    Another plus; My Robot is from 2018 and it has never failed on me or broken down. It is a tank. And I use it several times a day. The only thing that will wear is the silicone ring. I have to replace it once in a half year. And after more than six years I still love it. With all the variables I keep on learning.

      I concur. It's amazing and I too bought mine in 2018. Sometimes my silicone ring last longer than 6 months. I've had a couple last more than year. For people wondering, the silicone ring stretches out over time due to heat and eventually interferes with attaching the portafilter. It takes a little over a minute to replace. The Cafelat Robot is so incredibly easy and simple to maintain.

      Interesting, I’m coming up to 5 years on my first gasket! A couple of weeks ago I had 2 slight leaks of straight water and thought it was time for a change, but in the end it only needed a clean as there were grounds stuck underneath and was causing misalignment.

    Your review is spot on. I bought the robot about 5 months ago to replace my Gaggia classic pro and have been very happy with the decision. I also love my Cafelat Robot. It replaced my pump machine I had for over a decade and makes even more delicious espresso. A huge plus for me is that it is always ready. It doesn't have a water tank that needs heating and it super easy too clean. That makes me use it more often and enjoy more espresso every day. From needing/wanting espresso to drinking high quality espresso in 3-4 minutes is a blessing!

  • @ziptiefighter
    @ziptiefighter 17 часов назад +8

    I've enjoyed my robot for nearly three years now.
    5-6 bar is ideal IMO. Anything over 7 bar is unnecessarily excessive and a true workout. The mittens make the pressing experience far easier on one's hands.
    It's a delightful minimalist way to make true espresso. The only departure from stock I've done is adding a tiny mirror (3D printed by a UK robot fan) that fits on the stock barista gage.
    It's practically zero maintenance. No descaling. Just a modest occasional wipedown and you're done.
    In lieu of the PF plug for preheating, I just dump the hot water I've used to preheat my glass into the PF just prior to adding the grounds. Eazy peazy. And the piston doesn't contact the brew water do there's negligible heat loss there. If water is contacting the piston, you've filled the PF too high.
    That was a very thorough and accurate review. 👊

    As a happy Robot owner who also pulls light-to-medium, I think you covered everything, including the downsides. As always, your reviews are so thorough. I will say that as a tall person, moving the pressure gauge to the top (which you can do with a cheap bracket or a printed part from Etsy) is really great - I can see the shot mirror, scale, and pressure gauge from one position, moving only my eyes.

    This video inspired me to bust out my Robot. I had two shots go way too long from being ground too fine, but somehow both still tasted very very good. It’s incredible how forgiving it is and how much you can rescue almost anything. Great breakdown and video!
    Quick tip with the paper filter: I prewet the paper and stick it to the dispersion screen before putting in the basket. Just an easy way to get it seated properly.

  • @ab4697
    @ab4697 20 часов назад +16

    I think the Robot workflow is much easier than the Flair. To preheat, I just place a small diameter bowl of boiling water on top of a mug and slide it under so the piston is about 1-1.5 cm immersed and let it sit there for a minute. After making espresso, i slide the mug+bowl back under to help rinse off the piston before I wipe it down with a washcloth.

    I’ve spent more than 10k on multiple espresso machines including a custom built lever machine and guess what…. In the beginning I liked the BLING and I naively thought spending more money would also equal way better espresso…. “Totally wrong!” I’m downgrading to a robot or similar and going to pair it with a grinder that’s around 3k. The biggest “game changer” for me, that was not mentioned in the video, is custom water. With a boiler you have to worry about the water you put in it and definitely avoid stuff like calcium chloride or potassium bicarbonate. With any machine like this I can tweak the water without worry and the results are better espresso than I could ever imagine with any boiler machine, + no maintenance. Downgrading your water but upgrading your espresso machine is a hurdle that can never be overcome , whether you realize this or not your coffee will always suffer. It just took a lot of $$$$$ and 20 years of palette development to figure this out. Great review

      @@samwise2010 minerals in the coffee extract coffee differently. If you pull a shot with something like distilled water (which is also hard on your boiler) and then add mineralized water to your espresso is will taste a bit differently than just brewing with mineral water from the beginning, also the ration of minerals and ppm or strength will be different. Depending on your tastebuds it could taste drastically different or just a little. But as long as it tastes good to you.

