Binge-watching your series of Hugo tutorials and finally I can make a sense of hugo site documentation and hugo product. Thanks a lot and God bless you.
5+ years later and this is still very helpful. I wish the Hugo documentation would update their Quick Start guide to include something like this for those of us who don't want to use a pre-built theme. It's good they link to this video, but it's hidden away in the Templates section. These items are essential since Hugo complains if it doesn't find them and you aren't using a theme.
If something is "very important", it might be wise to explain, why it is "very important". Otherwise a good initial overview of the possibilities for good website architecture (with hopefully low and local maintenance needs upon changes).
Pretty sure I copied the code exactly but my pages with baseof layout have "Top of baseof" at the bottom of the page in another font. Anyone else get this?
I guess that the makers of Hugo just decided on that. It also makes sense, because you might want to display all your articles on the front if you have a blog.
Can you create this tutorial without a theme? This theme is causing a lot of confusion. I am trying a make a website like w3schools but still not understading how to begin with.
If you have a home page (index.html in the layouts folder), it's not clear how also having a baseof.html in a _default folder affects that home page. I haven't gotten it to make any difference at all, even though my other pages are changed.
I'm finding these videos very useful, however they would be so much better if you were to slow down a little. Maybe it's just me, but thought I'd mention it anyway.
You know you're a good teacher when you have people binge watching your content 😄

The way you demonstrate base templates is very clear and simple. Thanks to you, I now understand where I should start. Subscribed!
The legend was born!
Very good stuff, Mike! And for those with React / Vue under their belt: If you know "components", you'll find "blocks" to be very familiar!

Thanks so much! I needed to see some examples and yours were very clear and precise.

Python guy here...so the baseof template for the other templates is basically like a decorator for functions?

What makes the home page be of type List page?

This is great. Use more blocks!
Reminds me of ASP.NET Master Pages.
Maan this is cool but at the same time the lookup order is so confusing.
