Ah, Merci for the comment regarding age and style. Now in my 7th decade, I refuse to go matronly. When I see ladies my age in misfitted clothing or 1980's attire my sympathetic genes take over. Losing the zest for life, style and fashion is sadly becoming an American trend. When we were last in Paris, the husband remarked at how the older ladies were dressed in Chanel walking the puppies! Style is ageless. Passion for life keeps us young. Of course, an energetic puppy helps!
Being 86 , fashionable style is a problem. I ve always dressed as less is more. Classic simplicity is my style. Hair styling is pathetically worn, " combed with an egg beater...and dirty/ greasy, .

3rd time in Paris & my wallet recently got stolen at the metro. Tipp: don't wear anything too fancy. When buying a ticket don't pull out your wallet. Dress simple to avoid pickpockets. Less color during the winter. Only bring enough money for the day & leave the rest at your Airbnb or hotel. Make sure your handbags have a zipper & always be aware of your surroundings. Trust me Paris is not like how the media portrays it. Be careful. Yes the architecture is beautiful but there are so many scammers and thieves there especially at the tourist area. But if you know how to speak French they will likely leave you alone. I've lived at NYC & there are less pickpockets there compare to Paris.

DesignbyChesa As a parisienne it’s more about being aware than not wearing fancy stuff. Just don’t look confused, try to always appear to know where you are going, don’t wear a huge open bag or a backpack that you don’t pay attention to. The thing with American people too, is that you tend to stand out as you speak louder than the normal European tone. But apart from that I wear fancy clothes now and then and never had a any problem, you just need to be aware that pickpockets exist, so if you wear a totebag for ex, don’t let it hang mindlessly, put your arm on it and it’ll be fine! Paris is not as dangerous as you seem to think 😊
@@maellea8437 Everything you said was valid & also applies in every large metropolitan cities. But even if you're aware it's not guaranteed. The thieves there are professional, they do this for a living. My parisienne friend got her phone snatched a couple years ago lol. Being at the wrong place at the wrong time. I live in Switzerland & it's extremely safe compare to Paris but I do know not all France is dangerous. Yes I do agree Americans are loud but I love how open & friendly they are. They just need to tone it down a bit when in Europe.

I really appreciate that you picked up on the edginess. As a French woman I'd say it's always been there. I think the Parisian style that many internet sites are hyping and trying to recreate is basically the set of basics that indeed most Parisiennes I know own and wear (timeless jeans, breton stripes, ballet flats, knitwear, blacks and blues and whites, scarfs etc.). But that doesn't mean, obviously, that this is all that French women own and wear. I know so many Parisiennes who have been obsessed with London styles for decades, for instance (my mom was one of them in the 60s and 70s!). Nowadays many look to inspiration from Berlin. And many others do and always did just experiment on their own. The classic basics still count, but contrary to popular belief, they are not the end to Parisian style, and in my experience never have been. As for the multi-coloured straw bags like you have, you get them a lot more in the South, in the Pays Basque and the Béarn for instance. I personally love them for this, but then I spent quite a few years of my life living in Biarritz :-).

French here. I think that French people as a whole tend to have a healthier relationship with clothes and fashion than the rest of the world. In that sense, we're very much like Japanese people: The simpler the better. It is beginning to change though, young people are starting to get more and more original with their outfits thanks to social medias. French fashion is not about perfection or wowing anybody, it's about being your most confident self without having to put a lot of effort hence the use of neutral tones, light makeup, comfortable shoes, well cut clothes. In a nutshell, simple choices that will never go out of fashion. It's a mindset really You'll never see people wandering in their pyjamas in the supermarket though, you always have to look presentable no matter the hour. French people make a clear distinction between simple casual elegance and that trashy hobo looks many American like to wear on their day off. To finish I'd like to emphasize the fact that French people aren't the ones talking about their style days on end, we couldn't care less to be honest. The world has dated expectations of us and doesn't realize that France is a modern country who has much more to offer than romantic strolls along the Seine and makeup advices ;)
being a japanese living in Shanghai , I so agreed with you, simplicity classic good quality clothings never go dated and it last for many years to come. in china everything is such a waste ....cheap quick fashion that quality don't last and the whole nation is such a waste, they don't respect things and just treat everything like they are disposable and cheap , very sad.

It annoys the heck out of me when I see people wearing pajamas out in public, and it seems to be all ages, not just teenagers. That and Ugg boots. Soooo tired of Ugg boots.
From my experience, living abroad and all, they wear sneakers because of the amount of walking in the city, especially with the cobblestone. The totes are for carrying groceries and random things you may need! I used a backpack and I was totally fine, crossbodies are popular and practical, no idea how walking in converse or ballet flats could be practical though 😳

Paris is definitely the mother of fashion and the capital of elegance, beauty and style. Any other countries and designers of the worlds still can't even stand close to the French when we talk about fashion and clothing in general. Frankly speaking, France is where fashion was born, modernized and given to the rest of the world etc...
I get that part about not having an expiration date. I'm nearing 60 and I do not look it, nor do I feel it. I dress just as fashionable as I always have. I wear every new style and trend out there, except the mini skirt. Im over that one, unless my granddaughter dares me, Lol. ❤

A few months ago i tried on a converse, because it was a dream for me to have one.. And i have to say that they were so uncomfortable. And its the same with vans shoes too. They look cool but they arent comfy and they are pricey too..

