PLAYSTATION PORTAL - 15 Things You NEED TO KNOW Before You Buy

- This isn’t the PS Vita revival many wanted, but with Sony’s first handheld gaming device in a decade PlayStation Portal Remote Player promises a handheld window into your PS5 collection.
Announced back in August, PlayStation Portal has been hyped and derided in equal measure, with a raft of useful features with all the gimmicks of the PS5’s DualSense Controllers offset by the wealth of features Sony’s upcoming handheld doesn’t include.
Playing your PS5 games on a stable Wi-Fi connection from wherever you are is an enticing prospect but is it worth the asking price? This feature highlights 15 things you need to know before you take the plunge and order one for yourself. Игры
I'm that guy that moves his PS5 to multiple rooms and takes it with him on trips... this would actually be beneficial for me lol.
Good luck playing it on hotel wifi 😂
With that $$$Tag it’s better to buy the ps5 slim and put it in the other room 😂
@AlphaGamingImpact or another ps5 which in the UK you can find the disc version for £389.49 right now
@@BrandinPlaysRPGs Ngl, I am nervous about this lmao. We shall see. I will gladly sell it if it sucks. But, I want to give it a chance. Mainly for indie games/Visual Novels
I got mine coming 15th
I’m excited
Though I’ll probably get the slim also
I bought my dad a 65' LG OLED TV after his old TV broke, he so addicted to it and watch movie all day that he said he never had experience like this before. I can only play my PS5 after everyone sleep at night, this PS Portal is a must have for me.
Just use your phone bro
Do yall only have 1 TV in the house
I think it is a bit of a niche product. It's not for me, my preference is playing on a big screen, but I hope anyone who wants one and buys it enjoys gaming on it. I hope it works well. If you are excited for it, just ignore the online cry babies. Real gamers don't care what you game on. We just appreciate we all enjoy the same hobby.
Such a good attitude. Go you.
Great mindset is absolutely ok if it isn’t for you and not raining on others parade who are excited to have it for its convenience
@lenknox23 thanks.
@@jlav9594 thanks. Same to you.
Is customers like you guys that makes Sony and all these other big companies not to have to put out their best because they have already established a name for themselves. When a person is willing to throw away $200 for a useless product with outdated technology their motivation is always going to be how they can make more money off of the faithful consumers I have been with them over the years instead of having an attitude of how we can give back for their loyal service. Thank God for companies like valve who've been in the business for 20 years but still understand that listening to the community and actually applying it to their products makes a world of a difference.
I preordered one and this is how I look at it. First and foremost, the PS Portal is an accessory; furthermore, it isn’t a standalone console nor is it priced like one. There is other PS5 accessories available for specific user needs.
Pulse Elite: $149
Pulse Explore Earbuds: $199
DualSense Edge Controller: $199
PS VR2: $549
Officially Licensed Backbone Controller accessory for Mobile Device: $99 (and you still need to acknowledge the purchase of a Mobile Device. A purchase almost impossible in price to be as little as $100 to equal the PS Portal’s price difference in total)
PS Portal: $199
Each accessory here is priced as an accessory that is an addition to the PS5 console with a focused objectionable function for the users need. None of these accessories are made to be required to play your PS5, but expand your functionality and experience using your PS5 if you own one.
The PS Portal is priced the same as the DualSense Edge’s Pro focused controller, but replaces those enhanced controller upgrades for an 8” 1080p 60fps touchscreen for simply streaming the PS5 video output directly to your controller. That simple objective should be enough to decide if you need this accessory or not. Compared to the DualSense Edge Controller, you should be able to easily understand the value of controller advance inputs versus a controller that receives video output.
In addition to me simplifying the PS Portal’s main functionality, you are getting an accessory that has zero controller functionality loss from the PS5’s normal DualSense’s features. You are also getting stereo speaker audio output, along with built in direct connectivity with the New Pulse Elite and Explore headsets (both needing to use the included dongle for you to use with your PS5 normally but not needed for pairing with the Portal directly).
If you have used Remote Play before, Sony claims that the PS Portal will also have high quality proprietary Remote Play connectivity with you PS5 as well. The PS Portal is not limited to being used on the same network too; although, I think most adopters of the Portal will use it in network mainly to disconnect from our PS5s being mostly permanently married to our living room TVs. You can have multiple PS5s (or even PS4s in Remote Play) for different rooms, or settle for a Portal at a $199 price point. But don’t forget, this device can play on other WiFi networks away from you PS5’s home network.
