- We always have an arrangement of things to do here on the ranch. First we’re sending a foal off and then we’ve got to take care of some calves we weaned. Later Jerry introduces you to some horses we have at the headquarters.

I'd love to have a horse right now. It would have to be a gift from God at the moment with all that's going on in my life. I need a Therapist on 4 hooves that I can ride. Love your horses. That Gruella filly is gorgeous and I love the Blue Valentine yearling and the sorrel!

Taking a three week assignment in Kingman out of Mina Nevada, contemplating bringing my two horses as one needs doxycycline two times daily for a tooth pulled.. looking for the near perfect " Ranch Fit".. I'll be available for interviewing if someone is looking for experience in "most" facets of ranching.. "I know everyone needs a good hand but for little money!"..

How do you make your money to keep your Ranch above water?
A CATTLE Rancher Depends on the sale of his Calfs and older cattle, to keep his herd going. How do you do your Ranch? A cattle Rancher may only get paid once a year. Is that true for the PDR?
We sell calves a few times a year. Some older cattle and the foals. We have a few pay days a year.

I’ve followed you guys for a long time and have always wanted to ask about your cattle herd. They seem to be a mixed breed herd and can you please explain more about your cattle? What breeds of cows do you have and what breeds of bulls do you like to use? Is there a specific cross you’re trying to achieve for heterosis?
Thanks in advance if you see my comment. I’m guessing we’re about the same age. I was raised on a cattle operation and farm in central Utah and I had every intention of making it my life. Then too many factors got in the way and I was never able to live my dream. I would have done exactly what you did. I wanted to raise both Quarter horses and Appaloosa horses along with registered breeding cattle.
I love how you handle your animals with gentleness, love, and respect. My grandfather was like you. He was gifted with horses especially.
I do love horses. I have spent a lot of years trying to have a great horse herd. It has been a life time. I am 61 in a few weeks. Life has flown by. I have enjoyed every moment.
The ranch had a purebred Beefmaster herd. It was sold off sometime in the 90s for stupid reasons. Since then we have had mixed cattle. I want gentle cattle that my grandkids can be around. I used to kids but they have grown. I want a cow that is fertile and is a good mother. She needs to raise a calf every year. There are other things, but that is what I focus on.

You surely have put together an amazing collection of mares and studs. I guess I’ll live out my dreams through your operation since kidney failure took me out of the game in my 20’s and other circumstances made it impossible for me to ranch, though I continued to try to buy ranches into my 30’s before I gave up trying and accepted that life had other plans for me.
I hope you’re able to live that lifestyle for as long as you desire. Most ranchers and farmers I’ve known can’t handle the hard work much past 70.

70 is a goal. I feel it daily. It’s been a rough life. But I have made some great memories.
How many acre do you need to raise a cow or bull; Is ot the same for horses 🐎?
It’s different everywhere. 12 cows per section here in northern Arizona. A section is 640 acres. Horses are considered a severe grazer so less of them. Sheep are 7 sheep to 1 cow.