I went to Paris about three years ago and I must say it was beautiful and a real dream come true. I was there at the end of winter and spotted a lot of ankle boots and wrap coats. I cant wait to return!
Partisian street style is ok to be honest I really thought I would see more eclectic colors and styles because Paris is after all the worlds fashion capital but instead I just saw a lot of people wearing jeans, T-shirts, Converse shoes and tote bags which IMO all came off to appear very basic fashion. I saw another video based on what New Yorkers were wearing and they are doing bold and bright colors, mixing different print patterns with each other that look amazing. Also they are layering their outer wear, wearing thrifted outfits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s that looked cool. They wore very relaxed and stylish leather shoes, boots, platform gym shoes and platform dress shoes. Their style catched my eye more than what people in Paris were wearing.
I'm only one woman shooting short clips on my iPhone. I tried my best to get as much as I could. Alas, my phone kept filling up. Also, wanted to respect that I was in Paris with my husband for our anniversary and not to shoot street style footage. I'd love to go back and capture more of what I saw.
the reason why in Paris you carry a tote bag is that you tend to wear a cross body bag because it's a trend and because it's safer. So you put your precious belongings in a cross body bag (and you constantly check that it is well closed, especially when you are in the subway) and then you use a canvas tote to carry other stuff that you could use during the day: a sweater, a scarf, a book, a bottle of water and so on. I have different canvas totes in different colors, so I can match them with my outfit
I heard here in YT about French lady saying that nobody wears tennis,just the Americans tourist, that they stand out,because of that,and baseball caps.I though it was BS,and ND I was right.I went to Paris in 1986,I don't remember what people was wearing, just me,because of my photos,I got jeans,converse,and did Tshirts,white, black and scarfs and Panama hats.I look really cool, and famous black square sunglasses.

Nevermind the Converse part, Converse are a classic sneaker in France just like in most countries where sneakers are a thing, I wore high top converse in high school and so did everyone else. The straw bag part was equally as infuriating, as if you would actually get "odd looks" in Paris for carrying a multicoloured straw bag... and yes tote bags have been a thing for yeaaaaaars. Okay so after watching this video I just want to bring some informations. As a Parisian I can say that in Paris we don't have only one look but a lot of different looks. I really like to see how people can wear what they want even it's fashion or not. Living in Paris doesn't mean you have to dress yourself like in a fashion show. You can see womens well dressed and the opposite but it's okay. Everyone has its own representation of fashion. Take care of yourself all 🙏 Greetings from Paris 🇨🇵
I live in Switzerland and I been to Paris 4 times I think they like to walked most of the time by using the comfortable shoes and tote bag is more comfortable you dont need to buy a bag in grocery! More power to you and good luck and have a great day

I’m from London and ALWAYS carry a canvas tote bag because you now obviously have to pay for a carrier bag in shops, so I use it for groceries, all my shopping etc! It’s probably the same in Paris!😊
I agree, I would think thay the canvas tote thing is more to do with having to pay for carrier bags and reducing plastic than an overall trend. It certainly what I do, but I never thought of it as an accessory, more of a practical thing. I'm in the UK too 😊
My city in Canada bans the use of disposable plastic bags so it's pretty much a common sense here to carry an extra canvas tote bag for some unexpected shopping.
The funny thing was that I saw a Miu Miu tote bag and several other "fancier" totes. And the women weren't carrying their hang bag and a tote. It was just the tote. I saw a lot of it in Chicago and New York when I lived there.
Yes, that is true that a lot ppl in Paris were conscious of that. But they had the recycled plastic carrier bags for their shopping in addition to tote bags. So interesting.
Straw bags or baskets are more Spanish than French. They are used in France and in other European countries a lot in the summer, yes, but they are ours. The same as espadrilles, which are widely used in other countries but in Spain they are mandatory. In fact, if you want to buy espadrilles, the best thing you can do is not to look at castañer but to put Valencian sandals on Amazon and change the country, I always buy very comfortable and cheap from the same workshop (I'll show you in the Facebook group). With regard to style, I am European, I have lived in several countries and I have traveled to many others (in fact, my father-in-law is French), and I agree that there is not much difference in dress from one country to another (it is that the brands, designs and others are the same). When so many women wear the same things, it is a lack of style. It's mere conformity and lack of imagination. Most other Europeans follow the same trend. The real style may still be found in Italy.