The PS Portal is lighter in weight compared to something like a Steam Deck, handles and feels the exact same as a DualSense, cheaper in price compared to other devices able to play the same caliber of game quality and fidelity, yet is simply a premium controller priced at $199.
In the end, this device isn’t for everyone but is definitely something that doesn’t need to be argued about if it is great or completely stupid.
The PS Portal has one of the most reasonable price points for exactly what it does and easily comparable to other premium controller’s price and functions. It’s less of an argument of why the hell did Sony release this product; and more simply, does it meet your needs or not? If it doesn’t you can easily move on without loathing seeing those who decided that it does.
It is a Premium Controller through and through that doesn’t exaggerate what it is, nor does it hide any of its true life limits of capabilities. It’s a Controller that has an additional 8” Screen for $199. I think for those who are waiting for reviews on the Portal will just find that it’s a controller that provides an elite experience using the Remote Play function, End of story. The only conclusion from reviews I see people finding is, it the PS Portal a purchase that is right for your wallet?
novelist
I purchased one because I travel a lot for work. Now I can remote play from this device and have a freed up phone.
I could see it being ideal for that. Nice one.
I was all for this device until I learned you have to have a wifi connection, and have to have your ps5 turned on. Defeats the whole purpose of a handheld
It can turn on the ps5 from rest mode
I get really bad motion sickness on tv-based consoles. I didn’t used to, but I’ve had it for years now. Until I figure it out, I’m so happy to have this available. Definitely game changer lol
Okay Psvr2 and tell me how bad your motion sickness gets lol
If i have my ps5 connect to Ethernet cable will this portable still have same connection speed? Only will be playing warzone
Thos is perfect for me and mine will be delivered on launch day. I've got my man shed where I work and also have my PS5 in there. I've got a great set up in there and love locking myself away but then sometimes I just want to, you know, be in the same space as my family. Its not about not having free TV, it's about being present on the sofa pretending to enjoy the TV programmes my wife watches but can play whatever game I'm playing. No Bluetooth is fine. Wired earbuds will be fine until I decide to drop another £200 on the new Sony ones. Looking forward to this in my life
I have tried PS remote play and if it works on the same kind of infrastructure, the lag (even when shared on the same wifi network in my own house) is noticeable. I would be okay playing slower, non twich reflex games, but for the ones that require fast reflexes, the slight latency is an issue. Hopefully they've managed to cut it down a bit more enough to justify making an entire product out of it, but I would definitely have to try it out at a shop before making a purchase.
Hero thanks for sharing
Remote switch on works perfectly fine from remote play app on phone. PS5 simply needs to be in Rest mode, same for this device. (Can't wait!)
Yeah, this makes me think this video isn’t worth the watch since they don’t know how the current remote play works.
I like to move around my home, i dont like sitting down for very long. So this is a win for me because i like moving around lol. Plus my wife can look at her shows on the tv.
So if i were to go on trip, do i need least my ps5 on internet or both?
his stream is via internet? How much internet data on 1hr of playing?
Excited !
I was surprised to see that as 1 week before release this is both sold out on Amazon and Best Buy up here in Canada. I have had one pre-ordered for several weeks and I may return it if there is too much lag over wi-fi.
i'm in ottawa...what's the price?
Probably scalpers again
@@howie3601 I returned it after a couple of days. There was too much lag on my home network which made the games pretty much unplayable.
So excited 😊
Can’t wait for mine to arrive. Definitely gonna unbox it on my channel but at the same time this way when I travel I can take my station instead of murdering my phone battery. Mine should arrive on launch. Preordered on the first day lol
Can you use it as a second player?
I pre-ordered this device good present for me. 😁
This is definitely for me! I play my switch so much more these days because I can play in bed after a long day…this will have me playing so much more ps5 honestly
I feel like Sony might enable PS cloud streaming on this device in the future.
It probably just isn't internally ready to make it a full feature as of now.
Still.. i understand the thinking behind this device, it helps Sony be an option for people wanting portable gaming (they're not going to make a linux or windows device because that's basically incentivising ditching the core console) and they clearly wanted to spend very little on r&d for it.
