  • Here is our survey and seatrial video for the Lagoon 410 that we bought. The idea was to document the process we went through to help give an idea what it can be like for others interested in buying a boat. We're a little behind on our video editing but are just starting to catch up. :)

    On ALL surveys it is best to go with the surveyor and they will point out and explain things to you and answer your questions as you learn about the boat. Every surveyor I ever had welcomes the buyers to go with them. Very important tip!

    Congratulations guys. When you are starting out it's fun to have a boat that you can work on yourself. Some work, then some sailing, some more work and then more sailing, it will be fun! Our first cat needed a fair amount of work and we spend every holiday and every weekend on it, enjoying every moment.

    Been following for quite some time, haven't commented of late...you guys didn't seem that thrilled in the video....two great days of owning a boat owning a boat, the first day of purchase, and, the day of sale...did a quick search, found two 41's in Houston....
    Take your time.....

    I sailed across the Pacific Ocean in 2014 on a Lagoon 410 from Panama to Indonesia over 5 months. The 410 is a fantastic boat, congratulations on your purchase. There is plenty of room onboard, she sails consistently fast (5-8 Knots) and is incredibly stable at anchor. That said, there are a few dangerous problems and issues on the 410 you need to be aware of, most of these may have been missed by the survey as they are not obvious and I can attest to them first hand. If you plan to go on long ocean crossings or blue water sailing far from help check the following list. Firstly, the generator in the front right cabin under the mattress needs to be serviced and all the wiring checked. Our generator caught on fire from a wiring fault 500 NM from land midway on the crossing from Galapagos to French Polynesia. That turned into a very very dangerous situation for us, as our desalinator no longer worked for fresh water and we had no AC power to power electronics as our inverter failed as well. Next, be aware that the sail drives are a point of weakness and may have been damaged in the past and need to be checked. This is hard to do as they are enclosed under the boat and it needs to be hauled out. Both our sail drives broke at different times from pieces of drifting rope getting caught up and tangled in the propellors and breaking the gears in the sail drives. Repairs were done in French Polynesia but one of them failed again as there is just not readily available parts in remote areas. It is really tough to get into harbors and Atols without working propellors due to broken sail drives... Lastly and most importantly, there is a hull weakness in the fiberglass just underneath the waterline at the stern. level with the waterline marker on the inside of the two hulls, underneath the stern outside platform (its tough to describe online). Our hull was torn by a big wave and we started taking on water somewhere between Fiji and the Cook Islands. We very nearly lost the boat and our lives as a result. We later beached to the boat and made emergency repairs to the hull with fiberglass we had onboard. Having said all that I would sail on a 410 again, and I still think they are fantastic boats. Just like all boats, there are a couple of things to check and some weak spots. Enjoy the Boat and safe sailing! if you want or need anymore information just message me and I'll be happy to help.

      ok. thanks for the info. Our generator is in the locker adjacent to the windlass /chain locker but I hear you on getting the wiring checked out. That's definitely on our todo list. Before we do any "real" cruising we're going to replace our thruhulls as they are original to the boat (17yrs old) when we do we'll make sure to service the sail drives as best we can. With regard to that fiberglass issue, is that a known/documented thing? Just wondering if there is a site out there discussing it and peoples fixes for it.

    • @forestjack4933
      @forestjack4933 6 лет назад +3

      Jessica and Ryan Adventures
      Your generator may be aftermarket which is good, the old stock ones were huge, heavy and prone to wiring problems. I can't find much online about other 410s having fibreglass issues but I can attest to it first hand. When you lay down in the rear beds with you feet pressed against the hull facing inwards you can feel the hull flexing in big waves. That is where it is weakest. Sometimes my feet were flung off the hull in the middle of the night from the impact of waves bouncing off the inside of the hull. That repetitive force can weaken the fiberglass over time. Keep some rolls of fiberglass and resin onboard so you can make repairs and some strong water proof adhesive so you can patch any problems in an emergency. You'll likely never have to use it but it saved our boat. We literally had to plug the tear in the fiberglass with a plastic table mat with Heavey duty adhesive from the outside of the hull, as the water pressure kept pushing away anything we tried to plug to hole with. Later we beached the boat on a beach (which is another great advantage of a Cat) sanded back the problem areas and strengthened the hull. You guys are going to have a ball out there, congrats on an amazing boat

    Had a survey done on a 410 and the surveyor did basically nothing with the engines. The owner said the engines were fine. Being familiar with diesel engines myself I decided to bring in a mechanic for a lookover and a compression check. Even though the engines were running they were on their last leg and ready to blow, using a couple quarts of oil a day. Always bring in a certified mechanic to look at the engines.

    Thank you for sharing the "Survey" process. How does the boat look on the depreciation curve analysis? Your idea of a depreciation curve analysis is great, you get to see just the age of a boat where the resale price just flattens out, and does not go down that much after a certain point.

