Curly on fire is probably actually happening as Jimmy is having his NDE. Man on fire. Twice. That insomnia? Was the bell of fate. Why have a lock on a cockpit as Captain if you are just going to let your first officer "handle things" Curly and Sanwea could've persuaded Daisuke just by having Anya admit the truth. Then they could have... put Jimmy on ice. 🎉 Great review!
I'm convinced this must be an incognito channel for some youtuber with 10M subscribers, a social experiment to prove that youtube success is about skill rather than luck.
One thing that still gets me is how the silence lingers just uncomfortably long enough to make us worry after Jimmy kills himself, because he doesn't even make sure the pod turns on properly before doing it. Like could you even imagine???
Furthermore when Jimmy is having his out of body experience curly is sitting and on fire. He was sitting in the cryo-pod too so I actually think curly was burned alive.
@TheZackofSpades there is no science that exists for human cryostasis that I'm aware of... but Swansea was pretty damn certain it would work. Curly wouldn't feel as much being burned alive a second time to be frank. It would not be comfortable but eh. As to his wounds and "freezing him" i can only imagine that would be MORE uncomfortable. "Shut up Jimmy, just let me burn out this time." Lol
He lowkey built like gilver from the dmc novel- I kid, of course. I could see how that may have been the case when the video talked about feeding curly the painkillers.
If the crew survived then Anya would 100% get into medical school. She managed to keep curly alive for 4 months straight with little to no medical supplies whatsoever.
@@thegermanfool8953 according to extra lore from the game devs she failed nursing school over half a dozen times, and i feel like that gives us another hint about this game's universe. anya obviously understands the material, but she's probably having to work so many hours to pay for school that it's impossible to balance her studies with wage slave bullshit.
@@b.collins2656So not far off from our own reality right now. Man, I would trust Anya with my life if she's capable of keeping a mangled, limbless man like curly from dying from shock, trauma or infection for 4 months straight with only bandages and painkillers. She's genuinely a top-tier nurse, and could even become a doctor with skills and knowledge. That's genuinely impressive!
I love how Jimmy basically foreshadowed how the rest of the story would go when he says: "for better or worse, I'm captain now." Turns out, it was for the worst.
it honestly doesn't matter, the real issue was opening the cargo hold. I'm very familiar with this dev team's work, the data mosh screen wipes with time displacement are a bit of a calling card for them. The trouble unfurls when they cling to hope in the haul. Regardless of who was in charge, they lose all hope at that point ( which was already pretty low ) and the intoxicated Swansea cements everyone's fate. However... they can decide if they go Up or Down
Or you weren’t paying attention? the horse is supposed to represent her and that’s why the moon screen she loved was behind it but it’s because if you remember him talking about having dirty thoughts about the horse it’s him confronting Anya because all he saw her as was “sex”
These videos are great and i hope you will go really far. Your Darkwood video was randomly recomended to me when it was your first video and even then i knew big things were coming for this channel.
Oh hey look I'm there! :0 Anya was a character I personally really resonate with, so I enjoyed voicing her! Happy to see the video put together for everyone to see now! 💜
You know what's even worse about Jimmy assaulting Anya? IMO: The action in and of itself is already irredeemable. If Jimmy was just acting out on some control fantasy, that's one thing. But no. He didn't do it for his own pleasure or for a "moment of dominance". He did it as just another "unfortunate thing" to throw back at Curly. Only did it to use against Curly as another jab for why him being deemed a "good Captain" is BS. "You are the Captain. You are responsible for everything that happens here. YOU, Curly, will take the fall for this." Jimmy used Anya as a point and excuse against Curly, and Curly had no choice but to agree OR do something about it...only to prove Jimmy right that Curly wouldn't do anything. Curly's inaction allowed Jimmy to commit any action he wanted knowing full well he'd get away with it, no matter how bad. Curly would be blamed for "letting" Jimmy do whatever he wanted, including assaulting Anya. After all, crew safety is the responsibility of the captain. Jimmy thought so little of Anya that I genuinely don't believe he would have even touched her if not for his hatred of Curly. And when Jimmy was finally put into a position of responsibility, he couldn't handle it, not when the consequences were literally catching to him. And when the very real possibility that this was too far gone to wholly get away with came up, Jimmy crashed the ship, preferring to rewrite the narrative and die a hero long before being rightfully punished for anything he did. The one time Curly wouldn't/couldn't take the entire fall for him, it collapsed. To Jimmy, Curly was a scapegoat while Anya was collateral damage. Nothing more and nothing less.