    I have a pump machine (Lelit MaraX) and have had my eye on lever machines for a long time. You mentioned the ability to save shots mid-flow as a benefit of a manual lever. I actually have learned to save my shots on the lever machine by pulling longer/shorter based on how much pressure and flow rate is being maintained (entirely eyeballed on the pressure gauge and cheap $20 scale, no fancy flow rate scale). I have the expansion valve dialled in for 10 bar with a blind basket. When I pull the shot if it is consistently pinned at 10 bar then I'll stop the shot a few grams short. If it's flowing fast and struggling to maintain 9 bar (hovering around 8-9 bar) then I'll keep going a few grams longer. Between this strategy and starting my grind setting (on my Niche Zero) right in the middle of the espresso range for each new coffee I've found I don't waste any shots anymore. Basically every single shot comes out drinkable at a bare minimum, with only minor tweaks needed to get it perfect!

    As a robot owner, I bought the thundies and wouldn’t recommend them. They leak because of the material if you let it sit on your countertop… ask me how I know. I have a small hack using a Breville Dual Boiler disc (which Lance also covered) but it’s nice that Cafelat came up with something!

    As a dark roast drinker I’ve never found the need for the gauge or to weigh the pour. In terms of dialing in the espresso you didn’t mention changing the dose, only the grind. I find it easier to move the dose weight up or down, finding great results in a range between 13-19 grams. If the new coffee is radically different from the previous batch I will then consider a grind change, but I generally stick to the same family of roasts as I cannot abide light roasts.

The only maintenance required is that every couple of years you might have to change the gasket and the replacement is included. You don’t have to worry about what water you use because the water never runs through the machine. I was concerned because I’m 5 feet tall and 97 pounds, but I found that standing on a stool gives me the leverage I need. I did have to upgrade my grinder from the OXO to the Niche Zero. For preheat i place the portafilter with the basket upside down on top of the kettle, so that it's over the holes where the steam comes out of. By the time the water is boiling for a minute, it's already super hot, hotter than if you filled it water, and you don't have to waste your nice coffee water. This doesn't heat the piston, of course.

    You forgot a category of people that may find that machine attractive. The kind that appreciates the way products were manufactured back in the old days: made to survive.
    I feel like this machine was an investment. Measuring the price of this machine by looking at dollar per espresso shot, it will just keep on dropping with simple care.
    The robot is my first espresso device and I thought this would be a step to a pump machine. I couldn't have been more wrong. The only machine that I'm currently considering buying one day is the Strietman CT2. It gives me the same vibe with the convenience of a built in open boiler and the taste profile that comes with 49mm baskets. Not to mention that it's another art piece in the kitchen that I can probably pass down to my children or grandchildren.
    These devices will tell a story. A Linea Micra will probably end up in an attic one day. It might take a while, but it's inevitable.

    Additional tips:
    1. Preheat by pouring boiling water on your portafilter (handle, basket and puck screen) in your drinking cup. I took a while to find a cup that fits under the Robot and hold the portafilter. This way, you get to heat your cup too. I am currently using Bialetti 170 mL Capuccino Cup. Fits perfectly under the Robot and on the Wacacao mini scale at the same time.
    2. Measure the water in the portafilter. Try not to eyeball the depth. It will keep your shot way more consistent.
    3. When you press, if you feel yourself pressing hard and the water still flows smoothly and easily enough, it IS 8 bars. This is for those who really don’t want to buy the pressure gauge.
    If it is concrete-feeling, it is 12 bars already. If you feel that it is hard, it is overly done for sure.
    Timing-wise, I am doing under 5 minutes.
    The milk is the one that takes time and vexed me for so long until this year. I nearly bought an electric espresso machine. But Subminimal release the new Nanofoamer Pro and that changes everything. I dare say the Pro jug does better milk than a beginner on a boiler machine. It probably does milk better than Bambino Plus (which does better milk than other entry level espresso machine according to James Hoffman).

    Any thoughts on how a Strietman CT2 Lever espresso would compare to the Robot? I know that the CT2 is about 3.5K CAD vs 550 CAD for the Robot but would the CT2 be like an end game version?

