Oooo next time I go to the orthodontist I’m going to sound so smart when I talk about my teeth bahaha Thank you so much Dr. Greg!!!❤️ Your videos never disappoint me😁
Love this video! Please can you do a video on the midline. And how its corrected. There aren't many videos on it on youtube and as my midline isn't central it would be a great help to know how it's treated when you have braces.
Absolutely but the problem with midlines is that it can be caused to be off for so many reasons! I'll try and think of a way to simplify it and make a video on it! =]
My orthodontist tends to use the names of the teeth instead of any numbering system when talking to pacienti. I do have a friend who is now a dentist (very proud of her, she started out working as a receptionist in a dentist's office), she taught me the FDI system. That seems to be the "standard" over here. I always kept forgetting, though which side I need to start from. Your explanation made it much more memorable for me. 😊
Haha yeah when my upper 6s brackets/tubes came off bc my teeth were too small I told my ortho assistant and they were so impressed that I knew what they’re actually called and then when I asked about powerchains they were impressed again and then eventually I told them when I was a kid I wanted to be an orthodontist so I started studying early but kind of grew out of it bc I love more of the body’s systems anatomy but still considering if med school doesn’t work out:) but thank you Dr. Greg I for sure feel smarter everyday 😂😎
My orthodontist uses the FDI numbering system.... It feels good to know the all the 3 numbering systems.....the universal, palmer and the FDI Thank you so much 💕💕💕💕💕 You are a star ⭐⭐⭐✨✨✨✨✨
Yay! Can you one day do the video about extracting teeth for braces too? There's not many about around, like what happens before during after, side effects, purpose etc. Thanks!
I'm no expert, but I'd like to put my 2 cents in, if you don't mind. They don't always extract any teeth before putting on braces. It depends on how much crowding you have. To put it simply, if your teeth won't fit in your mouth all nicely lined up, they will do an extraction (usually the first premolars, I believe). Once your teeth are all lined up, however, there won't be any gaps or anything. You won't know you're missing any teeth unless you count them and notice, that you have less than 32, because the braces will line up your bite as well, so that the teeth you do have interlock exactly the way they should. I, myself had my lower first molars extracted (no relation to the orthodontic procedure). Had quite a bit of crowding in my upper jaw, as a result I had my upper wisdom teeth surgically removed and still needed both second premolars extracted to make enough room. The 2nd premolars, not the 1st because they were already damaged, there was no point in extracting 2 healthy teeth and keeping 2 damaged ones. Now, as I am nearing the end of my orthodontic treatment the gaps in my upper jaw, were the premolars used to be are almost completely closed and we are working on closing the gaps in my lower jaw as well, where I used to have my 1st molars. Essentially, my 2nd molars will take the place of the 1st molars and my wisdome teeth will take the place of the 2nd molars. The only downside I see in this whole thing is that I need to keep the braces on for longer, than I would have had to otherwise. I still prefer this instead of getting implants in the remaining gaps.
THanks so much for chiming in dNbBabe - you made some awesome points. We definitely don't want to remove teeth but sometimes it is necessary- there are so many reasons why we do it though - I will try and brainstorm a way to make the video simple but comprehensive and make one for you guys =]
Thank you for explaining, when i was at my dentist for a checkup, they used the universal numbers and i was like "what teeth are they reffering to exactly??" I still don't know which numbers my orthodontist uses since i'm early in my treatment but i will know now thanks to you!
thank you so much for explaining this, I can finally now understand the tooth numbering. Before, I can't understand it, but after I watched your video, I can easily understand it.
My orthodontist uses the universal numbering system. I like this one, its the easiest to remember. The FDI system for me wud take some getting use to. Lol. But very informative. I learn a lot from ur videos.
You should do a video of why you became an orthodontist in the first place and what someone interested in this career should know before getting started.
My dentist, as well as my orthodontist, use the FDI system. I guess that's what common here. But I think the Palmer system is easier to understand for patients.
Ok the thing is in Ukraine we use Palmer system and I am used to it, but when I moved to the USA I noticed dentists use the universal one which was difficult for me to remember from what side to what side I should count, and now it turns out I can just keep using the Palmer system and my orthodontist will understand me, man what’s big news :) thanks for the video.
