Yes. Yes. I've spent far to long sitting in front of my computer recently, so I thought I'd sit in front of my computer a little longer, but this time on an exercise bike! Welcome to the zany world of CSA's Computer Athlete, from 1995.

None of this should be attempted at home.
But you're doing it at home.
Iphones are for dumb people. Get real phone.
🎩Now that's what you call hitting a legacy Jackpot!
@@pompshuffle562 this ain't a woooosh
Did a search for Peloton on Google and your £10 bike appeared at the top of the page in the shopping ads for £166.00 at Wish . Com 🤣
I can't believe two of these were purchased in one year, let alone that both orders came from the same person. We thank you for your sacrifice.
This looks even more serious than most of today's fitness stuff for consoles and phones.
I don't recall having so much fun watching anybody exercise before.
That's basically watching any sports games or any competitive event that you like.
That controller would be perfect for Decathlon. Also: using a desk fan would make you break speed of sound
You beat me to posting the fan idea lol
Thought you meant the store for a second there, wondered why they'd want a dos Game in their store 😅
mate this was clearly made for today - we have those mini under-desk exercise pedals for using whilst working at a pc these days - set the sensors up ONCE and leave under your desk, little pedals in the middle.. perfection! Get us a modern windows driver for these things and watch the VR games roll out! I want this future to exist!
You didn't try to play Doom with it. LGR will be disappointed :P
Let alone Super Mario 64... tetrabitgaming would be disappointed
Cor! I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking _Road Rash,_ or a hockey game. I don't know if Clint would be up to a streaming challenge against Peter, but it is an entertaining thought.
Rip and tear those calories! (Lol..)
LGR will be far more disapointed that he didn't play Duke 3d
Trust me. I would if I could.
One of my aunts had a dedicated spot in her living room for her exercise bike, so a screen splitter (commonly used in the 90's when needing to show the same thing on multiple monitors) was all that she would have needed for a permanent set-up
I certainly miss a lot of the ol' MS-DOS days...
It's still amazing remembering all the times I was just trying to play a game, spend hours tinkering with autoexec.bat etc just to play something like, "Stunts".... And despite how much things have changed, that basic knowledge still helps me every single day messing with the PC, electronics, etc.... Love your videos and hope you and everyone else is doing great! Have a wonderful day!!!! 👍😎
"You can punch the competitors"

Me: Mom, I want the Ring Fit Adventure!

@Drumslav Czechisenko definitely more versatile!
OK, fair enough they may not be native English speakers, but, is it me or does this not make any sense?
@ I don't see anything wrong with it? But I could be wrong
_Computer_ and _athlete_ in the same sentence: Comedy gold
Coming from a cowboy, your statement is accurately stereotypical.
this is why we retro tech enthusiasts usually make a disk image of every old floppy that fall in our hands before we stuff it into random old machines. But we all learn from experience, don't we?
lol, that does nothing if the first drive you use eats it.
@@_PatrickO True. After all, how would you image it if the drive ate it.
Though, depending on what kind of equipment you have a damaged disk might still be readable enough to create a copy...
@@KuraIthys Of course there is no way to test a drive for reliability by using a floppy of lesser importance in it.
And no way to set aside a drive you know and have tested on less crucial floppies in a machine for imaging. Especially not if you are running a youtube channel for years and years and have tons of old computers around.
I have sacrificed a number of old, worthless floppy disks to make sure drives work correctly. I would be so sad if any of the software I've had for 30 years got ruined.
I bet someone took their computer and this whole thing to the gym in the 90s.
Imagine this and Road Rash together where you physically swing and kick!
Last thing I expected it was to be fun and work well. That almost never happens in those type of videos.
Was getting a Chocobo vibe from the music at the start
How come no one has done this as a phone app and accessory? This would be so fun at the gym!
"setting this up each time you wanted to exercise?!" - OH YES! that's part of the exercise itself to be fit enough, even if the setup does not work after that ;)
These things are way cooler than stupid plastic attachments for a WiiMote.
Another Excellent Episode, as always! 👍✨
Laughed my ass off, when you realized you could hurt the competition. A great moment!
If I had a '90s PC and some money, I would definitely buy this too.
Man you crack me up!!!! Love it. Never knew this existed. Just awesome it worked as well as it did.
Why am I so extremely nostalgic for these 80/90s style PC setups? It’s just a grey monitor on a grey computer, really,
I love when you sound crushed that something isn't as rubbish as you were expecting
This was really funny and the editing was amazing, I wish more youtubers would use this style
As a kid, my parents bought an "Exertainment" bike for my SNES, which was similar to this; it let you convert your SNES into a Peloton-esque game thing, and similarly had a Road-Rash style feature where you could knock people off their bikes. It was pretty fun.
