You can hover over the Shop sign above the store and see the odds changing each round for what rarities are available btw. Backpack Battles is a new Genre in the way that Loop Hero could be a new genre. It just hasn't spread as of yet. I would love this inventory system being mixed with having spells and equipment buffs, have an autobattler with RPG combat using this system to manipulate your character and beat others. It reminds me of old school browser semi-idle games where you just chose which enemy to fight and earned the money based on your odds to win/lose, and then chose how to get stronger and repeat, but this would actually have gameplay mechanics. Having a mode with PvE rounds and then a PvP round, with elimination after 3 losses or something would be awesome. Similar to the old Warcraft multiplayer TD games.
Such good insights, I hope they took at least some of your ideas to heart. I don't expect Backpack Battles! to be that ideal game, but they might make a 2nd game after releasing. Imagine what these 2 people could produce with actual cash flow and the feedback from their first brilliant game.
Maybe in an alternate universe we will get the good old salt chronicles "backpackbattle Edition" i know he edits the second channel and i really miss the compilations man.
Interesting opinions on what the game could add but I really think it would need to be done by a bigger studio. Maybe not a triple-A studio because those are AWFUL at monetizing properly and providing good DLC content, but a medium sized studio could definitively pull it off. As far as Backpack Battles go, I think the two devs are moving towards exactly what they want to: A casual and cartoonish-looking roster. But you are right as far as it goes when it comes to the genre, there's a lot to be explored yet and it's up to those brave enough to venture forward and test the waters. Backpack Battles has shown that there's A LOT of interest towards hybrid PVP/PVE games where matchmaking isn't "LIVE" but it isn't just bots either... I could see a game like this working on consoles like Nintendo Switch and phones too, kinda like how Shadowverse took over phones for a while.
Auto Chess: Origin has pve battles interspersed with Battlegrounds-like pvp which is nice especially for the first few rounds when builds aren't all that different, it works very well imo and would probably benefit the lives system of Backpack Battles even more. I prefer lives to hp, too often I feel like I'm doing well in an auto battler only to be knocked out extremely fast by someone with god rng before I get a chance to finish my build (as a casual player), lives ensure you get at least so many chances before you're done and the option to keep going if you do well is awesome. The worst part of the game for me is just how fiddly the backpack system can be, it's simultaneously very engaging yet frustrating with how many possibilities there are every round when trying to optimize everything. It's also unclear how activating stars actually works and upgrading items while cool is messy and unintuitive. The class system could be better but is not bad, I do think the subclass items could appear sooner and be visible from the start so you have a more clear goal to work toward. Maybe there could be similar unique items for each class at the start to help with identity beyond the passive backpack bonus.
I feel a gritty, Diablo art style would kill this game - the Swords and Sandals flash game look adds to the vibe/charm of it. A slightly more designated class item pool would be nice. I think the aesthetic of classes should not be designated heroes like Hearthstone does, but more so create your own characters. The framework of picking classes fits well as it is. Adding a large quantity of different starting classes would convolute things for new people and nongamers. Adding a bunch of choice and variables will turn people away and confuse them, like Hearthstone battlegrounds has done for some. Sweaty casual games are the best kind of games in my opinion, so I think it should try to keep the simple direction with the intricate nuance that anybody can recognize. A Backpack Heroes, Slay the Spire with desynced PvP mode you want for us fellow hardcore gamers should be an alternative mode from the base, but I believe that is beyond the scope of what this specific game is.
I just want to say I'm so happy you posted this because I love this game and I'm so happy that you do. Also, I'd watch you no matter the game you play, as I have for roughly 10 years. Haha.
Imagine battlegrounds had a feature you could save a first-place build, then battle it (best of 3) against others' builds and you'd have a leader board and all. Boy that would be awesome...