THANKS FOR THE ACCURATE EXPLANATION. PERHAPS ALL DENTISTS JUST AGREE ON ONE SYSTEM SINCE THEY ARE SO CONSIDERATE OF "THE PATIENT". HOPE DIFFERENT COUNTRIES IN DIFFERENT CONTINENTS DROP THE "DEMOCRATIC" WAY AND ADOPT A UNIQUE SYSTEM.
I have crowded teeth. The lateral incisors are behind. The dentist wants to remove the lateral incisors and wants to bring the pointed canines there. Is it okay. Will it look nice after treatment. I'm really worried. Please reply at the earliest. Thank you.
Impossible for me to tell online! I would ask your orthodontist because he/she is more familiar with your case. I have done that before depends on the scenario
Hi! superb video... by the way, do you have a video about Disturbance of tooth during Development: Defect of Enamel and Dentin?? if you don't have one, can you make about it? thank you so much!
My orthodontist uses the Palmer system! I was wondering what he was talking about when he was talking about my upper 6’s and lower 3’s 😂😂 Thanks for this video!
Hello dr. Greg. I had overbite and both my upper premolar extracted. I wonder how the upper teeth will be aligned to the lower premolar teeth, because I didn't extract any on the lower part.
This video is so helpful! I am 13 and am widely fascinated with dentistry! Are you able to make a video about the requirements necessary to become a dentist or orthodontist?
Have a question sir. I have braces on but my canine teeth are really long and well they will be pushed to the correct postion it needs to be but then of the canine tooths will grind on my bottom canine teeh which are long and sharp as well. What would my orthodontist do about my canine teeth ??
I have met several dentists. all of them use the naming when communicate with patient, and use FDI system when they communicate with their assistants. I'm from Malaysia.
I went to two orthodontists, one in my junior high school days and one in my university days because I had braces before. I didn't know what my orthodontist in my junior high days use, but I think the other orthodontist I visited in university days used FDI
Hey Dr. I was hoping you can make a quick video about time after braces because I just got mine off and I would love to see a video on how to properly clean my clear retainers and make them last for a long time.! Thank You Dr.!
I would love to see a series about different common teeth problems and how they are corrected by braces. For example, crowding: appliances and techniques used, how long this generally takes to see improvements, things to expect for the treatment of this problem, etc. Also, how to keep your teeth white with braces. I had my teeth whitened before getting braces and the flouride mouthwash (Floridex? something like that) turned my brackets yellow.
I had upper braces on yesterday. My Orthodontist said he needs to extract 2 of my lateral incisors to correct overbite. It is possible to extract other than lateral incisors?
New subs here. Dr. Greg😊 I'm planning to get braces. I have wisdom tooth in left & right upper corner but none in lower. I would like to ask if it's ok to remove those wisdom tooth in upper?. Btw thanks for vid.very informative. More power Dr. Greg❤
I knew the first two! My dentist uses universal. My orthodontist uses Palmer. I am missing my laterals and have canine sub, so I call those teeth my "6-dash-7" and my "10-dash-11". Ha! 😂😁 I also enjoy learning other terms like facial/lingual, mesial/distal...I would like to learn more terms. Also, shaping teeth...how do Orthodontists decide whether to square or round edges? Is there a science to it or simply preferences?
I have a question on bracket placements. I've noticed on videos of people getting their braces removed, the brackets are very high on the tooth. Many of my brackets are near the gumline as well, so I'm wondering if that means that tooth is meant to keep in the position it's already in?
could you make a video on the difference of traditional and damon brackets? i’m getting those brackets instead of traditional ones, and i’d like to see the difference.
I wanted to be an orthodontist growing up and didn't think I could afford school so I took a different route, but here I am, at 40 looking at teeth again. Lol. Wish I could afford to just quit my job and go back to school. I would.