I just watched your first video about packing for Paris. Lol! I loved the idea of your 2 sisal bags, so I ordered 2 of them just now after viewing the video. I'd prefer to carry a sisal basket bag than a backpack. Here in California, everyone wears backpacks as purses. I am going to switch from carrying my backpack as a purse to one of the sisal bags I purchased. In California, bohemian straw bags work well. By the time I get to Paris and the French Riviera, I may change my mind. I also bought a foldable tote for shopping. It is not canvas.
Tote bags are big there because it’s practical. Most Parisians buy food for what they are eating that day n the stores don’t have plastic and paper bags. So they use it for shopping n since it rains a lot there a umbrella is a must to carry in their totes. Also a lot of Parisians like to got to cafe n just read a book, so they keep their book in their totes also.
Absolutely correct! I lived in Chicago for eight years and I used to tote bag almost every single day. It’s much less common in the city where I live now, which is quite small.

Parisians look stylish because they have Paris as a backdrop. Imagine any of them shuffling down the aisle behind a shopping cart at the Sav-a-Lot, and their glam suddenly disappears. It's all about location.

I totally get the shoe choices. I walk and AVERAGE of 12 hours while in Paris. One needs good shoes if one wants to visit Paris. Enjoy your visit there. I lived there for several years and have had wonderful moments of joy and fun and beauty overload... To me, the city is like " my living room". It just feels home walking on Bouleverd St Michel or going to the Jardin de Luxembourg. Just home.

Tennis shoes are trending worldwide! Parisians have always worn comfy shoes because it's a lifestyle thing. Most people walk, don't drive, so you needs to have comfy shoes. Lots of low heel boots in Winter. Also, unlike what you see on instagram, in the city, you always choose a bag that is secure with zippers and/or flaps. No backpacks or open bags. Pick pocketing is common on the subway. I think this obsession with "French style" is really a stereotype. My husband is French and we go to Paris all the time and I don't find them generally anymore stylish than anywhere else. Most people are regular and nothing fantastic, just like most of the world. There are stylish and not stylish people in every major city. Same as LA and NY.
I totally agree. I think the thing that draws us American's in, is that very niche style, i.e. Jane Birkin, Jeanne Damas, etc... This style is uniquely French, yet it is not representative on the whole.
That's true; women in Paris keep in touch with their feminine touch and seduction till the end or almost. I've been in Paris many times and living there and it's always amazing to see the style. But I'm going honest, it's not what it use to be. It's nice to be casual but I find in my last trip in 2018, that it went from casual to almost sloppy (is it the right word?) at times. I'm going there in january again, I can't wait. This being said, even though I' not «wowed» as much, women are more stylishover there than here in Montréal where I live.
I travel a bit and the thing that I see the most is.... your description. Sloppy. Very few look ‘put together’ anymore and it doesn’t matter where we go. I grew up in a different time and for me, I just can’t go out looking like a hot mess.
The Converse thing is so true though, and it doesn't only apply to Paris. People of (almost) all ages and genders wear them: children, students, people who are over 30 (or even older)... Definitely a French staple. Some other shoes, which aren't as popular as Converse, but are still seen on French people, would be Nike, New Balance or Stan Smith Adidas. I used to own two pairs of Converse which I wore throughout my school days and I've worn them till they had holes in them. Almost every kid walked in those. I haven't seen a single French person who hasn't owned a pair of Converse shoes at some point in their life, it's crazy lmao

after living in Europe, where cobble stone sidewalks are everywhere, I don't blame them for wearing sneakers. Some youtube bloggers were pushing the stiletto heel thing but it's so impractical to wear when you're walking everywhere like they do. You can also have a large tote with a small cross body bag so you don't get pick-pocketed.

I'm French and I have to say it; people hate ballet flats here, REALLY. If you have seen them here (Paris) there was in tourist feet or old people because true Frenchies don't wear them (or maybe for the cliché idk 🤷).. Flat ballets are a man repeller (in the bad way). I don't hate them personally but they're so out outdated (here) and I will not wear them (even if they are Miu Miu) 😁

