Some Barbour jackets are meant for layering, you wouldn't wear some of them in the UK with just a t-shirt under it. As such it's made roomier to accommodate a sweater/jumper underneath.
This is definitely true, some of the ones I've seen that are measured on the roomier side I've seen worn by people wearing a tweed jacket or a thick wool jumper underneath, so they're definitely intended for cold weather where the jacket itself isn't the primary warming part of the layering, but rather keeps the underneath warming layers dry. I have a quilted waxed jacket and it runs a lot slimmer than the more traditional offerings, precisely because it's got a bit of insulation as part of its design.
@@sherbear9452 Always going to get sweaty arms with a TShirt as Barbours are not breathable like Gortex for example. I would wear a sweatshirt in summer and a pullover or hoodie in winter.
I’ve inherited a jacket from my grandad who bought one in the nineties. It’s beautifully warn and I know that I’m going to be able to wear it forever because you can send it to them for repair.
Short answer - yes. I own the bedale wax jacket for 40 Fahrenheit and up. A quilted coat for below 40, and a vest for Fall. I wear the bedale and vest when I shoot sporting clays and use the pockets for my shells. The bedale is absolutely incredible in terms of weight, versatility, and comfort. Highly recommend. I am a 44 in a suit and wear a 40 in the bedale.
I buy Barbour because of the history of the brand and because I don’t wear clothes made from plastic. Just got my Game Parker. And have my Bedale for years. It’s now the perfect combination.
Bought a Beaufort three years ago. Wear it with a suit, Harris tweed jacket, vest, sweater or just alone with a long sleeve shirt and jeans. A classic design which is quite noticeable when out and about.
My husband and I purchased Barbour jackets in the early 1980's while he was stationed in the Navy at Holy Loch Scotland. WONDERFUL, and we used the wax spray. One issue, we then had a long hair cat, who liked to sleep in the closet. One warm summer and we had skipped wearing the jackets for a year, SO MUCH FUR STUCK ON THE JACKET. We washed them by hosing them off, and... after 10 years we were "We kind of need simpler jackets with kids and cats" (later a dog). I still miss my wax one, but have a fabulous quilted one for Spring and Fall and it will never go out of fashion. (also check for sales after the holidays). But, unless you are REALLY into the outdoors and vintage feel, that wax is good to skip. Also if you are fishing and around water at all, the wax is terrific as the new tech stuff... especially in SEA WATER, will not work. Seriously, sea water will ruin your expensive Patagonia. And the wax does require upkeep, hose it down and spray new wax on...
The Engineered Garments jacket is meant to be be oversized. It’s the purpose of that brand and cut. The Dept B isn’t the tokito version, that’s the original one used in Skyfall. Your Dept B is the re-issue. Great video though!
Had 2 Barbours. My first was a second hand one. Got lucky with it. My second was a new one and not cheap. They need to be maintained, waxed regularly to keep the finish and coat from looking tatty. If you look after them, they last for many, many years, provided you don’t gain too much weight
They're sized for layering. These are equestrian and hunting jackets originally. You're supposed to wear something like a sweater, quilted vest, or even a tweed jacket or something under it. The waxed jackets are intended to be worn as a shell.
Absolutely, love Barbour! I have got 5 of them already, and was looking to get a Bedale too. You're right, their sizings are quite tricky to get it right firsthand. May I know which size is that Bedale you are wearing? I have similar built like you. - JG, UK
I have two Barbour wax jackets, an Ashby and a grendle. The Grendle is a sort of hunting/military coat with padding for winter, and have worn both in extreme rain here in the UK and both dealt with it perfectly.
Sizing, look at the specific jacket, there are fits within sizes : tailored, relaxed, regular, etc .. I'm usually a 44/XL in Bedale, Beaufort & Trooper, but I'm a 2XL in a Lutz - as it's a tailored fit. So chest - inches or cm - adjust by fit (size up or down) tailored, relaxed or regular.
I've been really liking it so far. It's definitely closer to a tailored coat than a baggy one. I usually get a 2Xl, but for that i went for a 3Xl, which I'm glad I did. I've had it for about 8 months and still like new and even thrown it in the wash a few times. It works in light drizzle but not good in heavy rain. It's a coat I can definitely recommend but if possible try it on first If you can't I'd say order the next size up if you don't want it too tight
@SubaruWRC1996 appreciate the info! I'm probably going to order two sizes that I think will fit me well, and then return one. Can't decide on which color I want yet
Glad to see im not the only who loves Coats and Jackets, im not really into Barbour im more of a bomber leather jacket like Schott wearer and stuff like that but hopefully one day ill get a barbour but i feel like where i live it doesnt rain enough for that purchase..looks amazing tho I love colder seasons the fact that we have to wear jackets and coats brings me joy ahaha