And he NEVER mentions what he did. To Jimmy, assaulting Anya was so little that he doesn't even THINK about her when he apologizes. Even when he "feels" sorry, he does for himself, and maybe for Curly, but he has no guilt for what he did to her at all. He's just sorry he ended up in the situation he was in at the end, and he put Curly in the cryopod just so if once someone finds him and maybe the ship, they find that the only survivor that wasn't killed by someone else's hand saved the Captain, and the narrative around him can still be "positive". Ugh I think Jimmy might be one of the most despicable video game characters ever. And I agree with Beam when they say Jimmy looks fine on the outside...Abusers and bad people are rarely greasy disgusting people like we imagine or like fiction depicts.
@@kararakun What makes Jimmy so particularly horrifying, at least to me, is how *mundane* he is. A man who has been down on his luck in the past, made some mistakes, but is getting a second chance through a new job and the support of a friend (Curly) but is sadly smacked around the head again with more bad luck when he loses his job. Its so average, and normal, and sad, but in a way that is so bland and common that we have seen it all before. And that lulls us into a false sense of security. We think Jimmy must be a decent man with bad luck because we've all met people like that before, good people who were dealt a rough hand in life, and so we want him to succeed. And its that exact fact that allows the game to gaslight us into thinking Jimmy is good, gaslight us the exact same way Jimmy gaslights everyone around him. His life has probably been hard because he's a narcissistic abuser who only cares about himself, and his terrible treatment of others has continually led to his destruction. But he's charming, and so he chooses well meaning if naive and overly forgiving people (like Curly) to latch onto. Then he convinces them he's just going through a tough time and not a bad person. And that's the true horror of it. He's an irredeemable monster from the very beginning, but he's a realistic monster. He's not some ghost hiding in the shadows or some beast prepared to tear you limb from limb, he's an abuser, one who lies to you and isolates you and tells you everything is normal and he's the only one who knows best so you don't know what to believe, all so he can have the control he so desperately craves. Then when that control is ripped away from him, he takes everyone else down with him rather than take responsibility.
honestly i didn't even think of this until you brought it up, but it makes sense. and with his "struggles back on earth", curly nepotism-ing jimmy into co-pilot position because he couldn't get a job under normal circumstances, and jimmy's dialogue when telling daisuke about the cocktail plan ("it's like he won't even know we did it"), along with hearing people say that jimmy had a criminal record before pony express (i haven't confirmed this, but i've hesrd it said and i don't wanna spread any misinfo), i think he may have "struggled" due to having a record of roofie-ing women beforehand. he may have chosen specifically to assault anya because he knew how difficult it would be for curly to get another job opportunity with an assault under his command. just one more envious jab at curly, at the cost of a woman's autonomy and wellbeing. this man imbues within me a rage unmatched by any horror game antagonist to date 💀
@@hwlo7891 I love this idea. It also adds to why he wouldn't feel sympathetic during his "sorry" speech in his head. Of course he wouldn't feel too strongly for something he's grown numb to. He literally had not a singular line about anya's death after she took her life yet had something to say looking at Daisuke's blood, which translated into the bizarro sections where it mainly was surrounded by the men of the crew aka the people Jimmy directly murdered. Even more disturbingly I think Jimmy see's anya's death as blood that isn't on his hands because of the way she died. I commend the devs for making a sick and demented character, and to this comment section, reading these theories on pure evil is amazing
the thing that makes Curly's condition even more awful is that at 53:02, the pain killers are 500 mgs of paracetamol. That's just a fucking Tylenol for being in unimaginable pain.
LITERALLY. I used to take oxycodone and I was like " yeah if they gave him more than just one 10mg pill his pain would defo not be as bad." but tylenol wont even help my fucking headache so i was flabbergasted that those were the "Painkillers" they went for to shut him up.
The distinction is not between a highly educated writer at a AAA development studio vs a 22 year old who knows a bit of C#, it's the difference between design by committee and sole proprietorship.
@@BeamBuddyy For context it is implied that Jim is an exconvict and Curly gave Jim a chance at a job. Possibly knowing Jim for years before Jail and thought Jim had redeemed himself after working with him for years. Then one day randomly Jim relapses and SA's Anya for some reason. The canon then goes from there. At the end when Jim talks to Pollie he calls you old man because Jim sees Anya and his kid as a Horse. Apparently the horse is near the dorms and Jim would have had to pass the Horse to get to Anya's room. The horse speaking to Jim as he passed it. Jim thus mentally links pleasure and Anya with the horse.
