I've just bought myself a Canon AE-1 Program and this video couldn't have been more helpful! Brilliant review, the links in the description are a big help too, thank you:)
+Tasha Bailey You're welcome Tasha! Glad you found this helpful! Thanks for watching and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Have fun with your AE-1!
This is a great camera. I bought mine new in 1985 and still have it. In 2002 I took it to a repair shop for it's first and only time. Other than a good cleaning, they only had to replace one weak spring. I haven't used it in years since I switched over to a DSLR. But have been itching lately to buy film and reintroduce myself to my old favorite.
Oh holy sh**t!! I was scrolling through AE-1 videos because I just purchased mine yesterday and came across Dan! I recognized your appearance on the thumbnail and had to click on crisp, as I heard the voice I knew this was Big Dan Gaming. Huge ME fan and you’re my favorite ME RUclipsr. Had no idea you were a photographer, so glad I came across this second channel (or first) incredible man more respect to you. Keep up the work on all this, as always great video and learned a lot man. Appreciate it and keep it up.
Dan... it's December 5, 2020... I have this camera, LOST for it for a couple of years...yeah, at my cousins house..lol. Got it back today and seriously forgot all the wonderful features it comes with. I just need Film now..YOUR VIDEO on this GEM of a camera is fantastic. A TOP NOTCH refresher course for me... Thank you mate.
You took me to my twenties when I purchased my AE1 program in 1982 from SF. I was using Rollei and this was a huge jump for me. Again a good video from you, thanx.
I got my AE-1 Program in May of 1983. And still use it today. Yes, you do need a battery to take pictures, but spares are small and easily fit into you kit bag. For rough and ready work I use my Nikon FM2N. No batteries needed. Unless you wedded to the internal light meter.
Gee, that was super fun watching this. The AE-1 Program was my very first camera and I loved it to pieces. I'm using the Fuji XT-2 now and I can see there are a lot of similarities.
Pentax Super Program 35mm SLR film camera (circa 1984) has both shutter priority and aperture priority mode, as well as fully automatic.. Uses Pentax KsubA lens mount (lens with automatic shutter speed and aperture) or K lens mount (no automation).
I would add that any Nikon from that era is able to do aperture priority mode, not just the flagship F3 which is still very expensive. Things like FE/FM series do it (and are closer to the AE-1 in termes of market segmentation)
Awesome Review Dan! I just picked up an AE-1 Program yesterday and your video got me ready to go and shoot film, I am excited to see how my first roll turns out. THANK YOU!
I bought my AE-1 Program a couple of months ago at a thrift store for 12 dollars American and have shot some amazing photos with it. Greatest camera ever? I've shot some amazing pics with my OM-1 as well. It did get me into FD Canons and I now own the ,AE-1, an AV-1, and my latest, FTb.
Another great review, Dan! I love the Canon "A" Series cameras. In fact, I just shot a roll of Portra 160 at Disneyland, CA recently with my Stepfather's old AE-1 that I inherited. It's amazing that a 40 year old camera can still take awesome photos!
Thanks Sean! Yeah these are among Canon's classics. I'm excited to try out a few more Canon bodies, like the A1. Hopefully I'll have the chance to review those in 2017. Thanks for watching and following along!
Hi Dan, just recently discovered your channel and subscribed. It's great to find someone still interested in film, I shot film for many years and still have film cameras and all my darkroom gear. Keep up the good work and thanks.
i thrifted this camera 2 days ago for $15! in really good condition also! i didnt want to just buy a film camera i wanted to let it find me and it happened. took a few shots yesterday im so excited to see how they come out!
Dude!! I just bought an AE1-P off a buddy of mine. I have 3 lenses for it. Wanted to find out a little more about it and BAM. Here you are. Excellent beginner intro. Going to check out the link for the manual. Thanks for posting this great video.
this is the camera I learned photography with as a college student in the early 2000s, it is also the camera I got passed down from my father. This is the camera that got me into photography, unfortunately that camera doesn't work anymore, but I will get another one sometime soon. It is a beautiful and reliable camera to have. This video is great, thank you!
+The Cantrell Project Thanks for watching and sharing your story about the AE-1. My first film camera was a Canon FTb that my Dad gave me. Not quite as good as the AE-1 but I still shoot with it occasionally and I'll always keep it. Hope you can track down another AE-1. It's a joy to use
Great video, thanks! I can't wait to get my film developed. I said out loud oh wow he's from Boston too when i saw the Charlestown Bridge and the Zakim :) and i think i saw some East Boston shots as well.
I’ve been using an AE-1 for a while, and decided to order an AE-1 Program with all the fixins on eBay, super excited. Great video! Very helpful and will make getting started 1000x easier. I’m so happy the ISO selector was relocated. Mine seems to have a mind of its own and I usually fix it every other shot. Does the film advance lever still have that large diameter head screw right on the top holding it on? Mine constantly is coming loose on its own.
Thanks for your video, this is great info. I've recently found my family's old camera and it's the AE-1 Program, complete with lenses, power winder, etc. There is even film still in it that we will develop and have fun seeing what it shows us. We haven't decided if we will keep it or not, but if not we would want it to go to someone that would appreciate this great camera - any suggestions?
