  • Venice will soon start charging day-trippers to visit the popular tourist location during peak periods, as it tries to find ways to deal with over tourism, which strains the city’s infrastructure from visitors clogging up the city’s narrow streets and canals.
The city will begin collecting the fee, initially 5 euros ($7.30 Canadian) per day-tripper, as a 30-day pilot test during weekends in the spring and summer and during Italian national holidays.
In a statement, it said it hopes to “disincentivize” daily tourism during certain periods and improve quality of life for Venice’s dwindling number of full-time residents.
Rachel Dodds, tourism expert from Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), says such fees are something that could be adopted in other cities across Europe struggling with similar concerns.

It hurts residents more than tourists. They now have to constantly be ready to prove that they are not a tourist. And God forbid they don't have a smart phone, or they don't have it on them, or the battery is dead or dying or they are not tech savvy.
And what of people from near Venice who just want to come visit their family? What of people who live near Venice and need to come into Venice just to do some important errands? What of people or companies making deliveries into Venice or picking things up from Venice for delivery there or elsewhere? So now they have to charge the person they are making a delivery to a tourism tax, of who that person isn't even a tourist. And what of people who have to commute in and out of the city for work?
These are all things that are so obviously wrong with this, that the fact that ANYONE at all would support this to means they are extremely stupid or extremely evil. Which one are you?

My family and I, in Ayat Al-Shahrab, have 15,000 Yemenis among us, and now we owe 45,000 for 3 months, and the owner of the house is one of the people who will not have mercy. By God, my brother, everything will come. One day he insulted us and talked about us and wanted to leave the house and take him to the street because we could not pay him the rent. The neighbors saw us crying and came back to talk to the neighbors and gave us the end of the week. We paid him an oath, may God have mercy on him, he will take us out to the street and we will have mercy on him. Our country is because of this war, and we cannot find food for our day, and my sisters and I are living on a embassy. Our father is dead, may God have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who has been with us in these harsh circumstances. My little sisters went out to the street and saw the neighbors eating, and they stopped at their door to give them bread, even if they broke it, and by God who has the kingdom of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them. And they came back crying. They were dying of hunger. No one had mercy on them. I gave them a holiday. I would have made a living. Now blame one of us. Help us with a kilo of flour. I swear to God.
