I'm the author of Sacrifice, thanks so much for the shoutout! I totally agree on the "cross-polonization" between RPGs and boardgames, I personally am a big fan of boardgames (including yours, by the way, love Iron Helm, I have the full collection) and I always try to implement the type of straight mechanics that they have into RPGs. I think that particularly solo RPGs benefit greatly from a series of well defined mechanics.
Thanks! I am looking forward to reading Sacrifice. Solo designs are so much fun for me to explore, and I agree that the bones have to be there in the mechanics to support the game. I like how Fallen leaves a lot up to the imagination and even includes oracles and so many tables to spark a creative path.
Hey Jason! Love your videos, I actually bought Tin Helm recently and am excitedly waiting on it to arrive! So happy to see you covering Fallen, Perplexing Ruins is an awesome creator and Fallen has so much evocative material in it.
Thanks! I have been watching your playthroughs and I love your excitement and imagination! Fallen is great because I think it leaves just the right amount out of the book and that forces you to be creative.
@@jasonglover6615 If you like that, I think you might enjoy looking into PbtA mechanics, especially stuff like Ironsworn, which Fallen is inspired by! I do feel that Fallen has a bit more structure than those, though, especially for combat, which I do prefer, but as you said, no harm in exposing yourself to more mechanics to grow as a designer! I especially felt that as I am actually a solo video game developer, and while I haven't announced it yet, my next video game project will be using a similar magic system to Fallen and Maze Rats, in that it will be using combinations of disparate elements to allow you to make your own spells!
Some interesting systems. I like the “complications” and “harm” roll results systems. Anything that’s not a straight failure and has something interesting to a failure I find more interesting than just getting a flat no you failed at that check move on
Agreed, it sort of creates a grey area, or transition. It does seem like otherwise there is this harsh line between success and failure dictated by a the value of only one.
Fallen is great and specifically the Hilgrab supplement is the star for me! I really enjoyed some of the board game like mechanics to a point I simply play it as one after some tinkering :)
Hey Jason, just so honored you'd have my game on here :) Means a lot to me! Hope you all have fun playing it.
Thanks! It really is a refreshing take on a TTRPG. I will always have my eye on your work!

You're a gift to the board game community. Thanks for doing this, it's all thought-provoking.
You gotta lot cool books there, Jason! White Box is such a great value.
Yep, spend some time flipping through White Box and it looks great. I couldn't believe the price.

How did you discover these books that you bought, especially those that you didn't get from Amazon?
I watch a lot of the Dungeon Dive on RUclips. He dives into a lot of smaller publishers, with a focus on solo games.
