If you were wondering why there was applause when Stephen put on the moustache and went ‘baaaahhh’, it was because he was momentarily reviving a character he played in a series called Blackadder back in the 80s.
You've got to watch "Blackadder goes forth" to catch the obvious cultural reference there. Stephen Fry played Lord General Melchett. The moustache and tag line had the audience clapping because it was a callback to his role.
We don't "add the 'U'", you've removed it. There's a reason it's called "English" afterall ;) Some American changes make sense but I will defend "ou" over just "o" in most cases. Take 'colour' for example, the 'U', tells you the pronunciation is "err" rather than "orr". You say "cull-err", not "cull-orr"

The ironic thing about hateful trolling, is that those trolls are actively contributing towards building your RUclips channel through video views and ad revenue. The joke's on them!
I don't have one (yet) and I have plenty of damaged/bent moustache hairs which stick out at annoying angles due to being slept on. The face bra makes perfect sense to me.
Nick, David Mitchell hosts a radio panel show called The Unbelievable Truth that’s very similar to Qi that you’d enjoy. Probably not worth reacting to but it really showcases David’s analytical razor wit.
The reason for that thing you put round your Moustache at night, is to stop it looking like what the hair on your head looks like when you wake up in the morning.
Diy QI: In France a mouche was an ornamental beauty spot used to cover smallpox scars. So a mouche attache is one that's attached. The literal translation of une mouche is a fly (insect0.
I have inherited a moustache cup and saucer via a great grandfather. They were popular in Victorian times. I is made of fine china and is crafted with a semi circular ‘ledge’ on one side, with a semi circular gap in the middle. The ledge keeps the moustaches from touching the tea, while the tea can be drunk via the gap. Quite interesting, to persons who have never seen one and a piece of history I suppose, being probably at least 150 years old.
As everyone has mentioned Stephen was in Black Adder with Rowan Atkinson , Hugh Lawrie and many other big names . I'm surprised how many Americans only know him from Mr Bean and it's a series well worth a look . I believe Poirot used to wax his moustache so maybe the cover was to preserve the shape and keep it out of his mouth . The sound is a lot better but still not quite right .
I think it was Noah Webster of dictionary fame who removed the u from colour and favour etc. He wanted to clean up English spelling a bit. Benjamin Franklin was also a big proponent of spelling reform if I remember right 😁 I feel the same way about moustaches - I respect people who like them but I just can't get behind it myself. That said, Magnum PI's moustache is pretty good 😂

Moustaches and beards are the dirtiest bits of facehair ever: gets into everything you eat and drink, smoke bush for smokers, basically a dirty lawn on the face!!😂😂
Guys, I’ve said it before, but you need to watch the sitcom Peep Show starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb. Yes, there’s a lot of swearing in it (which you’d have to keep in because it would dilute the show a lot if you didn’t), but it’s cringe inducing humour that only the British can do, and I think you’ll love it!
Peep show and the Inbetweeners are definitely not the vibe of this channel or this couple. (I’m throwing in the Inbetweeners because they’re essentially the same show and often get requested together) I’d be embarrassed to watch them watch either. And I enjoyed both shows….when I was 18-25 years old. And 25 seemed too old.
I hope you can ignore the trolls and not let their barbs pierce your skin. Their claims are not accurate and designed to make you feel the way they feel themselves. It’s a shame and a sadness all round. And some of them simply aren’t real people.
Guys if you love David Mitchell, maybe give Upstart Crow a go?! One of our all time favourites here! (we've regularly got it on in the background for hours, in fact it's on right now 😅) It's a sitcom where he plays Shakespeare but theres always lots of bawdyness, mocking his writing and things going wrong 🤣
I'm 43 this year and I have never shaved my full face, I've had a full beard for the last 15 years, I shaved the sides of my face for about a year and I hated it. To each their own though, I just could never do the clean shaven thing personally.
I suppose it's like your hair in many ways. If you sleep on it funny, it'll be bent out of shape or sticking out in the morning. I suppose that thing would perhaps keep it all tidy?
Liked your videso and just came back to see if you are still stuffing up your vocal levels and yes you are. Your comments are nearly twice the volume of the clip. Impossible to listen to. Try listening to one of your reactions yourselves.
This audio sounded fine through my device. New tech so you’ve got to give them time for some tweaks. And it’s difficult when some viewers say it’s fine and some viewers say it isn’t.

❤ well said. i think at least one of them winced when he did it. like Stephen Fry was just belching into the mic.

I second that. They'd love Blackadder goes Forth.
Stephen putting on the moustache is also a reference to his role in Blackadder goes fourth. Highly recommended comedy series.
The delight seeing Stephen having the chance to fleetingly play General Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmany Melchet again… baaah!

The moustache (Albert Finney) "bra" thing was so waxed moustaches would not loose their shape when you slept.

In the south everybody has moustaches, including the women
Pause, comment, rewind, continue. Don't talk over the thing you're watching 👍

Nice story but sadly not true. While the word is indeed French, it’s derived from Italian, Latin and earlier Greek.

I'm not sure if you can get this in the US, but David Mitchell has a series called "Upstart Crow." He plays William Shakespeare and its hilarious

Like many English words its origin is French.

I vote we start using the Germanic "Schnurrbart" instead

ignore the trolls, your a great couple. Hello from the uk.
Spelling ("ou"): Johnson's 1755 English dictionary used Norman (French) spelling, and Webster's 1828 American Dictionary stuck to Latin spelling.
Ignore us trolls. It's really a good effort to keep up a channel like yours.....
Please do find some way to react to Blackadder, particularly Series 4. I'm sure you'll love it.

The only time David Mitchell looks less smart is when Victoria is on the programme !
Stephen Fry is super intelligent, far and above David Mitchell. David's wife, Victoria is very intelligent. She's a feminine David!

This obsession with different spellings of the same words 😂 Guess what, in some countries they speak completely different languages 😮
