

      @@JLRB__ you need a tl;dr on that essay, but I'll answer the question at the top.
      I'm honestly not too in the weeds on anime, so I don't have a lot of examples to pull from, but shows like SAO and whatever the one is with the guy who makes a gun and gets way too cozy with a vampire or whatever that looks like a *child*, those shows are almost all edge and no substance. Bad things happen to the main character and a harem happens because the author was horny and the MC is the only character with any fleshing. It's that kind of egotistical worldview of "I'm so tragic and no one understands me" that rejects even the notion of other characters being more than set-dressing.
      Re: Zero definitely has some edge to it, but there sometimes needs to be leeway in that judgement when looking at the story being told. MC again ends up with a gaggle of gals following after him, but there is depth to other characters that not only disagree with MC but also outright oppose and fight against him. These other characters gain depth from empathizing with seeing a person going through trauma and also having different tolerances for their how far they extend personal sympathies as they interact. This is the substance that's needed behind the edge to really cut deep, because if all you have is edge then you'll only ever be skin-deep.
      Edit: the "leeway" I'm giving RZ is due to the broad scope of the story. If you were to either add more characters or better flesh out the ones in play, you'd end up with something similar to the run-length of the original Fullmetal Alchemist anime. That's not all bad, Hughes had more of an impact for the exposure we had with him, but it dilutes what should be the core of the story which is of two brothers trying to reconcile their shared grief.

There's more but that's not the point.
      Arima's death was a flag and the beginning of an end, not the end itself. There're some cons at the end for the most part howerver, it could be better if ishida stopped for a while and handled it properly. Tokyo Ghoul was one of the gracious things he and we had, as it developed his art and fame, and for us, it was thought-provoking interesting and phenomenal. it is hard to see a mangaka puts his soul in the work like Ishida, the fact Tokyo Ghoul was done in 8 years never fails to amaze me regardless the art and quality. i'm just re-reading the manga once again.
    *man* they did Ishida Sui dirty. It's so rare for a manga of this scale and quality to come out. And I realised it was one of his first major publications, in which case it is incredibly impressive that a single person, on their first time writing a full length work, was able to conjure a story with this level of world building and depth.
    The first season wasn't even bad, but the complete fumbling of s2 sealed the deal. The story diverged too much to ever meet again. I didn't even bother watching RE.
    Tokyo ghoul is probably among the top 10 manga of the last 20 years, easily on par with Attack on Titan or Demon Slayer. It would have reached the same level of success if they'd done it properly. Most people talk to, who've only seen the anime, find it very weird when I compare tokyo ghoul to attack on titan. True, the anime don't even compare. One is a good adaptation, one was a mess.

      I think that's the anime curse of trying to fit 300+ chapters of details into 48 episodes. The anime swerved around all the emotion and impact of the story in favor of the fighting (even though tokyo ghoul isn't a battle series). The whole point is the mystery, thriller, character development and emotional impact of the story, which can't be captured well when condensing that content into 48 episodes. Hell season 1 was a good adaptation but that still didn't even touch on what made TG great. Like how Kaneki volunteered to go with Jason to aogiri and enduring torture. Mostly skimmed over to condense the story

