  • ‘We need a world where people can talk about this and they don’t end up dead.’
‘Mouse’ is a self-confessed ‘virtuous paedophile’, meaning he has a sexual attraction to children, but has made the conscious decision not to act on those feelings and abuse a child. Here, he faces some very difficult questions from members of the public.
Ask the Mask is a series where masked characters are asked tough questions about their lives, their choices and the impact they’ve had on them.

There's barely such thing as a non-offender, I absolutely assure you that they own CP somewhere secret and are almost always caught with it. Viewing CP is offending (despite what this man says, he reworded a direct question, which leads me to believe he does have some form of CP) The other people on the panel are avatars for people who feel the same, people by nature are emotional, and their words reflect the exact thought of the many. You come off pretentious as fuck basically dismissing the input of "emotional" regular human beings, in favor of a clinical conversation.

I agree with you entirely and that is what I came to this comment section to mention. I wanted a genuine interview to find out purely factual information that wasn't skewed by emotion. This guy was clearly trying to defend himself against people who were actively judging him verbally and physically. If this was done in a legitimate setting with respect for the context of an informative interview then they would have conducted this, and should have, with a lot more professionalism. No. Let's get influencers to do the interview. I am not defending this guy at all, I am simply saying that it's a disgrace of an interview if they truly aimed for an unbiased piece of journalism.

My issue with this guy is that he admitted to intentionally putting himself in situations that have a high risk of him abusing a kid. Why are you volunteering at places with groups of kids?! He is intentionally tempting himself, and I don’t doubt he will “slip” at one point or another.

You have completely misheard what he said. He said pretty plainly that he knew he would not be a risk to the children when he volunteered. He did not in any capacity *intentionally put himself in situations that are high risk*. He does not feel as though he is a risk to children and yet still puts in precautions to avoid harm at all costs. Your belief that he will ''slip'' into harming children is unjust and frankly disgusting. It is very clear to me and to most that watched this interview that this is somebody struggling with a sexual perversion - a disorder of the mind. Something entirely uncontrollable and completely removed from any choice he could have made. Attraction is innate. Sexual perversions are medically recognized disorders. You're assuming the reason he volunteers at places with groups of kids is for sexual gratification. We don't know where he volunteers or his motivation. As far as we know it might be a group for teaching children to make and fly kites because making and flying kites helped alleviate his anxieties growing up. I think what "Mouse" tried to get across is that his paraphilia is not obsessively compulsive as nymphomania/satyriasis. For all intents and purposes he could be anyone you meet. Maybe that teacher who seems to be harsh and overly disciplinary towards the pupils might be a paedophile, living BDSM scenarios in their mind and not that other teacher who seems to be very attached to the pupils claiming that they "get the kids, how they think and feel".

True, but it *is* virtuous to refrain from acting out of desire when those acts would hurt people. Up and down the country there are people who attack others because they ‘didn’t like the look of them’ or some other selfish reason. A paedophile who has never attacked a child has caused less harm than someone who knocked the s**t out of some random person on the street. We should do as in Germany where the Dunkelfeld project allows treatment before they offend without reporting them to the authorities . I don’t believe they can help attraction to minors in the same way as I can’t stop being attached to adult women . We should offer help to them to prevent harm to children without fear of reporting while they have not offended . If they do offend they should be immediately reported to prevent further harm .

Instead of listening to what the guy is saying and thinking critically about how someone like this can be dealt with appropriately, they're instead waving pitchforks for everyone to see.

I also very much appreciate the willingness of the lesbian parent to be open to understanding that we absolutely need to be better educated about pedophilia, and that we need to educate our children on this as well. Ultimately, we need to educate everyone on issues of consent and what consent means. Anyone beneath the widely recognized age of adulthood, which is 18 years of age, cannot ever maturely consent to sexual relations, with anyone. If we are going to protect our children, we must start respecting them not as property, but as people. And, we must act accordingly. We need a dialogue with our children as much as with pedophiles.

For people struggling to understand, compare to OCD. These people have obsessive, intrusive thoughts which they can try and suppress. However, they just come back stronger and they perform the behaviours to get some relief. Alternatively, think of a time when you had an intrusive thought and you tried to stop thinking about it- often trying to stop thinking about it makes it harder for the thought to go away. Now imagine you’re this person who has this morally wrong attraction and can’t help it. It’s intrusive. Consciously, the most he can do is seek therapy and support (although there’s still so much stigma) and not act on these urges. But at the end of the day, it’s something you cannot control yourself. This individual is doing the right thing for shedding light on peodophillia and by them sharing can even result in some research to find out the underlying issue (if there is one).

