Helpful! Please do another video on changes to this system and or what its been like for you teaching in Hawaii.
Excellent summary! 🎉
Great tips! I just watched your video about how to move to Hawaii in 2021 and out of all the people I follow on this topic, your tips and recommendations are the most helpful! Very useful and practical 😁
Thanks! Appreciate it 🤙
Thank you for this! We are considering a move there and trying decide when I should apply for the 2024-2025 or a year after. Getting the ball rolling. I'm coming from TX!
Thank you for the information.
You’re welcome! :)
I found this video very informative! Great job!
Glad you liked it! 🤙
Great tips and love your shirt😍
Nikki definitely picked it out!
Great video and thank you so much for the tips!! This was exactly what I needed. I’m looking to move this year to Oahu and I work in the district as a therapist.
I’m applying now and would love if you could do a video on the differences between the leeward/windward/etc districts of Oahu.
Either way.... thanks for sharing! 🤗
Thanks for watching! Funny enough, we are already planning a video like that, so be on the look out! Thanks for your comment and suggestion :)
I’m a sophomore in college getting a bachelors in music education with a minor in jazz and I was hesitant to try and work in Hawaii but this video gave me a lot of confidence and hope. My family is from Hawaii and it’s my dream to go back home and teach. Thank you so much for this video!
I am glad the video helped in some kind of way! You will make it back to Hawaii, when that time comes, know that you can always ask me any questions you have. Mahalo!
Thank you for posting this! I really enjoyed the video! I’ll be moving here in a few months with my boyfriend who is in the Air Force so this was extremely helpful as an elementary school teacher .. would love to hear more!
Congratulations on the new orders! I hope you will like Hawaii as much as we do! Feel free to ask me any questions you have and let me know what would be interesting about this topic for another video!
Same here!
I have one more question! I am interviewing now with schools and was curious about the process after being hired!? background checks, additional tests/requirements, medical tests.. Just want to be prepared :)
Thank you so much and hope you had a great holiday!
@@heatherharrison4200 There wasn't anything extreme about the process after being hired. Just the usual paperwork. I did have to get a TB test/clearance and the background check was very quick. It came back within the week. Good luck with your interviews!
I will be moving there as well due to military. I will have a ca teaching license for multi subject but not experience other than my semester of student teaching. Cali tests are different then most states
Please make an updated video on this same subject 🙏
Great info. I teach science and STEM in Virginia. Just got my Hawaii Advanced license in Earth & Space, Physics, and STEM. I'm trying to time my entry into the applicant pool. Would April be too soon? Would I be setting myself up for being "too picky"? We will be in the Hilo area.
I think the earlier the better. I got most of my interview requests during June, but I've heard science and math can get them much earlier. I got plenty of interview offers around the Hilo area and I teach social studies. You should have no problem picking up offers for science and STEM. We wish you luck!
Thank you so much for the info! This was very helpful. One question I have is I currently work in Montana as a certified administrator and have a teaching/administrator certification. How do you get/transfer your certificate in Hawaii? Thanks again!
I am not too familiar with administrator certification. The best option is to contact the Hawaii Teachers Standards Board and speak with a licensing expert. I found it easiest to simply contact them by phone. I hope this helps! hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org/content/contact-us-2/
Great video. Do you know of any summer school teaching positions and are there any districts that you would like to recommend?
Thanks for watching! I haven't heard much about summer school openings yet, but I suspect they get offered to the most seasoned teachers first. Regarding school districts, Hawaii is a little different as they only have one district that covers all the islands. I hope this helps!
I am glad to come across your video. I am a teacher (of ~23 years), as well as a fellow stutterer. Years of speech therapy as a child...and now, as an adult, it rarely becomes obvious, but does show itself here-and-there. I am planning on moving to Hawaii (Maui or Oahu) in 2-3 years. I also have a history credential, and also a multiple subject credential. I will hopefully have my English credential by the time I make the move. I will rent for a bit, but hopefully I will have plenty of equity in my house to purchase a place outright (so maybe I can afford the low wage and high cost of living), and hopefully I will be able to find a good job. :-) In a future video I would be interested in learning about your teaching experiences in Hawaii (positive and negative).
Hi James, always happy to meet a fellow stutterer (especially one who has become a history teacher like myself)! If you purchase a house on Maui or Oahu, that will drastically reduce the cost of living here. I think the housing cost is what mostly drives other teachers away from the islands, so that should reduce a lot of financial stress. I will definitely make a video about my experience of teaching here on Oahu. It will most likely come at the end of the school year when I have a bit more experience with the system. Mahalo for the comment!
Hi did you have to take any state exams there? I know in in Texas I had to take a few exams to become a teacher. Do I have to retake specific exams in HI? I have my education degree as well as my ESL certification.
What about if I'm a graduate teacher in Philippines but no experience?
