Tattoo: Art or Not? | Just One Question

We’re proud to release the first episode of “Just One Question.” This series celebrates art in all forms, connecting creatives in the tattoo community, artists, and art enthusiasts from New York and beyond.
It brings together a diverse range of artists, including painters, dancers, writers, musicians, and tattoo artists, for a novel exploration of art. The series spans Williamsburg, the West Village, Chelsea Street galleries, Broadway, Downtown Brooklyn, and Bushwick, offering viewers an immersive journey into the heart of New York’s artistic communities.
The premiere episode centers around the theme of self-identity in the artistic realm. In an engaging 25-minute segment, we explore the question, “Tattoo: Art or Not?” - featuring perspectives from a variety of distinct artists, both from within our studio and beyond. Each contributes their unique viewpoint to this thought-provoking debate.

Amazing series. I guess most of the tattoo artist has same questions in their mind. “Can we say art for this tattoo” or “ are tattoo artists are really artists”. I can say that there are tattoos being done 24/7 in the world, and even as I am making this comment, there are a lot of tattoos being done. Here comes the weird and funny part. There is a crazy big community as a tattoo artists and tattoo enthusiasts. But yet most of the non-tattoo artists don’t see tattoos as an art neither tattoo artists as an artist. I guess until some academic presentations or symposium or whatsoever came out, tattoos will be tattoos for most of the people. That’s a bit sad but it is what it is for now.

It hurts my heart to hear someone question whether tattoo artists are true artists. Yes many of them take something from a suggestion of their client and make something of it, but most make their own inspired, but unique art. Not all of their clients get that art, but many tattoo artists collect pieces from other tattoo artists because they are the ones who truly appreciate the unique art they make.