I think it's awesome he's come out and talked about it. Children may have been saved from this. If he feels it's in his brain, and he can't control it the same as we can't control being attracted to our peers, I think him coming forward to talk about it is way better than stuffing it in until something horrible happens. I know how everyone feels... they HATE his guts and I understand I have 4 kids I totally understand the hate towards someone like him, but I always think of the other side I have a constant "issue" with seeing things from the other persons view right away, and i also was a drug addict and I felt like it was something I couldn't change in my brain and i knew everyone would shame me for it, but if I would've just came out and talked about my love for drugs maybe I wouldn't have done the things I've done. Idk, I'm not even sure what im saying but I know this is a VERY touchy subject but IF, and only IF, it's something they literally can't control, then I think we need to talk to them more and be accepting of them coming forward (if it's BEFORE they've done anything to anyone) bcuz if the whole world hated ME for being attracted to grown women, and everyone was gay and being gay was only accepted, I'd have to live my whole life sexually frustrated bcuz if I even looked at pictures of grown women I'd be imprisoned. That would be nuts. Like idk what I would even do... But on the other side, it has to do with children and we need to protect them at all costs. This is such a hard topic man I hope we come up with a way to protect these children even more, even if that means to help ppl like this.

Well guess what, we can’t just get rid of them, cause to start and end with we don’t know who they are. So maybe we should listen! I'm a MAP (hebephile specifically), and I'd like to share a few thoughts about this interview.
First and foremost, I want to commend this man for his bravery. Seriously, It's one thing to talk about this anonymously online, but to actually sit in front of three strangers to talk about this must be beyond scary. Every MAP I've ever spoken to has a crippling fear of one day being outed and having everyone they've ever known turn against them. It truly is a harrowing feeling.
Now, as for the interview itself, I must say, I'm a bit disappointed. There wasn't much of a dialogue here, not much of an effort to actually understand this person and where he's coming from. At times it felt more like an interrogation than an interview. I'm also not a fan of the editing style, and I wouldn't be surprised if there were more than a couple of dishonest cuts in here. That said, I have to keep in mind that this is a mainstream TV channel in the UK and this is pretty par for the course. I can at least appreciate they didn't completely demonize him and let him speak, though I felt a couple of them were a bit cruel with their commentary (more on that later).
Here are some thoughts I had on some while watching the video. I have a lot to say, so this is going to be a long comment, and will probably be split into two.
1:09 "I don't think you can really call anything a sexual orientation if it can never be consensual."
This is a rather odd way to look at sexual orientation. I don't think the subject's ability to consent is really relevant. People aren't gay because they managed to sleep someone of the same sex who consented. People are gay because they're attracted to the same sex. Even if the person has never had sex in their life, they would still be gay. By this logic, a straight man who gets rejected by a woman would mean he's no longer straight.
As for the question of whether pedophilia can be considered an orientation or not, there is actually some debate about that among professionals, due in part to "sexual orientation" being somewhat ill-defined (some say it can only apply to gender while others say it can encompass more than that). I think what Mouse was trying to say is that, for him, it doesn't really matter whether people want to see him as someone with a sexual orientation or with a mental disorder, as much of what he says applies either way. Having a sexual orientation wouldn't automatically give him license to disregard consent and having a mental disorder wouldn't mean he automatically deserves to be treated like a rapist.
1:16 "So I think you should have maybe therapy or something, someone to talk to to try and actually see if this is something that can be rewired in your brain."
This is something I often hear from people, the whole "you need to get help" thing. The issue here is that people often like to express this to MAPs without really understanding how this attraction works or even what "help" even means. Her comment about "rewiring" his brain is also quite telling. This isn't really something you can "fix," and in fact, encouraging that kind of mentality in a MAP can be quite harmful, as it can lead to a cycle of "trying to get it fixed" and repeatedly failing. MAPs who "get help" do so to help them better understand what this means, help them cope with feelings of isolation and depression, help them accept that part of themselves, and, in some cases, help them control urges if it's a problem for them (more on that later). Even that can be difficult as it is not easy finding a therapist who actually knows what to do in these situations.