I got a question why would my orthodontist put my brackets on without the wire? and now I have to wait almost 2 months for the next appointment just wondering
Hello, Can anybody help me, I need to develop a software for dental charting, but, I'm searching for a photo for each tooth separate in 3D. If anybody can help I do appreciate. Thanks,
Love this video !!! I’m currently in dental school im just learning GP but an ortho office took me under there wing and is teaching me ortho and that’s the field i want to do! But it’s alittle hard because i go 2-3 days a week for 4 hours (training) and i feel like I’m not getting or learning it fast at the pace I’m going at. They do offer ortho program at my current school and I’m debating if i should take it or not ... just to help me understand everything better and boost my skills at the office. All i do is shadow and the only hands on Iv done was impressions , x-rays & attempted to take of o ties & powerchains. I see procedures done as far as adjustments , D-bond & putting the braces on... but it’s just the steps and memorizing and also the codes etc... there still a lot and I’m learning but i don’t get a lot of hands on. I do watch or try to find RUclips viedos as far as procedures and have a better understanding of them but i can never find any good ones. Maybe you can make viedos of that ? Life as ortho and everything about ortho! I’m just stuck .. cause I’m self teaching myself and what i learn from shadowing ... idk if it’s enough and that’s why I’m debating if i should do the ortho program on top of still shadowing at the ortho office ? :/
Hey very informational video thanks! I personally have a 90% overbite and a slight cross bite do you think I will get braces. I am going to the orthodontist today.
Love your videos. I had a question, if your wisdom teeth are grown angular or impacted is it possible to straighten them with with braces or does it need to be extracted.
I have a question. I went to a consultation for braces and the Dr recommended spacing the lateral incisors and then filling that space to look the same as the central incisors. I'm really not comfortable with the idea. Yea my two front teeth are bigger but I feel I should still be able to get the braces without doing what she recommended. I do not want to fill my teeth when it's unnecessary. Does the lateral incisors have to be the same size as the central? My teeth are not even that bad. I just have a gap in front teeth and bottom 2 right teeth are cricket
You may have smaller upper incisors. I can't speak to your treament but this is something that occurs sometimes when upper laterals are too small - they dont make them the same size as the central incisors but they do make them bigger if they are smaller
I'm confused. My dentist said I'm the first person he's met in his 35 year career who is missing their "sixers". The teeth beside my two front top teeth are baby teeth thay are capped to look bigger (are they the sixers?) I also only developed one molar on the top right but two on the other side and two each side at the bottom. I never developed any wisdom teeth either. I'm in England. And have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) And am 34. I broke half my back right molar and they did a bad repair job but he won't take it out coz he said I won't be able to chew properly as I only have one molar on the top jaw that side but I can't chew that side with it so sensitive anyway so I'd rather him take it and there be no pain and I just carry on how I have been by eating on the left side since I broke it. Appreciate any advice. Thank you for the video Gem♡ Exit: I just looked in the mirror and what I thought were molars aint. Their the wrong shape. So I counted 3 molars. This must be why I've have digestion problems too Because I don't chew my food all that well because of jaw ache. I swallow most foods whole. I avoid hard food because of dislocation of my jaw. I'm thinking I should move to a liquid diet.
please tell me what hurt more spacers or braces. I got 8 spacers and I can't shew anything Its so painful . also I am getting my wisdom teeth removed next time . please what should I expect??
Hey man! So I was looking for some images on how broken braces look like but I’m still not sure, and I’m looking for these images because the wire in braces is a little bit up. However the wire didn’t break and the bracket didn’t break so I’m kinda confused on this. Is it okay if you explain to me how broken braces look like ?
If you push on the bracket, it should be able to move a bit. A "broken" bracket is when the bracket becomes detached from the tooth if that makes sense
My left incisor is behind my lateral incisor and pushing it forward It looks very ugly i stop smiling since last 7 years I'm 23 years old now Could you tell me a solution please
I suggest you see a local orthodontist for a consultation. There is not much I can do to help online but consultations are usually free and he/she can propose a treatment plan thats customized for you!
Hi I have a question! So I’ve had braces for a bit over a year now I have power chains and I just got rubber bands. But I have noticed that some top teeth still have gaps is this normal? I feel like they should all be closed by now since I have been wearing power chains and I got my rubber bands. I get them off in may and really am hoping they will close by then! Thank you!