Omg yes to this video ! I went to Paris 2 years ago. It was my first solo trip. My travel book said to NOT wear sneakers, that Parisians will look at me bad. And guess what everyone was wearing ? Especially the most Stylish girls ...yes sneakers ! Ugh . Converses, Nikes, Pumas, Lots of New Balance. I didn’t even pack a pair. I tried to buy a Converse pair but they were a $100 euros when back at home (Texas) it’s like $50. My knees were hurting so bad I went thrift shopping and found me a pair of pumas for $5 euros. Brianna, the straw bags we carry in Paris is "French" from province etc...but the one you have is one I had when I was a student and this is years/ decade ago..it's "African " style ..so there are different "straw style" bags ...as for trainers I hardly wear them except in summer and they are not the ones you mentioned but the classic superga ..they're great , good sole and stylish....and to wrap it up the way people dress / street style highly depends on the areas you're in ...age and occupation especially during the day
I love that! I knew mine were African (got them both at the thrift store) but I had seen Jeanne Damas wearing some similar a few years ago. Also, there is this great shot in the film "Annie Hall" where she's carrying one similar. I would love to get an authentic French one. Love Supergas and have a pair in black that I should have brought with me. Big fan of Veja's as well. A pair of those are next on my list.💖
I have a few of the African style bags, and use them a lot….I also have Superga sneakers, and find them to be extremely uncomfortable. I don’t believe I have ever seen another American wearing them. Perhaps I should have sized up - I could never wear them if I had a lot of walking to do.
I believe it was Chanel that started the sneaker trend as fashion accessory to pair with both high and low outfits a few years back, so it is fitting that Parisiennes are into them.
The canvas tote is becoming a bigger thing here in the states as well, now that plastic bags are banned. I have been carrying them for years when I go shopping, esp at flea markets or thrift stores. I don’t see them as a fashion statement, just a convenient bag that can easily be thrown in the washer when it gets dirty. Interesting at 2:35 we see Birkenstock Bostons. A French woman’s channel here on YT, she says French women would never wear Birkenstocks, too ugly!
Interestingly, Birkenstocks are becoming quite the fashion girl item. I think that classic French style tends to be more strict with what they allow themselves to wear out and about. I thought it was interesting that no matter what kind of tote someone was carrying, there was always some element of style to it especially that miu miu tote!
I went to Paris in 2014 and sneakers were everywhere then as well, so were Timberland boots. I saw mostly Jordans and trainers, but the older crowd wore low profile sneakers including Converse. I also saw lots of loafers/drivers from the older women. Working men wore brogues or cap toe shoes.
I adore european style but I also love new york street fashion. americans are more brave and creative. parisians are elegant. love it all. its the mixing of the 2 styles I really try for.

Whew! There are many changes since I was there during the mid-nineties doing my Graduate studies! Aside from my student-type wardrobe (I'm American) I wore the first year I was there, my wardrobe changed quite a bit to more subdued (though fashionable)colors and styles during 2 years that followed. I never wore sneakers as much as I had in the states (I never even saw them worn on more mature woman) and never shorts in the city. I was glad to see in your video at least one "older" woman wearing the ubiquitous scarf . Oh well, things change. :-(

I just came back from Paris . I stayed in st. Germaine de pres , rt around the corner from le bon Marche and I defined didn’t see any converse this year but I did see loads of multi color sneakers like avias, the more colors the better .. and they wore them with anything ..like a very formal dress with sneakers .. kinda strange but that’s what they weee wearing and also loads of faux furs everywhere!!
Nice video! I guess the tote bag is just the easiest way to carry all the stuff you can’t put in your tiny cross body bag (bottle, computer, papers...). The small, zip closed, cross-body bag is indeed a must because it is safer but also easy to carry and light, which is great when you are walking a lot. (It’s also way better to have this tote bag + small cross-body combo when the metro is absolutely stuffed with people, rather than a bigger bag).
Great style that stresses basics. Would love to visit Paris. It is true that simplicity is a key. Basic color andpops of color are great. I love jeans for casual and blazers but really prefer long cardigans with jeans for the street and blazers for the office.

In the US, in what city could you be wearing that bag any time other than summer and have it seem normal? The US is so vastly different where style is concerned. I've noticed that here on the Northern East coast we have a totally different style than out on the West Coast and definitely than in the middle states. I would never be caught wearing a straw bag outside of the Summer months and I'm in DC.
I’m from SoCal and many people wear straw bags all year around, Especially at the beach. But the younger girls really set on being trendy wear it more in the spring and summer, especially the small round straw bags that have been very popular for the past couple of spring seasons.
Europe in general is dressing more casual. I used to live and work in Germany and it was all suits back then. We used to say no sneakers in Europe, but that has changed with the younger generations. But that being said, even the older generations don’t give up on themselves and have a sense of pride how they look when exiting the house. In USA nobody cares except Orange County 😂
I'm Mexican and I think the parisians looks very well with any clothes they wear, because their body is beautiful and tall, your body is elegant and you don't need to work hard to look well.
What are you missing? What am I missing? I stumbled on your video and decided to watch it. Now, I don't mean to offend you or any French who may see this, but I can't for the life of me understand why you all think "Paris Street Style" is so chic. I watched twice, in fact, and saw nothing but a bunch of young people in rumpled, wrinkled, and oversized clothes. Just like young people everywhere. The only ones who looked sharp at all were the three mature women (like the one in the blue blazer). What makes the dirty Converse shoes the French wear any more chic than the ones Americans (or anyone else) wear? And those weren't chic ballet flats that girl was wearing - they were a mix between MaryJanes, strappy sandals, and huaraches. Someone in this comment section said that most Americans dressed frumpily. Maybe so. But you're certainly not going to convince me on the (non) evidence from this video that the French dress any better. Frankly, I'm a little weary of seeing constant articles about how French women live and dress. I'm not impressed.
French here. I think that French people as a whole tend to have a healthier relationship with clothes and fashion than the rest of the world. In that sense, we're very much like Japanese people: The simpler the better. It is beginning to change though, young people are starting to get more and more original with their outfits thanks to social medias. French fashion is not about perfection or wowing anybody, it's about being your most confident self without having to put a lot of effort hence the use of neutral tones, light makeup, comfortable shoes, well cut clothes. In a nutshell, simple choices that will never go out of fashion. It's a mindset really You'll never see people wandering in their pyjamas in the supermarket though, you always have to look presentable no matter the hour. French people make a clear distinction between simple casual elegance and that trashy hobo looks many American like to wear on their day off. To finish I'd like to emphasize the fact that French people aren't the ones talking about their style days on end, we couldn't care less to be honest. The world has dated expectations of us and doesn't realize that France is a modern country who has much more to offer than romantic strolls along the Seine and makeup advices ;)

