Glorious glorious glorious, I was lucky enough to see the Divinyls 41 times in concert, I kept a record of everyone of they're concerts I went to. Elise was generally the stand out song at every gig, for me Sahara Rock was up there too as a show stopper. The anthem to my youth. Rest IN PEACE Chrissy
Unfortunately I only had the pleasure of seeing them once in concert. I can't get enough of her. No one in my 77 years sounds like her. Her stage presence was mesmerizing. It's almost as if she was on the spectrum...the way she moved around the stage. Yet, in interviews she was brilliant, fun, alive, measured. I wish I could have met her.
I heard this for the first time today. And the 10 th. I can't get enough of it. She channeled her music through every part of her body. Not concerned with being pretty, standing the right way... none of that self-centeredness. She had that quirkiness of Joe Cocker. It's the way those two just let it flow out of them like they were uncontrollably hemorrhaging emotion.. It's sexy as hell and I'm so jealous of anyone who feels that free. Too many singers are preoccupied with appearance. HOW did this planet no longer need her at 53? And for her to pretty much be dying from the age of 39. What an absolute waste, and if I'm EVER face to face with God, I'll be asking him WHY...how unbelievably cruel to strike down that amazing woman that gave us so much. Her ALL. I hope my comment drags you back to her after a two year absence. You'll just fall in love all over again. I need every CD for my car. My Bluetooth in my Kia doesn't. mesh with my android. I'm going to grab everything I can find of theirs on eBay.
The fidelity to the recording is just stupendous. No ad-libs, no excursions, no waste; just a pure, laboratory grade performance of the same song we grew to love, as is, from the album. Far fewer bands than you'd want to count did this (The Cars were another), and The Divinyls were possibly the best and most assiduous. And how all the more precious these documents are now, now that Chrissy is gone. "Life can be shortened, life can be very sad // But those left are grateful, for all that they got to have."
Sad but true. I know every generation thinks the music of their time was the best ever, but in the case of those of us who grew up in the 80's and 90's it was true!
I was lucky enough to see The Divinyls a few times when I lived in Sydney in the early 80’s, they always put on a fantastic show, Chrissy was taken from us way to early RIP
Believe it or not, Elsie was my downstairs neighbor in those flats in Darlinghurst that Chrissy and Mark once lived in when they wrote this song about her. Some previous tenants played this song to her after they Mark and Chrissy moved out. She was furious.
Memory will always remain of my 18th seeing Divinyls at coogee bay ,f'en awesome live band to watch and listen to and rock on with . RIP CHRISSIE ,hope your still rock in heaven !
I saw the Divinyls open for the Ramones at Pier 84 in 1981. I never forgot them especially this song cuz she rubbed the red lipstick all over her arms and was yelling at the audience. Great show!
Great performance of a great song! Christine is absolutely mesmerizing. What a presence! And, she's in tune, performing flawlessly while completely carried away by the music. So great!
One of the few singers who have passed away who I wish I was both able to see in concert live and just have them alive again. Dolores O'Riordan being the other.
At the beginning of this fascinating lyrical journey she is seen...with little fists clinched....warming up like a vaunted prizefighter entering the ring, ready to do some serious damage to an opponent. Chrissy promptly obliges by delivering the MOTHER of all haymakers!!!
The intensity and single-minded determination within those beautiful eyes says it all...(1:12) At the very least, Chrissy was the indisputable queen of alternative rock, a trailblazer and an inspiration to other young women that the limits are only those set by one's self....as long as you have the talent and the courage to chew off a really big piece....interesting and wonderful things can happen. This was a very important gig in the fact that it was an NBC network program (Rock n Roll Tonight) across the nation and into Canada...audience size could have been considerable. I remember watching a few times (unfortunately not this one) and I believe it was on just after midnight friday or maybe sat. The importance was clearly reflected in their flawless, inspired performance from beginning to end.
