+Winston Smith What is it with you people thinking forced wealth redistribution is some divine force that normal markets and charity can't compete with?
I went all over the internet looking to get my SOMA fix but I ended up coming back here. This is the best SOMA playthrough on the internet. Everyone else misses the important details that you get. It really builds the story.
Mauler's highlighting of your let's-play made me want to watch your perspective; You seem a lot more immersed and interested in the universe you're inheriting through Simon, I'm looking forward to this.
You are a very interesting commentator. I am impressed, your involved attitude of the game caught my attention and kept me interested throughout the whole video. I enjoy how you ask questions and yet you seem very smart as to a lot of the content. I subscribed, keep it up buddy!
same! This will be my first time watching the complete game and I wanted to choose a commentator that resonated with me; I found ChristopherOdd and now I'm sure I will enjoy this journey!
I love how thorough you are and how much you look into everything. i mean that, because there is so much the creators put into it, i feel you give it all proper attention. I also like your intro and the fact that you emphasis consciousness. This game has so many thought questions from my psychology textbook. it's such a great game, and im glad you got to play it. I'm subscribing to your channel btw :)
mookiemorjax I tried once....never again ! They should stay in the computer.I meant normal Potato Chips (or Crisps in the UK) but I think you know what I mean ^^
Even though it's a minor spoiler, I really hate it when subtitles reveal characters' names before they've introduced themselves (or before player has learned them some other way).
SOMA stories: staying up literally all night, solving 4 by 4 pipe puzzles, to break through the ARG, and I'm awarded with a free game key, best, thing ever.
I cannot thank you enough for your playthrough so far. I'm randomly revisiting this game bcs I love it and wanted to watch, but no other let's play has been immersed as much as you have. I truly appreciate that, I love this game so much and I wanna see the environment as much as the devs put work in it. I am too scared to play myself but this is awesome, so thank you so so much :)
I'm a few years late but I used to live in the M5T postal code area for about a year and a half. Simon Jarret and I might as well have been neighbours.
I appreciate the intro. It's something to make us think. Most viewers may not like it because all they want is entertainment. I'm new to your channel. I mostly like the narration of the game, due to my being an introvert and either always being too busy working or finishing school. Keep being awesome Christopher! (Bye)
Been waiting for this for a long time. Seeing ChristopherOdd in a balance between a logical explorer and a scared/cautious victim. Amnesia all over again yes.
Mark: dumb remarks, sex jokes, spoils half the plot in the first two episodes Chris: quiet, thoughtful, considerate, actually reads the fricking documents Subscribed.
If you're gonna drag Mark, his Soma playthrough isn't the one to do it for. He starts thay way but the game kind of forces him to take it seriously after a certain point
Honestly, that intro was amazing, IMO You are very good at story telling ya know that? I was captivated from the very first sentence up to your name and game title. People need to do it like this more often, keep up the good work man :)
Hey Christopher I just want to say, it's nice to find an LPer who isn't acting like a wound up freak (see Pewdiepie and some others). Thanks for this LP.
I don't know why I freaked out at the mention of Bloor St. and Spadina, but that was awesome lol. I guess it's just that there aren't exactly too many games/books/t.v shows that take place in Toronto and use the real street names, or at least, I don't know many of them.
I like how thorough and mature your gameplay is. You said you wanted your fingerprints on everything. I think you have certainly achieved that! ^^ One of the best commentary playthroughs of SOMA on youtube.
+Gameshark Gary I threw a bunch of things in the lobby for my first episode of my Let's Play. When I read the note for the door code, I thought it was 2507 instead of 2501, because it was connected to the zero. I spent 30 minutes in that stupid lobby before finally looking up the code. All because of bad handwriting.
That intro is exactly why I love Horror games, or SF in general. They post some question nobody have ever think about and give their own answer throughout the experience, which is by no means the true answer and leave the players more to explore on their own. And the topic of this game is one of my favourite.
You're much more interesting to watch and listen to. You don't sound so animated when you play, like a lot of others I've seen Let's-Plays for. I really appreciate that!
You cannot imagine how the story of Soma connects with me. Thanks a lot, Chris. I've been giving it a lot of thought lately - I still believe the creators of Soma were able to properly ASK a question that each player has to answer for themselves. Damn. Best. Game. Ever. Period. Too good to be true.
What do u mean by 'connects with me'? Please tell more. I can't stop thinking about this game and its plot... Frictional Games made a HUGE step forward in making games and plots. This is just crazy but I think this is one of the very few best games I was ever able to play. I'm a gamer since 1997 and I first time cried playing this game, I mean the ending. And still, I can't stop thinking, these guys are amazing...