Moreover, a lot of people seem to assume that if someone openly talks about this, it somehow means they haven't tried to get "help" already. Therapists aren't going to just tell you to never talk about it. Quite the opposite. A recurring theme among MAPs is a feeling of isolation and being unable to be open about a rather intimate part about yourself even with family and friends.
One more thing people need to understand about "getting help" is that this is not actually something applicable to all MAPs. I'm not at all against MAPs talking to a therapist if they can find a suitable one, but I get the impression people often think we're a constant, imminent danger if we're not constantly talking to one, which is not how it works for most MAPs. In the end, a therapist can help you better understand yourself and live with this knowledge, but they're not going to magically "fix" you. I'm very surprised the gay woman was the one to even bring that up. She of all people should know what it's like to be told you need to "get your brain fixed."
One thing I will say, however, is that there are MAPs out there who legitimately have a problem with intrusive urges, and those most certainly need professional help to get those urges under control. With that said, this is not the case for most MAPs.
1:30 "Have you ever wanted to [abuse a child]?"
This is such a malformed question. "Abuse" is quite a heavy-handed word to use here. MAPs are attracted to kids, meaning that, yes, they fantasize about having sex with them, but asking "have you ever wanted to abuse a child" implies that we not only have a desire to have sex with them, but also derive some kind of sadistic pleasure out out of it, as if what attracts us to kids is the prospect of hurting them. This is not at all how this attraction works for most MAPs. We don't derive pleasure from the idea of harming anyone, and the idea of a child getting raped is as disturbing to us as it is to most other people. In our fantasies, we're not imagining ourselves getting off to torturing kids. The kids in our minds are imaginary kids with the ability to consent and enjoy sexual encounters. That's why they're called fantasies. This is like asking a straight man, "do you fantasize about raping women?" I realize that the specific issue here is that kids "aren't adults" and that it would be considered abuse regardless, but I think it's important to understand that there's a big difference between being attracted to someone and actually being willing to hurt them for your own pleasure.
1:53 "But they're adults. You're attracted to children."
Congratulations, lady, you figured it out. In all seriousness, I find it rather silly how she asked him "what is it about kids that you find attractive," and when he responds, she says "but they're adults," like he didn't already know that, or like she was expecting some other kind of answer. What he's trying to say is that asking him what he finds attractive about children is like asking a gay man what he finds attractive about men. He's not really going to be able to give you an answer that will make you understand unless you're also attracted to that. People are simply attracted to what they're attracted to. No amount of "but they're children" is really going to change that. The sexual part of our brain doesn't care.
2:45 "That's a different situation, that's nothing like this situation."
While I can agree Mouse kind of did a bad job of illustrating his point here, I think people have to understand that most MAPs don't suddenly become wild animals upon seeing a child the same way a straight man doesn't upon seeing a woman. I think what Mouse was trying to say is that the man asking the question is assuming he'd want to harm his daughter, which goes back to what I said earlier about attraction vs. having a desire to hurt someone. The point Mouse was trying to convey is that this man wouldn't just a assume a random man wanted to rape his wife for no other reason than the man being straight. I understand people have a hard time differentiating between someone who's simply attracted to kids and someone who want to molest them, since the media often treat these terms interchangeably, but I assure you most of us are not interested in abusing your daughter that we don't even know.
2:54 "You don't think it's wrong even that you find a young child attractive?"
It doesn't really matter whether or not he personally finds it "wrong." He's still attracted to them, and he can either live his whole life thinking about how "wrong" he is for having those feelings or he can simply learn to accept and live with it. I would argue that it's not really fair to hold a person morally accountable for simply having an attraction, something they can't really control. I would also argue that the only thing that matters when it comes to "right" and "wrong" is our actions and how they affect others.
3:08 "So do you watch, like, TV programs and stuff, and look at a kid and be like 'I fancy him'?" "Yes, that does happen." "I find this is crazy." "That is mad! I can't understand you, I'm sorry! That is crazy to me!"
I find this so bewildering. They do this several times in the interview, too. He's been sitting there from the beginning telling you he's attracted to children, and then you're all completely shocked when you hear he found a child attractive. Is this really such a hard concept to understand? If someone is attracted to kids, then yes, that means that when they see a kid, they may find them hot. That's just how it works. I keep asking myself what kind of response were these people expecting. "Actually, no, I don't. I'm only attracted to adult children."
    1/2