@ Joey Roller........Chrissy fibbed about her age, she would now have been 60, she was 58 when she passed, not 53. Those of us Aussies (old enough) know exactly how old this lady was. Not that it matters, I adore Divinyls (early work, not so much the later commercial stuff) and saw them live many times. Chrissy was totally unique in her music and so very brave in battling such a dreadful illness (well, 2 illnesses). It comforts me to know she had Charley to love her and take good care of her in her final years. We have lost an amazing artist and the finest front woman any band could ever hope for. RIP Chrissy.
+Linda Jones You are damn right that she was one of the finest front woman any band could hope for. I said several years ago on a post of one of the Boys in Town videos that Chrissy was right up there with Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar (early stuff) and Chrissie Hynde. Chrissy on stage presented the attitude of Slick, the sexuality and mysteriousness of Nicks and Hynde, and the sheer power of both Slick and Benatar. Not to mention the raw recklessness of Joplin. She deserves to be mentioned in that circle and in my opinion was one the top 5 female rockers of all time. She nor the band got the credit they deserved in the U.S.A. and this was a travesty. Rest in Peace Christina you were a true diamond in the rough.
I grew up listening to The Divinyls as an Aussie who appreciated Aussie bands from the 1970s and 1980s. It is shame that I never saw them live in concert. I recall when one song 'I touch myself." was banned in the US.
Do you happen to know where abouts? My great gran's name was Elsie and I remember her living alone in a flat in Sydney. Always seemed so alone, quiet and sad, lost her young husband in the war. I get goosebumps thinking that this song could be about her.
Apparently my granny Elsie never lived in Darlinghurst or anywhere that close to the city. And thinking about it, she would've had her two daughters and their children (my mum being the eldest) who would have visited. Case of mistaken identity, but the parallels are uncanny. I really feel for the Elsie in this song, thanks to Chrissy's amazing ability to bring this sad but true story to life. What an absolute gift 🙏
We talk about how great the ‘70’s and ‘80’s were, but there were a lot of people who fell through the cracks..Australia could certainly be a cold, hard country back then.
When I hear it, I know so many women from where I lived in my teens that it pertains too.... Separate to that I actually DID spend some time as a teen (ran away) living in Darlinghurst. Brilliant lyricist.
I love this song. I love this band. They have some great music. Now, let me say more broadly I love the category of Aussie Pub Rock. We here down under, have produced some of the best rock bands the world has ever seen. We are somewhat unique. We have a sound. It started with The Easybeats, then went to AC/DC, The Angels, Rose Tattoo, The Divinyls, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, Spy vs Spy, Baby Animals etc. Not all Aus music, some of it is crap (riding the coattails and legacy of the bands I listed). Bands don’t have Balls anymore.
How come I discovered Divinyls in 2023? Mind blowing addictive band, unique singer! What a great performer
Same here
I've heard "touch my self" but never realized how punk/rock their other music was until now.
I am having this moment right now. I always detected a little feeling of irony/humor to ‘I Touch Myself’ but I had no idea….
X2.
Aussie pub music from the 70's and 80's - very fertile ground.... The sound of my youth. God, Chrissy was just sex personified.
Glorious glorious glorious, I was lucky enough to see the Divinyls 41 times in concert, I kept a record of everyone of they're concerts I went to. 41 times! You lucky sod, bet you have some tales to tell.
@Warren552011 Yes dead set brilliant song live.
I would have been ecstatic to have seen just one show .. they were absolutely fabulous ..
Liam you are so lucky ffs 41 times! I saw them a handful of times. Coogee Bay Hotel Selinas was epic. Anthems indeed
Saw them once .. consider myself lucky
Unfortunately I only had the pleasure of seeing them once in concert. I can't get enough of her. No one in my 77 years sounds like her. Her stage presence was mesmerizing. One of the best Aussie songs in the 80s. RIP Chrissie. I really miss her.
Intense music. Harrowing lyrics. A performance that straddles both rock and roll and performance art. Masterpiece. RIP Chrissie.
What a peculiar performer she was! So wonderfully lost in the moment, and the voice of an angel. And a glorious chemistry with Mark!
She was the real deal!
My FAVOURITE DIVINYALS Song.
I ADORE the EmotionChrissie's Voice...
Such a great Lyricist and performer....
I feel this song so Hard

