I just bought my pathfinder a few weeks ago and it's got 4x4, ironically I've driven a stick for the last nine years and miss it horribly but I've never had a 4 x 4 so your video is exactly what my pathfinder is.. it's a 2001 with 4 x 4 and now i totally get it ..thx 😁
Thanks bro! Typically you go left or right not down. I looked underneath for rusty linkage and it was clean as a whistle lol. All I was missing was push down. I just bought an 04 and I did test 4H which worked so easy... when N or 4L didn’t work I thought it would be rusty linkage like my cherokee was. I like the pathfinder more and more over my XJ as I learn mow about it.
Edgar Acosta de dios not necessarily true, it’s mainly a good idea if your 4x4 system is manually operated, where as electronically actuated it’s more of a shift on the fly kinda deal since their operated by vaccum
on pathfinders as long as youre under a certain speed and not turning unless you absolutely have to then you can go 2h to 4h and no problems but 4h to 4l you cannot. same thing 4h to 2h on a pathfinder just cant go a certain speed in 4h period.
Very helpful video. Just got myself a 1998 Pathfinder and was grinding when trying to change between 4H and 4L. Transfer case fluid changed and off to test now I know I was doing the correct actions. Looks like I'll be watching the others after :D
@@GomerfromIsaan Cheers man, I did the change from this video and worked a treat. First few times the grind slowly eased off and then it continued for many months driving in the outback of Australia before being sold off to a lovely Aboriginal guy :D Great car that will drive forever
in any vehicle with 4h you can engage it while youre moving but you only want to put it in that mode if gonig in a straight line and all wheels moving at the same speed or on a complete stop and never going highway speed. 4L you seriously want to only engage in a dead stop and on sand deep snow and mud.
Just got stuck in the snow for 3 hours because of this. Just bought the truck as a wheeler here in Oregon and yeah I'm not sure I got the right deal lol
@@BigStubber I live down here in Florida, I run trails in the woods and stuff in my truck. She will get out of the mud in 4H but I tried 4L and it would not shift down to 4L! It sucks but i think it is as simple as a shifter cable.
Hi I have a 2001 Nissan Xterra and looks like the same as you pathfinder but I have an issue. When I’m driving on 2H and make a turn my front wheels feels like they’re lock even when nothing appears on the dash, already place 4H and 4L and I can hear when clic in and out but no idea what could be wrong any ideas or suggestions? Could be a transfer case switch not working right ?
not necessarily. yes its an open diff but if you engage it in snow and front wheels are not spinning as fast as rear already like on road then you could mash a gear in the tcase. but otherwise you are right
Hey Nice video I'm going to subscribe to your channel because I have the same car that you have and I might have some issues so I'm going to ask you some questions

Thanks man I was “stuck” in 4h and couldn’t figure out L because I didn’t know to press down. You’re a big help man 👍🏼🤙🏼
Same lol. It’s like putting vw bug in “R”
I just bought a 2001 Xterra 4wd and this was helpful as it did not come with a owner's manual to check. It works the same exact way.
240sxterra same exact Powertrain

Just bought a 95 Pathfinder SE and this video was helpful, thanks man!
Frankie L 95 and below were known as the hardbodies 96 and up was the R50 series. The manual is straight forward.
Frankie L congrats their very reliable vehicles if you treat them right.
@@JLGARAGE252 R50 has a series 1 & 2, series 2 has a dial on the dashboard to select 2wd, auto, 4hi & 4lo. Not sure what the series 1 has.
Any 4x4 it's best advise to always put your veichle on neutral and then engage 4h or 4l or 2h if not you will mes up you tcase

InvitationToAdventure yeah when going to 4L it’s a quick depress of the transfer case stick down into neutral and back to 4L
I just test drove one today and got a little grind when going in and out of 4-Low. Maybe changing transfer case oil would help.

Appreciate the video very helpful
2002 pathfinder 5 speed manual.
My 4wd shifter in my 2001 nissan pathfinder LE V6 3.5 L does not go down to 4L only 4H and 2H, Even in natural with all force pushing down on it.

Should I be pushing down on the brakes when switching between 2h-to 4h to N to 4l?
If your sitting on in incline or anything that is NOT level ground I certainly would.
what would i change it to when going up hills and starts to slow down or should i just change the gear to 2 or 1

What if I’m stuck in 4 High on a QX4? It had the automatic 4WD, so I don’t know what to do.
My car looks exactly the same as yours except it's a different color do you know somewhere I can get a owner's manual
For normal driving should the 4x4 selector be on N or 2H?
2H which means the vehicle is not in 4x4, if you’re using the 4x4 then you can use 4H or 4L
THE PATHFINDER DOESNT COME WITH LOCKING DIFFS ITS 4X4 WITH OPEN DIFFS YOU CAN TURN NO PROBLEM.
AND 4 LOW DOESNT GIVE YOU MORE TORQUE OR HORSPOWER IT MERELY REDUCES THE GEAR RATIO .
I GOT A USEFUL SCREENSHOT FROM THE MANUAL AT 4:00 SO THANKS !
el f1del I making a reference towards a true 4x4 system, r50 series and most Nissan 4x4 powertrains are LSD setups
not necessarily. yes its an open diff but if you engage it in snow and front wheels are not spinning as fast as rear already like on road then you could mash a gear in the tcase. but otherwise you are right
Shouldn't the light be off after it's back in 2h?
When you go into 4L and you say push down, are you pushing down on the brake pedal?
No, if it’s an automatic, simply put it in neutral and shift the 4x4 mode. Apply brakes if you’re on any sort of incline.
Where can I find a Nissan Pathfinder 1996 owners manual I haven't been able to find one
Ebay, or you can go directly to a Nissan Dealer and speak with the Part Dept.
Hello,my pathfinder 1998 problems transmission, what to do,he pushes
Good
Hi, can i leave in "auto" mode all time ?!
What is the neutral for on the 4WD shifter
Don't you have to step on the Brake before shifting the 4WD shifter?
No, shift into 4hi then the transmission has to be in neutral to put the transfer case in 4Lo
So you don't have to press the brakes to shit between 2h and 4h. Neutral for 4l
Whats the use of that small button on the gear shift??
Faris Al rasheed that is for overdrive
Wraith1998 , can u please tell me when to use it and when not to, and can we use that button while 4wheel driving ??
Faris Al rasheed use it on road under normal driving conditions, and turn it off when you’re driving off road
Wraith1998 thanks mate

Alright man I'm a Nissan service technician so I have first hand info to the 96-2004 Pathfinders
@@JLGARAGE252 yes indeed bro
So I don't have to put it in neutral first to put it 4h?
gphillimo only when you’re going to 4L
i mean you can if you want to just for ease of mind but no you do not otherwise
As single independent woman this was so helpful 😬
If anyone can help me i really appreciate it.
I have a 93 Hardbody Automatic 4x4 and when I shift between modes it freaking grinds
4hi to 4lo requires the transmission itself to be in neutral
Me too! Did you solve the problem?
Yea, you have to depress the stick real hard with the trans in Burt ram then shift the transfer case to 4Lo push it in the pull down
I broke my differential by putting the lever to N and driving on the Highway. I should have read the manual first.
When you just driving what gear you drove on
But we're Nissan buddys now
Count on it.
How to remove 4wd
Mine won't go all the way up
Linkage issue
hi sir, can you please give me a copy of manual on how to shift on 4x4 modes. thank you!
Ok I am officially confused as hell 😂
