I am a real estate Photographer, this camera Canon AE-1 Program was a given to me yesterday as a gift by homeowners who wanted to thank me for helping them sell their home. The camera is literally in mint condition. Very grateful and thankful.
My grandpa gave this exact model of camera as a present to my mom and her brother like in the early 90s. They just passed it on to me. I’m super excited to start snapping photos of the family so that I can one day pass them on to my children. Thank you for your tutorial. It took a lot of the guess work out of it!
This was super helpful! Thank you very much! Just got my first film camera (Canon ae-1 program) can’t wait to try it out! This video was super clear on how everything functions!
So glad I found your channel and this video. I am looking to add one of these to my collection of film cameras and this just confirms to me that I want one of these classic beauties!
I just picked one of these up for $40 earlier today! 9/1/22 Didn’t come w/ a battery and no department stores had any in stock. So I negotiated the price down to $40, leveraging the fact that I couldn’t test any of the functions. The mirror was clean, the light seals weren’t disintegrated, hardly any cosmetic scuffs and it was clean af. So i took a chance. Put a battery in it and BOOM it came to life! All the dials and buttons work properly. Haven’t had the chance to run film through it yet. Fingers are CROSSED! It’s going to be my first experience w/ a film camera, coming from a Sony a6000 w/ a Sony G 18-105mm f4 and a 7 artisans 35mm f1.2. Wish me luck!
Great you enjoy using this body. My main film bodies for years were A-1, T70 and T90. I have also used AE-1P but was underwhelmed by it. The T70 is functionally similar but has an incredibly easy to use exp lock button which AE-1P/A-1 also has but is slow and inconvenient in comparison. The T70 also has a partial metering option which saved me on many occasions.
I just took out my dad's Canon AE-1 for the first time in years. I am really excited to use it. Thank you so much for this video!!! Not boring at all!😁
I've been learning with a Canon 80D for awhile now, but I started a film class for college so I bought an AE-1. It truly is a beautiful camera and so far I really enjoy it. This video was helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much! I’ve always shot in Manual Mode with my old skool light meter ( Sekonic L-8) on other vintage cameras that I’ve come across. I appreciate the thorough video! Very useful 😊❤
My father passed away 5 years ago. He collected cameras over his 60 year photography career. I found this camera amongst several other classics a couple months ago. I’m finally using this. I AM IN LOVE.❤️🤍 I miss him so much. He’d be so happy. Photography was his life and passion. He definitely passed it on to me.
I found a canon ae-1 in my attic and I was trying to figure it out using the old manual but this was so much helpful! Just needs a new battery and It's good to go!
Almost the same for me, I recently found mine while cleaning my house, I'm not really into photography, but this might change my mind, cause I'm really interested in learning more about this camera.
I have an AE-1 Program and it is a excellent camera. It came with three lenses, a cheap one I sold, a Canon FD 50mm f/1.4 and a 28 f/2.8. The camera in this video might've been serviced recently because after some time, it makes a very distinctive sound that is very appreciated.
Nice job explaining the works of the camera, I'm looking at selling mine for $50 but couldn't figure out why it wouldn't wind, till I found the battery compartment.
I just ordered one online, and here's to hoping it arrives unharmed....or arrives at all 😂 I'm excited to start shooting film on this beauty! This video is a great intro to the camera! Been doing digital photography for a few years now but I fell in love with how film looks and I'm excited for it!
My grandpa had a film camera that he gave to me but it was broken without him knowing and a friend of mine gave me his to try out and was broken as well. Long story short the local photo shop owner gave me his old AE-1 program for free and also all the bells and whistles for it to work and I didn't even have to pay $100 out of pocket for it. I'm glad that I have one now and can't wait to develop my first roll of film soon.
A camera with 5 lenses for a hundred? Daaaamn. I paid a hundred just for the body and it's the cheapest I could find online. Excellent review, fast and easy to digest
The AE-1 was the camera we used in the Army CID. It was a strange beast with its shutter-preferred system. It also wouldn't tolerate rough handling and had a very delicate lens mount compared to the beastly Nikon construction. But, the optics were excellent. The AE-1 replaced the far more expensive and bulletproof Leica and Rollei cameras. I remember turning those cameras into the PDO (Property Disposal Office) only to see them begin destroying them. They drove a #2 screwdriver through the lens and film back with one whack? Reason? Flooding the market with so many cameras was detrimental to company sales. Although I doubt the taxpayer would understand.
I've had mine since 1980 and it still works just like it was new. None of the functionality has appeared to change much from the original. It's an excellent camera especially for a novice or even an experienced photographer.
Dude wow!! I literally am having the hardest time finding it for anything under 300$...and of course online purchases make the whole process feel sketchy!
Hi. A question. When I use the light meter it only changes when I change the speed, but not when I change the aperture. I can have an exposure at 1.4 and 1/250 and the light meter shows me the same exposure as 22 and 1/250. It only changes when I change the speed. The light meter only works properly when I press the stop down lever. There you can see when the aperture changes in the lens and there the light meter varies with speed and aperture. Only the lightmeter changes and recognise the aperture and speed shutter when i press depth of field button. Do you know why it is? my lens is a fd 50 1.4
Thank you for this video! It is super helpful! - My exposure count screen seems stuck on 38, and doesn’t change with a new role of film, does anyone know how to rewind this please?
I’m doing point and shoot camera but I’m planning to step up. What should I get for slr camera and flash and lens for first timer! Would mean a lot to me if you could advise
If you leave the lens in Auto mode, but don’t put the shutter speed to program, leave it at 500 say, will the camera a still adjust the aperture? Or does this function only work when the dial is set to program?
Hello, I just bought a vintage Canon AE-1 program from Etsy, but the film advance lever does not go all the way out and unfortunately it's not refundable :'( Could you tell me where I can purchase another one?
Crap you paid 100 bucks for it and got 5 lenses? Well then I definitely overpaid haha. That being said, at the dealership I bought it from, 8 of them were sold within 24hrs.. so I guess demand increased over the last year. Oh well, very happy with my purchase. It is a beautiful camera. Looking forward to shoot some film. Will be a nice change from digital. Thanks so much for this neat tutorial. Veeeery useful indeed!
Does the switch that locks in the aperture give you aperture priority? I’ve heard there’s only shutter priority on this camera? If this isn’t the case do you mind explaining what that function is for?
It's for shutter priority. You select the shutter speed, and the aperture is chosen by the camera. Or program mode where the camera selects both shutter and aperture for correct exposure.
iPhone is cool for photography, and certainly have gotten many photos over the years I would not have gotten otherwise.