What could be simply better this year than watching a walkthrough from the favourite sneak-master letsplayer? I don't even need to play a game to get pleasure from it, as I can watch Odd playing since he always plays games the way I would have played.
That arm when you open the room with the robots is one of Frictional's little moments of horror brilliance. It really is the small, subtle things that make them such good horror games.
i love how he actually reads stuff in game..most youtubers just sort of skip them and read them later when processing...i like it a lot better if they are read...
Hey man, loving the way you play this game. It's so much fun watching you react exactly how I reacted and every time you do what I did, I get more excited each time. I'm gonna be binge watching this all the way through and just wanted to let you know (even though I'm 2 years late) the video and your commentary is awesome!
I came here because H20 Delirious hasn't played the 2nd one yet. Trying to watch the first one from different people then watch the 2nd one..big difference between Delirious and this guy. 😍 Love how he starts the video!! Delirious can barely read, when he does he reads it in a funny way. Love the way this guy plays, he's serious. 😊❤️👌🏼
So I just started watching this, and I don't know if this was implied, but the door code: "2501" may have been a reference to "Project 2501" from the manga/anime "Ghost in the Shell" where an AI that has been created in a laboratory by a bureau within the Japanese government becomes sentient. The AI then goes rogue and starts inhabiting the robotic bodies (or "shells") of other sentient AIs in order to seek asylum, preserve itself and to pass on it's code as any other biological creature would. Your asking questions of your audience as to our thoughts on consciousness, to set the vibe, led me to think that perhaps the "2501" may indeed be a reference to Ghost in the Shell. Though I am not certain of the implications as I know nothing about this game I shall see if my assumptions strike true as I watch your play-through. This is going to be fun. Thanks.
Someone from Cyberpunk suggested this, here is Mystic now! Am somewhat intrigued, though was a bit spoiled already. Either way, am staying just to see if the narrative holds up to what that commentator from the other video said!
Holy God...this is terrifying and epic. I could not play a game like this. I can't deal with the jump scares and suspense. I'm still shaking trying to type this.
Thank you so much for this Experience!! :-) I watched all the episodes and I must say you are a great Actor indeed. You played it awesomely and created unique experience!
also i like the fact that ive watched 3 letsplays on this before this one and every single one was like 'love you miss you mean it??? what is that?' like idk what that is but i love seeing peoples reactions to that
+Mark Callaghan Yep - although with I slight correction; Soma is willingly consumed by the populace as opposed to forced upon/given to the populace by the government. It is "the perfect drug" - a kind of combination of marijuana, alcohol, LSD and Heroin without any of the negative side-effects. This, combined with the removal of high culture e.g. literature, art, etc, and things such as emotion, family, friendship, dreams, love and critical thinking being frowned upon and systematically removed via childhood indoctrination combined with a constant promotion of consumerism and ephemeral distractions, creates a society of utter leisure; a twisted utopia without a soul.
Its so refreshing to see a frictional lets play where the player isnt trying to be a comedy screamer thank you for sticking to the tone which is an unfortunately rare thing for this devs games on youtube nowadays.
I really liked the Intro- know im like a month late on the feedback for this vid set but hey. Have to check in to see what Oddy's put up every once in a while. Looking forward to this. *gets popcorn*
Finished this game the other day, now consuming quality content about it like robots do structure gel! Saw clips of your playthrough in the old video by Mauler, it was his praise of the game that got me to play it and now I'm at the end of this first episode and am looking forward to watching the rest! Your style is very pleasant, great to watch and listen to.
When I first played this game and accessed the computer, I noticed the date of the logs were in the year 2103/2104. I felt chill... I restated the game from the beginning to confirm that it was 2015 at first
For now, I just say "it's a lucid dream". Those can be really, really scary. It's sad that the game is already showing us a lot of the plot (apparently) by asking about consciousness and "stealing the soul".
@@DuBstep115 Lucid dream is when you are *aware that you are dreaming* it does not necessarily mean you are in control. You can have a nightmare where you know it's a dream but are unable to wake up to escape it. As someone who experiences them regularly due to narcolepsy, those are REALLY scary, haha ;)
I found it funny when you tossed the seal out of the way at 31:40 (the way there was a slight pause after you threw it) and then got scared by that thing inside. lol
Seems like you have the right approach to this game, a thougthfull and curios mind, was affraid that let's players would think this would be some "peek a boo" haunted house type of deal (kinda like Frictionals other game Amnesia) and just rush trough the story and not think about the themes and idéas. Really liking this so far. Good job.
HOLD ON! THE VIEW OUTSIDE THE APARTMENT WINDOW LOOKS LIKE THE APARTMENT COMPLEX ACROSS FROM THE MAIN CHARACTER'S HOUSE IN SILENT HILL: THE ROOM! NOBODY ELSE SEE THIS? Is it like an homage to Silent Hill? SOMEBODY TELL ME!