I’ve ironically been in the midst of creating a video on the Bedale. My most worn jacket - I’ve had a couple. They are just so casually cool and functional. And the hand pockets at the ribs are the best thing I didn’t know I needed.
Hi Dominic I have a few Barbour jackets but I don’t have a Bedale, I would like to see your video when you post it. I am currently considering buying the heavier (8 ounce) Winter Bedale, looks like a nice jacket, any thoughts?
@@christopherlee5950 Just saw this! I'd actually recommend the OG Bedale - 6oz, I think? This jacket is really more of an all-arounder, rather than handling extreme cold by itself. The move is just to layer with technical gear underneath. I had a Cerium LT hoody under mine today (8* F) and worked great. Barbour also sells linings that you can zip into them. Cheers! p.s. They run big!
Just got a quilted jacket as a present. Had one in the past, long time ago so I’m glad I have another… the only small gripe I have is the jacket fits really well in the body but the sleeves….are just a touch longer than I would like
Hi Mark, nice reviews and collections. I own a barbour beacon sports and a classic bedale, they are my staples for fall. The x to ki/commander/beacon sports jacket has one of the weirdest sizing I've experienced (long arms, narrow shoulder and tight chest) so glad to see you can somehow make it work. I believe the covert jacket runs large because the current japanese fashion trend is to have baggy fit. I would love a detailed video on that covert jacket actually. It seems like an interesting jacket for spring/early fall and the material doesn't quite look like waxed cotton.
Barbour has different 'fits'. So slimmer jackets like the Ashby vs the looser traditional fit of the Bedale. The reason is the need for layering, usually you would wear a thick jumper etc underneath for farming. So sizing does change depending on their fit vs your preference but yes some navigating to do. Also you can continue to rewax the jackets I do it every two years and they should keep them for a very long time.
I Owned the Barbour Commander. And it looked great. But the wearability sucks. The polyester layer inside the jacket make it a real sweat machine. I sold it. I Also own the Corbridge(winter jacket) and the Bedale and Beaufort, i love those jackets.
I have yet to try Barbour in spite of knowing the brand and their history. I own 7 Belstaff jackets/coats - 2 of them are Belstaff Trialmasters. I know Barbour makes a similar wax jacket.

So yes Barbour coats/jackets are not inexpensive but I agree with you that they are worth the price!
Yes they may be a little more expensive than other similar jackets but if cared for will last a lifetime. Barbour jackets are another brand such as Levi’s that are absolutely timeless classics

Hey! Thanks for the video :) what color is your Classic bedale? Cause i bought one Olive color and I think its too dark and not green like yours 😅…. Maybe a brand new waxed jacket is darker? Thanks a lot!
Yes you will always find a newly waxed jacket will appear darker. As the fabric wears for general use the fabric will lighten . However bear in mind that as fabric looses wax it will gradually loose its ability to repel rain water . Then you will experience ‘ wetting out ‘ where the fabric soaks up the rain water .
Hey Mark, love your videos! You might be able to zip your quilted jacket at least into the Bedale jacket. At least it works for some of the Barbour quilted vests. Cheers from Germany!

Every clothing company should provide a chart of measurements for every style. Shoulder width, arm length, pit to pit, waist, and collar to bottom. As a standard. So frustrating how so few do this. Some who do provide charts on measurements by labeled size will do this as a general rule and not provide garment style specific measurements. This is why buying lightly used is a good way to go, as you can ask a seller for those measurements.

The made in UK line is exactly the same as they have been for the past century or so. Same materials, same stitching, same finishing, same QC. Non in house models may be cheaper , but why would anybody want a non UK made Barbour anyway?
Barbour are way over hyped. I bought a classic green bees wax jacket that I always wanted when I was a kid. Their zipper are crazy hard to put on, the jacket itself is too rigid and not very comfortable, the only reason I put up with them is because I love the timeless looks. I found a similar Brooks Brother in dark blue and the fit and finish was far superior that I never looked back. I did try the Barbour once more but again the damn zipper had me so frustrated that I gave up and reach for the Brooks. I get that its the original but to me its not worth the hassle so its just there in the closet.
A good Barbour, especially a new one, will need a bit of breaking in. They’re always stiff to start with. Just wear it and get it wet. It’ll soon relax

Put a bit of lube on the zip, graphite from a pencil, rub it in the beginning of the zip
Rub either a small amount of WD40 if you have it or grab some sewing machine oil. You don’t need much.
A good Barbour, especially a new one, will need a bit of breaking in. They’re always stiff to start with. Just wear it and get it wet. It’ll soon relax
I suspect you may have problems with the dexterity of your hands if you cannot manage a YKK zip !
