Before there was Sergio Leone’s “A Fistful Of Dollars” (1964), there was Akira Kurosawa’s “Yojimbo” (1961).
While the Leone-work was more suitable for the european-market, it was no mystery on what it was based on, so Kurosawa would earn his share on Leone’s success.
In the end “Yojimbo”, starring the unmistakable Toshirō Mifune, is what one would expect, know and love about Kurosawa: The shots, the details - the overall filmmaking speaks its own language and will stick with you.
The director would have a fruitful relationship with composer Fumio Hayasaka, until his death in 1955. From there on the composer’s former student Masaru Satō would take over for some projects. His style is rather contemporary and even contains Jazz-influences, which we can hear even in (the historical) “Yojimbo”. Enjoy!

I don't know the composer, but he's good and funny.
Searches: Violent, ironic, formally splendid. The action sequences would later be plundered by Western cinema, which owes more to Kurosawa than it is willing to admit. Scripted by the director together with Ryuzo Kikushima, the plot subsequently inspired several Western directors, above all Sergio Leone ("A Fistful Of Dollars") complete with a lawsuit.
PS: The show went very well.
Although the unstable climate affects my health and my worries, the contact with the public (even during the general rehearsals) is an "injection of confidence".
Among the spectators was my little nephew.
Each of us received the poster of the show as recognition from the association as a certificate of participation from the protagonists, to be framed.
Even the dance scenes went well, so much so that we did an encore with everyone at the end!
I received compliments from many people, who they said gave an expressive, funny and empathetic performance!
I did two improvisations with gestures.
One of the all time greatest film. Yojimbo is worthy of watching numerous times just to experience how Kurosawa uses the camera (The Hidden Fortress is another example). I have the Criterion boxed set of all of Kurosawa's early films and I plan on binging this summer. Not musical commentary, just an excited Jidai-geki fan geeking out to some wonderful music. Hello, Fred! From Noh ( 12th Century) and Kabuki ( early 17th Century ) theater shows to the post _ War period, Japanese music went through a process of " westernization " until it reached cinema. This can be seen since Kurosawa 's first films, set to music by Seiichi Suzuki. Interestingly, its fourth composer, Masaru Sato, is the one who will use the greatest number of influences and, at the same time, rescue old instruments such as Taiko & Otsuzumi ( from Noh ) and Shamisen & Odaiko ( from Kabuki) __ Sato also said inspired by Mancini. Because " Yojimbo ", there was a legal dispute between Kurosawa and Sergio Leone ( the latter with his " Per Un Pugno Di Dollari " ), and not over the story, but also over certain elements of Sato's music/ Japanese music: the Shamisen ( the most important instrument in the Kabuki ) is a precursor to the Banjo ( 18th Century). Other instruments that became a " trademark " of Italian western music, such as Mukkuri, Sanshin,Hyoshigi, Kokyu and Mokkugy, are part of Sato's unusual orchestrations __ oh, yes: for the " Mancini touch ", Hichiriki ( precursor of Sax )!
