  • It's a Planet FPL Correspondent debut for Ipswich Town fan Paul Gaught-Allen as he joins James for a chat on all things The Tractor Boys following their back to back promotions to the Premier League.
There's discussion on the history of the club and previous successes, the club's previous spells in the Premier League in the nineties and noughties which had highs before falls ahead of 'twenty years of decay' which saw Ipswich fall as low as mid-table in League One.
But two key changes, firstly through new ownership and then the appointment of Kieran McKenna began upward trajectory back to the top flight. But will the manager still be in charge come August!?
Plus, there's discussion on the rivalry with Norwich and the chances of surviving in the Premier League next season.

My first Town game was v Charlton in Divison 2 , 1967, we won 3-2. Town were promoted to Division 1 in 1968. Bobby Robson after a stuttering start became a terrific manager. During his 13 years he only bought 14 players using the youth system to produce fantastic players like Burley, Beattie, Butcher, Osman, Walk , Brazil etc. We were mostly top 6, qualified for Europe 8 times and to this day have never lost in Europe at a home fixture over 31 games. Other than the Robson era we qualified for Europe a further 4 times so 12 in total. Having been in the Wilderness since 2002 we are now back thanks to the new owners, Mark Ashton and Kieron McKenna. If we can keep McKenna I honestly believe we will see another era akin to the Robson days 🤞🙏🏻💙💙

Your comment provides an example of how much the game has changed since your first Town game. These days many clubs will sign 14 players in 2 or 3 transfer windows, not 13 years. I'm looking forward to the new season and a new chapter in the club's history, hopefully with McKenna at the helm.

Geoff is bang on there. Football has changed so much, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be proud of those achievements. For a “provincial club” to be such a force is incredible.

I remember one of my first games was against Ipswich. During Stamford Bridge rebuild, sat in the temporary south stand. Dennis Wise scored that day.

Worst case scenario: if McKenna does leave, Ipswich would be an attractive job for an aspiring manager.

Thanks James. That’s a kind thing to say. Fingers crossed on KM but Geoff is right, we’d be recruiting as a PL club with a lot going for it. No Paul Lamberts now! If Davis shows similar form against PL players he’s got to be close you’d think.
