J-Hope is enlisting in the Korean military soon it's mandatory in South Korea for all able bodied men, he will be the 2nd member of BTS to do so. So this is his goodbye for now song before he enlists. He's admired J. Cole for a long time so working with him is a dream come true for him. They met for the first time at Lollapalooza where J-Hope headlined. J-Hope started out as a street dancer dancing to J. Cole's music. BTS started out as a hip hop group so doing something like this isn't too much of a stretch as people may think. Kpop music in general always combines English and Korean. If you're interested you should check out BTS version of J. Cole's Born Sinner called Born Singer. BTS also has a song called Hip Hop Phile from 2014 where they name drop all the rappers and hip hop artists who have inspired them.

    For those who don't know..
J.Cole is jhopes biggest influence/inspiration and muse. JHopes album "HOPE WORLD" is a play on J.Coles first album "Cole World". The BTS song "Born Singer" is also a play on J.Coles song "Born Sinner". The Avirex fit jhope is wearing is also homage to J.Cole. The street jhope was on at the beginning is the SAME EXACT street J.Cole filmed his "SIMBA" music video on. And jhope dancing during Coles verse is because jhope before BTS used to dance to J.Cole songs back in the day.. Even jhopes name is inspired by j.cole. The visual easter eggs and homage paid to J.Cole in this by jhope is insane. Shows his genuine love for a GOAT like J.Cole.
This whole collab is legendary and will be cemented in history forever.. This a big W for Kpop and HipHop

That underground subway scene had lots of meaning. jhope used to freestyle to J.Cole songs when he young. And now he came full circle and is dancing to J.Cole verse on his own song. They were conversing in their first artistic love language, rapping and dancing. That moment felt very intentional, almost magical. :)))
There were lots of references in that dance sequence. When J.Cole talked about "handing over the crown", jhope touches he head. When J.Cole said about "picking different hobby", jhope looked lost while dancing. That little kid at the beginning is wearing the same outfit as J.Cole. He was walking on the same streets that J.Cole did in his 2007 song "Simba". Jhope was dancing underground while J.Cole was rapping on the top and finally he "EXIT" from the subway and made his way to the top.. :) jhope let J.Cole had the big part intentionally, he is his Idol, Muse and i believe it meant world to him to have him on the track.

They linked up at Loolapalooza, J-Hope had an entire set there, and met with J-Cole. He's a big fan of J-Cole, since the Friday Night Lights.
They colabbed before, kinda, BTS has an early song called Born Singer and it's the instrumental from Cole's Born Sinner.
It's a great colab, how Cudi said on that Wayne podcast, he got to do a song with one of his favs.
Also, the song is about leaving, for both of them. J-Cole apparently wants to quit the hip hop stuff, and J-Hope is enrolling in army (mandatory). BTS as a group will be on hiatus until 2025, until then only Solo stuff for them

J Cole was gracious, and BTS was appreciative. It probably set a respectful tone for this project.

J Hope is joining the Korean Military Soon, it's Mandatory for Koreans, so this was his goodbye Git for Fans. He used to dance to J Cole's Songs when he was still a Street Dancer, and after a listen to Friday Night Lights, he started writing songs and making his own Beats. He even named his first Mix Tape Hope-World after Cole-World. That's also the reason he gave Jermaine so many bars in his Song, he did out of respect. Recommend Checking out his Album Jack in the Box, it's a Hip Hop Album with lots of 90s Style Beats and crazy lyrics. Songs that i recommend, Arson, More, Stop, What if (he sampled ODB on that one), Airplane and Daydream.

J Hope chose to give J Cole the majority of the time out of respect. J Hope has called J Cole his muse since he started dancing at 10. The "happy-go-lucky" song was composed by J Hope. He put it on his last album. Without lyrics and as a break between songs. He even used it at Lalapoolza, I do not doubt that since that is where they met, that is where it all started.
And since this was his "goodbye for now," song to ARMY...to many of us, we are grateful, and believe the love J Hope has for ARMY is strong.