I am attracted to some aspects of French style but I certainly wouldn' t go out and buy a fabric carrier bag instead of the dressier bags I have hand picked and accumulated after much thought and admiration. I think French fashion has become more casualised over the years and cloth bags in particular don't look nice to me! (except in the rarest of circumstances!)
It's interesting hearing this. People always say you will never catch a French person wearing tennis shoes or a t-shirt. Jeans are said to be worn only on occasion and dressed up. I see for the most part that none of these are really true. They seem to dress American with a European twist :D .

Ah, Merci for the comment regarding age and style. Now in my 7th decade, I refuse to go matronly. When I see ladies my age in misfitted clothing or 1980's attire my sympathetic genes take over. Losing the zest for life, style and fashion is sadly becoming an American trend. When we were last in Paris, the husband remarked at how the older ladies were dressed in Chanel walking the puppies! Style is ageless. Passion for life keeps us young. Of course, an energetic puppy helps!

Tipp: don't wear anything too fancy. When buying a ticket don't pull out your wallet. Dress simple to avoid pickpockets.

Only bring enough money for the day & leave the rest at your Airbnb or hotel. Make sure your handbags have a zipper & always be aware of your surroundings.
Trust me Paris is not like how the media portrays it. Be careful. Yes the architecture is beautiful but there are so many scammers and thieves there especially at the tourist area. But if you know how to speak French they will likely leave you alone.
I've lived at NYC & there are less pickpockets there compare to Paris.

Just don’t look confused, try to always appear to know where you are going, don’t wear a huge open bag or a backpack that you don’t pay attention to. The thing with American people too, is that you tend to stand out as you speak louder than the normal European tone.
But apart from that I wear fancy clothes now and then and never had a any problem, you just need to be aware that pickpockets exist, so if you wear a totebag for ex, don’t let it hang mindlessly, put your arm on it and it’ll be fine!

I really appreciate that you picked up on the edginess. As a French woman I'd say it's always been there. I think the Parisian style that many internet sites are hyping and trying to recreate is basically the set of basics that indeed most Parisiennes I know own and wear (timeless jeans, breton stripes, ballet flats, knitwear, blacks and blues and whites, scarfs etc.). But that doesn't mean, obviously, that this is all that French women own and wear. I know so many Parisiennes who have been obsessed with London styles for decades, for instance (my mom was one of them in the 60s and 70s!). Nowadays many look to inspiration from Berlin. And many others do and always did just experiment on their own. The classic basics still count, but contrary to popular belief, they are not the end to Parisian style, and in my experience never have been. As for the multi-coloured straw bags like you have, you get them a lot more in the South, in the Pays Basque and the Béarn for instance. I personally love them for this, but then I spent quite a few years of my life living in Biarritz :-).

being a japanese living in Shanghai , I so agreed with you, simplicity classic good quality clothings never go dated and it last for many years to come. in china everything is such a waste ....cheap quick fashion that quality don't last and the whole nation is such a waste, they don't respect things and just treat everything like they are disposable and cheap , very sad.

From my experience, living abroad and all, they wear sneakers because of the amount of walking in the city, especially with the cobblestone. The totes are for carrying groceries and random things you may need! I used a backpack and I was totally fine, crossbodies are popular and practical, no idea how walking in converse or ballet flats could be practical though 😳

I went to Paris about three years ago and I must say it was beautiful and a real dream come true. I was there at the end of winter and spotted a lot of ankle boots and wrap coats. I cant wait to return!

Partisian street style is ok to be honest I really thought I would see more eclectic colors and styles because Paris is after all the worlds fashion capital but instead I just saw a lot of people wearing jeans, T-shirts, Converse shoes and tote bags which IMO all came off to appear very basic fashion. I saw another video based on what New Yorkers were wearing and they are doing bold and bright colors, mixing different print patterns with each other that look amazing. Also they are layering their outer wear, wearing thrifted outfits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s that looked cool. They wore very relaxed and stylish leather shoes, boots, platform gym shoes and platform dress shoes. Their style catched my eye more than what people in Paris were wearing.

