Homelessness plagues Waikiki pavilion, where vendors were supposed to put up shop

- Once open with tables for chess and checker players, Pavilion 4 nearest to the volleyball courts, has always been a refuge for the homeless.
How about electing people that believe in enforcing the law rather than worrying about people's feelings.
Yup. You get what you vote for.
And whats the next step? They go to jail for a week and come out, only to do the same thing? You put them in prison for 20 years? Come on, this is a way deeper issue than "Homeless people are bad and lazy"
How about people that go to church & actually understand Jesus teachings?
How about a world in which "OMG, you want a livable wage? LMAO that will increase inflation" is replaced by "How much do you expect for rent & not increase inflation?"
Capitalism is fuk'd in the head.

This pavilion is near the police station and it still cannot be secured. Thats so sad.
Make that into a police dept kiosk!!
That is what I thought.
The police have a tiny substation close by to that area, I think.
@@MaureenKo1 It does but can add more police patrol or lifeguards.
I'll keep saying it: Hawaii needs a "police box" system like Japan. Every block or few-block area has a police box with the policeman who has it as THEIR beat so they get to know everyone, everyone gets to know them, they know the bad actors and can stop trouble before it gets bad.
No thanks, just replace the Democrat Foliticians
I miss seeing the folks playing chess and/or checkers.
What a shame! When I moved to Hawaii in 1979 I used to walk down from the Waikiki Banyan where I stayed a few months and played chess on the beach there. I've been back to Hawaii several times over the years and can see things deteriorating quickly in Honolulu.
Affordable - Never use the word affordable in Hawaii. See what affordable looks like?
It's happening everywhere. It's bad here in Portland Oregon too
The homeless and druggies are winning. And they never get tired of winning.
Liberals

How about in other U.S. territories such as Guam?? Are they being plagued with homelessness too??
Liberal policies bring crime, starvation and suffering. You dummies voted for this, now live with it.
As a City "Bus Operator" ive picked up a lot of transients from the airport who just arrived from the mainland that have hopped on my bus route 20 heading towards IHS or to Waikiki. Thats the bigger problem. Too many transients moving to Hawaii.
This advice is from a person who has first hand knowledge of where the problem starts. From incoming at the airport. Too bad they’re not listening to you.
First, thank you for your service. Grew up riding DaBus and I'm old enough to remember the old diesel buses - whoo those things were kinda pilau! Any gov't official wants to know what's going on, *ask the bus drivers* they know what's going on.
@Fred Trump The problem is, they've got the whole California coast up through Los Angeles, a good part of the West Coast of Mexico and the Baja Peninsula, plus the US coast from Texas all the way around Florida and up into the Carolinas, that also have survivable weather and JOBS. Hawaii is no place to bum it.

Too bad we don’t have the Covid restrictions.
Bring back the chess tables!! That is my hangout area for the past 2 decades. If you occupy it with a vendor as long there’s tables again.
A new Starbucks would be better though, -am I right?

It's just about renting pavilions so the Homeless can't use them !!! Right ???

The Hawaii government shuts down small business then wonders why they have a homeless problem?
homelessness has nothing to do with goverment , is lazy peoples fault.
@@Boobooli Shutting small business down. Covid regulations. Low income homes. Home zoning. Inflation. Taxes. Interest rates. Land development. Education. Public transportation. Food. Gas. All I need is a a one-way plane ticket and I too can arrive in your fair city and demand to be taken care of. Here I come Hawaii!!!
That “board members” suggestions are ridiculous. Lock up your jet skies or motorcycles there then you will have to come patrol. Okay
She was a sweet old lady only thinking in terms of being helpful. But that tiny piece of land has to be used for income generating. She’s not remembering what a chunk of valuable space that is.
Sell weed.
Or is mj still officially illegal still?
The government can rent the space. I used to work in acquisitions for the public sector and we rented spaces from companies before. A firm fixed priced contract guaranteeing a multi year lease agreement. This way the business can’t increase the rate or charge the city more but the vendor is guaranteed a steady check every month. I think it’s a win win, but also remember that Hawaii is unique in regards to its eminent domain law.
You think i dont know what im saying ive never done drugs juat got off the streets 3 months ago and i paid attention even tried to help, got invited to a city meeting to find out the human resource agency and the 3 biggest churches in the town were using the human tragedy to justify the inflated budgets they line their pockets with
Just quit handing out 'crazy' money and throw these hermits OUT!!!!
An impossible solution to a leftist.
The system is a bigger plague…lol
Sad. I used to live a few blocks away from here during college. I remember people used to hang out there, but it was always so benign.
Before rampant drugs and homelessness, sadly.
I remember the chess players, in fact I think they were even mentioned in the book "Searching For Bobby Fischer". Now all gone, how long are we going to let bums destroy our lives?
That's what the animals say about the forest.

