TL:DR don't invest into income on worlds you aren't certain you can keep for at least 15 months after purchasing the buildings. Keep in mind the amount of time it will take for income upgrades to pay for themselves. If there is an upgrade for 4500 that only increases income by 75 or 150, it will take 60 and 30 months, respectively, to pay for those upgrades before you start to actually make money. If you are making these upgrades on Periphery Worlds, or worlds surrounded by other major factions, it may not be worth buying the building, because you will lose the system long before you get your investment back. This is the most common way I have seen people ruin their economy. For example, the Kessel system, and planet Celanon, have some of the best income generating you can make. However, in every campaign I have done, regardless of difficulty, I have lost the kessel system by month 10 to the Huts; and I have lost Celanon to the Rebels by month 12. Because of this, it's usually not a good idea to sink thousands upon thousands of credits into either of these, when you may only make back 1/2 or less of the investment before losing the systems. If you know you can hold these, than that's different, but just a rule of thumb to not overinvest because you see all those +300 income buildings. My suggestion, buy the 2800 tax building on both Kessel and Celanon, than use all your remaining money to consolidate your economy on the core worlds you won't lose, or invest in your navy, so you can start expanding into the pirate worlds, and old Repubilc/traitor worlds in the core. You won't have as high of a monthly income, but you also won't risk losing 30k+ investment and only making 10k or less back before losing these worlds.
If you want to take the risk I highly recommend rushing a Golan on Kessel, it is usually enough to save Kessel from the first few Hutt invasions. Then you can make some serious bank without much fear. I've never bothered trying to defend Celanon and its neighbour, I sell everything off those two planets because I know that those are going to fall almost immedietly.
@@thejackinati2759 The only reason I buy one of the 300 income buildings, is I can usually repel one attack from the rebels, and by the time they send the second I will have made my money back and can sell the building. As for Kessel, I built the Golan myself, but figure a lot of people tend not to bother to keep an eye out and didn't want to give advice to build it, then have people lose 40-50k when the system is attacked if they didn't build the Golan early enough. If you can get it up though, it really does pay for itself fast with getting all the income buildings, and upgrading them, you can get over 4k+ income on that system alone within 20 months. And once the Golan is up, I have never lost the system, usually trying to rush to it first than secure core worlds, than finally push out the Rebels and Huts from the center of the map. But ultimately, that's advice for far later into the game than this guide is really for.
@LunarRequiem my strategy for Kessel is to spam gunboats there, it works so fine that I beat the black sun while they attacked me with zann and 3 other heroes
will this remove garrisons effect as well? I turned affiliations off before I started this save, but garrisons are still killing me and possibly crashing my game. I just need to get rid of garrisons as well and this mod will be perfect. The economy isn't just punisihing, it slows down the game to a level that isn't fun for me.
@drlca6601 Ground garrisons? I'll be honest, I set all ground unit AI values to 1 so I ground battles are instant auto resolves. The ground battles are tedious and insanely system intensive. Even with the new 64bit update, my computer can't run ground battles consistently.
no just the garrison costs associated with units, specifically space units--just ran into GC fatal crash too lmao. If you know anything about garrison xmls let me know. Beyond the GC error, the economy just sucks so much ass. @@aceykerr8752

The empire definitely has a pretty rough start. Especially after playing the underworld the first time through. I saved it for last, but I got wayyyyyy farther in the campaign than my other runs. Are there any faction specific economics or are they basically the same?

I don't want to play economy simulator, I want to fight ships. Thankfully you can still download 3.5 and revert.
Thats because its not supposed to be 3.5, that mod was good for fleet spamming which is what the devs didnt want from the jump 4,0 is designed to be a true RTS experience and completely move away from the old ways of the game. You shouldn’t need to leave the game and find a tutorial in order to play it on normal difficulty. You should only need a tutorial to play the game better, not as a barrier for entry. The Econ is totally unbalanced and the “minor” factions start so much stronger than the player factions. Each faction should start on relatively equal footing and they should all be playable, with the option of a harder difficulty for masochists (such as yourself). I like games that actually have some semblance of fun and balance. So I guess I must just be bad at video games…