However... this was still a missed opportunity.
they could have implemented a ps1, ps2, psp and possibly ps vita emulator as it wouldn't have cost them much but encourages consumers to buy more classics
Can’t imagine myself ever using this. Having said that, I’ll probably get one when it’s like $100 😂
You’ll be waiting a while for the price to drop that far
@@RoverHipHop97 idk, we’ll see. It’s hot rn cuz scalpers and Xmas season, but we actually imagine it flopping worse than PSVR2. Only a matter of time before it’s in me mitts, at my price.
Ordered one, can’t wait!
Great stuff
Hope we can get a hard case for it also
As a soon to be first time dad, I fully plan to buy one, but the lack of Bluetooth inclusion just feels like a middle finger to customers- especially since I already own the Pulse 3D headphones. Wired headphones it is then, until prices come down eventually.
BT interferes with WiFi.
Do They think about the PlayStation Portal Can Connect Anywhere outside with WiFi and upcoming PS Portal Case in the future
For me it's useful, I needed this since 5 years ago, I was remote play with my laptop.
Yea but for like $200? Look up the backbone, it might be more useful and is way easier to travel with tbh
Oh and it’s $99
@@PrinceZiim true, But I don't want to use my phone charge for playing and I would like to feel dual sense technology in the bed
@@PrinceZiim and for me it's $300 Canadian, and it's afordable.
@@rsoub4086 I mean if u can get some use out of it go ahead, I just think Sony was being lazy and could at least have made it run a few games of ps4. Quality, but hey each to their own, hope u enjoy it homie 👍🏾
@@PrinceZiimback bone sucks ass might as well spend an extra hundred
I feel like this was made for me. Just bought a brand new 65” 4k tv to really immerse myself into gaming but my kids had other ideas. Now my ps5 is collecting dust and I’m stuck watching Cocomelon 24/7.
Been remote playing ff14 on PSVita when I'm not able to play on TV... this... this is what I want.. 😌👍
Let's say someone is playing on ps5 on tv, can i use the playstation portal to use it to play something else?
No Bluetooth still blows my mind
Bluetooth can cause interference with WiFi and for a device like this where it’s well… all about WiFi, it makes sense. Stick your 3.5mm head jack in and 🤫
How does it connect to the accessories if it doesn't have Bluetooth? I'm trippin
@@balloonedraccoon2503 Some special plantation chip.
@@fenixa2z936 OH really? So my 3d pulse headset is garbage now?
Wait hold on what about if the handheld gets a stick drift 🤔
A vita 2 would have been better. Would have had basically same features but included Bluetooth and been portable friendly. Just IMO.
I think this device, limitations aside, will be a stepping stone to the future of gaming. Most handhelds barely run triple A games so streaming is a solution that won’t be pricey. Hopefully this product helps boost streaming into a space that makes it reliable.
There’s nothing stopping you from using the 3.5mm jack that’s on the Portal
@theolddarksoul1129 I swear people need to use IEM's they're so much better than over ear headphones and better sound then most Bluetooth headphones
@@TyTangowhat's iem?
This is perfect for me. I don't have to pull out a monitor to play while my son watches TV. I don't have a phone new enough to stream games to it and play with a controller so this is really my best option
Enjoy your massive input delay lol 😂
How much better is the streaming through the Remote Play on the device? I used it here & there with my phone but even being near the router (w/ good internet) i still get quality drops frequently...Is the Portal a much more optimized experience compared to remote play on other devices?
That's the same thing I've been wondering
It should be like playing on a ps5 since it’s specially made for it so the lag we’ve been experiencing using iPads, iPhones etc with the remote play app should be nonexistent on the PlayStation Portal which is why this is a no brainer for me and the fact that my daughter loves using my TV instead of hers makes this the best product ever for me lol so I can’t wait to pick mine up on Wednesday!
I’m assuming you can hotspot it off your iPhone?
I remember my daddy on the original PS portal back in the day nowadays I remember why I like that thing so much I’m only doing it because I just want to relive those days even though it doesn’t look like what the original one looks like I’m still getting one those were the days
It’s crazy how much explaining is needed. So many people are expecting it to be a miniature version of the ps5.