I'm only one woman shooting short clips on my iPhone. I tried my best to get as much as I could. Alas, my phone kept filling up. Also, wanted to respect that I was in Paris with my husband for our anniversary and not to shoot street style footage. I'd love to go back and capture more of what I saw.

the reason why in Paris you carry a tote bag is that you tend to wear a cross body bag because it's a trend and because it's safer. So you put your precious belongings in a cross body bag (and you constantly check that it is well closed, especially when you are in the subway) and then you use a canvas tote to carry other stuff that you could use during the day: a sweater, a scarf, a book, a bottle of water and so on. I have different canvas totes in different colors, so I can match them with my outfit

As a Parisian I can say that in Paris we don't have only one look but a lot of different looks.
I really like to see how people can wear what they want even it's fashion or not. Living in Paris doesn't mean you have to dress yourself like in a fashion show.
You can see womens well dressed and the opposite but it's okay. Everyone has its own representation of fashion.

I agree, I would think thay the canvas tote thing is more to do with having to pay for carrier bags and reducing plastic than an overall trend. It certainly what I do, but I never thought of it as an accessory, more of a practical thing. I'm in the UK too 😊
My city in Canada bans the use of disposable plastic bags so it's pretty much a common sense here to carry an extra canvas tote bag for some unexpected shopping.
That makes a lot of sense. It's still fascinating to me. Many women didn't have formal handbags, but were wearing the tote bag. I loved it!
The funny thing was that I saw a Miu Miu tote bag and several other "fancier" totes. And the women weren't carrying their hang bag and a tote. It was just the tote. I saw a lot of it in Chicago and New York when I lived there.

Straw bags or baskets are more Spanish than French. They are used in France and in other European countries a lot in the summer, yes, but they are ours. The same as espadrilles, which are widely used in other countries but in Spain they are mandatory. In fact, if you want to buy espadrilles, the best thing you can do is not to look at castañer but to put Valencian sandals on Amazon and change the country, I always buy very comfortable and cheap from the same workshop (I'll show you in the Facebook group). With regard to style, I am European, I have lived in several countries and I have traveled to many others (in fact, my father-in-law is French), and I agree that there is not much difference in dress from one country to another (it is that the brands, designs and others are the same). Ballet flats don’t work for everyone.I cannot stand them.I tried so many different pairs and they were all so uncomfortable for me 😟
When so many women wear the same things, it is a lack of style. It's mere conformity and lack of imagination. Most other Europeans follow the same trend. The real style may still be found in Italy.
I have also thought that. A lot of boring conformity. But I enjoyed Brianna’s video and hearing about her experiences.

I just watched your first video about packing for Paris. Lol! I loved the idea of your 2 sisal bags, so I ordered 2 of them just now after viewing the video. I'd prefer to carry a sisal basket bag than a backpack. Here in California, everyone wears backpacks as purses. I am going to switch from carrying my backpack as a purse to one of the sisal bags I purchased. In California, bohemian straw bags work well. By the time I get to Paris and the French Riviera, I may change my mind. I also bought a foldable tote for shopping. It is not canvas.

Tote bags are big there because it’s practical. Most Parisians buy food for what they are eating that day n the stores don’t have plastic and paper bags. So they use it for shopping n since it rains a lot there a umbrella is a must to carry in their totes. Also a lot of Parisians like to got to cafe n just read a book, so they keep their book in their totes also.
Absolutely correct! I lived in Chicago for eight years and I used to tote bag almost every single day. It’s much less common in the city where I live now, which is quite small.

I totally get the shoe choices. I walk and AVERAGE of 12 hours while in Paris. One needs good shoes if one wants to visit Paris. Enjoy your visit there. I lived there for several years and have had wonderful moments of joy and fun and beauty overload... To me, the city is like " my living room". It just feels home walking on Bouleverd St Michel or going to the Jardin de Luxembourg. Just home.

I haven't been to Paris yet, but last year I traveled to charming Lille and was impressed with the style and way of life of the French, even in a small city you feel the popular "je ne sais quoi". It was the end of summer and something I noticed is that many were wearing trench coats and also espadrilles and tennis shoes. It also caught my attention to see some women wearing jumpsuits.

Tennis shoes are trending worldwide! Parisians have always worn comfy shoes because it's a lifestyle thing. Most people walk, don't drive, so you needs to have comfy shoes. Lots of low heel boots in Winter. Also, unlike what you see on instagram, in the city, you always choose a bag that is secure with zippers and/or flaps. No backpacks or open bags. Pick pocketing is common on the subway. I think this obsession with "French style" is really a stereotype. My husband is French and we go to Paris all the time and I don't find them generally anymore stylish than anywhere else. Most people are regular and nothing fantastic, just like most of the world. There are stylish and not stylish people in every major city. Same as LA and NY.
I totally agree. I think the thing that draws us American's in, is that very niche style, i.e. Jane Birkin, Jeanne Damas, etc... This style is uniquely French, yet it is not representative on the whole.

