- So you want to be a Divemaster? This is a little inside look at what a Divemaster-in-Training has to go through to complete his/her Divemaster Certification. Lyell will explain that, Micah, the Divemaster-in-Training, will be taking certified divers out on a guided dive. He will provide a briefing and then guide them on the dive. The "twist" in this story is that the certified divers are all dive instructors who's job it is to make life as difficult as possible for the Divemaster. This "graduation dive" is a way to put the Divemaster-in-Training under stress, and task load them to ensure they handle themselves professionally, recognize and take care of diver problems quickly and most of all ensure the safety of each and every diver. Micah excelled himself during this dive! Thanks, for the Video!! It’s was definitely a dive I will never forget!!
You had an outstanding instructor and you handled yourself perfectly! Congrats Micah! Share this video with family and friends. They will be proud of you!
You were amazing, Micha! Work on that air consumption a bit, but we did test you and you were quick to Id problems and correct them. Can’t wait to work with you in the future!
The briefing was brutal... I would've grabbed my stuff and left. If they don't want to listen above the water then they certainly aren't going to listen below the water... He did really well though! Great job Micha!
Brock, thanks for the comment.....you are correct, sometimes a Divemaster or Instructor may make the choice not to proceed if presented with a bad situation to begin with.....but our purpose was to make Micah think on his feet and handle things as best he could. Thanks for watching!
So much fun! Glad you could document Micha’s success!
Brunch ain't lunch! 🤣 Congrats Micah, I probably would've pulled the pin on that bunch!
I enjoyed my time as a divemaster. I really enjoyed training new divers. Had some good instructors and some not so good instructors. Enjoyed being my dive clubs divemaster as well. Free diving!
You guys tormented that poor fella but hat off to him he took it well and handled himself brilliantly
Oh my. Lyell this was ridiculous. And so fun. Micah handled himself well.
Wow, y’all really put him through the wringer in that one. He handled it well, however. Hats off to Micha!
Cruel! 😂. But hats off to Micah who handled it with patience and poise 👏 Somehow this video just might have pushed me to doing DM training. Thank you guys!
Nice video - remembers me at my final divemaster dive... 😀
hahaha herding cats, great video, and congrats to the dm
That was pretty awesome! Did you let him know afterward it was an initiation and what was his reaction? I myself am thinking of pursuing my DM and am in the process of my rescue diver course right now.
Is there a specialty course I can pay for called “messing up the DM?” Or something similar?
Oh man it would be fun to kinda mess with the poor bastard. Putting sticks in his fin slots, asking him how to use my computer, put my 1st stage on the tank backwards. That’s good fun. Put some blue food coloring in my rock boot and freak out when we leave the water and I remove it.
Good for him for making it
Oh dang 😫 I have over 600 dives in the last 5 years since I got OW certified, finishing my rescue now and moving forward to DM.
I have that about taking care of everyone but you guys are mean 🤣🤣 haha that guy was struggling
Congrats Micah. Not a divemaster, but I wonder if having all the worst scenarios thrown at him at once that other instructors have experienced is the best and most realistic path? I wonder if having more realistic training like having a model with several tests where a few things happen would be more realistic and helpful?
Not judging the process that I haven't been through. Just throwing it out there.
Great video! Subscribing.
Chris thanks for your comments. Don’t worry though. During Divemaster training we gradually introduce candidates to a variety of scenarios that they may encounter both during teaching situations and while guiding certified divers. The last dive is just a tradition of the dive shop to provide one last “fun but challenging dive” as a graduation of sorts. Hopefully Divemasters never encounter this many bad divers in one dive but they will experience some of the things we challenged him with. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
@@everythingscuba That's awesome. Now I get it. Hazing can be a bit fun....
ouch damn! i'm taking my divemaster next month, i hope they won't be this brutal XD
Lol. I want to be a Divemaster not a babysitter.
Congratulations Micah!
Sometimes you gotta do both!
Certified in 1974 at a YMCA , worked at the time at a dive shop that was PADI, I was checked out as a PAID diver, certified as a Dive master in 1978 and also was hired as a career as a Firefighter/Paramedic and over time time Dept. Divemaster and then MABAS division Divemaster,Becoming one today is not the same, I would not of put up with that kind of B S that future divemaster did, in my day if the clients acted that way they would of been asked to leave no questions asked. Old school is still the best way.
You are correct Bob, it’s a sad reflection on what some Divemasters have to deal with nowadays. But obviously this was a very exaggerated version of what a DM may encounter in the real world. Mostly a test on whether they can keep their cool and still perform well. Thanks for your comment and thanks for watching!
Did he know that these were all instructors ahead of time? Or, was he going along with it?
He knew. He knew we were going to throw a bunch of curveballs at him. Hopefully he’d never have that bad of group as areal DM. :)
I don’t wanna be a divemaster anymore lol!
LOL, Thats just cruel.