We all wish! But it's incorrect, despite sometimes claimed elsewhere also. The viewfinder will show "M" (a hint) and _suggested_ aperture, not whatever you've chosen on the lens unless by coincidence. And anything that comes close to correct shutter speed will be due to luck or film/development latitude. FD lens Canons have no mechanism for the lens to communicate to the camera which aperture was manually chosen. This is why the earlier A1 performs Av mode with a dial on the body so that the body makes the lens stop down the aperture to the chosen value when the shutter is tripped.
Hi, i've a question: i've an AE-1 Program and i've noticed that of the camera is in program mode and you choose an aperture that's not A the camera will actually expose properly the film...isnt that actually aperture priority? because actually as you say in the video aperture priority wasn't a feature, but it actually works...have you ever tried? have a nice day!
Not sure if you'll read this. But are you sure this cameras doesnt have aperture priority? I have shot with the shutter speed dial set at program, and I change the aperture to 1.4 and it shoots at different speeds depending on the lighting..
the canon a1 has all 4 modes (program, a priority, s priority and manual), but the ae1 line (ae1 and ae1-p) features shutte priority (and manual of course and program for the ae1-p)
since the aperture is on the 35mm lens that comes with the body how would i adjust aperture if I wanted to use my 24-105mm lens? Will it even work with the body?
I just got one and I don’t know where I can get some film was wondering if you know a place with good film. Also great video I didn’t know much about it but know I do.👍
great great review and beautiful camera however, i tend to avoid slrs which have automatic modes :S for me, it kills a bit the feel of "old" analog cameras. but as you rightly said, for beginner users it's great to jump in :)
+photographicalexperiments Yeah I definitely feel you there! I almost never use the automatic features. I just like how this camera feels to shoot with
As someone just getting into film photography (mainly since I just found one of these cameras myself!) I do have to say the automatic modes did help me get used to it, now I'm trying out a completely manual camera. First roll through was trash but the second should be great!
I came across your channel this morning and have been hooked for the whole day! I'm a Canon enthusiast, therefore, I kindly ask what is a reasonable price to purchase a brand new Canon AE-1 Program? Thank you Dan, and keep up with your good work!
Thanks! I would say anywhere between $100 and $150 with a 50mm lens - depending on the condition. Prices sometimes fluctuate a lot, but if you're patient you should be able to find one around that price.
Dan Bullman Photography I am actually referring to my Canon AE-1 Program. It was bought back in 1986 but never used. The camera comes in its original box that include eye cup, battery, manual and documents. I need to raise some cash hence I am thinking of selling the camera except that I'm not sure what to price it at?
The Pentax Super Program (or "Super A" in some markets) is simply a better camera if you want everything the AE-1 Program does, *plus* aperture priority, and for far less money on the used market.
Awesome video! Just inherited this camera and another vintage camera, the Canon TX. Was looking for info and found you. Need to learn more about this stuff. Each camera bag has a 50mm, 28mm and a 200mm Canon lens. Are those good lenses? I just ordered the battery and a couple of rolls of film to see if the cameras work. Also, where do you send the film for development? Thanks and subscribed!
Hello, I just recently purchased this camera and the advance switch seems to be stuck. It won't pass the "s" in order to roll the film. Do you have any tips?
Nice camera, but the downside u can’t take photo if out of battery, I like more using the Nikon f2 and Olympus OM-1 have the solid click sound and u can operate it without battery
+Mark Pascual I usually send it to The Darkroom in Cali. Sometimes I use Colortek here in Boston. But usually the Darkroom because they have good rates for scanning
Actually all the canon f1 ae av a1 are good test all av 1 is good camera use flatbed scanner after done I made size same size massive 48000 res quality size photo top all versions good I'd say Av1 best put the power winder on it fast very for All this type of canon camera ae av a1
+Dan Bullman Photography Thank you so much! I want to buy the Canon AE 1, but I have never worked with an analogic camera before. Do you know what the difference is between the AE 1 and the AE 1 Program?
I wouldn't recommend it. If you open the back before you rewind the film it will ruin the photos if it gets exposed to light. Your best bet is to just rewind the film with the back closed and then remove the film afterwards.
Well the thing is that I kinda panicked when I forgot press the bottom and it tearing sounds in side and I the film torn up (this happened in the evening) I opened it up and I got the film back into the roll. I was thinking about throwing away the roll
My very first camera, I bought it in 1981 and it cost me six weeks wages. I also bought a Tamron 80-210 zoom a couple of weeks later (4 weeks wages) I have the Tamron beside me as I type this comment.
+mamiyapress That's awesome! Amazing to hang onto the stuff you worked hard to get. I wonder if folks saving up for high end digital cameras will still have a camera that works in 30 years
Dan Bullman Photography I still shoot regularly with a Sony A200 for my macro work and that's a pretty old DSLR. I would upgrade but I shoot most of my digital work on Canon EOS gear. besides it would cut into my film budget.
Yeah I was rocking with my Canon 40D until about a year ago. I'll probably hang onto it since it was my first serious camera. But I don't shoot with it anymore since I got my Sony A6000 and a bunch of film cameras lol.