That's true; women in Paris keep in touch with their feminine touch and seduction till the end or almost. I've been in Paris many times and living there and it's always amazing to see the style. But I'm going honest, it's not what it use to be. It's nice to be casual but I find in my last trip in 2018, that it went from casual to almost sloppy (is it the right word?) at times. I'm going there in january again, I can't wait. This being said, even though I' not «wowed» as much, women are more stylishover there than here in Montréal where I live.
I travel a bit and the thing that I see the most is.... your description. Sloppy. Very few look ‘put together’ anymore and it doesn’t matter where we go. I grew up in a different time and for me, I just can’t go out looking like a hot mess.

The Converse thing is so true though, and it doesn't only apply to Paris. People of (almost) all ages and genders wear them: children, students, people who are over 30 (or even older)... Definitely a French staple. Some other shoes, which aren't as popular as Converse, but are still seen on French people, would be Nike, New Balance or Stan Smith Adidas.
I used to own two pairs of Converse which I wore throughout my school days and I've worn them till they had holes in them. Almost every kid walked in those. I haven't seen a single French person who hasn't owned a pair of Converse shoes at some point in their life, it's crazy lmao

after living in Europe, where cobble stone sidewalks are everywhere, I don't blame them for wearing sneakers. Some youtube bloggers were pushing the stiletto heel thing but it's so impractical to wear when you're walking everywhere like they do. You can also have a large tote with a small cross body bag so you don't get pick-pocketed.

I’ve been living in Paris for 8 years now, and yes, you are right.... there is a trend of white sneakers going around, and canvas bags (mostly because you get free ones at many stores when you make a purchase) and ballet flats are still a must come mid seasons.

Some of them are so rude, unsolicited and just downright mean. If you have seen them here (Paris) there was in tourist feet or old people because true Frenchies don't wear them (or maybe for the cliché idk 🤷).. Flat ballets are a man repeller (in the bad way). I don't hate them personally but they're so out outdated (here) and I will not wear them (even if they are Miu Miu) 😁

Omg yes to this video ! I went to Paris 2 years ago. It was my first solo trip. My travel book said to NOT wear sneakers, that Parisians will look at me bad. And guess what everyone was wearing ? Especially the most Stylish girls ...yes sneakers ! Ugh . Converses, Nikes, Pumas, Lots of New Balance. I didn’t even pack a pair. I tried to buy a Converse pair but they were a $100 euros when back at home (Texas) it’s like $50. My knees were hurting so bad I went thrift shopping and found me a pair of pumas for $5 euros. Brianna, the straw bags we carry in Paris is "French" from province etc...but the one you have is one I had when I was a student and this is years/ decade ago..it's "African " style ..so there are different "straw style" bags ...as for trainers I hardly wear them except in summer and they are not the ones you mentioned but the classic superga ..they're great , good sole and stylish....and to wrap it up the way people dress / street style highly depends on the areas you're in ...age and occupation especially during the day
I love that! I knew mine were African (got them both at the thrift store) but I had seen Jeanne Damas wearing some similar a few years ago. Also, there is this great shot in the film "Annie Hall" where she's carrying one similar. I would love to get an authentic French one. Love Supergas and have a pair in black that I should have brought with me. Big fan of Veja's as well. A pair of those are next on my list.💖
I have a few of the African style bags, and use them a lot….I also have Superga sneakers, and find them to be extremely uncomfortable. I don’t believe I have ever seen another American wearing them. Perhaps I should have sized up - I could never wear them if I had a lot of walking to do.
I believe it was Chanel that started the sneaker trend as fashion accessory to pair with both high and low outfits a few years back, so it is fitting that Parisiennes are into them.

The canvas tote is becoming a bigger thing here in the states as well, now that plastic bags are banned. I have been carrying them for years when I go shopping, esp at flea markets or thrift stores. I don’t see them as a fashion statement, just a convenient bag that can easily be thrown in the washer when it gets dirty.
Interesting at 2:35 we see Birkenstock Bostons. A French woman’s channel here on YT, she says French women would never wear Birkenstocks, too ugly!
Interestingly, Birkenstocks are becoming quite the fashion girl item. I think that classic French style tends to be more strict with what they allow themselves to wear out and about.
I thought it was interesting that no matter what kind of tote someone was carrying, there was always some element of style to it especially that miu miu tote!
I went to Paris in 2014 and sneakers were everywhere then as well, so were Timberland boots. I saw mostly Jordans and trainers, but the older crowd wore low profile sneakers including Converse. I also saw lots of loafers/drivers from the older women. Working men wore brogues or cap toe shoes.

I love this question. First, let me say that I never, ever, never thought this video would get the views that it has. So I never thought that it would offend some people that I recorded strangers. When taking shots, my thinking was, "Well, I'll share these with my friends on RUclips". It never occurred to me that it would be controversial to some.

