In the fleet this movie is considered more of a documentary than it is a comedy. I can put names and faces of crewmates that I served with on every one of the characters.

Yup. Heck, I dated a Lt. Lake type of lady for a while (she was a pilot, not a submarine officer, and more confident from the get-go, but the same type of doggedly determined). She’s still a great friend and I‘m privileged to know her. Always think of her when watching this movie.
I guess that’s why this flick is such a service favorite; there is always someone great you knew that pops to mind when watching this. OK, so I served in the Army, but still. You Navy folks are all right, too. 😉

It gives Lt Lake & the crew characters room to grow and empathize with each other later in the film. I don't know why someone wouldn't like that? Boats like Stingray, or USS Pampanito, the museum boat that played Stingray, were designed to spend the majority of their time above the water, submerging only for recon or to attack.

It would be cool to have current submariners get a chance to relive the period where the US Navy and the submarine force came into its own. It is substantially different now from just 75 years earlier but still, in some ways, a direct connection for those that risked their lives in the 'Silent Service'.

I was just reading the wikipedia page and, well sort of. It depends which sub you mean. The USS Stingray was an actual submarine during World War II and belonged to the Salmon Class submarines. These were built in the 1930s and were the first American submarines to fight in battle against the Japanese during the war. However, they had certain technical problems, so they were phased out in favor of newer submarines. The submarine that the audience sees in the film is the USS Pampanito which was a Balao Class submarine. It had a very distinguished career during and after the war. However, one of the most notable incidents is that the crew accidentally torpedoed a ship carrying 1350 British and Australian POWs most of whom died. It has been a museum ship since 1975.

It’s also worth seeing if anyone you have a streaming contract with (Netflix, Hulu, Prime, etc) has it for your region.
You can also try Amazon for a physical copy, or local second hand shops.

In the Navy, an 0-3 is a Lieutenant. 0-1 is an Ensign and an 0-2 is a LT jg (junior grade).

Because a Lt. in the Navy is not like a Lt. in the Army or Marine Corps, just like a Captain. In the Navy a Captain is like a full Bird Col in the Army.

NORTH Korea etc. are building new Diesel Electric boats for exactly the scenario of these war games. Electric boats are much quieter than nuclear subs. No legs, no range on batteries, but very, very quiet.

There are pros and cons to both nuke and diesel/electric designs. 90% of the decision usually comes down to cost and nuclear technology available.

I wonder what a new electric boat could do..small turbine generators (like an aircraft APU) drawing air through a snorkel, supercapacitors and lithium batteries, everything designed to be as little electrical draw as possible..
or even just fuel cells..pour diesel in, get electricity and water out, with almost no moving parts, noise, or emissions.
but anyone with the capabilities to do all this will just build a nuke boat...

@@mikeking7470 Only so long as their batteries last. When they need to snorkel to recharge, EVERYBODY knows where they are. But even nukes can go quiet for silent running, by powering down unnecessary systems, and running the reactor with passive convection cooling.