Shave ice, Shave ice, Shave ice...
Homelessness will become worse and worse in this inflation.
All time record 11 Million + open jobs. No excuse.
Cost of rent is too high
it’s because states like NYC, California, & Florida are sending their homeless to Hawai’i with a one way ticket. We should block those people or send them return trip or charge that state sending them to take care of their well being.
Hawaii needs more Democrats, so in Texas, we give our homeless and pharmaceutically challenged the opportunity. They jump on those Hawaii tickets like a hooker on a ham sandwich.
Florida is sending them to Mule's Mug's back yard- Martha's VIneyard
Shave ice stand... would be the best and ultimate want... especially next to a beach under the hot hawaiian sun...
How about you just tear the thing down?
How about securing the pavilion with iron instead of aluminum foil?
Homeless is all over the island, you don't want them there, you don't want them on the beach, where they post to go on the mountain.
Back to where they came from!!!!
So you also want the local island people homeless go to the mainland also, that sad throwing your own people off the island
Why would it be an issue for them to set up camp in the woods instead of the city? Is it really so bad to have to walk a little bit to get somewhere? Most people wouldn't have an issue with the homeless if they were out of sight and not being a nuisance.
Don’t need another crappy shaved ice or hot dog stand, bring back the chess tables and put up some good bathrooms and trash cans and it will be nice again .
Pay me 50 bucks an hour and I'll do security there
I am sure it would be well spent! That's all these lowlifes understand!
Fix the homeless situation first. Not all are mentally ill. Some need a home. Have compassion hawaii

Pride of Hawaii.
How does this all go on literally next door to the police department? Maybe they need to take the covers off their windows so they can see what's going on.
Most homeless in Waikiki aren’t even from here, that’s where the problem starts, they coming from the mainland
Sounds like you need some flights of illegal immigrants also! That would be awesome for you commie liberal Democrat scumbag idiots!
None of them are. None.
They want vendors because that tiny area is still (per square foot) some prime real estate, not to just be used as a storage area. They want an income generating establishment to pay huge rent and rightly so. Right on the beach line with hoards of foot traffic? Even if they sold spam musubi and water all day they’d “clean up” a tidy sum.
Seriously put up one shave ice stand during the day, later at night Spam musubi or toriyaki/kushiyaki, hire some roided-up Micronesian security guards, it could be a beautiful thing.
Well maybe set up an outreach kiosk for people that need help. Use it a staging area for community out reach. I know they have an office in Waikiki but a lot of them won't don't want to go to an office, medical facility. Just thinking outside of the box. Forget the revenue, maybe an outreach program that is in their face every day of the year. It could build some trust with the people down there as well as those that live in the community. Kiosk could go both ways. Inform the community what is being done and help those that need it.

this is all happening a right in front of the HPD Waikiki substation. there are always police officers around so how is it this area has so much challenges? Racks being burned, attacks on people, and all this that you are reporting. But the big question is why with all the blue around? When I go to Waikiki all I see are police officers walking / driving around. How come? Just curious...
This would be a good reporting story to have. If you already did one please send my way to watch. I can't find anything on this subject.

In the 60s and 70s Waikiki was so safe 24/7!!! WTF HAPPENED???
Arrest them all and send them to work already
really shows you the holes in these people's logic and understanding of space. if the city owns the space, no one really owns it or has any incentive to care for it. that's the whole problem to begin with, but their suggestions are to involve the state in the problem even more... sell the property and let someone take care of it, is the obvious solution.
Right, "great solution" that totally ignores personal responsibility.