I love the vibe tjis game gives off. It's like the first "Amnesia," mixed with the sci-fi backdrop of "Alien: Isolation," with a dash of oldschool, philosophical science fiction a la Philip K. Dick, not to mention the H.R. Giger-esque biomechanical-looking weirdness.
The view out the apartment window reminded me of the view from the window in Silent Hill 4: The Room. Similar looking. And that thing at 40:14 sounded freaky as hell.
Although it's early days, I'm getting many vibes from this game of various games and films: Video game-wise - Bioshock (Underwater facility), System Shock (Self-aware AI/rogue AI), Gone Home (Being able to interact with object), Alien: Isolation (Vents, avoiding scary entity that may get you, computers, tech-jargon, etc), Dead Space (Futuristic horror vibe) Film-wise: Ghost in the Shell (Exploration of the relationship between machines and consciousness), Alien (Obviously), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Exploring memory and the depths of your own consciousness), The Matrix (Humans vs self-aware machines)
+narc0manic It's almost certainly a reference to GitS. After all, the film was all about uncertainty of what it means to be a human, and the Puppetmaster, aka Project 2501, is an emergent mechanical lifeform.
Blake Hernandez I'm french, but the dictionary seems to back me up? "a warning or indication of (a future event)." Unless I'm mistaken about the themes in this game.
Have no idea of what this game is but my instinct screamed that when the 'scanner' came off that this is part of the 'bombarding the brain with stimuli' bit.
Wow Chris I gotta hand it to ya, I'm 3 years late to this series because I still don't own the game (more interested in watching rather than playing it myself) and every let's play I've tried to watch has been too loud, annoying, missed too many details, didn't pay attention to the notes or dialogue, etc so it was impossible for me to follow the story and I gave up. Now that I've discovered your channel and have watched a few of your series, I decided to give this one a try. FINALLY someone I'll be able to watch from beginning to end!!! Your intro immediately got my full interest, especially since I'm fascinated by the concept of consciousness, being narcoleptic and having struggled with dissociative episodes since childhood. Okay that's enough rambling, time to unpause the video and get back into it! ;)
nice intro odd......really do enjoy watching you develop over the years as a lets player My idea for consciousness: consciousness for me is the ability to act upon past experiences. A tree can not act as it is relatively stationary and it has no ability to act upon experiences. A dog learns quickly that a rolled up newspaper means they will be smacked when they do something bad (paper training is a chore). Without the ability to learn and act I don't believe consciousness can develop.
For a second when I heard " Let me ask you this... " i heard " Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow? " afterwards... because well, ocean and this takes place under the ocean.
Consciousness is actually "us". The body is the vehicle that does everything our consciousness wants. This is maybe a bit dumb sounding, but even when people are in a coma and "unconscious" they still "think". There are many people that woke up from a coma that said they heard their loved ones talking but they never knew who it was. They just heard a faint voice. Some just felt as if it was a loooong sleep. But still, they somehow felt their surroundings even if only by a glimpse and not everyone. I actually believe that when our body dies, our conscious somehow lives on.
Perhaps this is how our brain is showing the directions it takes, the damaged scenery is the damage in our brain, by us trying to solve our way through this is how it is trying to heal itself, setting new pathways. The voices…haven't quite come up with an equivalent metaphor yet...
Just rewatching the beginning of this since I'm working on a review/analysis. In the dream Ashley offers him the medicine, which Simon refuses saying it's for the scan. She says, "It's green," but it's clearly red. Then Simon hears the phone ringing in the dream, and she asks "Who's David Munshi?" But when Simon picks up the phone when he wakes up, the number comes up unknown. Did Simon's subconscious just know that Munshi would be calling him? Also that Hooked book in the drawer is totally foreshadowing for this story!
I think I have figured what this story is about (this is the only episode I've seen). Simon is actually in simulation and the damage to the facility is equivalent to the damage done to his brain. Those mysterious fluids leaking fromnthe ceilings are actually describing the blood leaks in Simon's brain. Those robots describe, with their breathing, Simon's friend who died on the car accident due to internal bleed causing suffocation. You are trying to solve and fix this mysterious facility, but in reality you are doing it to your brain.
I didn't think the "intro" was cheesy at all. For me it simply confirmed that this was the right playthrough for me out of 500 other ones.
I agree tbh. I really appreciate how ChristopherOdd does his let's plays, he takes his time and properly explores the environment, and invests himself into the world and story of games like this. So many RUclipsrs try to go too quickly IMO, I prefer the ones who play at their own pace.