i have so many thoughts that i might just end up rambling but still, i’m going to say it here. also, english is not my first language so excuse any errors haha please bear with me.
so j. cole is indeed wrestling with himself if he’s going to leave the game already but j-hope on the other hand, is already set to leave to be enlisted in the military. although he’ll come back after his duty, the paradox still stands in this present moment.
speaking of being introspective or reflecting their careers, we can see cole staying at the top and still having a crisis because of the status he’s at now. as usual, he’s being raw and open about his conflicted emotions (kinda reminds me of bts suga’s daechwita & other songs where in artists’ open up about the struggles that comes with the fame & how they deal with it - especially when it causes them to lose their identity or the reason why they started in the first place) hope on the other hand, is on the underground, dancing his heart out, taking his time on his way to the top. he seems so determined to meet the one he looks up to. (j-hope cited that j. cole is one of his greatest influences countless of times to the point he even called him his muse; check out hip hop phile & bts adaptation of born sinner, “born singer” which will be a decade ago already this coming july). that opening scene on the alley also reminds me of simba.
but what really strikes me the most is despite showing their differences, there are interesting things i noticed which also displays how they are very much on the same page. first, the rhythm. i love how both of them provided rhythm for each other. hobi is the one who came up with the whistling melody & the long time in-house producer of bh, pdogg. but we see that jermaine is the one whistling and even sings the chorus/adlibs. i know, it might be such a little detail to point out but as we go on, we can see that the rest of the mv supports that.
we proceed to a scene where hobi starts to dance: he’s dancing to jermaine rapping & thus, letting him take over. but... is it really just cole taking over the rest of it, showcasing how hip hop-centric this song is? imo no, not really. because j-hope let j. cole do his thing while he also begins to focus on doing his own thing. (as aforementioned, hobi used to be a street dancer. he has b-boy roots. so him dancing in the underground might be a double reference to how he was literally a performer on the street, and even when he got signed to big hit, the company was far from being a mainstream back then. with bh almost getting bankcrupt at some point. bts & their label has that underdog story but i won’t go down that rabbit hole. there are introduction/guides y’all can check out if you want to). they are both showcasing two elements of hip hop: emceeing & breakdancing. (hobi can also beatbox too btw & the classic record scratching? hell yeah. it could’ve been dope too if an actual turntablist & some graff artist got featured on the mv just for all the hip hop elements to come together.)
next, when cole’s bar goes “some days, i wonder if i need to pick a different hobby” we can see the parallel as hope stops dancing and we can see him just standing there & then suddenly diverting his attention on a different direction. (additional: ‘hobby’ > ‘hobi’ could be cole’s pun to nickname of the one he’s collabing with. can also pertains to when someone changes his hobby & transitions, he’s choosing a different side of himself. a different hobi.) j-hope didn’t auditioned to be a rapper. he just learned to rap when he was still a trainee along with rm & suga which are both known underground emcees in sokor hip hop scene prior to them ultimately choosing this path. j-hope said in american hustle life that when he first came in big hit, all the members (former trainees) are rappers, he was the only one who dance.
and when jermaine also said that he’s deep in with this rappin’, it’s all he knows. he never did nothin’ better, it’s hard to let it go. again, it also correlates to the same dilemma hobi had. j-hope once said that he came to seoul from his province & didn’t know anything besides dancing. it’s the only skill he honed. like j. cole who mastered his craft because he focused on just doing that single thing and made it his entire life. that no matter how far he already come, he would still feel lost if he quit his passion.
i just love the mutual respect and recognition they have for each other’s artistry.
i’m a fan of cole since his early days when i was still in elementary & hobi is not my bias but recently, he became my strongest bias wreckers amongst the members. i was also a local underground femcee/lyricist here in the ph until i stopped due to circumstances that took a toll on me which caused me to function poorly in all of the things i used to be passionate about.
but now, hearing this song from artists i’ve always looked up to, i can feel something shifts in me. this is both humbling and empowering. this still feels like a fever dream to me or to anyone who are also both hip hop head, with j. cole as one of their favorite artists, and an ARMY especially a j-hope stan.
both hoseok & jermaine’s verses are so meaningful as it is. but as to someone who could just afford to perform on the streets, this joint just speaks to my soul. especially being fully aware where they are now but also where they came from, they moved me once again. i can feel my creative juices flow ever since i’ve watched this for the first time that i immediately got back on writing again now that it feels like my heart has been restored... if the art is calling your name again, you just follow its lead because it doesn’t call what it cannot enable, equip and sustain.
i also love the “it’s my call” billboard at the back. reminding me that yeah, it’s my call if i already want to stop or still keep on pushing through. but also in a sense that “it’s my call” as in how could i just decide on that so easily when i didn’t choose the gift in the first place, it’s the gift that chose me. it’s my calling.

Bro...I thought you were way more tapped in than that. Cole wasn't forcing his perspective on his friend but was showing him simple perspective while saying that's God. Not just the big things that we can point at. But something we take for granted daily is God. That's what Cole was saying.

So J-Hope and J-Cole both headlined Lollapalooza on different days in Chicago, July 2022. They had the opportunity to meet. J-Cole is J-Hopes musical influence, and he was inpired to start writing his own lyrics and rap because of J-Cole. He would dance to J-Coles songs when he was a street dancer as a teenager. This was a full circle moment for J-Hope. And this song was written by J-Hope as a song for his fandom ARMY, before he has to serve his mandatory military service (18 months). So a good bye for now, and not a hype song, because it wasn't meant to be that. All seven BTS members are dropping albums right now. 2 are enlisted (Jin, J-Hope) and 5 have released solo projects. I think if you check out Agust D's recent song Haegeum, you might like that one better. You also might like J-Hope's ARSON. His album JACK IN THE BOX was darker than his mixtape HOPE WORLD. His album is FIRE, and he killed his Lollapalooza performance. Anyway, I'll link the two songs and you can decide. By the way, Agust D's album debuted at number 1 on the Billboard Top Rap Albums Chart, and number 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. He's on a sold out world tour right now, and I will be attending May 16, 2023 in Oakland, CA.

I appreciate you sharing your honest opinion. Respect. Some fans want to bully reactors into saying that everything BTS does is amazing. Just because you're a fan of the group, it doesn't mean that you're going to be a fan of every song. I think some reactors fake their opinions and tell Army what they want to hear so they'll keep getting views. BTS wants us to enjoy their music for its art, not because of their popularity.
I'm Army. I love almost all of their music but there are a few songs that even I skip. I wish you'd react to more.

      some info
BTS is a 7-member boy group under Big Hit Music, they debuted on June 13th, 2013. They have 3 rappers and 4 vocalist (they all dance, fun fact: Jhope was an underground dancer and the two other rappers [RM and Suga] were underground rappers before BTS).
while you might want to compare the rappers of the group, many fans (called ARMY) have been saying one thing to distinguish their styles by something other than their voice
      RM: lyricism & poetry
      Suga: Delivery & feeling
      JHope: Rhythm & flow
      RM analyzes the world
      Suga critiques it
      and Jhope visualizes it
each member stands alone as great artist in their own right, they have their individual sounds. But when together they make art.