The voice acting in this is incredible - the Swansea monologue section in particular was fantastically done, probably my favourite part of this. Really well done all round, unbelievable quality.
2:01:41 the tonal whiplash of that song being used for the end credits had me rolling on the floor; this was one of your best videos yet, and I give a massive kudos to the Actors for their performances; the editing was superb and had the quality you'd see in a youtuber 10X the size, I can't wait to see what's next
I love that scene where Curly is heading towards the cockpit to evaluate Jimmy. He must descend to get to Jimmy's level, deeper and deeper, to the point he hits the very bottom. Warning signs- red flags- scream at him as he gets closer to Jimmy. Ladders spike out of the ground to give him a chance back out. But, with some effort, he blots out all the alarms about Jimmy, and pushes past all of it. He pushes past everything he knows about the danger of Jimmy's person.
It's insane how good you are at this bro. Discovered you this week and I really need to tell you your style, pacing, editing is top notch. Absolute mad lad!
it’s so crazy to see how this game blew up. i remember manly playing the demo and that was all i heard until the game came out and EVERYONE is talking about it.
I think another small theme that I really loved that no one really talks about is the continuous "Your worst day doesn't make you a bad person" rhetoric. Not only examining that phrase overall, but juxtaposing it with the opposite- doing one good deed doesn't make you a good person, either. Despite Jimmy being convinced he's redeemed himself, the point is that there is no such thing as redemption. You don't do a good thing to make up for fifty bad things- and Jimmy didn't even do a good thing. He put someone who is now going to suffer for 20 years before likely still dying into a cryochamber.
Man, Jimmy is such a monster. Is like when he cuts some of Curly's leg for "Their" survival. He couldn't even damage himself for that, nor someone already dead. He don't stop justifying his terrible actions again and again.
@theoldmanofthemountain7514 Jimmy is a real evil, that's what I love about the game. Very rarely do I see a villain in any media that is so realistic. The one thing I don't think is much covered either is Curly's guilt in all this, which this video covers lightly. So a crew woman is full on raped and when Curly finds out, what does he do? He tries to cover for his friend. He is going to "talk to him". There's a real evil in that. Nobody seems to take the nurse's rape with any amount of seriousness whatsoever. Another realistic sort of dynamic. The kinds of people who aid evil are often exactly like Curly. Complicit, non confrontational, nepotists.
@@knightartorias1825i mean, you are on a ship 8 months before reaching your destination, what are you going to do, there is no locks, there is only a gun... and that would be probably worse
Incredible video as usual BeamBuddy ;) You should really check out Hotline Miami and it’s sequel, they’re some of my favorite games along with Mouthwashing and Darkwood 🖤
I feel like that fish at the end does have more than one connection to Swansea. 1. Reference to shiny: Tool, Reference to cake: 2. Swansea's favorite cake he looks forward to every year. 3. Pride of being the biggest: Swansea's dialogue indicating that all the others are not experienced enough, and that hes earned the right to be grumpy because he put in the work. 4. Size of fish: Swansea is a husky lad 5. "Don't you touch nothing": Swansea's guarding of the utility room. I think it's important to note that this is likely a projection of how Jimmy views Swansea. I think this because of the way he is greeding over the cake, keeping it all to himself, drawing similarity to how Jimmy thought Swansea was keeping the chamber all to himself. In reality its being saved for Daisuke.
Great video. Never seen anyone bring reference to How Fish is Made in context of Curly and his psyche in all this, thinking on his 'joke', i wonder if he was deaf through the whole ordeal and just silently had to watch as every now and again one of the crew would enter the medbay looking progressively worse. Also I think Anya is bit undervalued in most retellings, shes clearly a good medic but not mentally strong enough to wall off her own emotions during these moments. I think she could never give Curly his pills wad because after her assualt by Jimmy, she couldnt bear to take someones autonomy away like he took hers.
Yea he also says he used to hate the constant noise but he cant sleep with out it. You might think he means he cant hear anything in the cryo pod but i he was deaf from the explosion piercing his eardrums or something, we also never do see him asleep in the game not saying thats a confirmation
In the introductions, I misheard "clueless intern" as "coolest intern," and I was like, yeah, he IS the coolest intern. I had no idea these were the same devs who created How Fish is Made, that game was gross as hell. This one is also gross as hell but in a completely different way. Wonderful work by you and all of the voice cast!
