I think all these ideas are great with the exception of popcorn. I recall watching a warning in training about giving the elderly popcorn because of chocking risk. Isn't it greater for those with dementia? Thoughts?

😍 'Seeing is believing' I just bought dad one of those books you recommend where he can just add water & the colours come through, then dry away to reuse (English spelling of colour, you touch the world, we are in England). In case he thought it is childish I said it is a gift for 'that little boy' he hallucinates (I believe the little boy is kinda dad & expresses if he is happy or wants help & dad used to play with toys supposedly for my brother every night in the run up to Christmas 😁) we all loved this painting book. He's talking more now too. I've been looking for anything that replaces Parkinson's apathy with a happy interaction. I found you through your excellent videos on end stages so, sadly, I'm buying books at the same time on palliative care because I'm so worried about him but it just goes to show we mustn't give up on quality of life too & we can still find joy during the precious time we have with him. THANK you, you beautiful angel from a happy dad & daughter x

I’m thrilled he enjoys entertaining whomever the little boy is…himself or an imaginary friend!! We think nothing of children having imaginary friends, do we? Sometimes I wonder if pleasant hallucinations are simply that! All my love from the Southeast USA!

@@DementiaWithGrace That's another good point! Apparently my imaginary friend was called Gloria & dad used to lift her up onto a bench to sit next to me 😁 many times I smile to myself because I am helping him in a way that he used to help me & you helped me find another example & I find it really motivating & comforting, thank you!

I just found your beautiful videos, THANK you x
I found dad would worry if we reminisced about parents so I use places instead. We go on street view websites for his childhood homes then look at local history sites to top up our knowledge of the place. We'd seen a park where he used to play & it helped us recognise when we got some photos developed from old negatives that 1 was a photo of his dad playing with him there. One book said to focus on a favourite topic of conversation so we chose London & bought games focused round there &, you are so right, old TV shows based there give him a real boost. We researched the family tree so I'd bring him a post card of a London landmark & tell him a family story from there. We made a lever arch file full of pictures of the places or ships or military history. Sometimes he doesn't seem so interested then he'll suddenly ask what else I've found out!
A good card game is Uno because it is like snap but he only has to match a primary colour or simple number
That book also says to learn from the expert, the person with dementia. I said to my brother that dad rarely exercised or had hobbies & we're inviting him to exercise or walk when he's sitting & he says no yet we're stopping him when he does do something. We need to reverse our response. Dad was picking out things stored to the left of his chair & I was putting them back asking him not to & apologising I needed to store them there. Then I realised that is actually good exercise bending, turning, weight bearing. Now I put brightly coloured things there so he can see them better, I act delighted, thank him for sorting that out & he says
    "Anything for you" 😍
I saw advice to sit next to the person, appear to be taking a great interest. I can just about convince him to sort puzzle piece colours of a red plane in a bright blue sky pretending it's for me because he thinks puzzles are a waste of time but it gets him to interact & he thinks he's kindly encouraging me, so I think that's a win ☺ So I take anything I need to do to him & think out loud & he does smile & even sometimes tries to tell people about it
He used to be amazing at wood work so we have some left over from a building project do I get him to "help me make things" even just giving him a safe tool for "his end" of a piece of wood & tell people "dad & I are making a bird table like the 1 he made us when we were little". Yes, I'm not so skilled but it's fun
+ we are making a fidget cushion based round WWII planes that he loves just out of a pillow case, camouflage socks & bits & bobs
I truly believe your positive approach is right. I've realised my dread & grief are spoiling precious time with him & I should focus as much as possible on NOW. Even though I'm scared it's getting into later stages it's still precious time with this wonderful man & if we can raise a smile or reaction it's a valuable connection
You are a gift from God doing the work of angels, truly ❤

Have zero budget. Very little supplies. Non mobile some non verbal residents in assistant living. Mo'st won't do morning exercise. Crafts and card games are not well liked trivia has to be extremely easy.
Currently been begging for a bag of balloons. Stopped spending my own money.