I wouldn’t put any bikes , Police equipment, canoes, or anything else in that area a lot of people think the best use would be a concession stand serving cold drinks and limited on the food maybe fresh flowers for the tourist , Beautiful and hand strong leis. Maybe we can use on the outside of the walls To protect from the thieves a better locking system heavy duty walls for the exterior and a camera for security because we all know it’s right next to the police area and then we keep them on the ball and the area safe as well. As far as a The Home less population there are plenty abandoned buildings that could be renovated and accommodated temporary while they’re going to therapy and helping them find a job and creating careers Like a vocational school to help them become more self-sufficient and to prosper in the community versus being a menace and looking down at them a lot of them have a lot of potential they just need help

All that tax. Still a problem, I bet if we give it more, still go get worse. "The rich get richer, the poor get poorer". I mean what can a person do here we live paycheck after paycheck and the politicians here get wealthier. "Tax is theft".
Vote those politicians out of office and get some that will do what the people of Hawaii want done.
That Hawaiian Ice is fire 🔥 🤣
homelessness is so sad and so gross. The hard truth is no amount of money or affordable housing or help can't sway a person that chooses that lifestyle and drugs. if these supposed solutions worked we would have solved this issue a long, long time ago. It will get worse and democrats will continue to blame everyone and everything but the homeless themselves. Its no surprise as accountability and common sense is also in short supply these days, esp in a blue state. I say fight this issue aggressively, increase police force to patrol these areas and go after these that made this choice and continue to live this way. A plague or an infestation needs to be dealt with otherwise it'll just get worse and worse. If you can't help yourself then we or the government can't help you. It's that simple. Send them to prison where they can get three hots and a cot and most importantly a bath/shower. Still expensive but it is cheaper in the long run than providing programs and building houses they will just turn down or destroy and turn into another eye sore of Hawai'i. If you don't believe this then look at california's homeless problem.
Well said! 👍
That’s bullshit. Poverty and lack of education and mental health are the highways that lead us to this.

Every administration knows exactly what the problem is, homeless on every island, but the truth is this Some do know how to handle the problem but the homeless are protected in some way or another, Yes we know that some of the homeless are from other States, why don't we send them back they were sent here on purpose they were homeless in another state but yet why don't we send them back !?
But that would not solve the problem, the problem is that the local people can't buy homes, the housing market is too high, the rental market is too high. More local people each year are leaving this state, and the truth is this, Hawaii wants to become a high expense state, To put it another way, it wants to be a state for the elites, wealthy, rich this is a true fact.
This state only wants to have "2 types of people" rich and poor no middle class, the poor will work for the rich.

He currently has a $1500 stimulus check plan for people who make $50,000-$250,000 a year to help them with the rising cost of everything. But not a dime for those on social security or disability.
I'm in Cali right now and I'm all for it. We've got huge areas with just nothing, we can get up camps to stick the buggers in, free food, free drugs, screen B movies let 'em play hacky sack or bumfights or whatever they want, let them live their chosen lifestyle away from decent people. Our governor is actually talking about taking at least the crazier street zombies and committing them and it's about time.

Well what do people expect when they price out the locals who cannot afford to live on their homeland. Remember, this is occupied land, this was land of the Hawaiians....not the land of USA and Europeans.....white man came.....yup we seen the result in most lands where white man came. We have no consideration for the land itself nor its native culture, oftentimes they are the worst hit, not exclusively but most of the time. We do not live in a community where the first thing we say is ' how can we help those people get their self respect back and quit drugs'....no we look for the worst ways, 'get them out of here, put them in prison bla bla bla...' we have no concept of humanity, compassion nor love and respect, as we would not be in this situation to start with. I would say if USA stopped the occupation of this land, and all westerners left, balance would restore itself. I am westerner myself but I see the impact we have had on this planet and it aint great. Compassion and understanding and dealing with the problem at its core, first then we will get results. More humanity, less machine world and roboit 'repeaters', parrot people with no mind of their own who just follow after what media says or who just repeats what others say and in so doing creates myths, lies basically, just to not have to take any action, or care.