So agree!!!!
Excellent video! Just picked one up and can't wait to get my first few rolls back!
I use this camera since i was 5 years old. Recently loaded film after 6 years. Hope to start shoot again :)
+Neria Cohen Yeah definitely get back into it. It's a lot of fun. Thanks for watching and sharing your story :)
Canon needs to make a new AE-1 program Digital SLR :)
+Neria Cohen Maybe they should :)
Pentax Super Program 35mm SLR film camera (circa 1984) has both shutter priority and aperture priority mode, as well as fully automatic.. Uses Pentax KsubA lens mount (lens with automatic shutter speed and aperture) or K lens mount (no automation).
Why does your camera looks new omg I’m so inlove with it, very well taken care of
Happy to see Big Dan with the same passion as me - both mass effect and film photography B)

+bakti widiarti Awesome! I'm glad this helped you. It's why I love to make videos :) Thanks for watching and enjoy your Canon AE-1 Program ✌
If you leave it in program mode and manually set the aperture, is that not in effect aperture priority? Seems to work for me.
This was super helpful!
Thanks Trevin! Glad you enjoyed it :D
The AE-1 has also aperture priority. Leave the shutter dial on Program, and choose your desired aperture on the lens.
We all wish! But it's incorrect, despite sometimes claimed elsewhere also. The viewfinder will show "M" (a hint) and _suggested_ aperture, not whatever you've chosen on the lens unless by coincidence. such a good video
I still have mine...going to start taking pictures again.

Leica M6 is the greatest film camera ever. Fully mechanical. No auto modes. TTL metering. Superb craftsmanship and build quality.
Yes I've heard a lot of people call the M6 their G.O.A.T. Haven't had the chance to shoot one myself :)
Dan Bullman Photography definitely add it to the bucket list. Your reviews are thorough. Keep it going!
+Michael Frantz Thank you Michael! Will definitely snag a M6 at some point. Thanks for watching :)
@@DanBullmanPhotography but its like 1,700$
how long does the battery usually last?
about a year
Thank you!
Hey Dan, happen to know if anyone in the Boston area still services/repairs them? If they do, is it even worth it?
+Frannister I'm not aware of any repair shops. Unless it's a minor/cheap repair it might be better to just buy another camera body
Nice camera, but the downside u can’t take photo if out of battery, I like more using the Nikon f2 and Olympus OM-1 have the solid click sound and u can operate it without battery
Does it have an adjustable diopter?
No
great video thank you

i have camera ae1 its my dads cam... but i dont know if its still functioning..
What do I do if I push the black button on the bottom without film in the camera?
hey dan how do you develop your film?
+Mark Pascual I usually send it to The Darkroom in Cali. Sometimes I use Colortek here in Boston. But usually the Darkroom because they have good rates for scanning
can I choose the aperture of there's no way?
+Sebastian Soko You can choose the aperture in manual mode
How do I get the pictures I make on my computer?
If you develop your film at a lab you can have them scan the film for you. Or you can scan it at home with a film scanner or a mobile app.
Bought my own in 1986 :)

+MultiTechnoDog The place where I get my film developed scans the film and sends me digital files. That's how I put them on a computer
Dan Bullman Photography Okay thanks
+MultiTechnoDog No problem 👍
does this camera works without battery?
It does not. You need a 6V battery for it to work

I wouldn't recommend it. If you open the back before you rewind the film it will ruin the photos if it gets exposed to light. Your best bet is to just rewind the film with the back closed and then remove the film afterwards.