I love Swansea he had the most amazing dialogue and took no prisoners lol nice job voicing Jimmy too I didn’t even realize until half way thru and thought you sounded similar at points. Also that weird katamari clone about a fish amalgamation looked incredible I’m gonna have to keep an eye on that developer.
As someone who loves games that explore the depths of psychological horror, Mouthwashing ranks at the top of the genre for me, alongside Signalis and Omori. A beautiful gem that I didn't know I needed.
This guy is new to RUclips as far as I know, only have a handful of videos so far, but every single one of them has been banger after banger! These long-form videos might not be for everyone, but they certainly are for me. Very well edited, entertaining enough and just overall high quality. Please keep this up, I will wait for each video with excitement.
That intro cinematic is absolutely breathe-taking. This game has such an amazing sense of dread. Another banger video, bro really hit the scene running
In the Bizzarro 5 section, the fleshy mass you find, I don't think it grows eyes and a *mouth*, I believe that is a much more feminine opening. That, the ultrasounds, the monstrous baby crying and hunting Jimmy down, it's supposed to be representative (I think) of the pregnancy that resulted from Jimmy's assault of Anja. Her becoming pregnant meant there would be irrefutable.evidance of what he had done, and the pregnancy would be impossible to terminate without killing her out here in space, so this was the worst case scenario for both Anja and Jimmy. Anja because... The horrific trauma and invasion of her body, stretching into a nine months long nightmare that was going to lead to her giving birth in space with almost no help, and quite possibly dying, obviously. And for Jimmy, that baby being born, her swelling belly, would lead to blatant questions he wouldn't be able to ignore or dismiss.
Blows my mind people watch one of these videos and doesn't subscribe immediately afterwards, been here since Darkwood BB you're doing an incredible job.
If curly was not only burned and degloved, and it’s implied his bandages were wet when he was put in cryopod. He must have went through some excruciating & agonizing flash freezing burns and pain.
I’ve been here since your Darkwood video was a week or two old and you just keep getting better and better. I love getting the Discord notification and being able to watch more peak RUclips essays.
1:25:50 - There is a particular thing that Curly could have addressed but did not. Namely, Jimmy's actions. No, you shouldn't be supporting a friend doing what Jimmy did to Anya. Trying to cover up for friends in such situations is monstrous.
Yep. I don't think Curly is truly evil or anything, but he did terrible in terms of acknowledging the hurt that his friend did. Still, I do think his situation was complicated enough that he deserves a little bit of mercy. There's a good chance in my mind that Curly just didn't want to allow it to be an issue at all, no matter how justified it was to punish Jimmy, because Pony Express punishes bad behavior on a whole-group basis. Jimmy's personal wrongdoing had a serious chance of costing the *entire team* their pay, including Anya (who has no savings or anything to fall back on to support her and her growing kid,) as well as likely losing Curly his job. He was sort of trapped between a choice of "Punish my friend for being a rapist but lose our paychecks at the same time as we get fired from our jobs" or "Keep the incident quiet so that we don't lose our paychecks but force my friend to keep working alongside her rapist as a coworker for 8 months + hope the justice system handles it later." There was no path forward without things getting *really* messy for more people than just Jimmy alone, and Jimmy was able to perfectly manipulate that anxiety by mentioning how what he did will reflect onto Curly too. Curly's sin in my eyes is the same sin that Jimmy fell into the delusions of by the end of everything, where he believed he could salvage the unsalvageable and refused to acknowledge reality for what it was so that he could do the right thing. Honestly, I think Curly's kindly nature and Jimmy's status as his best friend caused Curly to overlook the more reasonable option of having used the gun to kill Jimmy. Pony Express may work on a "group punishment" basis, but the captain is also authorized by P.E. to use the revolver in case of a mutiny. And I know that if I were the captain, I had a gun, and I were sharing a ship with a rapist... I wouldn't be too hesitant to use it. There are more difficult things to explain lol
@@KonoGufoYea but you have to see how all of that happened like very shortly before the crash see the day of the the crash he talks to anya then he goes to jimmy. Here he is being to supportive of jimmy trying to tell him its all gonna be okay like bro he just raped someone wtf . So i agree with with you there, but u gotta take it from his perspective a lot of the game shows how responsibility can fuck u up into making worse decisions because when you are responsible you stand to have the most to lose if it all goes bad, thats why jimmy played curly and said what “will everyone think when we get back, you are the captain you are responsible for the ship and the crew.” Then jimmy crashes the ship tells everyone it was curly and in the ultimate irony jimmy is now responsible for the ship and everyone, who he kills. This game is like the ultimate irony for jimmy
@@KonoGufoBut what i mean to say is that all of it happening so quick is what fucked curly and his feeling of responsibility for everyone is what made him make these bad choices so while i agree he should have shot jimmy. I dont think its realistic that he would have because directly after anya tells him shes pregnant he crashes the ship and i think thats another reason he crashed it he was afraid the people on the shit would all learn i think thats why swaunsee is talking to anya privately but i could be mistaken. Dont take my comment as rude this is just my interpretation not tryna ruin ur pov 🤝🏽
They were going to be stuck on a ship together for 8 more months, realistically there was no other choise than to make amends with what has happened. Curly was thrown in to an impossible situation, forced to take responsibility from someone elses horrible actions, and he ended up suffering the most. Not to take away Anyas suffering or anything, but i think Curly mirrors somewhat our current social expectations about sexual assault and other societal issues. The pressure to take responsibilty for awful things that you did not even do yourself is always present, and no matter how you deal with it you are forced to suffer with them. I find it a bit sad that people don't have sympathy for Curly.