Moving to Maui to be with my daughter. I’m a 60 yr old ESL instructor thinking of applying to teach there. I would appreciate any advice you can offer. Mahalo
That’s exciting! If you have any specific questions that might come up, you can always reach out to us. Good luck with your move to Maui 🤙
The problem is that homes are so expensive and we have pets. I don't think a condo would allow multiple pets so we have to get a house.I majored in Linguistics and Japanese and have a TESOL certificate. I'm njot what they refer to as a certified teacher though. Trying to figure it all out. Thanks@@DennyandNikki
Is there A high demand for school psychologists?
What about school counseling jobs. What are those public positions called? If they are few do you recommend accepting a teaching position first. Thank you for the information.
I am not too familiar with school counseling positions, but they are most likely available in rural areas. That is a separate application on the DOE site.
I'm in Illinois, long story short I have a degree but all that's ever gotten me was food industry jobs. I like Hawaii because I like to surf. I hope with the teacher shortage there will be free housing. Thanks for the video!
I agree! Free housing would be amazing and make life a lot easier!
Hi Denny & Nikki, are you still teaching in Hawaii? Safe to say everything in the video still applies?
Hello! What if I’m getting my teacher license? It works a bit different in Illinois. I also have a bachelors in Spanish and French. Are world languages in need? I have also being thinking of getting my ELL endorsement 😊 please let me know!
Aloha! Are you completing a teacher preparation program? And will you have the certification before you arrive? If you have your license before you plan to move, it will make it easier. Hawaii DOE does offer French and Spanish in many secondary schools, so that might be a great way to get a job. There are fewer French/Spanish classer compared to the mainland. The islands offer Asian languages (Korean, Japanese, Mandarin). ELL is a great way to get to get a job here because it's very high need.
It was easier to get a job at IBM to be frank.
I imagine with private schools they like to see a non-padded but not necessarily traditional teacher path resume. Am I right?
Me for example, I’m a Harvard graduate, I do have teaching experience both in public schools in Japan and colleges in Boston, and I’m fluent in Japanese (my wife is native Japanese by the way, but I’ve spoken the language since I was a teenager). I have family in Hawaii, and a couple of decades of international corporate experience.
If I take a teaching job, of course I plan to seek training and education in teaching, but not before. And of course I expect those courses to be free or nearly free-like tuition but not books and other requirements. Otherwise, frankly, why would I bother applying.
So is it worth it for me to apply, or is it an automatic rejection?
You worked at IBM with a Harvard degree? Why in the hell would you want to be a teacher.
Im planing to study to be a teacher in the state of Florida , and im thinking to do me practice in one of the island , can i do me practice in one of the island ?
Absolutely, Florida accepts teacher preparation programs from other states. Check out their site to get more information. www.fldoe.org/teaching/certification/
SHOW UP !!!! SUPER SHORT ON QULIFIED TEACHERS IF YOU CAN AFFORD TO LIVE HERE
I wanted to ask you. What are the list of Praxis test you took to get Provisional license other than Praxis 2 Content Knowledge for Gen.Education. Can you help me? Thank you.
All of my testing was done in Florida and transferred to Hawaii. Florida has it's own system, so I never took the praxis exams. Check with the standards board for the test you need: hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org/content/permits-and-license-types/
@@DennyandNikki Mahalo for your response.
I'm from California with a preliminary credential in SPED mild/mod disabilities has anyone tried to clear there credential in Hawaii? Mahalo
Hello, I would like to know if there is any chance to hire an elementary school teacher from abroad.
Aloha Leyla! I think it's possible with similar educational requirements and permission to work in the US. Calling the teacher recruitment office is your best bet!
Do you need to have a green card to apply? Can you work as an expat in Hawaii?
You have to be authorized to work in the US and I don't think the DOE will sponsor anyone. To be sure, it's best to contact the Teacher Recruitment office.
Is it possible to live off of a teacher salary alone?
Definitely with budgeting and a little sacrifice in living space. I would look at renting a room or grabbing an apartment in a more rural area.
What has your experience been IN teaching in Hawaii?
Overall, my experience was both rewarding and challenging! Challenging because I work at a Hawaiian focus charter school, so lots of new things to learn. Rewarding because it enriched my understanding of Hawaii. The students were engaged and coworkers supportive. My experience was quite different than the information I found online before arriving in Hawaii. Hope this helps!
Just apply. Almost every school is short-staffed.
Great vid but remove the intermission music
Glad you liked the video! I'll try to pick better music for the next one.
Hate to sound like a Debbie Downer, but with student loans and the high cost of living in Hawaii, even with the top salaries and bonuses, it seems close to unlivable for a family of four. You may be living at the poverty level for the rest of your life. Am I exaggerating or does this summation seem accurate?
I do think that depends. On what island you live, do you have two incomes (from significant other) and just your personal situation/needs. Generally though, yes, just one income on Oahu with a family of four? You’re accurate