    • @shocu7
      @shocu7 Год назад +5

6:54 "You wanted to be around kids. Is that so you can perv on them?" "No." "So when you worked[?] there, you didn't fancy any of them?" "Yes, I did, but that's not the same thing." "But how is it not the same thing?"
This goes back to what I was saying earlier about people seemingly thinking we turn into animals at the mere sight of children. I'm not saying it's necessarily a good idea to surround yourself with children all day as a pedophile, but believe it or not, we can see children as more than just sexual objects. Some of us become teachers or do volunteer work with children simply because we genuinely want to help kids. It's not all about sex for us. Moreover, you can put me in a room with a kid I find attractive, and while that may mean I would indeed find them attractive, it doesn't mean I'll suddenly drop my pants because I know better than that and I have no interest in giving that kid that kind of experience anyway. I would like to assume most people don't just think, "man, can't wait to take THAT to my room!" every single time they see someone they find attractive. Again, not saying it's necessarily a good idea to throw yourself in a pool full of children with swimsuits, but people need to understand that not everything we do is for the purpose of taking a kid to bed, and that we can think of children beyond just sexual ways.
I'm also genuinely concerned about how much trouble these people seem to have differentiating between "fancying" someone and "perving" them (whatever that means). It's like people today can't separate the concept of finding someone attractive from actually having sex with them, as if they think that when you find someone attractive, you *must* ask them to sleep with you at some point.
7:14 "Did you ever think what the parents would think about that?" and "I think that anybody that has children should have a right to have that disclosed."
What the parents think really doesn't matter, unless they're trying to say that none of this would be an issue if the parents approved, which somehow I don't think is what they meant. And no, I don't think parents should have the right to force me to disclose my personal fantasies, to parents or to anyone. I'm frankly shocked that this is coming from the gay person.
Something is either harmful to children or it is not, regardless of what the parents think. A lot of parents also think their kids shouldn't interact with gay people, trans people, people of a certain religion, people of a certain race, or even exposed to ideas like evolution, and yet we often stop caring about what they think in those situations. If the person has no intention of harming a child, and hasn't proven otherwise, then we shouldn't just assume the worst of people, and we certainly shouldn't require people to start disclosing their sexual preferences just for the privilege of interacting with children, as if merely talking to us is going to somehow "corrupt" them. And by the way, even if places did start requiring that, what exactly prevents someone from just lying? Asking people to disclose that information would literally achieve nothing.
7:58 "Why not [in reference to him not watching sexual content of children]?"
Did she seriously just asked that? Was she expecting him to say, "Oh yeah! All the time! You should try it!"
8:10 "You still fantasize about it, though?"
I get the impression people actually expect MAPs to just punch themselves in the face every time they so much as think of a child and think that's actually going to lead to some kind of positive result. Yes, we fantasize about it. What would you rather we do? Completely repress ourselves sexually? Like Mouse said, this is simply how our brains work. Sometimes we get sexual thoughts because we're humans and like most humans we sometimes get sexual thoughts about things we're attracted to. He could try loathing himself every time it happens, but that will accomplish nothing. He will still have those thoughts. And I would argue that giving yourself no sexual outlet at all is in the long run worse for you mentally.
9:14 "It seems like, to me, these child forums [referring to the online spaces Mouse uses to talk to other MAPs], you're just enabling one another, really."
This is also something I sometimes see online, this idea that we're somehow enabling "bad behavior" by just talking to each other, which to me is just kind of wild, as if people expected us to just lock ourselves in a room and isolate ourselves from anyone who's ever had similar experiences to us. Almost every MAP I've talked to has been helped tremendously by talking about their attraction with people who go through the exact same thing. It helps us remember that we're not alone, and that it is possible to be a good person even if you're a MAP. Us not talking to each other isn't going to make our attraction go away, and it's certainly not going to stop abusers from abusing kids because such people don't care about what you or I think and will look for ways to do it regardless.
And if I can be completely blunt for a moment here, you don't get to dictate whom I can or cannot associate with or what opinions I decide to express online. I've made a lot of close friends in the MAP community, friends with which I can be myself and not feel like I'm talking to an alien who doesn't understand anything I'm saying. If you think that all is still going to "enable" us or something, then well, I'm sorry, but I'm not going to lock myself in a closet to appease your sensibilities.
10:15 "It's not going to happen. People ain't going to work with you knowing that you fancy kids."
Here's the thing, no matter how much you think it's "not going to happen," the reality is that it's already happening. You probably walk by MAPs every single day of your life. Some or your colleagues, friends, and family are probably MAPs. The only difference it that they don't tell you (precisely because they fear this reaction from you), yet they're still there, "working with kids," as you say. All this attitude encourages is for us to do exactly what this man says "is not going to happen," but in secret. We'd just be sweeping the problem under the rug and pretend it's not there until it bursts. Like it or not, MAPs are part of society and always will be, and this is a problem society is going to have to confront one way or another eventually.
10:40 "...and to hopefully stop any kids from being abused in the future."
I see this come up a lot when non-MAPs discuss people with minor attraction, the need to "protect kids." I obviously have nothing against that, but I feel sometimes people forget this isn't *only* to protect kids, and that sometimes "protecting kids" was never really the problem to begin with. As I've mentioned several times in this comment, most MAPs are not at all interested in abusing children, and already understand very well why that's not a nice thing to do to a child. Many don't really pose that much of a risk, but that's not really the point. The point is that many people with this attraction-people whom you walk by every day and probably know a few-struggle with these feelings and the knowledge that society sees them as monsters even if they haven't done anything. Many are driven to suicide because of this, even when they never once thought about abusing a child. It's a problem that is affecting quite a few people in society who are often not even allowed to talk about it. I'm all for protecting kids from abusive adults, but I think people also have to try and look at the broader picture here and see that this issue is much more than just that one aspect.
You have to understand how it feels when you constantly hear people saying, "we need to get you help to make sure you don't hurt anyone." It gives the impression that you're nothing more than a ticking time bomb to everyone, that they don't actually care about how you feel and simply want to "protect the children," and that they will throw you to the wolves as soon as they get the impression that it's not achieving that goal, as if "helping" you was never really the goal. I've met MAPs who have tried seeking "help" and are constantly met with, "But have you thought about touching a child?" "Have you looked at a child today?" "Are you sure you're not thinking of abusing a child right now?" That doesn't really help us. That just reminds us of what people see us as. We want to have a frank discussion about how we feel, and how we can live our lives without our attractions defining us. Telling this man "and hopefully stop any kids from being abused in the future" is just telling him, "Well, I know you're going to abuse a child sooner or later, so let's see what we can do about it." That's not the right approach. You're basically treating him like a problematic dog that you're considering putting down, or at least that's how it comes off as. There needs to be a bit more compassion here.
10:43 "I feel like this whole situation for you is a little bit hopeless. [...] To me, I just think it's a bit of a lost cause."
This, of all the comments from these people, seemed the most cruel, and I honestly do not understand why you would ever want to tell this to someone with this attraction. This man is here trying to live a normal life despite of his attraction. He's trying to show an example to others like him that being attracted to kids doesn't have to mean abusing them. He's telling you to your face that he doesn't want to abuse children, and you're telling him that it's "hopeless" and a "lost cause"? What the heck are you saying? That he shouldn't even bother trying? Do you want him to just throw his arms up and say, "Welp, you're right, guess I'll go commit crimes now, since it's all a lost cause anyway." I can understand having reservations about him being around kids, but a "lost cause"? Really? People say they want to help us, but then they say shit like this.