@@olvicola 'realistically there was no other choise than to make amends with what has happened' If you exclude the option of dealing with Jimmy like with a sussy impostor, you can at least restrain him and/or freeze him. 'forced to take responsibility from someone elses horrible actions' I.e. something that a person with authority - like a ship's captain - is supposed to do. 'The pressure to take responsibilty for awful things that you did not even do yourself' You mean 'take responsibility' in the sense of taking the blame or 'take responsibility' in the sense of doing your job and not patting the perpetrators on the back?
3 things to say: 1- I thought this was a 2 hour long essay about literal mouthwashing with a weird thumbnail and I was ready for it, RUclips is weird. 2 - the moment you mentioned "last time a game made me feel a real emotion" I thought about To the moon, felt great when you mentioned it. 3- for those looking for more emotional heavy hitters try House of fata Morgana, the gameplay (or lack thereof) is not for everyone, but the writing is top notch
literally found your channel yesterday and binged all your content. woke up to this today about one of my favorite games ever. love your videos!!!! edit: okay i watched 10 minutes and this has to be one of the best produced video essays i've ever seen. the 3D models, the voices, the effects, everything. amazingly done. i feel like im supposed to pay to watch this
My buddy recommended this channel, and my God it didn't disappoint, a full dub is completely amazing. I didn't realize until the end that it wasn't dubbed lol. I like the depth, great video. Also I choose down (Purposeful death or something)
Again an Incredible Video Essay, I first saw you a couple months ago with Soma and i was so eager to watch more of your videos to be suprised there werent any. You do gods work out here and i just know if you keep it up youll easily reach the 1 Million Subscribers next year. Cant wait for the next Video
As an aspiring writer let me say that an understated benefit of watching this dude's videos is that one gets to really dissect what makes a story impactful. It is one thing to give a blow by blow recital of a narrative and it's events, it takes a special kind of presenter to make the story breathe with life and hit with the same impact the creator intended. From this video, I've gleaned insight on how it's a useful trick to play with perspective and framing, the story of this game begins with Curly being framed as an otherwise good captain who had a catastrophic switch into villainy... The result being when you follow the segments where you play as Curly you're anticipating the switch from what appears to be a stand-up guy into some devious person: of course the bait and switch is that it is Jimmy who turns out to have been the absolute monster, and it leaves you reflecting on the seeds of bemused relatability that had been growing for him until the cracks of his cowardice begin to show. First with his decision to gaslight the kid into the vent and with the insane spiral of revelations that follow. All this to say, continue with the good work, exposure to these unique and fascinating gems of storytelling helps even from an academic standpoint.
one of the greatest videos I've seen on one of the greatest stories I've experienced. top tier animation, commentary, voice acting, editing. thank you BeamBuddyy.
I'm still getting thru the video, but just wanted to say that I know a lot of work goes into these videos and I really appreciate your effort. You produce top notch content and are crazy underrated viewed and subscribed. Please keep it up. I watched your whole SOMA video and will be watching this one too.
i’m loving this channel so much, it sucks that i have to wait so long for a new video but it’s always amzing when one comes out, i find myself rewatching them in the background because the storytelling is so good, please continue and i hope you’re doing well!!