Really helpful! Now I know what the ortho and ortho assistant are talking about. 😂 question, does the thickness of the wire ALWAYS increase whenever it's changed or is it still up to you whether to decrease/stick with the current size, etc.?
Some lucky people are born without wisdom teeth. Others get them all removed since they commonly try to come in impacted. Don't worry, you only need 28 teeth anyways.
Hey Greg can you please tell me how to get affordable braces ? I want to work in the dental field. I've grown up insecure about my smile but I want to be confident in my smile and help others achieve that too. I have crowding and an overjet and need braces but they're so expensive. I'm a college student and live on my own so it's tough to pay 6000 $ for braces. Is there anyway I could get more affordable braces??
Treatment fees vary around the world. Most orthodontist are able to make finance plans that can help make braes more affordable while you're in college. Consultations are generally free and you can discuss payment plans at that appointment!
With orthodontics it is usually very challenging / impossible to move one individual two as every action has an equal and opposite reaction... therefore when we try to move one tooth, another one may also be affected
Oooo next time I go to the orthodontist I’m going to sound so smart when I talk about my teeth bahaha
Thank you so much Dr. Greg!!!❤️
Your videos never disappoint me😁
Thank you so so much! I'm very happy that I can keep giving you guys helpful videos!
Dr. Greg I swear you make this so much easier for me! Glad you broke it down!
Aw thank you so much !! I really appreciate all you guys so much!

Thank you for this amazing demonstration video
Coming from a dental assistant
I couldn’t be more thankful
I love how enthusiastic you are😄😄
thank you so much for explaining this, I can finally now understand the tooth numbering. Before, I can't understand it, but after I watched your video, I can easily understand it.
Excellent! I've been wanting to know this for a long time. Thanks.
Easily understandable, well done Dr.
As a dental assistant student I find this super helpful thanks so much!
Of course!! Thank I'm so glad that you were able to find it helpful!

Great video n Your teeth are beautiful! Thank you for your time and consideration in teaching your growing RUclips community 😬 😀
Ah thank you so much! I really enjoy doing this =]
I have crowded teeth.

The past 2 videos you uploaded I had my appointment at the orthodontist on the same day😂
Haha no way! I planned it that way!!! jk =P
0:49
I’m going to watch this every day!
I’m confused do you start from your right Or the left of the patient to start counting
My orthodontist only talks to the dental assistant during my visits, can you tell me what a repo on tooth number 5 is
Sir my upper fornt teeth are only 5 acctuly all people have 6 but i have can i do teeth bracse ???? Plz comments
Hi! superb video... by the way, do you have a video about Disturbance of tooth during
Development: Defect of Enamel and Dentin?? if you don't have one, can you make about it? thank you so much!
Can you work on 'how the buttons (bracket?) that attach to the back of teeth work'?
Absolutely - hang tight!
Love the information. The music is overshadowing the talking a bit. Hard to condensate on the words. Probably just a me problem.
My orthodontist uses the Palmer system! I was wondering what he was talking about when he was talking about my upper 6’s and lower 3’s 😂😂 Thanks for this video!
Of course! haha Glad it helped out =] I'm sure he/she is impressed you know what theyre talking about
is Tooth 3 the same as tooth 14, my new crown #3 is rounded on the inside totally differnt shape of tooth #14.
Hello dr.
Great video! Been reading/watching informative videos related to having braces cuz about to get one. More power to your channel!
THat's so great! Thank you so much for the kind words =]
Yessss new video I’ve always wanted to know what the names are of the teeth thank you very much:)
So happy to help out w/ that!
Which one do you use in dental school in the USA?
Have a question sir. I have braces on but my canine teeth are really long and well they will be pushed to the correct postion it needs to be but then of the canine tooths will grind on my bottom canine teeh which are long and sharp as well. What would my orthodontist do about my canine teeth ??
Sir is normal that you chew it with the incisors?
This was so confusing for me at first because my top 12 yr molars or 2nd molars are still growing in, and I have no wisdom teeth
I think there's a typo error in universal. It says univeral
lolll i know! I saw it like the next day and it was too late to change it!!