    • @DaddyGotCoffee
      @DaddyGotCoffee  9 часов назад +3

      Man, the Strietman is a true endgame machine if you have the appetite to use these types of machines. That being said, the robot gets you a LOT of the way there for a lot less money. One day I hope to own a Strietman. Also working on a cremina for the new year. I know I do a lot with pump machines on here but manual direct levers are my roots. ☕️

    Hey! I saw your video about the rokpresso like years and years ago, do you think it can compete against the robot since it uses a normal portafilter and could be used with a 51mm basket

  • @LyK0sa
    @LyK0sa 19 часов назад

    You say about not being able to pre heat the spouts with the plug, but that's not entirely true...kinda. You can fit the plug into the spouts themselves and use the portafilter sans basket to preheat the piston, which allows you to actually have the piston submerged in boiling water similar to the thundies. This means you can do all of your basket prep in advance, although you can't preheat the basket at the same time, so it depends where your priorities lie in peak temp vs temp stability. I'd say the piston arguably has more impact.
    You can however pre heat the basket after it's prepped by doing an overflow pour. Fill it over the sink, and just keep pouring so that it overflows for a while. Just be careful to have it tilted away from your hand, I did scald myself when I wasn't laying atte to once.

  • @Klingenschmied
    @Klingenschmied Час назад

    Dont fill the basket to the top with hot water. Leave 1cm of room, that way the piston will not touch the water and soak next to nothing heat from it (the silicon ring seals air tight so when you are pushing down you are actually pushing down the air and the water with it).

    • @lorenzomariani7386
      @lorenzomariani7386 19 часов назад +1

      The design of the flair (longer lever, better handle) makes it easier to press. The flair pro also has electric heating so you have to worry less about finding ways to heat it up. The quality of the coffee will depend entirely on the quality of the beans, of the grinder and your ability. Lever machines differ in workflow, not really in what results are achievable.

    got a robot recently and i love the shots so far. Have noticed one issue though. Have been grinding my coffee with an 1zpresso J ultra, which definitely can grind fine enough. I kept grinding finer and finer and my shots kept pouring out hitting at most 5 bar. Was reading around and found out that the cafelat robot has some puck lift issues where preinfusing with low pressure 4-5 bar can make water go under the puck and just flow right through. Since then I've been ramping up pressure immediately to 7-9 bars for preinfusion before tapering down to 6 bars and the shots pull much better, grinds have gone back coarser as well. Just a weird quirk which I'm not sure is a common issue across all Robots

    Ok, stupid question. I KSed the Meticulous. I hadn't espresso'd much, only at cafes and then filter brews at home, so I wasn't fussed about the wait and it seemed cool. Recently the algorithm has been throwing Robot videos at me, I'd forgotten how nifty it is (I wasn't looking to get into espresso when I first became aware of it), and I've got some holiday funds flexibility because there wasn't really anything to tell my partner I wanted. But is there any point to it if I'm getting a Meticulous (beyond the I-own-something-cool factor)? Like, I didn't mind having an Aeropress, a V60, a French press, and a moka pot as they're all so different. Plenty of people have more than one way to brew espresso because they are aficionados and see their machines as doing different things. But the Meticulous is a lever espresso machine. Is the Robot essentially the same thing minus water heating and computer control?

    I don't understand why this gives you more control than a pump machine? We have pump machines with flow control and pressure profiling such as the Decent. The machine you show in this video even has a flow control paddle. Why can't you achieve the same or similar results using those?

    • @Charles-pg6wx
      @Charles-pg6wx 13 часов назад +2

      It's hard to explain, but you can actually feel what's going on in the shot through your arms with a direct lever machine. You can tell when the puck starts to degrade or when channeling begins and adjust the pressure in real time by feel. You aren't waiting for the feedback of seeing the flow rate or what's going on at the bottom of the portafilter.

If you have seen this machine or used it, which I am pretty sure you haven't, you would have known about the quality of materials that went into it. Paul could underprice it because, he assembles them himself. Manual machines like 9barista, olympia mina, which only 'makes espresso and doesn't steam' are more expensive.