Congrats on the wonderfull video! I have never been a one to enjoy horror, especially psicological horror but be it the storytelling in-game or your editing and analysis of the characters and their motives made it well worth the watch.
This is one of my favorite videos I've watched in my life. I wish i could forget what its about just to rewatch it. I cant imagine the amount of effort that you put into this keep up the work. (Im surprised you only have 170K that is some bs should easily have 1m+)
I have RUclips thumbnails blocked and saw a 2-hour video called "MOUTHWASHING", I thought I would learn about dental hygiene for 2hrs, and instead I got an amazing in depth video essay about a game I am severely disappointed
The level of psychological f'ry this and the Soma video have done is insane. These videos are always super high quality and can be rather disturbing. Love them tho, keep up the truly fantastic work!
Now that I have seen all of this, damn. This makes me shiver. I can imagine myself as every single person and in every single scenario and it is hard to say that I could be better. It is hard to believe that I would do better. This game did an amazing job at showing the fine line of choice and predestination, and if it was predestination, then by all means, none of us could do better. This is a video I will come back to and watch again, half because I am to whimpy to go and play it myself and on the other hand just because seeing over playing allows for more self reflection. That being said this video was fantastic, not only because of the amazing game but your level of depth as always is extraordinary! Keep up the amazing content ❤️
I dont know if you take suggestions, but i would love to see you cover The Evil Within series, specifically the 2nd game. I'll rewatch a lets play of it every couple of years or so, and there are some incredibly emotional moments.
The simple answer to "Why do indie games have (seemingly) better compelling stories compared to the mainstream" is precisely because of the mainstream (and what indie titles benefit from). Indie games either ignore the idea of an audience, or they answer directly to the audience. Mainstream studios have to run off of speculation while answering to those who pay the bills, those who have hired them, while also taking note of what a study group might forward. There's no depth to this topic because this specific answer has existed for many years in broad daylight.
i watched this video just wanting entertainment. thinking about james, his actions, judging him, how he had done things the wrong way and blaming him for everything. overall, thinking about the lore, made me realize his actions were justified in his perspective, even though he had the wrong mindset. i suddenly started to compare him with myself. my life choices, my struggles, and thinking, I'm blaming others for my failures as well. always finding a way to make myself come out as innocent guy with bad luck. i realized i must take responsibility to not make my actions hurt the ones surrounding me. I'm really glad i watched this and came to this conclusion. thanks man i wish you the best
OMG one of my new favourite youtubers makes a video to the game Im having a hyperfixation on!! Seriously, amazing video again, i love how you matched your personas animation to the mouthwashing playstyle/graphics. Amazing content once again
Man, what a fucking video, this is a crazy well made game and a crazy well put together video. Huge kudos to the voice actors, this was amazing and so were they
The pure quality of this video is insane. I discovered your channel when I saw the soma video, and to say the work is commendable is an understatement. This work is a goddamn masterpiece. It really captures the impact of the game, and the cinematography is stunning. Also, dancing beam and ocean man at the end killed me lol. Keep up the phenomenal work Beam!
I think Wake Rock is what Swansea names the asteroid they crashed into. The Tulpar must have fused with it, maybe some of the foam that got ejected from the ship to seal the breaches stuck to the asteroid on impact and ship and rock got glued together.