As in they expect it to have all of the games, the technology etc that the ps5 has so that they can use it anywhere, anytime like a Nintendo switch.
So many people are complaining about it. It’s just a remote control and another way to play that is convenient for most people.
It’s an accessory, not a mini console.
The ps5 is large for a reason. It’s needs the technology to do what it does. So how people expect something so small to run the same way as the ps5, same games, same quality
My only gripe is that they haven’t added Bluetooth so people buy their new headphones.
But that doesn’t bother me too much.
I’m looking forward to getting one so we don’t have to fight over the tv 😂
I agree but i don't see why Sony didn't at least implement a ps1, ps2 emulator for offline play. It wouldn't have cost sony much more
Could have been an easy way to incentivise consumers to buy classics and give sony a reason to invest in them more (equally helping ps premium classics)
@@DalazG yes I agree with that.
I have to say, I still play my vita, and have been since 2014... I used my old one until the screen pixels died 2 years ago, and I went and bought another one in Japan. For me, a handheld is being able to play it when traveling and offline, so this isn't necessary for me personally. If it allowed you to download games and play offline, I would have had no hesitation buying it
Same! Still playing my PSVs and also PSPs
Can I use for phone for a hotspot
What game is that in time lapse 3:22
It's crazy how some people complained that new devices took away the 3.5mm jack. Now we complain that there's no Bluetooth but don't care that it has a 3.5mm jack.
What game is at 3:20 ?
Wow does everything i could do on my phone 5 years ago with my xbox
If it connected to the cloud it would be an instant buy. I'm only half way sold atm
I’m looking forward to this thing! For sure!
I definitely preordered one
Ordered mines the 9th. Can’t wait till the 15th to receive it
I REALLY like the idea of this, and it fits my lifestyle perfectly. But my internet where i live is just so terrible that i cant see it working well.
😭damn
Will it work on my PlayStation 5 digital? Just making sure before I buy
Yes
I always mix this uo with backbone one. Both look similiar and i always thought sony release this a very long time ago already.
I hope mine ships and arrives on the 14th 😊
Man im tired to use my phone to remote play always remove the case and when you receive a call you need to reconnecte the ps5 . So this thing is for me 😊
Once the Sony pony’s had their fill, it’ll go on sale in a few months
I'll check FB marketplace in 6 months or it will likely go on sale next year around christmas so finding one for half off will be highly likely
It’s only 200 if you broke just say that 200 is a steal for an ACCESSORY
@@mikajweaver7222 200 still not worth it sorry
The lack of storage & the fact that wifi is always required is a deal breaker for me. No Bluetooth is also a big mistake. I would have prefer a standalone handheld console usable with my PS5 catalogue. I feel like it's just a tablet with a PS5 controller...
cant wait for mine soooo excited
Nice one. I hope you have a great time with it.
I'm going to wait for the OLED, Bluetooth, and hall joysticks model.
Got my pre-order in directly from playstation of America in California and I CANNOT WAIT till i get it this friday!! I'm like totally stoked about it!!!
Could someone be streaming an app like Netflix using ps5 while I could play games on the portal at the same time?
i don't think the ps5 can do anything, if you use the portal, it might just show a black screen or say that it's currently streaming to the portal, i highly doubt you can watch netflix, or play something else on ps5 while the portal is on.
So basically if you have a really up and down, shitty internet connection, this thing is useless. Glad to know 👍
I was pretty uninterested in this as I heard more and more from its initial announcement.
But I’ve had a bit of thought put into it recently as I keep the PS5 at my parents’ place while I am mostly away for school.
This video did answer a couple questions of mine such as if I could use it at the place I’m renting which does appear to work, but I would want to see more examples of it tested.
And a headphone jack is nice as I’m not interested in paying even more for another one.
But I’m still undecided for now as I do primarily play my Switch anyways and the price is a bit steep for me at the moment anyways.
cant stream on twitch and youtube?
Can you watch media?
Ive got wired headphones, this thing will be great for what Ill use it for!
7:52 what game is that? looks really cool
What is the difference between using this PlayStation portable and a PlayStation Vita to play streaming games?
This is gonna have a lot less lag/latency, it has adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, bigger better higher resolution screen.
