So this might sound like a forceful jamming of music that I happen to like into this discussion, and it very much is, but I found this theme of evolving social dynamics/consciousness under capitalism well presented in the lyrics of the song Without Prejudice by Protest the Hero, particularly as it relates to that "evil" part and its inevitable ideological reification, so I'm just going to unabashedly copy/paste the lyrics: _Wealth is a sick man’s game_ _Those who have it and those who hunger for it_ _To the victor go the spoils of fame-_ _Those who seek it, and those who abhor it_ _Evil is a very real concept_ _Boiling in the bellies of the graceful_ _Toiling in the fortress in their complex_ _To our employers we are faithful_ _A number arises and there’s a spark in the eye_ _Obscuring the vision, clouding the mind_ _“I am the authority on who deserves what_ _To continue your prosperity, you’ve gotta pay a little cut_ _We’ll be ruthless and cutthroat and get what we deserve_ _We’ll remove each tooth from each swollen mouth and finger at the nerve.”_ _When a hand makes a fist, sometimes knuckles crack and break_ _When that fist strikes the ground, the plates will shift, the Earth will shake_ _Knuckle bones now exposed-true intention, self serving goals_ _Bank accounts that tell of rape. The plates will shift, the Earth will shake_ _Evil is a very real concept_ _Dancing in the diner to your upset_ _Sharing drinks and laughing through their teeth_ _Their only success is our defeat_ _So drape yourself in the finest velvets, cape, mask, and tights_ _And jump from the closest, tallest building and reach new heights_ _Revel in the adoration you acquire_ _Dive into the altruism you inspire_ _Then sit back and pour a drink, relax_ _Cause no one sees the other half_ _The same qualities that you despise_ _Are the qualities you personify_ _So dig deep and find your buried heart_ _I know it’s in there somewhere_ _Acquisition isn’t all there is_ _And no one’s too broken they can’t be repaired_ _Revisions of histories et al. abound_ It flatters me now. It flatters me now… _”Hey spin that song back, it’s my favourite_ _It flatters me now. It flatters me now.”_ Also RIP Michael Brooks.

Thx for this great analysis. What would be the important evolutions needed in the labour market that we should push for ? It seems to me, that until we reach a planned and communal organization of labour allocation, capitalism will always generate a competitive and immoral labour market. Are there experiences in some countries that make the labour market more humane ? thx
Excellent presentation. What happens when the consumer market collapses and cannot anymore provide for the household "family values" demand? In my experience, the demographic pyramid collapses: people stop having children altogether (or nearly so) and generational renewal is not achieved anymore, the system then imports more and mor immigrants from other less developed (more rural, family-oriented) regions increasing potentially the inter-groupd tensions within the proletariat, what seems a win-win situation for Capitalism, producing a "colonial" society fragmented along many ethno-religious lines, all at the service of Capital. Next what? Because next is already here and we're possibly facing human extinction and we need a cohesive collective subject to cause change. Now what?
22:15 I thought I was the only one who thought this, thinking about my experience in fast food. I FUCKING KNEW IT, TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF CLASS CHARACTER IS REAL. TIP CULTURE IS COUNTER REVOLUTIONARY. Where can I find this in Marx's writing?
29:00 / 35:31 Start to negotiate? (with who) Decent wages, decent social security? (With politicians, their first, and only love is money? You got to be kidding.) Ain't gonna happen with capitalism folks. No matter how much they B.S. you.
Good lecture Professor Harvey! When you mention the company store my mind goes to scenes from "The Molly Maguries" where they deduct the workers tools from their wages. One of the problems I see stems from human nature, where when I work I want top union wages but when I shop I will pick the cheaper non-union products.
@Seb G I've heard this a few times but to me Trump seems like a total coward and would never take a stand for anything beyond considering himself at that very moment and reacting to it. I don't think he wanted any of this, merely to use the political process as a promotional stunt so I'm convinced he will be internally relieved so long as he finds a convincing enough outward facing rationale for why he lost to absolve him (and more importantly _the brand_ (tm)) of defeat as there almost certainly won't be any consequences for anything outside of that ego spectacle.
Can't believe David Harvey said 'dissing'. Far out.
Thanks Doc!

The way Marx thinks about ideas and how they originate is just fascinating and illuminating
My wife gave me a list of groceries to get at speedway but I forgot the list and I remembered all seven items.

@Seb G I did perfect
tremendous list, the best list, from the standpoint of lists I've never seen a better list, _and it's true_ , a lot of people are saying this.
thank you professor Harvey, very teaching lecture, buy the way..would not you upgrade the quality of the audio for videos please, would you?
He is probably using a macbook for this lmao. They have shitty camera quality
I don't see any problem with the audio. I don't *hear* any problem with the audio either.
beautiful! these are the best words.
Love these videos, but I might suggest a better microphone. Sound isn't good.

TIP CULTURE IS COUNTER REVOLUTIONARY.
Where can I find this in Marx's writing?
I got a bit behind with these excellent talks, but I'm catching up now. This one is a real gem!
Great stuff

You negotiate from force, i.e. from organization, strike and riot. Negotiation is not begging.
Good lecture Professor Harvey! When you mention the company store my mind goes to scenes from "The Molly Maguries" where they deduct the workers tools from their wages. One of the problems I see stems from human nature, where when I work I want top union wages but when I shop I will pick the cheaper non-union products.
That's a condition and a problem of the individual not human nature. human nature is evolutionary changeable !
When you’re broke you get cheap products. Most of us playing in the capitalists playground are broke.
Executives, white shirts, blue shirts, union, non union, and minimum wage workers, day labor
This country is doomed.
Doomed for those who have too much as nobody gains in the end

@@Bisquick - I agree. Also he's most likely going to win, because the alternative sucks.