      For many years, it was unanimously believed that the mess that is Tokyo Ghoul √A was solely Studio Pierrot's fault. And there were a few reasons why people believed it.
      Studio Pierrot has a mixed reputation for having produced anime such as Naruto, Boruto, Bleach, Kingdom, and Black Clover. These anime would often be criticised for several reasons such as sub-par animation and visual quality, excessive filler episodes, pacing issues and more. Because of the general media perception that animation studios matter the most when judging anime, it's easy to see why Pierrot is constantly discussed when talking about the Tokyo Ghoul anime.
      Also, after Tokyo Ghoul √A finished airing, Sui Ishida's drafts of √A were released online and circulated rapidly among the anime community. To everyone's dismay, the drafts were very, very different that what was shown in the anime. Scenes like Kaneki proclaiming that he will kill the One-Eyed King, Touka seeing Rize in Anteiku's basement, and Tatara forcing Kaneki to eat Taguchi did not make it to the anime.
      Here are the links to the drafts I managed to find:
      sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129424575942/thank-you-so-much-for-you-post-about-the-anime
      sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129418629852/ishidas-root-a-storyboard-drafts-are-so-fun-to
      sunset-tower.tumblr.com/post/129451544167/how-does-tatara-make-kaneki-to-eat-her-corpse-and
      This led to the anime-manga community creating the narrative that Pierrot ignored Ishida's drafts of √A when making the anime. One anituber even made a rant video about the drafts, which I think accelerated the narrative even more.
      However, this cannot be further from the truth as there was an interview with Shuhei Morita (Director of Tokyo Ghoul S1 and S2) in 2018, around the same time as the Tokyo Ghoul :re anime was airing.
      Link to interview: www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/88fddm/im_shuhei_morita_the_director_of_anime_series/
      Before I talk about the interview, I needed to clarify a few things about the nature of √A. When √A was announced after Season 1 aired, it was advertised as a season based on Ishida's original story concept that deviates from the manga. The drafts are proof of this because they showed scenes that were not in the manga.
      www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2014-10-11/tokyo-ghoul-2nd-anime-season-video-teases-new-story-by-creator/.79825
      The reason why I am saying this is that a major criticism about √A is it not following the manga, whereas it was Ishida himself who wanted √A to deviate from the manga. However, the anime-manga community largely blamed this decision on Pierrot because of the animation studio stigma. So if you are unhappy with the fact that √A deviated from the manga, then blame it on Ishida, not Pierrot, even if you respect him.
      Back to the interview. Basically, Morita stated that the reason why the anime was different from the drafts is that the producers interfered with the original vision. To understand what he means, we need to talk about the production committee. The majority of the anime-manga community believes that the animation studio is generally responsible for how a work is adapted. This is not the case most of the time, as it's the production committee (manga publishers, merch, TV companies etc.) that decides that.
      In the case of Tokyo Ghoul √A, here are the main producers:
      - Marvelous
      - TC Entertainment
      - Pierrot
      Now you are probably thinking: "Pierrot is on the production committee so they should have some responsibility in how the √A story was handled". However, that is not the case. Pierrot is ranked at the bottom of the list so they really have little say in the decision-making; they simply do what other producers ordered them to do.
      Back to the topic, Morita wanted to follow Ishida's drafts, but the producers' interference prevented Ishida and Morita's vision of √A come to fruition. This could be because the producers find Ishida's original story to be risker than the manga story in that it may not make a lot of money. The result was a mixture of anime-original and manga-canon scenes that didn't really make much sense.
      My intent with this comment is not to change your opinion on Tokyo Ghoul √A, but rather to bring light to a topic that is severely twisted by the anime-manga community for a very long time. Thank you for reading.

      I truly believe that this piano arrangement made a substantial contribution to Tokyo Ghoul's popularity and to the reputation of the ani-piano community. Not only is this the most popular anime piano arrangement of all time (currently sitting at 88M views) but Animenz described it his most difficult so far. The variety of advanced piano techniques, combined with its high faithfulness to the original song was what gave it such a notoriety. It has also become Animenz's signature song that he would play it in every of his live concerts. I would even say that the piano arrangement pushed the limits of what a piano arrangement could be.

I fell in love with the story. I became obsessed with it actually despite it being grotesque and horrifying i could only describe it as beautiful. I rewatched the anime with my roommate and found myself being so angry at just how awful the adaptation was and that was only season one. when I saw season 2 episode 1 I literally lost it and said I cant do this anymore and stopped watching. Tokyo ghoul remains one of my all time favorite manga and I've even started collecting the series. I pray for a reboot bc this series definitely deserves so much better.

It's not quite the same tone as Tokyo Ghoul, but it carries Ishida's ability to convey the emotional state of characters through art and has fun characters and worldbuilding. Also, unlike :re, Ishida's actually giving himself more space between chapters, and seems to not be burning himself out as much.

It's unreal how a manga could be fucked up so poorly by a studio. I'm rereading it now and I can't believe how epic this part is in the manga

    my main issue with the anime adaptation is that the narration is really confusing. it might happen that some things get lost in translation however there is a difference between adapting a story on a more superficial level than making so many logical loopholes then you have no clue what the hell is happening and why. it is also really messy that some characters do carry the show and we know information about them (such as Suzuya or Akira or Touka just to name a few) and the rest has like one function in the story and that's it. while the manga has a very complex web of characters and an incredibly complex world and setting and you have the time and possibility to understand everything. also this amazing work of art is so layered and filled with cultural references, poetry, and really smart intertextuality.
