Wow! The bartman face is wonderful! We have found so many bits of bartman jug, including a beard lol, but never the face. You are so lucky! Lots of fantastic finds there on the Thames - looks like you had a great time! Did not expect the mention at the end! This time it was US with tears in our eyes! You are all so cute! Take care, Gail & Alex x

A Bartman Jug is a very old German stoneware jug dating from 16th century. The little faces do not always break complete, so they are quite sought after as they are all different.Unfortunately this is the only complete one I have ever found, still always hope to find another :)

Must remember that Tatting or lace making, though primarily starting in the North as a cottage industry, spread to the South as well. With many men also tatting during the winter lay off. (Also, many sailors and soldiers did it to pass the time.) A lot of the beads you will find, may have been acting as weights at the bottom of the spindles to help them spin the cotton. They also stopped the many threads tangling as the people made the intricate patterns the lords and ladies wanted for collers, cuffs, hankies, underware, baby clothes, net curtains etc etc A lot of merchants would pay good money for excellent work, and often guarded their tatters, keeping them secret incase they were lured away by better payments for their wares. So, many of the glass beads could have been used as they were favoured for the weight each size of bead carried. It helped with tension too. My Great Gran was a Tatter, and was often hiring girls, teaching them to Tat.
Love the videos, and the crafting. Stay safe.

Hi ladies, it was lovely to hear Mum getting all excited over her find, it's remarkable how that face was complete when the rest of the jug was smashed. I think Mum needs a little fold-up stool so she can have a sit down to calm her nerves every now and then :)
Those metal needle things with a loop on may have been used to mend / make fishing nets?
That rainbow was actually an 'Ice-bow' which is formed as sunlight is refracted through millions of tiny ice particles in the upper atmosphere and can only be seen when conditions are just right making it a rare sight.

I love your posts and feel yours is one of the better to watch. I like that it flows more on real time rather than being so chopped up. I also look forward to seeing the kitty and hearing his purr. I also find many worked pieces of quartz ( there is a close mine) that were in the process of becoming arrows ..spear heads and other tools. Most likely Cherokee. The quartz piece you found looks like it could have been worked. It could of course be smooth from the giant tumbler called Thames..lol but it did have an arrowish shape and could use more investigation I think...why not right. keep em coming!

The gray pottery was German maybe salt glazed but I think that the bellarmine piece was too. The salt was added in at a specific stage of firing, according to the temp reached. Gave a distinct orange peal effect to the glaze. This made for stronger ceramic and was used for plumbing pipes.

Hello from a new subscriber, way out here in the Arizona desert in the U.S. **waves** That lovely chunk of glass is probably cullet-- colored glass used to be poured out in huge slabs to be broken up and sold to the people who'd work it into vessels and jewelry. For all I know, it's still done that way; but I do know that once 'cullet' just meant the pieces of the broken slab that would be melted down and used, and now it means waste or leftover glass, and often the pieces get put in aquariums. Who knows how old that is? Might be six months, might be from a Victorian glassworks or earlier. Pretty, though! (I worked in stained glass for 14 years; you pick bits of the history up.)

One day you'll find an whole bellarmine jug, they gained the nickname because of his large belly resembling the shape of the jug and he was partial to the gin they contained, they're not only made in Germany, Holland, the low countries etc, but also here, the London made ones are the rarest and fetch an high price, often sold as ones made abroad but if you know what to look for you can get a bargain.

Yes it was a good find, it's amazing what comes out of Victorian tips, but I have been, metal detecting and digging middens, castle dumps, manor house refuse pits for over 40 years, I've found onion bottles, whole pipkin slip wear bowels, a few years back a guy found 24 bellarmines in a field, it wasn't a random find he'd spent long hours doing research and dug at the site of a potters kiln and what he found were rejects, if I could give you a tip (pun intended) research, research, research, it's amazing what get's lost in council minuets, I can't say much about this but we found in Birmingham City council minuets from about 1850, workmen working in the 'Bull Ring' found a tunnel leading to the cellar of a local pub, they said it was full of old rubbish and ancient bottles, you'll find more reading than you will walking, but not as much fun :) good luck and I hope you find a lot of stuff.

Congratulations on finding the Bellarmine face.
Two good Medieval building's in that area of the Foreshore around the Battersea bend.
The Bishop of York had a Palace building where once Prices Candles used to have a factory on that site. Large Archaeological dig in the late 1990s just off the York Road. Hence why it's called the York Road.
So must have had a pier or jetty wharf on the Thames close to where the Heliport and Plantation Wharf now are. But the 1880 construction of the Embankment wall changed the shape here.
The second location is on the other side. In Chelsea.
Henry the 8th riverside Tudor pad and hunting lodge. Just off Chenyè walk. Prime location back then.
So plenty of imported high status Continential ware and pottery items.
Finally the Earl of Bolingbroke had is London drum or Manor house somewhere in Battersea. One place by the river bit with maybe another higher up away from any flooding of the Thames closer to Clapham Junction explains Bolingbroke Grove. Nice dry site where water can drain down from, and the trackways doesn't become a quagmire in the Winter, when on Horseback or in your private carriage.
Cheers from the Battersea Brick Hunter.

Until the Great Stink of the 1850s the River Thames was a lot wider than the River as we see it today.
Joseph Bazelgette built a modern looking river enclosed with new high embankment walls. And many new River crossings
Changing the height at waters edge. To get his new Bridges over the River. The old 1777 timber framed Battersea Bridge was replaced in around 1888. So clues can still be founded in the landscape maps to where the old roads were. Bridge Lane, mostly covered over by a modern housing estate, is a strong clue.
      But best still is
Westbridge Road. The Road that is to the West to the Bridge. Took my years to spot that one. And I live here
So construction of both bridges in North Battersea churned up lots of stuff. Including the famous Battersea Shield now on display at the British Museum. Worth seeing it.

Some kind of China clay ? Poured into a mould ,or made in two halves, that’s why the pipes sometimes have patterns along the seams.
Broseley (not sure of the spelling) ,Shropshire,England is /was where there’s a pipe museum. I think it’s an area where a lot of factories were making pipes.Worth a Google?