I"m sure you have seen TFT before but when you talk about those PVE encounters throughout the matches sounds a lot like what they do in TFT no? I do think thats a neat idea
The thing i enjoy the most during such adventure type games (like Minion Masters adventure mode) is chosing "perks" - passive effects - that can influence your whole run in different ways. I think such perks would be great rewards for beating a boss in backpack battles. i don't really like the idea of gaining/losing items at random, because i find losing core items of your build due to RNG very frustrating personally. I'd rather have choosable reward options like " would you rather loot X gold / Item X/Y/Z / gain X free shop refreshes / Heal X lives / etc." The concept of the game or the genre rather is incredible and i'm interested to see where it leads
It's a really fun and addicting game with a good concept... However after playing awhile in Diamond/Master ranks, they still have a lot of work to do. The game is incredibly unbalanced and they have to keep adjusting items and builds, Ranger is just straight up better than Reaper in the meta because the builds are so much easier to achieve and perform much better on average. Ranking is sometimes not very fun because there is so much RNG in matchmaking, You might win 9 battles in a row and then lose 5 straight to random god builds/counter comps back to back. Hopefully they figure out a better way to determine who you match up against, I am a big fan of how you can take your time and setup your inventory without worrying about a timer but at the same time, you have no idea who you are up against. You need to win so many more games just to climb in ladder but you lose so many points and games very easily, its out of your control, you can very easily drop 3 lives in the first 3 turns and you are basically screwed, there's no way you can risk combining items and going for a build after that. Because of this the meta becomes very stale as people all play the exact same builds, they will force early game power just to survive and screw over their opponents, it's not very fun not being able to at least attempt to build what you want to or try new items out. I haven't even mentioned how some items are just brokenly overpowered, underpowered and some Builds are strickly better than others...No one is playing a full poison build lmao. Anyways I am still enjoying the game and hopefully they keep working hard on it, introducing more items and characters to play could solve some of these issues too.
Yeah match-making feels odd. I'm pretty sure that some sort of MMR exists. I'm at masters and I got paired against Leaf/Beach Sabers with full bagpack (not fully used though) in 14 round of unranked after losing to even (ffs!) stronger comp. Won but come on... That is bulshit xd Dude felt that strong at this point of the game he was even trolling. And in unranked you have whole plethora of players. It really feels recently that I'm playing Masters in later rounds no matter if I pick ranked or unranked. The only upside is easier early ;/ Speaking of - yeah it is way too rng based and too punishing. You get a bad starter and you can maybe crawl out with sth like 1-2 lifes. You are not going into Survival with less than 2 initially unless you you feel godlike strong. Even when you make 10 wins that's it. All because of 2 bad rolls at the very beginning of your game or 2 mediocore vs good of opponents... They should at least remove dmg in 1 round. Wouldn't solve the issue but would help. For me that's the biggest problem right now with BB.
I am so glad you discovered this game. I've sunk... embarrassing amounts of time into it. But agree with you entirely about the current lack of polish / feature-list. I came to similar conclusions to you, and fell off immediately. Will be back once it's at 1.0 But OMG, PLEASE MAKE YOUR OWN VIDEO GAME!!!!
Perhaps when you encounter another player, the setup round should tell you their most common item types like how Battlegrounds tells you your opponents minion types. That way if there is meta slaves, you can predict and counter them
Tbh I stopped watching your BG content but stayed subscribed coz yaknow, you're the krip. If you started uploading BB content, well, that would be lovely.
I actually don’t agree about the first suggestion proposed… There is something somewhat quaint about the fact that you’re not some special hero, but rather “a ranger” who just bought items well! It sorta reminds me of games that allow for more of a female audience, like potion simulator and such. Going grittier and more epic with more lore will make it not as fun of a casual experience.
Today's Fact: The longest video game marathon ever recorded was over 135 hours of playing 'Call of Duty: Black Ops 2,' set by a man in Australia in 2012.
I hate the idea of loosing items. Depending on RNG you can loose that item that your entire build depends on, from a single loss. No thanks. I think the lives could be fixed by just going infinite until you either loose all of your lives, or you become the player with most wins in a set period of time (the past 7 days for example). Each player with the most wins becoming a consecutive "top ladder boss" to beat.
I love this game to pieces but it likely will never hit big until a big company steals the idea and does it huge. That said, is this not easily one of the greatest "demos" of all time? I have 60 god damn hours in a demo in 2023.