Hi Mr. Nastalga, I am one of the inventors of the Computer Athlete. Thanks for making such a thorough and enjoyable video of the experience! You captured every aspect that we hoped to provide in the game. I only wish that you had done our infomercial back in the late '90s. haha. I wrote all the code in C and inline assembler on a 12 MHz 286. Glad you enjoyed it!
Man if I wanna get fit with MSDOS I would carry one of the 90s AT cases around, those things were heavy steel plates welded in the shape of a box.
c'mon, the cases weren't that bad. at least, compared to some of today's (cheaper) products, they didn't bend out of shape if you looked at them funny. if you're looking for _heavy_ components, I'd go for double-height 5.25" harddisks, probably the 10-20mb ones for minimal storage-to-weight ratio. or early 90s 17/19/20" lead encased CRT monitors, like from EIZO or Radius -- today, you'll want 2 people to safely move around a big screen for it's size. 25y ago you'd want two people handling it because of it's weight.
(seriously, though: when I got my 1st SSD, I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry due to that discrepancy. which is laughable by now, considering what crazy numbers we pack into just our *phones* today)
That is impressive that it still works as well as it does all these years later. And we need, nay demand, a second video of this with Octavia trying it.
You should get a medal for buying two of those, that kind of commitment to making a video about this product should be rewarded.
So have you binned the floppy drive that chewed up the disk?
Man that looked fun, at the beginning i thought it would be a pile of crap
12:20 Put a fan there. We're gonna world record this shit.
This could be really interesting even today if combined with a modern VR headset.
Actually laughed out loud watching this !! ... which is more than I do with the usual 'You'll laugh out loud' RUclips vids! Thanks !!
I think this is one of your best videos yet :D
Brilliant episode. It really looks like you enjoyed this oddware.
I can totally see Patrick Bateman using this while listening to Huey Lewis and the News on massive headphones.
"Have it!" Man, I love your channel.
This was before everything was wireless 😁
Today it would be a IoT device where your progress would be uploaded to a server somewhere in the world.
Genuinely had my laughing out loud - genius!
You made my day. So funny! Thanks from Germany!
A 90s Zwift / Tacx Trainer kind of game, that's cool. I got my bike set up in the shed with a docking for my laptop and an external screen, so the convenient part applies today too.
I've worked for the Trials game franchise, if you're familiar with it, and few years ago I had this crazy idea to take the traditional exercise controllers a notch forward. So, I built an exercise bicycle controller, which required you to actually lean back and forth on the bicycle to control the rider posture, therefore the center of gravity, in the game respectively, alongside with the intense pedaling you had to do to accelerate the bike (and pedaling backwards to reverse).
Unfortunately we had a little bit too much fun with it at the office, and the handlebar broke off from all that leaning.
The bloodlust you demonstrated *constantly* scares the living hell out of me.
A friend of mine built something similar for himself with a stationary racing bike. You could even steer with the handlebar. We used to play Need for Speed (the very first one) with it. You always were last in a race, but it was a lot of fun.
This was AWESOME and very fun! The fact that works was already surprising! Super COOL Nostalgia Nerd video.
What's NOT COOL is that floppy drive... Please! Can you change / fix it? ;-)
Finally, we have Retro-Zwift :) #gcn
Wow, this actually looks like a lot of fun. Did not expect that.
Surprisingly looks awesome. Nice!
Haha, bloodlust Nostalgia Nerd is the best thing I've seen all week.
For a moment when I saw the thumbnail I thought you were going to do a MS DOS exercise game on your modded Nintendo Wii. 😂
Now that I know what the videos about it seems like a cool idea ☺️
"eat my rubber" and "burning some dust" XD
This looks fun as hell! That's wonderful!
I played with one of these when they came out, at a local computer store. I had a LOT of fun with it. But, I couldn't get it, because it was way too expensive for a child. So I went to see if any are available today, and they're SOLD OUT GLOBALLY. THANKS. x_x
Enjoyed the Christmas Vacation quote there!
This definitely seems like it could be a fun way to exercise.... IF.... you had the room.
That USPS label may itself become collectible soon
Stop watching at 10:28, resume at 11:16
You know, its funny - before seeing this video I've been watching my mum cycling with Eurosport cycling competitions on the telly and was thinking to myself - what if you hook up a pair of magnets on the bike's pedals for cycle tracking and use that to sync them with, say, Google Street View navigation.
That way you could literally travel the world by bike without leaving your home.
This hardware actually led to an important scientific discovery 25 years ago. The fact that it actually works, and that Super Cycle 2020 isn't coming out anytime soon, proved conclusively, once and for all, that human beings prefer sitting on their butts doing nothing, while playing video games. Who could have guessed that outcome? Apparently, not the company who manufactured this, but at least it made for a very interesting RUclips video, some decades later.
Look up Zwift
Hahahaha that was funny watching you react to the game as you played lol. Thanks for sharing!
