I came across this amazing piece of film on an online archief, which is pretty hard to find, especially for foreigners because all is in Dutch.
This film is captured by Dutchman Henny Hogenbijl who travelled with his family to the USA in the summer of 1955. They travelled from New York City to Los Angeles.
The USA was really something different back then (in the late 40s, 50s and 60s), the American dream was real. I think most people in Western Europe really looked up to the way of live in the USA. We hadn't things like a supermarket, color television etc, America was years ahead. Sadly things have changed for decades now.
I don't think many people have seen this before so I just had to share this unique roadtrip.

@Angelo Iafelice You're right, fixed it.
What everyone dreamed of America looking like.
The golden age of everything.
Every thing looks so modern and surreal. Far cry from what America is today ....
That shot of the train is amazing
Steam power through the San Joaquin Valley! At 21:25 the train is just starting up Caliente Canyon to Tehachapi. The cars had it a lot easier on SR 58.
17:19 my grandpa worked at Hotel Utah back in 1955 when he was around 20 years old.
Crazy to think he might've passed right by this Dutch family in 1955. And now we can all see it on RUclips in 2020.

Excellent trip, looks like everything went ok. Loved every minute of the video. 50s we’re the BEST.
Rare footage of the once great American Empire
3:59 - Long gone Jones Beach State Park tollbooths 35 cents ($3.75 today) on the Meadowbrook Parkway prior to the Loop Parkway on Long Island, New York. Love the topless orange...I knew them as dark olive green. Then a quick visit to some garden apartments in suburban Nassau County or Queens...
As Lithuanian I'm very thankful to America, because many Lithuanians flew to USA because of aggression of third Reich and soviet union in Lithuania. I know that Lithuanians got really good reputation living and working amongst American citizens. :))
This film was made shortly after the release date of both the movie`s Blackboard Jungle AND Strategic Air Command on March 25, 1955. The car used is a 1955 Buick Series 40 Special. We can also see the "redecorating season" of the Mitchell Corn Palace in 1955, starting in May. At 20:40 we see Southern Pacific Railroad steam locomotive #4450 of the famous "Golden State" class GS-4. The family arrived in Los Angeles shortly after the release of the movie The Sea Chase on June 4, 1955.
And Buick is a GM mark while the film shows the Ford operation prominently
Thank you for a wonderful video
Great times before all this craziness
That was fantastic. Thanks for posting this.
What a wonderful trip at an incredibly interesting epoch when there was still a sense of the American Dream and the sense of hope and prosperity that permeated the times. I would really have loved to do that trip then. This footage is a real gem. Thanks for uploading this.
Awesome
absolutely beautiful
Enjoyed watching the video so much! It was so enjoyable watching it. What a memorable trip for those who took it I am sure. Thanks for uploading it.
When America was cleaner and civilized...........
Apparently it's racist now to have a clean society. Thank goodness we have feces-riddled cities like San Francisco to show us the way.
@@stevenstuart4194 24:39 Good clean Southern California Smog
Yes all that segregation, so civilized! 🙄
@HiPoint1095Carbine even still most neighborhoods are heavily segregated most white people live with white people and most black people live with black and hispanic with hispanic etc etc that’s just human nature
@@chuckie102883 is that the best you could do. Laughable at "best".
Kind of amazing how bad things have gotten over the last 70 years.
This an incredible film! Thanks for sharing!!!!! kl
America Dreaming
Truly a golden Time.
A lot of people are talking about good things were back then or how racism was prevalent, but the music on this video is excellent.
Went to the Buffalo Bill Coty museum last year. If anyone ever gets the chance, it's amazing. One could spend several hours in there. It was incredible.
Good stuff.
21:03 The Rancho Bakersfield Inn! For many years it was the place to stay on 99. Right close to the iconic "Sun Fun Stay Play" welcoming you to Bakersfield. A lot of traveling musicians played there too, in the nightclub. Alas, time took its toll, and it became first a rehabilitation place, then eventually fell into disrepair, and is no longer there now.
I was born 30 years too early.
@21:45 a truckload of new 1955 Chevrolets which was a common sight because they sold very well.
I was born at the wrong time...
This is random, but here we go. I am working on a series of historical exhibits for the Illinois State Dept of Transportation about the history of the American highway system. Is there any way to license this footage for public use?
Apologies, I couldn't find another way to get in touch with you....
When America was America and not a third world nation
You think America is a third world nation? You're crazy man. Try to live in my country.
@mars All the others first world countries has his problems, no anything is perfect, i don't think that america is very far of others first world countries. but i don't know for sure, i'm not from America.
@NorCal OntheRight I'm from Argentina. A shithole.
@mars If you compare with others third world countries from Africa and Asia. No, its not that bad, but still the economy is fucked up and we have a lot of crime and corruption.
The standard salary here is around 400$ or 500$ dollars per month, the only good thing is that the university education is free.
It’s not a third world nation economically but it’s messed up culturally and spiritually
This was America's sweet spot after WWII.
Gaaf materiaal man! Familie? Of toevallig tegengekomen?
Toevallig tegengekomen. Te mooie beelden om niet te delen met de wereld.
@@DeltaSniperZRR inderdaad super gaaf. Ik heb het deel aan de west coast grotendeels zelf gedaan in 2017 en om te zien hoe het toen uit zag met nu was geweldig. Jammer dat ze niet in San Francisco waren!
Well, traffic was still bad in Los Angeles in the 1950's.
My name is Ilya and I'm a producer in a documentary film company in Israel, Norma Productions.
We want to use a sequence, about a minute long, from this short film in our music documentary series that we produce for the Israeli public channel.
We would love to use the following archive. Do you know who is the right's owner and how can we might get a copy of the original footage?
thanks a lot,
Ilya

Is that a Jaguar @ 22:07?
Looks more like a Rolls. Note the rectangular grill; Jags sedans had a more oval grill.

This is the golden age of America
Now...well its not really bad but politics became toxic, and countries became divided
politicians always remained the same trash, so why didn´t the left overthrown LBJ for Vietnam? oh yeah because they are just imperialists and worked for him
@@Charles-hy6gp the left and the right are all the same
and also, i thought the left force LBJ to end the war not overthrow him?
@@Charles-hy6gp but i meant about people talking about politics not the politicians
but you are right, they are all trash

The Early 1970's In The United States Of America.
Though the actual video was s***** the big band music was awesome!
Well ok Boomer, I saw it.
Did you see the will to shut up?
It looks cool fun and all until you remember racism was trendy cool and hip back then so maybe I wasn’t born in the wrong generation
who the fuck told you that? racism is only cool and trendy now.
You have it all wrong
Video sucks, Music really sucks, and no narration.
