Kind of makes me think of Spare Squadron in Ace Combat 7.

Seeing as the Ravine Raid in AC7 was ripped from Area 88, I imagine Spare Squadron was heavily based on the Aslanian Foreign Legion/Area 88 crew, just with them veing a penal unit instead of mercs