@@ekZ11761 "having sex with children is by its nature hurting them."
The point I was making was that questions like "Have you ever wanted to abuse a child" are indicative of a perception of MAPs not only having a desire to have sex with children, but to do so in a sadistic way, as in the very idea of causing them harm is arousing to us. I know that sex with children is "harmful," but I hope you understand there's also a difference between a potentially harmful act (willful sex with a minor who may later regret it) vs. an unambiguous harmful act (violence or deliberate manipulation). I'm not trying to justify the former, but I am saying that I often get the sensation that people view us as sadists as well as MAPs, or that the suffering of a child is somehow arousing to us. Perhaps I may be reading too much into that "abuse a child" question, but it's still an impression I got from the interviewers beyond just that one question.
I'm not sure what you mean by "certainly not what ‘you’ as a group have your fantasies limited to." I'm guessing you're referring to rape fantasies or fantasies involving violence, which, yes, there are of course people with very extreme fantasies out there, but I don't think that's representative of the majority of MAPs, nor was it what I was referring to in my comment. There are MAPs with all sorts of specific fetishes out there, but I'm not going to treat those fetishes as the default when speaking about MAPs in general.
"If I had a paraphilia centred around murdering and cannibalising people..."
I understand what you're trying to say with this analogy, and to a degree it's true, although consider the mere attraction minors and the desire to murder/cannibalize/rape/harm to not be equivalents. An attraction simply means you find something hot, beyond that, your intentions will completely depend on your own beliefs, situations you're presented with, and other conditions you may have (such as the genuine desire to harm). It goes back to what I said about "attraction" vs. "urge."
As a side note, what is "accepting it as legitimate" to you, since you mentioned that? What exactly makes a sexual attraction "legitimate," and what does that entail? A lot of people talk about "accepting" or "normalizing" pedophilia, but I'm never entirely sure what people mean by that.
"To be a 'virtuous' (I hate the term - it’s hardly a 'virtue' to understand your own capacity for harm) paedophile is to agree that your desire is wrong in itself
I'm not a fan of the term either and don't personally adopt it myself, but to address your point here, I do not personally see it as very productive for MAPs to view themselves as "wrong" for having this attraction. It implies a person is doing something wrong merely for having their brains wired a certain way. I think having that mentality is just not a healthy way to deal with this. I'm not saying that means we shouldn't consider the risks or view ourselves as "virtuous" for nearly refusing to harm others, but I don't think we have to deprecate ourselves and adopt the notion that we're just ticking time bombs either to "prove that we're safe." A lot of MAPs suffer from poor mental health, and much of that stems from the fact that society leads us to believe we're doomed to be abusers. I think there is value in having positive examples that aren't just "I hate myself."