I think that in a way, every character here is the villain of their own story; the whole incident just a web of personal character flaws amalgamating into an incident greater than the scale of its individual parts. -the captain has made two mistakes throughout the travel: he failed to take in consideration the mental health of the medic, which could have brought to light the first mate's assault much earlier, and he brought up the subject of the company's collapse way too soon, which created that environment that precipitated the mental slippage of the crew. If he had talked to the medic sooner or had held his tongue about the company closing until the end of the trip, as was recommended, things could have ended better. -I don't think i need to explain the sins of the first mate. Cowardly, manipulative, unstable, he is the match that blew up the powder keg. Even when his actions had consequences, during the crash, he learned nothing and kept on going through his usual actions. He "f*cked up", and in a way the entire incident became his reckoning. -The medic is the victim of this case, and although this shouldn't be taken as victim blaming, it should be noted that things would've been very different if she had talked about what the first mate did at any point, or if she had not taken the pills. Her death is what kicked the others past the moral event horizon, as albeit she was the original victim of the entire incident, she was also the one keeping the crew together as a medic, even if she was clearly out of her depth, as her incapacity to give the painkillers to the captain seems to indicate. -The engineer's problem lies, like everyone else here, in communicating. By belittling the intern even after the incident and keeping silent about the cryogenic pod, he created a situation where the intern could easily be manipulated by the first mate. Being the one that started the prospect of drinking mouthwash probably didn't help either. The situation became uncontrollable once he became permanently drunk. -and finally, the intern, who blindly searched for recognition, and got easily manipulated by the first mate. An unexpected late addition to the crew, his naivety and overall childish behavior betrayed a wish to be recognized as someone with a future. And yet, much like the game pretty much always puts him in a separate category, i'm having trouble recognizing him as one of the crew, as part of the incident. Befitting his state as an intern, he was an outsider, simply caught within the crossfire. A true victim, who could not have done anything better with the cards he was dealt. If only he was more wary of people promising him recognition, he could have recognized the first mate's manipulative behavior... but in the end that's just who he is, a young man with his head filled with stars. And finally, i think we should talk about the crew as a whole, minus the captain and the intern. During the cake scene, their grievances take form as pure, unadulterated envy: "why are you not falling from grace like the rest of us?". The envy in this scene makes it extremely unpleasant to watch, because it's a mirror put to your face: *you, the player*, are envious of people who get to keep on living their life, who hold high positions on the corporate ladder. The crew, both individuals and as a whole, are flawed, but in the end, the incident as a whole was greater than the sum of its part. "Take responsibility", here, can be read as more than a mark of the first mate's guilt eating him, but a message to the player: that you should not do like the characters here, who blame those who have it better than them even though they are also suffering from the same event, and could take action to prevent it from becoming worse.

One thing that still gets me is how the silence lingers just uncomfortably long enough to make us worry after Jimmy kills himself, because he doesn't even make sure the pod turns on properly before doing it.
Like could you even imagine???
If that happened, I feel this would be the most depressing game of 2024
Furthermore when Jimmy is having his out of body experience curly is sitting and on fire. He was sitting in the cryo-pod too so I actually think curly was burned alive.
Given the state that Curly is in, I think the cryo pod not activating and him dying is more merciful…
"Shut up Jimmy, just let me burn out this time."
Lol
Curly isn't *only* burned, he's also been skinned due to the crew having to pull him out of the foam. He got cooked and degloved.
He lowkey built like gilver from the dmc novel-
I kid, of course. I could see how that may have been the case when the video talked about feeding curly the painkillers.
If the crew survived then Anya would 100% get into medical school. She managed to keep curly alive for 4 months straight with little to no medical supplies whatsoever.
This guy basically needs Adam Smasher level cybernetic augmentation to live again lol.
However... they can decide if they go

Or you weren’t paying attention? the horse is supposed to represent her and that’s why the moon screen she loved was behind it but it’s because if you remember him talking about having dirty thoughts about the horse it’s him confronting Anya because all he saw her as was “sex”

And when you realize she couldn't give the painkillers because she got nausea not because she was a bad nurse, but because she was pregnant...
Hold on, I didn't even notice that the characters are not voiced in the game and are dubbed. They did a really good job, especially Anya and Daisuke.

Amazing work on the voice, really solidified the personality
You know what's even worse about Jimmy assaulting Anya? IMO:
The action in and of itself is already irredeemable.
I wonder if Jimmy said I hope this hurts to Anya when he assaulted her

the thing that makes Curly's condition even more awful is that at 53:02, the pain killers are 500 mgs of paracetamol.

For context it is implied that Jim is an exconvict and Curly gave Jim a chance at a job.

Curly believed in his friend and didn't see the dead pixel until it was far too late.
It's insane how good you are at this bro. Discovered you this week and I really need to tell you your style, pacing, editing is top notch. Absolute mad lad!

That's who I watched play the game too lol
it’s so crazy to see how this game blew up. i remember manly playing the demo and that was all i heard until the game came out and EVERYONE is talking about it.

Imagine being so traumatized by having bad breath you make a whole video game about it.
I feel like that fish at the end does have more than one connection to Swansea.
1. Reference to shiny: Tool, Reference to cake:
2. Swansea's favorite cake he looks forward to every year.
3. Pride of being the biggest: Swansea's dialogue indicating that all the others are not experienced enough, and that hes earned the right to be grumpy because he put in the work.
4. Size of fish: Swansea is a husky lad
Yeah I agree, when he said it was curly that made no sense to me at all
Great video.