MY FAVOURITE DOCTOR!!
My favorite RUclips community!
Thank you Dr! It’s easier to study with the teeth model ☺️
I have met several dentists. all of them use the naming when communicate with patient, and use FDI system when they communicate with their assistants. I'm from Malaysia.
Thanks for this Video it helps me a lot ,but I have a question Doc. ,that molar it is best for destruction when we getting braces for class II?
So you count the wisdom teeth top and not bottom?
In FDI system which tooth will be number 17?
I went to two orthodontists, one in my junior high school days and one in my university days because I had braces before. I didn't know what my orthodontist in my junior high days use, but I think the other orthodontist I visited in university days used FDI
How do you tell if you have a skeletal overjet or dental overjet? (I hope I used the right word)
You definitely used the right words but we use x-rays and measurements to assess whether it is one or the other (usually its a combination of both)
Braces Explained ok great I have a consultation soon, I’ll ask what he thinks it is. 😁
Hey Dr. I was hoping you can make a quick video about time after braces because I just got mine off and I would love to see a video on how to properly clean my clear retainers and make them last for a long time.! Thank You Dr.!
I was wondering if you could tell me, how do Orthodontists fix teeth that come down sideways?
Kindly tell us what does L7 and L8 mean.
I would love to see a series about different common teeth problems and how they are corrected by braces. For example, crowding: appliances and techniques used, how long this generally takes to see improvements, things to expect for the treatment of this problem, etc. Also, how to keep your teeth white with braces. You got it
Awesome! Thank you :) Can't wait!
I had upper braces on yesterday. My Orthodontist said he needs to extract 2 of my lateral incisors to correct overbite. It is possible to extract other than lateral incisors?
Impossible for me to tell online but best person to ask would be your doc!
Thanks so much for this! Now I'll finally understand what my orthodontist is talking about.😂 My orthodontist uses the Palmer counting system.
That's the one I usually use too! =]
Yep ha
Can you put magic teeth braces on dentures
Would you be able to go over screw braces please??
Are you referring to mini screws? I have a video about them called TADs - check it out!
FDI system, thanks Dr
Do we feel it when our teeth is moving with braces? its been 3months i hav had braces i don't see any difference i have an overbite issue
Ha! 😂😁
I also enjoy learning other terms like facial/lingual, mesial/distal...I would like to learn more terms.
Also, shaping teeth...how do Orthodontists decide whether to square or round edges?
Is there a science to it or simply preferences?
my ortho is using 55, 65, and Q3? what does that mean? TIA
Thanks for this video, great work as always.. My ortho uses the Palmer system and the brackets used are only numbered 1 to 5.
That's great! Basically what I do too =]
I have a question on bracket placements. I've noticed on videos of people getting their braces removed, the brackets are very high on the tooth. Many of my brackets are near the gumline as well, so I'm wondering if that means that tooth is meant to keep in the position it's already in?
Not necessarily - there are a lot of different techniques for braces placement!
I extracted my both upper and lower right and left number 5 for orthodantics. And was literally crying for missing them for ever😔
=[ aww - I'm sure it will look great though now that you have that space to line up your teeth
@@DrGregAsatrian Yes, I'm seeing the result rn😄
could you make a video on the difference of traditional and damon brackets? i’m getting those brackets instead of traditional ones, and i’d like to see the difference.
I have damon braces :)
Absolutely ! Hang tight on that!
I wanted to be an orthodontist growing up and didn't think I could afford school so I took a different route, but here I am, at 40 looking at teeth again. Lol. Wish I could afford to just quit my job and go back to school. I would.
This video was so helpful, thank you! Could you possibly do a video explaining molar bands and why only some orthodontists use them?
Yea! definitely!
I got a question why would my orthodontist put my brackets on without the wire? and now I have to wait almost 2 months for the next appointment just wondering
It really depends on the scenario. Sometimes we do it to allow the teeth to settle, or prepare ourselves for when the teeth are ready for a wire
If I already missing one of my lower big molar.. can I still get braces?
Can you please explain bite plates?
Absolutely! Hang tight =]

Of course! I have a few already but more common!
