My favourite Mac icons are the ones in 10.6 Snow Leopard. They're not flat-looking, like in later Mac OS releases. Thank you very much for reviewing Shuriken and posting this video, Michael; much appreciated!
Another excellent video MJD. Just curious, perhaps you've covered this before, but with your collection of retro-computers and software (I've looked over the video library for your two main RUclips channels), can you tell us what your full collection of retro computers are? I know ow at least for me it would help in making requests for what other retro-computers you might cover. Thanks.
10.4 was the best. I remember playing RailroadTycoon on the classic emulator. When 10.5 came up I really missed the feature to play os9 games. Great OS.
This is really cool! I have a Late 2006 iMac 17" that will be a perfect candidate for this OS mod pack. Looking forward to installing it and playing around with it and giving my iMac a new look!
Are there any current OS community projects aimed toward the early Intel Macs? I have a 2008 MacBook 4,1 laying around and Snow Leopard was the best it could run because with Lion it started to feel more sluggish.
@@ccricers Windows on an SSD is probably the best way to still use these machines. Support is milked dry on these community projects with the lack of people still willing to make functional, compatible software
Is that iMac modded or is this running on original hardware? I'm impressed that everything seems to be running so smooth, gives me hope that this might play nice with my iBook Clamshell... I really like the early OS X theme and the Platinum icon set too! EDIT: Re-watched the video and answered my own question, derp, lol. Installed it on my iBook too and it works really well! Now if only I could figure out how to enable Classic mode, lol... :P
I wonder if Linux people have this kind of nostalgia. Like…could someone do a video of Ubuntu 10.04 and be like…this is Gnome 2. Here’s pidgin. Was pretty neat to be able to message all my friends from one app. And it was so easy to open right from the Gnome Menu
Yes, Ubuntu 10.04 had the best theme of The Ubuntu series. I've used all 3 major operating systems (Windows, Mac OS, and Linux) and can state that Windows looked best with Vista/7, Mac OS looked best with Snow Leopard, and Ubuntu looked best with 10.04. Ubuntu 10.10 didn't look that bad though, the current theme and logo are hideous, same can be said for modern Windows and Mac OS.
I am doing the Shuriken install right now. Having used Sorbet Leopard on my G4 machines i must say this install process is MUCH slower. For Sorbet Leopard you just have to restore the image to your partition, boot, and voila, it runs, fully updated, then you tweak it a bit, done. On Shuriken, you just get a 700MB big file, in it you have a folder with subfolders, in the first some links to updates, which you have to download most of them by yourself, IF you have a working internet connection already. So you download them manually and install them one by one ( Java alone 7x) with a restart inbetween EACH of them. That took at least 2 hour. After that you tweak it with some scripts, you have to decide which are best for your system, one by one, reboot inbetween. It would recommend doing all this completely and after that create an own, new img to restore from( like Sorbet) in future.
So which one is better outside the obvious hardware limitations, if you are running say a g4 1ghz would you use the tiger or leopard version, or is linux still better then both of them? What os gives you the most usable machine on today’s internet?
It has Max, too! That does it. I'll reinstall 10.4 on my G3 iMac and give it a try. If it's good enough, I might even remove Debian from the system. Thanks. 🙂👍
Tiger was the last version of Mac OS X that would run the classic version of Mac OS (version 9.2, I believe). Does Shriken allow Mac OS Classic? Thanks for the is great presentation.
I like your channel because there is so much you show i never had a clue about exist so many different Linux uppdated mac os etc and i dont understund where you find them all..L.O.L....any way thanks for showing so much so much i learn from you etc..Thanks...
I got one of these macs it came from a school and they left there disc image on with a cool mac os 9 splash screen and a cool background of the school as well.
Question: As a starting point, does it need to be tiger? I'm wanting to do this to my g4 ibook, but its running panther. I've maxed the ram and done an SSD swap (256gb). Can I install shuriken on panther?
Haven’t checked in years but I’m assuming the software update app is no longer able to phone home. Having those updates all in one place is definitely handy
@@DistrosProjects I remember as a kid being pretty impressed that OS 9 software update was still working around the time Tiger was out. Can’t imagine that one is still active today.

my favourite was mac os x mavericks beca\use it had skeuomorphic design but it wasnt TOO skeumorphic like mac os x 10.7
well the best setup would be Mac OS 8 user interface under 10.2 kernel for my g3 mac

Man, the dock and some of the icons used to be so slick and beautiful 😢

nowadays I play that stuff on CrossOver or ShadowPC :)

Another great video. I'm now confident I'll be able to optimize an old Mac if I ever get to mess around with Tiger or Leopard
This looks really interesting, I've always been interested in Sorbet but my G3 iMac can't touch it, so this is a nice alternative

The word ‘’shuriken’’ immediately brought back the memory of Naruto❤
The latest itunes version that will work on g3 macs with tiger is 9.1.1, which i always install ;) nice video man! Have to try this on my pismo
So cool! I used to have a ‘07 MacBook if I still had it I would try this!
Used this on my Powerbook G4 15" (Aluminium) and things feel a bit more snappier than before, also helps that spotlight got disabled
Awesome project
Excited to try on my old 1 Gb 667 GHz TiBook that has a partition with Tiger.

Odd how MANY people were all over the Sorbet Leopard thing (it's great!) but I've hardly seen sqaut on Shuriken. Guess it's time to play around!
OS X Shuriken makes OS X Tiger look like MacOS Sierra.
Hey Michael, it's been a while since you've heard from me. Just thought i would say, hope all is well and always good to see legacy A0pple videos.
Una parte di questo pacchetto funziona anche su Snow Leopard. In ogni caso provato su G4 MDD ed è fantastico. Grazie per questo altro update z970 !

10.4 Tiger seems awesome.
Have a Powermac 800DP on which I was thinking about doing a Linux install but now I think I'll go with this.

Is it possible to go reverse and make a modern version of MacOS look like Tiger? I’ve done it with I think Mavericks but that OS is already useless.

Cool 10.4 mod
I hope we get something like this for Mac OS 9.2.2
Does Shuriken have iSub support? Sorbet Leopard does not, even after using the patch from Macgarden. Patch worked on 10.4.8
i love mjd!

You can do all this yourself with Photoshop since all the visual elements in OS X are just stored PDFs and PNGs.
I recently got my imac g3 out of storage and holy crap is that hard drive slow. such a shame it can't be easily swapped out for an SSD
Blue scsi is a pretty good option

9:06 i love suck, i wish they would put it in system prefs, been enabling it with onyx for years
So it’s like sorbet leopard but it has classic Mac OS games support?
Hey. Anything to keep these beautiful old computers running just a little bit longer.
This works on first gen Apple TV? I want to change the OS because I don’t have a remote controller to the Apple TV.
Mac OS X Sierra is not working on the 1999 iMac
after installing this can you actually browse the net? does it update safari to show web pages?
Those scripts are almost as easy to use as Linode!
how cool is that!
can you please do a video about chomikbox 🙏
I know this mod is free but I feel a huge urge to yell "shut up and take my money" at this whole deal 😍!
Can we install these custom OSes on an 2015 MacBook for instance?

i think i should try the 10.5 thing on my Emac

That already exists. The modern web is yours for the taking, if you have the processing power and the RAM.
