Well, I can actually imagine that a huge part of the yaoi subcontext is made up by the yaoi fans, so this series is not completely gay. :D I can also tell you what makes this show worth watching for everyone - it is very well drawn (KyoAni´s style is incredible), it is very relaxing (there is not much drama and the plot is mostly sunshines and puppies), the characters are really lovable and funny to watch. So you should try it out! ;)
well yeah there's some boylove hinted but you can think it as bromance and honestly if you are interested in swimming, this show doesn't leave it in the background but it's actually the whole thing in the show.