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  6 лет назад

      Yeah, pretty much as long as we maintain the boat, we should be able to sell it for what we got it for. But since we're doing the conversion and some updates we'll probably sell it for more than we bought it for. That said we wont make a profit on it. If we put 40k of improvements into it, we'll probably only get an extra 20k in value out of the boat.

      Very nice....when are we going to get an inside tour. Don't be embarrassed that it might be a little rough...part of making it your own is repairing cleaning and introducing your own personality in it. May of have bought less than perfect RV's and homes, and did the repairs ourselves. The work under progress makes VERY interesting footage and most likely you will get some professional advice about something you have a question about. Involve your viewers in the transformation...the public loves it and it may end up being a great advantage to you. It's a great way to form consistent viewers, as they love to see the progress...and even the "flubs" we all have made our share of them and it brings a great human element to your channel. You can learn from your public and they can learn from you. I am a new fan and I will stay tuned. Again.....congratulations it will be a lovely Cat.

    Hi, kudos, getting closer and closer to your dream. Would love to know what the budget is for the owners conversion. I'm a few years from getting our cat, and am aware many of the boats being made in the next few years will be "charter" versions due to the hurricanes etc Production slots will be limited for owners versions for a few years with the market demand. Possible exceptions with FP but then the price will be high. So I'm likely to have to do a conversion in a few years for liveaboard. Looking at Lagoon 42's in 6-7 years time.

    First off, I'm excited for you two. My wife and I are looking into getting a boat and can't wait to be on the verge of it! A couple of questions though. Have you had a survey done on another boat? Maybe I missed a video. I know it can be expensive to have surveys done so it's probably difficult to know when to get it done. Also, what do you consider "worn down"? The boat looked absolutely gorgeous to me, and it's a 2000, I can't imagine anything is worn down really except maybe a toilet and such?

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  6 лет назад

      Hey, this was our first survey, i think grand total we spent about $1.3k on it, not including the rental car, flights, or airbnb. For worn down, its nothing "major", a lot of the varnished wood needs revarnishing, the floor in the saloon needs to be replaced, it has some rotten spots in it where the fridge leaks. Also the hull needs to be buffed out and made shiny again. It's shineyness is kinda patchy looking but that really doesn't show on camera. Also, yeah toilets and sink fixtures are worn out, but that's not too big of a deal to replace.We'll document all of our fixing up to give a better idea on what a 2000 something boat needs done to it.

    • @natersthegamer1953
      @natersthegamer1953 6 лет назад

      Jessica and Ryan Adventures now was the 1.3k including the.. 4 survey tests? Initial survey, hauled out survey(with cost of haul out included), engine test and sail test?

    • @jandradventures
      @jandradventures  6 лет назад

      +NatersTheGamer those 4 parts were just sub components of the survey/seatrial. All in all there are two bills to pay for the entire survey/seatrial. The first is about 1k (for our boat) to the surveyor. And the second was about $350 paid to the haulout yard.

      We'll be making a video all about financing stuff in the next week or two. Ultimately we did use Essex, but we got denied by them our first time around. They're not the most personable, but they do lend money under the right conditions.

    Hey guys, did you have to put only 10% down and did the finance company require another source of collateral besides the boat value like your house? I've always wondered that as I have an excellent credit score and no Debt but I don't own my home and was wondering how the loan works. Are you guys sailing it back to Kemah? Or moving to Florida?

      We tried a couple of years ago to get a boat. We were naive and though also becuase our credit was good and had little debt they would be lining up to give us money. Ha! At the time we had been renting our inlaws house for the past 10 yrs so we also had no home as collateral.

      We'll be transient with regard to where we live, but we plan on doing our refit work for a couple of months somewhere in the Carolinas where it's cheaper. The financial side is tricky, there is a lot to talk about, but we'll be making a video on that in the next week or two sharing everything that we learned.

      It doesn't matter because they might have come across a good deal.. Just figure out what you can afford then go look at boats.. Then buy and sail.. Your only a couple steps away from it..

      Hey, no, different boat. Turns out there are a lot of boats named Freedom out there, part of the reason why we changed the name to Honu.

    Every good surveyor always welcomes you along on the survey so he can explain everything in person and answer any of your questions. The only other things I see is to remember, you will not get one cent more for the improvements you make when you sell her and hummm, my only other advice would be to sell her now or don't buy her and get a monohull IF you really want to sail AND safety is foremost to you. IF you are going to sit in a dock and only day sail on great weather days they hey, go for it. Remember, it's hard to do a radio mayday when your antenna and radio etc are all upside down in the ocean, in 25 foot seas in the dark of night, freezing etc... Think about safety foremost and as beginners, go for the safest thing t learn on... and be on in the ocean. A cork with a nail in the bottom monohull.