      @EricKeithSmith
I think I'm understanding the difference in our perspectives now, since you say it is impossible for a child to be "willing." Yes, they can be willing. Please note that I am very deliberately using the word "willing" here and not "consent." It's very much possible for someone to willingly do something without giving informed consent. A child can willingly take drugs without properly understanding the implications. I have met many people who willingly engaged in sexual interactions with adults when they were young who don't see it as a negative experience. That is, of course, not to say that what they engaged in was not highly risky and that they were in way over their heads. You can certainly argue that even if nothing "went wrong," they still may have not fully understood the possible consequences and therefore it should still be discouraged. It's a bit like a child taking their parent's car for a ride with no license. Even if they get back home without incident, it was still something that could have ended in disaster.
That said, I'm not a fan of telling people how to feel about their own experiences. If a 30-year-old tells me he had sex at 12 or something and enjoyed it, I don't feel it's my place to tell him he's wrong about his own feelings. I can tell him what he did wasn't right because it could have ended very badly, and that he may have not understood the implications, but I'm not going to tell him, "No, you didn't enjoy it, and you should be crying right now." That's for him to interpret. This is why I said "potentially," and why I'm trying to establish a difference between being forcefully raped and "willingly" engaged in something you "want" but is highly dangerous. I'm not trying to justify one or the other, but it's important to have nuance in this sort of topic and not adopt an absolutist mindset that treats those things as the same.
Things like "children cannot possibly enjoy sex" make it impossible to have an honest discussion about the matter. Unless you want to argue that minors engaging in any form of sexual activity whatsoever at any point before turning 18 (including watching porn, masturbating, or having sex with other minors) is invariably going to harm them no matter what, then you should understand what I mean by "willing" and "potentially," and how it's different from "definitely harmful" situations like violence and deliberate manipulation. Perhaps you won't agree with this perspective, but I have spoken with enough abuse victims and people who don't consider themselves "victims" to know that the subject is more complicated and nuanced than just "a child can't have 'willful' sex with an adult." I think if society wants to have an honest discussion about how to reduce abuse, these sorts of things have to be acknowledged and not just treat everything in absolutes.
As for the legitimacy thing, I guess it's just a difference in what I personally consider to be a "sexuality." I view sexuality as what one is attracted to and enjoys sexually. I don't really consider the morality of putting those sexual desires to action, as I see that as a separate issue. For example, I don't consider gay men gay because they have consensual sex with other men. I consider them gay because they're attracted to other men, even if they remain a virgin their entire lives or even if they engage in non-consensual sex. Sexual acts are sexual acts, and they can be either harmful or not harmful, but things like sexual feelings, sexuality, and sexual orientations are a different matter to what one actually does in their sex life. At least that's how I personally view it.
