Dion thanks for including Hakeem Bilal in your podcasts! I attended high school in Montgomery County, Maryland and began trombone lessons in 9th grade. Hakeem's journey inspires me to keep working to get better! Thanks to both of you!
@@TheChopsShop You're right on both accounts. This could be considered a mental illness and needs to be addressed. Especially when you look at the countering organizations whose motive is to reinforce this. And we don't have and/or we do not on a world wide scale teach a countering strategy. Not just in the musical field but in just about all other areas. Even today! And Dubois addressed this way back yonder in his book The Souls of Black Folk where he talks about Dual Consciousness. You know this, of course. This is why I'm glad that you hold these discussions and that you stick to it and you don't waver. Great job😀
Duport!!! What’s up my brother. Great to hear from you. It was great to hear about your influence on Hakeem. Keep spreading the knowledge, I hope you and the wife and well.
@@TheChopsShop I am well and really enjoying the series. Your pedagogical approach has been an inspiration.I use many of the same techniques with my students and to improve my own playing. I will keep trying to mild young minds and I will be in touch about maybe scheduling a one in one session with your. Peace

46:25, I would have said, you're welcome. We spend so much time trying to ignore our blackness and are embarrassed when someone else notices it.
It’s something we’ve been taught to not embrace. Sometimes it’s hard to undo the programming but it’s an essential step to liberation.

Americans of African decent should review Dr. Ivan Van Sertima's "The African Presence in Early Europe" and Dr. Edward Scobie.
I haven’t read that book yet but I’m a fan of Ivan Van Sertima’s work. The books and information he shares are extremely important.
No relation to Hank or William?
I’m not sure about that.
No relation but I am an admirer of their playing! The Bilal name is strong with the trombone