Portugal here, my dentist and my ortho both use FDI. Had to take out my 4ths (pre molars), so my 24, 34 and 44 (i dont have 14)
Thank you very much!
Please post more videos!!
I'm trying! My goal is every other Saturday morning= ] Next one comes out this Saturday @ 9AM PST
Could u do a video about teeth extractions while having braces
Yeah sure! Hang tight =]
Hey very informational video thanks! I personally have a 90% overbite and a slight cross bite do you think I will get braces. I am going to the orthodontist today.
You might! What'd they say?!
Love your videos. I had a question, if your wisdom teeth are grown angular or impacted is it possible to straighten them with with braces or does it need to be extracted.
Its all on a case by case basis ! I would ask your orthodontist
Can you do a video about IPR? I think that's what it's called. My orthodontist said that was my next step with my braces.
Absolutely ! Hang tight!
Love u Dr.greg , u the best ❤❤❤
Ahh thank you! I love you guys too =]
I have a question.
Thank you for the video

I just looked in the mirror and what I thought were molars aint. Their the wrong shape. So I counted 3 molars. This must be why I've have digestion problems too Because I don't chew my food all that well because of jaw ache. I swallow most foods whole. I avoid hard food because of dislocation of my jaw. I'm thinking I should move to a liquid diet.
Thank u sm dr 🧡🧡
please tell me what hurt more spacers or braces. I got 8 spacers and I can't shew anything Its so painful . also I am getting my wisdom teeth removed next time . please what should I expect??
Most people agree that spacers are the worst part of braces
Braces Explained great news thank you doctor
My left incisor is behind my lateral incisor and pushing it forward
It looks very ugly i stop smiling since last 7 years I'm 23 years old now
Could you tell me a solution please
I suggest you see a local orthodontist for a consultation. There is not much I can do to help online but consultations are usually free and he/she can propose a treatment plan thats customized for you!
Hi I have a question! So I’ve had braces for a bit over a year now I have power chains and I just got rubber bands. But I have noticed that some top teeth still have gaps is this normal? I feel like they should all be closed by now since I have been wearing power chains and I got my rubber bands. I get them off in may and really am hoping they will close by then! Thank you!
I would think that your ortho would definitely close your gaps before taking your braces off
Thanks dr 😀😀😀
Really helpful! Now I know what the ortho and ortho assistant are talking about. 😂 question, does the thickness of the wire ALWAYS increase whenever it's changed or is it still up to you whether to decrease/stick with the current size, etc.?
Great question! Not always. Sometimes we need to step down for certain movements
Omg why dont I have a third molar????? I only have 14 teeth on the upper and lower teeth (28 overall)
Because your wisdom teeth haven't come out yet?
Some lucky people are born without wisdom teeth. Others get them all removed since they commonly try to come in impacted. Don't worry, you only need 28 teeth anyways.
Palmer system: I have to get my lower left and lower right 8s removed on November 17, 2018. I'm like so nervous.
You're going to do great ! Most people have 8s removed!
I need to have all 4 of mine removed (upper and lower 8s). :(
For my braces, they had to remove 4 pre molars, 2 up and down,, now i only have one pre molar each
quite common!
Can someone give me a name which is made of 8 alphabet and starts with den
Hey Greg can you please tell me how to get affordable braces ? I want to work in the dental field. I've grown up insecure about my smile but I want to be confident in my smile and help others achieve that too. I have crowding and an overjet and need braces but they're so expensive. I'm a college student and live on my own so it's tough to pay 6000 $ for braces. Is there anyway I could get more affordable braces??
Treatment fees vary around the world. Most orthodontist are able to make finance plans that can help make braes more affordable while you're in college. Consultations are generally free and you can discuss payment plans at that appointment!
How to move single tooth..incisor central..
With orthodontics it is usually very challenging / impossible to move one individual two as every action has an equal and opposite reaction... therefore when we try to move one tooth, another one may also be affected
I’m getting my braces off in 3 weeks I’m so excited 😆
Najma Khaliif you should probably consult your orthodontist about that
Definitely right Ciara & omg that's so awesome! Congrats!!!