Aside from everything else - the keyboard's clicks make me weak at the knees.
Also, surely it would've been easier finding a 5 1/4" drive?
Or even finding the file dumped on the internet?
@@ChrisLeeW00 The driver for my 11-year old video card isn't listed anywhere. Why would the files from this fairly niche 30-year old product be?
Or just getting another 3.5" floppy drive.
@@Jablicek you'd be surprised what you can find on archive.com
@@retrogameon I'd be bloody surprised if it had that.
If this worked with Road Rash, it would have quite possibly changed the course of the universe.
Delightful when oddware works and works well!
Running in excess of 40mph!!! Good work... hahah, maybe due to the bike, but that is still fast for bike
I never heard of this...Back in the 80s, this would be cool...I'd give it a go.....essentially a modified Atari 'Pole Position' game.
thx for posting, just discovered your channel.
Reminds me of the DOOMcycle from, like, 2005, where someone wired up his exercise bike with the mouseball sensors so they were touching the axels on the pedals and mapped it to move forward and backwards. o.o
I just stick my exercise bike in front of the TV and watch POV bike rides from around the world, but this DOS based interaction is amazing for its time!
I reckon the ambulance driver had just done a terrible fart and the paramedic was desperately trying to waft it out the back
Fantastic video! i came into this thinking it looked like a great concept, (i mean even now home Gym equipment with similar features is rare, and the versions in actual gyms are a bit dull) but would probably be let down by the implementation, truth is we've seen enough "break the beam" type control systems to know they're rarely very functional but it actually seems to work really well with very little fiddling. In 1995 If someone had a bit of excercise equipment set up in their garage or spare room then i could see this being an effective upgrade to make that equipment seem a little more inviting especially if their PC (or maybe an old spare) already lived in this area too. It's not going to be as accurate as a properly configured piece of specialist hardware or even the Nintendo Lifecycle but it's still a really well done piece of kit, definitely going to want to get hold of one of these at some point.
You look like you had way too much fun with that.
You can modify a laptop computer or a mini flat screen and a micro form factor pc for mounting it in the stationary bcycle for make an easy permanent fit setup. I see potential for another video with that idea.
I have that same Get Fit, still in the box. I think I used it only once.
I've gained 20LBs since this all started. I need this!
Guess it's less hassle than attaching an accelerometer to the pedals and expecting it to function at all.
That legitimately looks fun
7:25 Nobody is going to talk about how the city in the background *IS ON FUCKING FIRE?*
Loving the Lockdown Locks Peter. 👌
9:06 Lived in the Great Basin desert pretty much my entire life (Reno, Nevada & SLC, Utah), and that's definitely not it chief haha. Those Saguro cacti mean it can literally only be one place. The Sonoran desert in Arizona & Mexico.
If they combined it with some Carmageddon-like action... that would be sooo fun!
I especially like how nostalgia nerd makes Ath-a-lete a three syllable word :)
That looks pretty cool and impressive, for especially 1995, the Wii Fit of it's day
Fitness Road Rash! All fitness equipment should have some gaming aspect to it. With Bluetooth and smartphones there's no ready why they shouldn't.
FANTASTIC!
This actually looks good fun.
I had a Tacx Fortius, a more modern version of this with 3D graphics or rolling video. This looks pretty fun actually. Believe me, the Fortius was a lot more faff.
All it needs is whips and chains and it's basically DOS road rash.
I kinda want to get one of these to see how it would work with my Rowing Machine. Of course I'd also need to buy a PC it works on, so probably a little prohibitively expensive.
Is there a semi modern day equivalent to this available for the PC? One that would work with a recumbent bike? Cause I do have a dedicated room for computers WITH a recumbent exercise bike nearby and a large wall mounted display in front of the bike. I'd love to be able to go all Road Rash while pedaling away on the bike! Something would pseudo RPG elements or unlockables/loot would be a lot more motivating than just watching TV or movies while I bike.
Now I WANT ONE!
Where did you buy the computer athlete. A quick look on ebay doesn't seem to show any results. I'd been interested in checking it out, I'm starting to expand my DOS collection and something like this would be perfect for me :P
Its like an exercise version of Road Rash. 😁 Peloton take note.
Looks like this thing gives you a decent workout! The graphics are quite good for what looks like EGA. Allthough I’d probably prefer cycling outdoors. I’m used to commute to work for 40 minutes on a bike, easy!
This looks awesome! 😂😂😂
You get more exercise setting the thing up!
this is cool,
i wonder if it would be possible to emulate it with raspberry pi (with dos-box), and and diy it with some buttons and ir sensor
Combine something like this with VR and motion controls. Perfection.
Okay, I found ONE on eBay after I clicked this video and had to buy it 8 minutes in.
Oh hey, new Squirrelmonkey video: Peloton in 1992