I use my iPhone 6S Plus for all my videos and photography. I'm hoping to get a new camera soon. My background is in photography and approaching people was very easy for me. I think because I was discrete and was using my iPhone, no seemed to mind or even notice I was taking their photo.
Think of it like documenting something that you appreciate and that might never be there again. My intention in taking street style photos was to celebrate Parisian style and capture it for posterity.

Whew! There are many changes since I was there during the mid-nineties doing my Graduate studies! Aside from my student-type wardrobe (I'm American) I wore the first year I was there, my wardrobe changed quite a bit to more subdued (though fashionable)colors and styles during 2 years that followed. I never wore sneakers as much as I had in the states (I never even saw them worn on more mature woman) and never shorts in the city. I was glad to see in your video at least one "older" woman wearing the ubiquitous scarf . Oh well, things change. :-(

I just came back from Paris . I stayed in st. Germaine de pres , rt around the corner from le bon Marche and I defined didn’t see any converse this year but I did see loads of multi color sneakers like avias, the more colors the better .. and they wore them with anything ..like a very formal dress with sneakers .. kinda strange but that’s what they weee wearing and also loads of faux furs everywhere!!

Nice video! I guess the tote bag is just the easiest way to carry all the stuff you can’t put in your tiny cross body bag (bottle, computer, papers...). The small, zip closed, cross-body bag is indeed a must because it is safer but also easy to carry and light, which is great when you are walking a lot. (It’s also way better to have this tote bag + small cross-body combo when the metro is absolutely stuffed with people, rather than a bigger bag).

Great style that stresses basics. Would love to visit Paris. It is true that simplicity is a key. Basic color andpops of color are great. I love jeans for casual and blazers but really prefer long cardigans with jeans for the street and blazers for the office.

In the US, in what city could you be wearing that bag any time other than summer and have it seem normal? The US is so vastly different where style is concerned. I've noticed that here on the Northern East coast we have a totally different style than out on the West Coast and definitely than in the middle states. I would never be caught wearing a straw bag outside of the Summer months and I'm in DC.
I’m from SoCal and many people wear straw bags all year around, Especially at the beach. But the younger girls really set on being trendy wear it more in the spring and summer, especially the small round straw bags that have been very popular for the past couple of spring seasons.
Europe in general is dressing more casual. I used to live and work in Germany and it was all suits back then. We used to say no sneakers in Europe, but that has changed with the younger generations. But that being said, even the older generations don’t give up on themselves and have a sense of pride how they look when exiting the house. In USA nobody cares except Orange County 😂

I'm Mexican and I think the parisians looks very well with any clothes they wear, because their body is beautiful and tall, your body is elegant and you don't need to work hard to look well.

They are what we call sneakers. The phrase "tennis shoe" is interchangeable with "sneaker" in the US.
What are you missing? What am I missing? I stumbled on your video and decided to watch it. Now, I don't mean to offend you or any French who may see this, but I can't for the life of me understand why you all think "Paris Street Style" is so chic. I watched twice, in fact, and saw nothing but a bunch of young people in rumpled, wrinkled, and oversized clothes. Just like young people everywhere. The only ones who looked sharp at all were the three mature women (like the one in the blue blazer). What makes the dirty Converse shoes the French wear any more chic than the ones Americans (or anyone else) wear? And those weren't chic ballet flats that girl was wearing - they were a mix between MaryJanes, strappy sandals, and huaraches. Someone in this comment section said that most Americans dressed frumpily. Maybe so. But you're certainly not going to convince me on the (non) evidence from this video that the French dress any better. Frankly, I'm a little weary of seeing constant articles about how French women live and dress. I'm not impressed.
French here. I think that French people as a whole tend to have a healthier relationship with clothes and fashion than the rest of the world. In that sense, we're very much like Japanese people: The simpler the better. It is beginning to change though, young people are starting to get more and more original with their outfits thanks to social medias.
French fashion is not about perfection or wowing anybody, it's about being your most confident self without having to put a lot of effort hence the use of neutral tones, light makeup, comfortable shoes, well cut clothes. In a nutshell, simple choices that will never go out of fashion. It's a mindset really
You'll never see people wandering in their pyjamas in the supermarket though, you always have to look presentable no matter the hour.
French people make a clear distinction between simple casual elegance and that trashy hobo looks many American like to wear on their day off.
To finish I'd like to emphasize the fact that French people aren't the ones talking about their style days on end, we couldn't care less to be honest. The world has dated expectations of us and doesn't realize that France is a modern country who has much more to offer than romantic strolls along the Seine and makeup advices ;)

I am attracted to some aspects of French style but I certainly wouldn' t go out and buy a fabric carrier bag instead of the dressier bags I have hand picked and accumulated after much thought and admiration. I think French fashion has become more casualised over the years and cloth bags in particular don't look nice to me! (except in the rarest of circumstances!)

It's interesting hearing this. People always say you will never catch a French person wearing tennis shoes or a t-shirt. Jeans are said to be worn only on occasion and dressed up. I see for the most part that none of these are really true. They seem to dress American with a European twist :D .
