Anyone who says anything negative about this beautiful young woman is simply jealous. She is an absolutely first rate concert pianist, who also can improvise with skill and originality. Tough luck folks, there are people of REAL genius around....get over it...she has it...

Gabriela is a true marvel. This performance is like a high wire act with no safety net. It's obvious that she doesn't know the song that the audience submits and she comes up with a fantastic improvisation in a short period of time. It reveals her courage but also her tremendous talent. The music pours from her spontaneously and it's of great quality. The audience in Koln is a sophisticated audience who are used to great performers playing at the highest level. The standing ovation at the end is testament to her endless ability to surprise, delight and inspire.

We need more artists like Gabriela Montero - pianists from the classical and romantic eras (Mozart, Liszt, Chopin, Skryabin) were known for their improvisations, but this practice has been unfortunately lost.

They are singing "Mer losse de Dom en Kölle" a carnival song from the Bläck Fööss ("barefoot"). They sing in "Kölsch", a local dialect of the Ripuarian language. Here in English (as far as possible ...):

perfect pitch is quite a common trait among musicians, and it varies to the extent to which they developed it. many musicians are capable of playing entire pieces just from hearing them once, or a small number of times. (even i am able to do so to degree)
as for being able to improvise - it's really just a matter of the "feel" you got to a certain tune.. she took a traditional german song and gave it a jazzy spin (which is by the way a very common "spin" among modern pianists)
Amazing improvisation. I've heard her playing in one ocation in my country. It's difficult to listen to the audience singing this german song (or get the correct notes) but She really can do it in exelent way. G. Montero is a great pianist.

I doubt very much that people even realise the intelligence this woman has to be able to perceive and then do/create what she does. Wow.
She made a ragtime out of this traditional cologne theme. Great fun!
@fwinterzlodig152 VIrtually all those who like to improvise would say the same ! As normal human beings, we should never compare our skills to those of "gods" like Gabriela. Just enjoy what you do as before, and enjoy Gabriela's incredible performance s as well...we don't play in the same courtyard, that's all, and we simply have to accept this. Be happy anyway !

It's a popular song in local Cologne dialect ("Kölsch"; linguists would say "Ripuarian"), typically sung in the Carnival season.

Tahuan, She has played -and bravely spoken. In MANY OTHER countries other than the U.S., including my country Mexico. Her humanist opinion (more than political) deserves as much respect as the one you have, the one maestro J.A. Abreu has staying in the system, or the one that Gustavo Dudamel who, by the way, WORKS in the U.S. as LAPO director and has conduct music even for the las Star Wars movie, being as he is a declared “chavista” (government collaborator). Sorry, but I don´t quite understand… maybe you can explain to me in which country political opinion and human wright are more respected?

Muy respetable es su posición humanista -que no política- , como lo son la tuya, la del reconocidísimo maestro José Antonio Abreu, que ha permanecido en el actual régimen o la de Gustavo Dudamel, -(que a propósito TRABAJA como director de la Orquesta Filarmónica de Los Ángeles ESTADOS UNIDOS y dirigió música de la última Star Wars, a pesar de ser “chavista”. Not to put it down, in anyway but it really depends , in western music improvisation is not standard, but in most world music improvisation is the norm, some examples, Hindustani classical, and Malian Djembe. A person versed only in western music would have a different perspective.