@@HappyMatt12345 yeah me too. I've come back to this series for the 3rd or 4th time thanks to Odds. It just feels so immersive compared to the others

When I started this game and Munshi said Simon's birthday was July 16, 1988, my head went spinning. That's MY birthday. I thought they managed to get that info somehow, from my Steam account or something. The game was screwing with me before it even started.

Snort speed?????
"we should be able to get you to outlive the best of us" I just noticed that. The foreshadowing is real.
+Iskandar yeah that, and maybe the poster that is in your face when waking up from the nightmare.
This game has a lot of foreshadowing i think.
+RubberDorky if you look at the back of the newspaper clipping discussing Simon's crash, it literally says at the top "this game has a surprise ending"
"Game ends with a surprise.". The weird thing is, by the time you reach the end, you probably won't be surprised anymore.

You deserve much more subscribers! You're awesome! Will keep following your work!
Anyone else notice the date at 43:20 it says 2103 / 05 / 09 I have watched a few people play the first hour and none seem to pick up on that
so this guy is 115 years old?
Blake Hernandez Kinda, it gets a bit complicated without spoling it
When I first played this game and accessed the computer, I noticed the date of the logs were in the year 2103/2104. I felt chill... I restated the game from the beginning to confirm that it was 2015 at first
For now, I just say "it's a lucid dream". Those can be really, really scary.
It's sad that the game is already showing us a lot of the plot (apparently) by asking about consciousness and "stealing the soul".
Lucid dream is where you are in control. If its scary its your own fault. If you are not in control its nightmare.
You have a tool, you are underwater. It is Soma Subnautica!
Dude wrote an essay to start his intro with lol. Now _that's_ commitment. Love it.
I really liked the intro you gave for the game. Guess I'll have to wait for the night to watch this : )
this is perhaps your best series chris, my personal fave anyway
It's so cool they have T.O streets and other hints. I don't think I've ever played a game with a Canadian context. Loving the atmosphere so far!
I watched this when it came out, I finally played the game myself and watching mr Odd play it again
After seeing Observer, it was natural to look back at this one. The knocking around of the cans like you startle yourself lol. Good immersion.
Every single time, every single time they troll the players with that tutorial message.
*****
the one about hiding and enemys
I'm rewatching this CRAZY ASS play through
Weird coincidence. Only just started watching this as I was on holiday in Toronto. lovely city.
The view out the apartment window reminded me of the view from the window in Silent Hill 4: The Room. Similar looking. And that thing at 40:14 sounded freaky as hell.
Love the ghost in the shell reference in the door code: 2501
Although it's early days, I'm getting many vibes from this game of various games and films:
Video game-wise - Bioshock (Underwater facility), System Shock (Self-aware AI/rogue AI), Gone Home (Being able to interact with object), Alien: Isolation (Vents, avoiding scary entity that may get you, computers, tech-jargon, etc), Dead Space (Futuristic horror vibe)
Film-wise: Ghost in the Shell (Exploration of the relationship between machines and consciousness), Alien (Obviously), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Exploring memory and the depths of your own consciousness), The Matrix (Humans vs self-aware machines)
Most of the games you listed town those from the earlier Penumbra games by the same guys.
He didn’t close the doors after he opened them in his apartment, that killed me
7:00 holy crap, I thought I was the only one to make those wave doodles
I wonder if the 2501 passcode is intended to be a reference to Ghost in the Shell or if it has other connotations beyond that series.
+narc0manic It's almost certainly a reference to GitS. After all, the film was all about uncertainty of what it means to be a human, and the Puppetmaster, aka Project 2501, is an emergent mechanical lifeform.
+narc0manic Yep, I caught that too. Foreshadowing up the wazoo right there.
+roelani kadmon Do you know what foreshadowing means?
Blake Hernandez I'm french, but the dictionary seems to back me up? "a warning or indication of (a future event)." Unless I'm mistaken about the themes in this game.
roelani kadmon Well this thing you guys are talking about seems to be a reference to something else, not foreshadowing something in this game.
Okay that's enough rambling, time to unpause the video and get back into it! ;)
Yeah, he is great, adult comments and not speedrunning, thinking, reading, brilliant :)
I...NEED...TO...WAIT...FOR MY COPY! xD
+Sora Gamer You're gonna love it.
ChristopherOdd I'm a big amnesia and penumbra fanboy, I hope that I'll love it :D
You really nailed that intro Mr. Odd
2105? Well Munski didn't make the procedure quick at all.
nice intro odd......really do enjoy watching you develop over the years as a lets player
My idea for consciousness: consciousness for me is the ability to act upon past experiences.
"A man chooses, a slave obeys"
Soma is a legendary game. Such a trip.
Great LP Chris keep up the good work
This game is like Alien Isolation, Stanley parable and Deadspace at the same time.... I love this
That intro instantly turns me back to VSauce, dang man. Subbed.