I kind of got that vibe too in a way. the pill scenes seemed almost SA like.
Yea he also says he used to hate the constant noise but he cant sleep with out it. You might think he means he cant hear anything in the cryo pod but i he was deaf from the explosion piercing his eardrums or something, we also never do see him asleep in the game not saying thats a confirmation

'realistically there was no other choise than to make amends with what has happened'
If you exclude the option of dealing with Jimmy like with a sussy impostor, you can at least restrain him and/or freeze him.
'forced to take responsibility from someone elses horrible actions'
I.e. something that a person with authority - like a ship's captain - is supposed to do.
'The pressure to take responsibilty for awful things that you did not even do yourself'
You mean 'take responsibility' in the sense of taking the blame or 'take responsibility' in the sense of doing your job and not patting the perpetrators on the back?

Wait this is not in-game voice acting???

You produce top notch content and are crazy underrated viewed and subscribed. Please keep it up. I watched your whole SOMA video and will be watching this one too.
i’m loving this channel so much, it sucks that i have to wait so long for a new video but it’s always amzing when one comes out, i find myself rewatching them in the background because the storytelling is so good, please continue and i hope you’re doing well!!
Your videos always make my day, the quality and topics you cover are just beautiful and so well made. Have an amazing thanksgiving Beam Buddy!!!
AMAZING video man. i can tell you put so much into this and it payed off, best video ive seen on this game yet.
love the new visuals at the beginning of the video, makes it feel more like i'm watching a fully formed documentary than a youtube video!
Congrats on the wonderfull video! I have never been a one to enjoy horror, especially psicological horror but be it the storytelling in-game or your editing and analysis of the characters and their motives made it well worth the watch.
Whoever voiced Jimmy sounds like fucking Keanu Reeves, and I can't get over it.
Definitely sounds like Keanu
Maybe if we can Keanu to see this game he'll reach out to the creators to make a movie. I mean, it's got the right pacing to be one.
This is one of my favorite videos I've watched in my life. I wish i could forget what its about just to rewatch it. I cant imagine the amount of effort that you put into this keep up the work. (Im surprised you only have 170K that is some bs should easily have 1m+)
I have RUclips thumbnails blocked and saw a 2-hour video called "MOUTHWASHING", I thought I would learn about dental hygiene for 2hrs, and instead I got an amazing in depth video essay about a game
I am severely disappointed
great video !!!!!1 I love you beam buddie!!!!
You gave me such a great early christmas gift. S Tier creator.
The voice casts here ARE SO FREAKING GOOD!!! I'd pay extra for a steam workshop mod that individually voices over the game's entire script!!
I dont know if you take suggestions, but i would love to see you cover The Evil Within series, specifically the 2nd game. I'll rewatch a lets play of it every couple of years or so, and there are some incredibly emotional moments.
This is my new favorite channel, every video has me glued from start to finish. Brings me on an emotional rollercoaster
I'm really glad i watched this and came to this conclusion. thanks man
i wish you the best
Bro out of nowhere uploads 😂 and im very grateful for it, im gonna enjoy this vid sooo muuch.
Huge kudos to the voice actors, this was amazing and so were they
This channel has been exactly what I've needed from video game essays, Love every minute of every video. Keep up the awesome work
2:01:50 ocean man 🎼
The pure quality of this video is insane.
Hearing those swampy drums of Ocean Man in the outro made me smile... but in a way fitting to the video and the outro visuals along with it
Literally what happened to me aswell.
He's a genius.
Everyone in these comments has such good taste
@@dyamicorriveau9677 tank yoi :D
His videos really deserves much recognition . The story is well said and his story telling skills are way better than many other youtubers.
I think Wake Rock is what Swansea names the asteroid they crashed into. The Tulpar must have fused with it, maybe some of the foam that got ejected from the ship to seal the breaches stuck to the asteroid on impact and ship and rock got glued together.
I also wonder whether the ship is crashed on the asteroid or floating in space, is rescue even possible...
@BeamBuddy
great videos and explanations . 49:53 ‘jimbo’ ‘the man with the plan’ ‘looking to pull the plug early’
"Take responsibility", here, can be read as more than a mark of the first mate's guilt eating him, but a message to the player: that you should not do like the characters here, who blame those who have it better than them even though they are also suffering from the same event, and could take action to prevent it from becoming worse.
your animations and your presentation is so good, I hope this channel explodes in views. Awesome quality