@@NextGenNateI know what a stupid question why would you want to play PS5 games on a tiny ps vita screen
Bots are getting testy nowadays. Lol
A question is enough to made them shake at the slightest thing in life.
Can I use it anywhere without my ps5 being turned on?
I thought about getting this. But I changed my mind. Hopefully they will make one with an oled.
If this thing sellout you bet there gonna make an other one
They'll do it properly with the launch of ps5 pro.
Also when you turn of the Portal does that mean your PS5 shuts off?
I think the best feature on this device so far is being able to turn on your PS5 from anywhere.
What game @ 1:40
Can i play movies on the portal since the ps5 does play dvds?🤔🤔
I went into GameStop the other day to pick up MW3 and i asked them was the portal worth it and they told me I’m better off buying a backbone but i researched the backbone and it only has certain games that you can play on it…like you can’t play your own CODs on it, you can only play COD mobile…
This thing has way more Cons than Pros frfr
Turning it on from the device outside of your house makes it way better. Sony should’ve clarified that. That’s why everyone thought it was stupid lol being limited to remote play in your house
They answered that question long ago
I mean way back, people clowned it. Did they not? At first way back? @@theolddarksoul1129
I don't need it, but I want it
lol
If it dosent hold up, might return it and go with a Oled Deck
I wonder how playing online with buddies will work out, i play alot of warzone. Wonder if you can even play online like that.??
I played cod through remote play on my steam deck, would be a little harder especially if it has a little input lag depending on connection. I went 35-7 on remote play and came at the top of a ground war match so it’s definitely playable if you have good internet
i rock wired headphones when editing audio
I pre-ordered as soon as it was available. I'm really looking forward to using this device. I'm one of the few, maybe the only one, that will use a wired headset, so no bluetooth is ok for me. Plus, if I ever go wireless (unlikely) I would get the PS ear buds.
I, too will use my wired headset as I d9n't want to spend another $200 for the Pulse Explore after spending $200 for the PS Portal. I mean, I already have the Pulse 3D. Is there any way to connect that to the PS Portal?
I switched between wired and bluetooth.
My brother who hasn’t got a ps5 could play my ps5 from his place miles away while I’m not on it
i noticed you said “certain compatible games from PS4 will be able to play”
you think Modern warfare 2019 will be able to work on it? 😭
I preordered it 🎉
can u play ps4 games installed with external hdd
Is it connected to a ps5? If it is a ps5 , then it should play whatever you have on it.
thanks@@aaronwalsh8469
I like the idea, but the ball was dropped if it came with storage and it was intergrated better without the need of the ps5 if i could download games and take them on the go like the vita or psp i buy it
They should offer a premium version of this device. Like a portal elite, but then you'd be looking at steam deck pricing for sure.
You can remote switch on with remote play on android.
Im DEF pumped for it!
Wait, after talking about the 3.5 headphone jack, did he say it doesn't have Bluetooth? Cause it has to have Bluetooth.
Nope
Think I'll stick to my steam deck as my portable
I have one man the steam deck is amazing
I'm amazed by how many people still can't seem to grasp what this product does. The name kind of gives it away, doesn't it? It's a portal to access your PS5 from a remote location.
If I can play remotely while taken a shit at home I’m in.
$200.00 is a small ransom to pay for this luxury.
😂
As a new Playstation 5 owner I'm gonna buy this really cool looking Playstation Portable Hendheld no matter what people says but before i'll buy it I watch this video. These details are helpful, THANK YOU GAMINGBOLT! 😊❤

Can someone still play on the ps5 while someone uses the PlayStation portal ?
My backbone controller and Samsung Galaxy Fold work perfectly on WiFi and 5G. I won't be needing the PS portal

What games won’t work?
They couldn't do a psp or ps vita succesor. I miss the psp and ps vita even more now.... 😢 i'll wait for the new switch 👍
I switch a lot from home to my gf's place, so a device like this would come in handy, but she has a ps4 and I have a switch, steamdeck and vita what compensates for not having a ps5 around.
I have chiaki4deck installed on my steamdeck if I wish to remote play on my consoles, so this device has no reason to exist at all.
If they added 100-150 dollar price with the ability to stream games from the cloud and having the option to locally install games, then this would have been way more interesting then it is now
Its for me. If it plays smoothe, looks decent. Im not interested in on-the-go gaming. Price is good.