It's one of mine as well! Along with most of the others from this album!!!!
One of the greatest bands I ever saw live. Full stop. Including international acts with bells and whistles.
Brilliant. They don't write or perform music like this anymore. Glad I got to experience this band when I was young.
The fidelity to the recording is just stupendous. No ad-libs, no excursions, no waste; just a pure, laboratory grade performance of the same song we grew to love, as is, from the album. "Life can be shortened, life can be very sad // But those left are grateful, for all that they got to have."
When I listen to this I hear 'Life can be lonely, life can be very sad, life can be something you wish you never had.
What a great song. I saw them on their first US tour in Hollywood, CA and was completely blown away.
Thank God for these videos , because 40 years later the Millenials would never believe that such a band existed.
Australian millennials certainly
Know who she is. She’s an icon here.
@@jacqsprat4645 . I hope you are right. Because ZEE generation know nothing about famous Australian bands.
@@bobdooly3706 too true

Eso es entregarse completamente a su arte una verdadera Rockera tremenda vocalista con una super Banda
Believe it or not, Elsie was my downstairs neighbor in those flats in Darlinghurst that Chrissy and Mark once lived in when they wrote this song about her. Some previous tenants played this song to her after they Mark and Chrissy moved out. She was furious.
Wow! Was Elsie really in as bad of a state as described in the song?
Best Australian rock n roll band from oz . Nothing better.RIP Christie .
Memory will always remain of my 18th seeing Divinyls at coogee bay ,f'en awesome live band to watch and listen to and rock on with . RIP CHRISSIE ,hope your still rock in heaven !
This song gives me goosebumps!! So powerful and real, raw!! Hello from Florida! ❤
What a legend. This boys fantasy for many years growing up.love you and miss you Chrissie!!!
Saw them in '86 opening for The Cult. Simply stunning. They were everything I was hoping for, and more.
What a performer. What a band!
Man I wished I’d gotten to see this live, it’s like a f*ckin exorcism...Jesus.
As smoking hot as she was later, I love this Chrissy better. Wild and untamed.
I saw the Divinyls open for the Ramones at Pier 84 in 1981. I never forgot them especially this song cuz she rubbed the red lipstick all over her arms and was yelling at the audience. Great show!
How you sing live and sound awesome. Love you Chrissie.

I agree with you boy
I saw Chrissie and the Divinyls in the Eighites such a great band and a brilliant singer was Chrissie R.I.P. ❤️🌺🌸🦋🌈🙂

My favorite song by Chrissy and the Divinyls. One of the tightest bands of the early 80's. Chrissy could scare the crap out of people.

Linda Jones Well said
Charlie? as in the substance? not the person?
Julius G .......no, Charley Drayton - Chrissy’s husband.
Born in 59 died 2013, she was 53
Such raw emotion. This is amazing!
Superb track, thank you. RIP Chrissy.
All these young chicks singing in metal bands who think they are pioneers might want to take note. RIP Chrissy the one and only 🙏
I grew up listening to The Divinyls as an Aussie who appreciated Aussie bands from the 1970s and 1980s. It is shame that I never saw them live in concert. I recall when one song 'I touch myself." was banned in the US.
Saw them live in Seattle in about 82 and I remember her jumping around on stage with a double bit axe
This song was about an old lonely woman who lived in Chrissy's unit block. Drawn from life.
Do you happen to know where abouts? My great gran's name was Elsie and I remember her living alone in a flat in Sydney. Always seemed so alone, quiet and sad, lost her young husband in the war. I get goosebumps thinking that this song could be about her.

I love her. I love this band. I grew up listening to Desperate and What a Life...fucking spectacular albums!
Great Song, great Performance
Beauty in darkness as only Chrissy can be.
If you don't think this song ROCKS!!!.... I don't want to know you....
Anyone who's ever fallen face first should be able to relate to the lyric "The World's a hard place to land on".
This song is so deep and painful. I love it.
Reality for many of the little people out there who had bad luck in life and can't get a break, I relate 100%.
what an absolute QUEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Divinyls was always a tight band in each version, in each iteration; as tight a band can get. Open the door Wally, open the fucking door!
This was on live in LA. I remember just being blown away by Chrissy. Wish I had seen her live. Just incredible
Kick ass tune🤘 and live is amazing.

So good!
The stuff that Legends are made of.
That Chrissy was something else! Just awesome!:)
Genius !!!!!!!
It's incomprehensible that Chrissy can remain the sexiest female on earth with that dress but it is what it is.
haunting but good
What a performance!!
Simply Fkn Awesome talent.
Early Divinyls was a wonderful time, before they lost their edge. "you wish you never had".
real music !
Chrissie using some art therapist style techniques. from 1500 years ago

This track must have meant a lot to the band and whoever wrote the song. They really performed whenever they played it.
Elsie instructed me how to milk a cow years ago.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🤘
😍richard marx im here to take my queen🙏🙏
Yes i spelt it wrong it is The Divinyls sorry guys
How old was she in this video can anyone tell me?
@Warren552011 she was in Europe during the black September attacks which occurred in 71,72,73 so '59 would have been impossible.
@Warren552011 yes, it's in her book.
The growl
Dam, Elsie must have been a spectacle poor ol' thing lol
